Re: [slim] Why so much negativity. I LIKE the squeezebox products I have

2010-01-18 Thread Mick Seymour

Yes, good post.

I have an SB3 and a Boom, running SqueezeCenter on a RedHat server and
I'm very happy with it. I haven't moved to 7.4 because 7.3.3 is stable
and I don't need the later release.

I've also just finished converting my music (CD, MD and cassette) to
FLAC after 18 months of SB ownership so I'm sitting back listening to
the music and thoroughly enjoying it.

You're always going to see negative comments, that will never change.
Even when a product is the best of its class, or like the Squeezebox
line, simply the best. There are still problems with the software,
different people have different issues for different reasons. You're
always going to see it.

But there's nothing else out there that compares. No Sonos, no
Sooloos, not anything. It doesn't matter how much you're willing to
spend, you're not going to find better or more useful audio playing
software than Squeezebox Server, all things considered.

I agree entirely, because its free however, it doesn't really get the
resources it needs these days to keep up with all the other product
changes. Squeezebox Server really does need to be a product.

++1, I simply *love* these products (Duet and Boom(s) at my house).

Despite the odd timeout fetching an internet stream, I've never
regretted buying any of them. It just gets better and better for me, and
I added a 2nd BOOM last month. All are connected over wireless.

[slim] Why so much negativity. I LIKE the squeezebox products I have

2010-01-17 Thread jimbo45

Hi all

Why is there so much negativity on these products -- from what I can
see 99% of problems are related to incorrect network setup or Broadband
bandwidth issues.

OK some of these Network problems can be confusing to Non computer
techies -- especially if there is an unseen IP address conflict - but
usually the devices connect fine FIRST TIME.

With any relatively new technology there will be teething problems
--and I will agree that the setup and operation needs to be made more
Idiotproof - but it will come I'm sure.

A lot of people have problems starting a new computer that they've just
bought from a store so I'm sure some problems will always occur with any
technical product.

Yes the main Server has been down from time to time --but not very
often -- the dropouts are often from the Radio website itself -- such
as BBC R5 and the SKY NEWS Isleworth recently - but that was due to
these sites being massively overloaded due to the events in Haiti
recently.

Anyway here's one user in spite of initial teething troubles who is
VERY HAPPY with the system and am going to get the Touch when it is
available in the UK.

I already have a Squeezebox DUET and a RADIO (which I use daily).

Cheers
jimbo

Good post.

Despite a few niggles I am very happy with my 2*SB3's, Squeezebox Radio
and old SB1.

I'm very impressed with the radio, it looks great and works well.

Personally I think the niggles are worth it for the flexibility you get
with the Squeezebox Server approach. Although it just works I get
frustrated with the limitations of iTunes etc...

+1, my SB3, 2*Boom, TP and Controller are great.

In contrast, it's taken me 4 MONTHS to get a workable set-up to hook up
my DLNA-enabled Sony TV to a DLNA media streamer on Vista!

I totally agree and very well said. I love the Squeezeboxes and I have
never listened to so much awesome music with such great fidelity. I,too,
think that there is a lot of negativity, but it does seem to be
decreasing. I cannot wait for the touch which is in process.

Re: [slim] Why so much negativity. I LIKE the squeezebox products I have

2010-01-17 Thread sander

I think 90%+ of the people who post here like, or even love, their
Squeezebox products. I own a bunch and overall they're easily one of the
best purchases I ever made. I hope to the Squeezebox system for the rest
of my life and losing it would be a great blow.

The negativity has to do with with a number of issues:
The seemingly never-ending parade of changes to the server which add no
real new functionality, but just make it more difficult to keep up. This
latest app boondongle is a classic example.
While the new devices are exciting and have greatly expanded the
functionality of the Squeezebox system, there have been a number of
gaffes (unreliable alarms, poor wifi, etc) which have detracted from the
excitement.
Squeezeplay is still half finished mess which more than two years after
its release has poor 3rd party support and lacks the functionality of
it's primitive predecessor.
Lastly there are indications that Logitech is cooling on Squeezebox.
They've embarked on an aggressive agenda, but they're not putting enough
resources behind it to implement it correctly. In a worst case scenario
they could leave the project in a very incomplete state if they cut back
now.

All this said the glass is at the half full/empty, and the fact that
people are complaining means they haven't given up, which is good. The
Touch is the first truly new class of device since the SB2 IMHO, if they
do a good job it could really revitalize everything.

Hi,

I suspect it is because most folks here are here for help, as opposed
to all working fine... I know I joined because I thought I would need
help, but nope... All went well first time, and all is running like a
top here in Oregon. Nice system, well thought out, and virtually no
issues of any kind... The only real issue I had was my fault...

Anyway, that's my .02 cents worth...

Happy as hell with my Squeeze Radio!

2010-01-17 Thread Gerry123

Other than the SBC that I sold on ebay, the other four players (2 X SB3,
SBR and boom) have been ultra reliable from day one and are used on a
daily basis. All ethernet here, none of that new fangled wireless thingy
for me.

Seriously, it's ethernet because I can but I'm sure if I had to use
wireless all would be fine too.

I love my squeezeboxes and I'm looking forward to many years of using
them.

Gerry.
