Re: [slim] What backup software

2010-05-28 Thread bernt

I use Vortexbox. It has rsync configured by default. You can install
rsync server on Windows to.

In FreeNAS go to Services rsync Setup rsync client and set a
schedule. Done.

Here is how I did it.

Picked up a old HP dc7600 SFF from the basement at work. It has room
for two SATA disks and a DVD player.

Burn FreeNAS to CD, put a USB stick in the computer and boot from the
FreeNAS CD. Note the ip adress on the screen. If you don't have a
screen look in your router for the ip adress.

Surf to that ip from another computer. Log on with user admin, password
freenas.

Follow this guide to setup JBOD.
http://freenas.org/documentation:setup_and_user_guide:software_raid

Go to Services Rsync Rsync client.
Set the Vortexbox ip address.
User “root”.
Module “files”.

If you don’t use Vortexbox use your own settings.

Set a schedule. That’s it. No single command was typed.

My schedule.

Vortexbox shutsdown 01:00 if no player have been used after 23:00. It
boots up again at 06:00. Runs Clear and rescan at 06:30.

Freenas boots up every Sunday morning at 07:00 and runs the backup at
07:30 and shutsdown 6 hours later.

Re: [slim] What backup software

2010-05-28 Thread ltb76

I would recommend an online service.
Using USB disks or DVDs requires manual work, and to be entirely safe
with that solution, you should keep the backup set outside you own
house.
Online solutions like Mozy, Carbonite, CrashPlan and Keepit all have a
flatrate subscription. The software required is easy to setup, and it
almost work as Set it and forget it.
I currently use Mozy but is thinking of switching to CrashPlan as they
have a Linux client. But Mozy absolutly works and is not that
expensive.

Hi,

I run my primary music server on linux but I also have several WHS
servers that I use as a backup and use the windows command line tool
called robocopy to keep everything in sync. I have it scheduled in a
batch file and it works a treat! I also have a couple of multi-terabyte
drives hooked up to my desktop computer that I periodically turn on and
run my robocopy batch file to do yet another backup. Yes I'm paranoid!
I've spent literally years ripping and tagging my collection.

Actually it is worse than what iPhone states. He forgot to mention to
most likely cause of data loss, user error! If you delete a file in a
RAID 1 both copies are delete right away for you. Also if you have an
application such as a bulk tagger go through all of your music and
somehow corrupt it, RAID 1 again will not save your butt.

As already stated RAID != backup

Re: [slim] What backup software

2010-05-27 Thread pski

I'm a pre_gui kind'a guy.

I have only 300GB of lossless m4a's.

I use the /D parameter to copy only newer files (which is the default)

A couple of cheap USB drives reside-off-site.

The main library (music + else) is rsynch'ed between two NFS raids to
prevent multiple drive failures (and to speed primary recovery.)

I also take care of another 450 GB by maintaining a copy on the raids
and another off-site on an external USB.

p

The best advice: It took a long time to get this done. Don't feel bad
about using a belt, suspenders, and safety-pinning your top clothes to
your bottom clothes

I have used Mozy online backup for a couple of years now. I like the
way it works and it offers off site backup for $5 a month per pc,
unlimited.
The new version of their software even includes local backup as well.
If it works as well as Mozy its should be a very nice addition.

I also use Acronis and it's capable of doing file backups as well as
image backups, you just need to select the option to backup individual
files and folders. However, image backups can also be restored to new
disks in the event of a disk failure (something I've had to do in the
past as Acronis has saved my data from disaster a few times).

Re: [slim] What backup software

I use DeltaCopy (uses rsync) to backup files from my Windows box to my
Solaris box connected to my Unslung Linksys NSLU2 (Slug). I use rsync
+ ssh on the Solaris box to make off-site backups to a Slug at my
parent's house.

Think about this: what do you lose if a fire breaks out? In my case I
lose my CDs, my computers, the Slug holding my backups. In effect I
lose everything. Having an off-site backup keeps your data safe from a
local catastrophe. I also use this method for digital pictures etc.

Yes you have a second copy but only if one of the two drives die. If
both drives die because they are in the same box, you have nothing.
RAID is NOT backup, it is data access when only one drive fails.

RAID only covers the simplest data access failure of a single drive. If
the machine is struck by lightening, there is a fire, water damage,
natural disaster, or any other unforeseen issue that strikes both
drives or the whole machine; say bye-bye to ones data.

Minimum backup is a second complete copy that doesn't reside on the
same machine or stays powered up. Best is having a complete copy off
site. Parent's homes are good for this if they live close enough or use
a trusted friend. If anybody has several thousand CDs ripped, think
about how much time it would take to rip them again or if you lost both
the CDs and data to an act of nature.

I can't overemphasize how strongly I recommend doing true backups to
separate drives that do not stay attached to the server. And how having
an off site solution adds to the security of ones backup plan.

looking to backup my whole drive every week automaticaly to my nas
drive across my home network. Ideally it needs to be in a format where
if my drive failed completely i could restore to a differant drive. At
the moment i am using acronis and it backs up as an image. Is there
anything better please.

If you run a unix variant (linux) there are lots of choices. I run a
raid 1 system so I have two copies n two disks on my server.
Alternative is to rsync the primary to a secondary someplace else.

You can also program various solutions using tar as a backup system if
you are a unix hacker.
