Re: [slim] Refresh iTunes library?

2011-12-01 Thread toby10

I can't comment on iPods and iTunes as I have successfully avoided
them...

but another possible avenue for car audio these days is USB. Does
your car's head unit support USB? Almost all the newer model head units
do. I've had a USB drive in my car for years, tucks right up under the
dash for easy access when I need to add music.

IOW: Maybe simplifying your car music vs complicating your
LMS/SqueezeBox usage may be another way to go, or at least something to
consider.

Re: [slim] Refresh iTunes library?

I think I fixed it thanks. Car is a Merc, USB is limited to 2k tracks
and clunky on how it manages directories etc. VW is easier - it
supports hard drives and good interface. On a Merc, either you limit
yourself to constantly managing what you want to listen to, or manage
an IPOD.

But, FWIW, I found a link to ITLU and this seems to do the trick. For
other users thinking of trying this, the instructions on the web look
limited so it's hard to understand what it is doing under the covers.
No worries - when you install it, you get a decent set of documentation
which explains all.

I've run this a couple of times now and it works a treat!

The double entries you have in iTunes is because of the fact that you
didn’t use iTunes to manage your music. The concept of iTunes is that
it is a music management system. So if you move around or rename files
outside of iTunes you are bound to run into troubles.

I used to use ITLU, which did work, but was slow.

Then I discovered a much better tool, which was quicker and has extra features
too. Try iTunes Folder Watch (http://albumbrowser.klarita.net/itfw.html).

It identifies dead tracks to be removed, and then shows new tracks to be added
to iTunes. It allows for multiple root folders, you can add exclusions, and it
can create a playlist within iTunes for the new songs that have been added.

You really don't have to use iTunes on most iPods ... Rockbox installs
easily and straighforwardly on iPods (although not all - yet!) ..the
two key attributes being: (a) your iPod is just treated as another USB
device, so you can use whichever music management system you like, just
copying files directly to the iPod as to any disk, and (b) all the
Itunes procilivity to mess with your music files or tags are avoided.

Simple really!

[slim] Refresh iTunes library?

2011-11-30 Thread yeomanspc

After years of resistance, my new car really only supports IPod as a
usable music storage device so I gave in and bought an iPod and
installed iTunes. Ugh! It kinda works - I imported my music directory
into iTunes library without actually having to import the music, and
then used iTunes to sync to the iPod. I would never use iTunes to
manage my real library, but have just re-organised a load of
directories and tags - generally moved stuff around and renamed a lot
of tracks as a result of cleaning tags. The problem now is that
although I can re-run add folder to library - all that does is add
new entries for the revised file names - there appears to be no way to
remove library entries for file names that no longer exist! I'm
looking for an iTunes equivalent of MIP's refresh tracks function.
There appear to be a few tools out there - what do people recommend for
this? My music is all backed up but I am concerned that if I (for
example) removed the library entries then iTunes will physically delete
music also. I have 30k tracks - doing this manually is not an option.
