Its rips to mkv, I've got a roku xs with the plex channel installed,
plugged into tv, also got plex app on phones/tablet for streaming there

I have been running vortexbox for a number of years and its great, not
just for auto ripping CD's but also DVD's which are both then
automatically updated on LMS and plex for Roku DVD streaming. The CD
tagging accuracy is very good, occsionally get a unknown artist but
rarely, every few months I'll manually update the tags with mp3tag to
make sure genre/year etc. is how I want it.

Having a young family this simplicity and time saving is a big plus for
me, my server runs quietly hidden away and vortexbox automates a lot of
this, occasionally need to reboot which I can easy do on my tablet via
the web interface

I'm not sure about options, but without changing anything it produces
.mkv files. And runs PLEX for streaming video to other things (boxee
box, roku, etc.). I ripped some DVDs but haven't actually set up a way
to stream to TV yet.

I use my Oppo to stream movies to my theater system. It's an excellent
multi disc player and the DLNA feature works perfectly with LMS.

Huh, interesting. From a quick googling, it looks like this will work
with the Logitech Revue too (google TV).

When it creates the MKV files, does it determine the main program? Does
it rip the entire disc to a single file? If a single file, is the DVD
menu supported?

I did look at the Vortex website and I couldn't really see answers to
these questions.

I should probably just download the image and try it out.

Thanks!!
Rich

Don't really know. I've ripped a few concert disks. And opened some to
see what happened by clicking on the (only) file with vlc on my laptop
to see that they play. So really don't know much yet. But I'm guessing
what I have is a single file with only main menu item.

While it rips DVDs and Blu-Ray discs to .mkv it will also mirror to mp4
and/or m2ts if you want. You need to get an MKV license though for
$50.00. A vortexbox can also output 3-5 independant streams or audio
outs, 3 analogue and 2 more by using USB DACs. It's great if you have
a centralized distributed audio system with a matrix audio switcher for
routing music to your zones.

My LMS server is an Asus EeePC 1005HA netbook with Atom N270 processor,

I rip CDs to FLAC (using dBpoweramp) or download files on a desktop Acer

or FolderMatch to copy things across to the Asus once a week or so. I
use iPad apps or the standard web interface to control the server as
 necessary.

The Asus server feeds a hard-wired SB2, wireless SB3, wireless Touch,
wireless Boom and a wireless Radio through three additional Buffalo
routers configured as bridges to give me a good signal wherever I want
music, usually synced to the same stream.

I listen to some internet radio streams but don't do Pandora, Spotify,
etc.; I don't have any hardware mods, LMS apps or plug-ins (apart from
the basics) and have not yet ventured into Triode territory.

Now I admit this is not an elegant one-box solution like VortexBox
since it uses things I already had, but it works (mostly!) and I
 understand it.

So what am I missing that VortexBox could give me? Please note this is
NOT a VortexBox criticism; if I didn't already have some old hardware
lying around I may well have gone down that route. Should I look at the
 software?

It sounds like you're pretty happy with your setup and have things
configured the way you want. As such, VortexBox sounds like a solution
in need of a problem ... a problem you don't have.

And if you're not familiar/comfortable with linux command line, you'd
probably experience a good amount of frustration as you deal with that
learning curve.

Unless something is broken about your current setup, I'd leave well
enough alone.
