I find it so hard to understand why the developers at SlimDevices went
for a playlist file format that differs from the WMP standard. Why? Can
anyone explain the logic behind such a decision?

Simple - the wpl playlists are in no way a standard. The two commonly
used standards for playlist files are pls and m3u. Better ask Microsoft
why they didn't use either of those...

SC supports a wide range of playlist formats, including .wpl. As
others have said, .wpl is far from standard - .pls and .m3u are much
more common. .wpl is also proprietory to Windows. Not sure if you are
aware from your other posts, but SC is cross platform and works on Mac
and Linux too. There are increasing numbers of people out there who
don't use Windows.

So if .wpl was the only playlist format supported, people with
Macs/Linux OS wouldn't be able to use SC, people who have .mp4 files
couldn't use SC and if SC created its playlists in .wpl format they
would probably have to pay some kind of licence fee to Microsoft,
because it's a proprietory format. Personally, I think it's very
helpful that the designers have gone for the approach of supporting a
wide range of formats.

Asfar as I can see, SC can read m3u list created by VMP, but not vice
verca. What does this mean? Isn't m3u=m3u ?

They are not supposed to work as far as I know. The workaround is to
use a different directory. But it is kind of manual as I have to move
the playlist after I created it etc.

Just thought the playlist should not really be loaded into the library
if the Squeezecenter can't process it.

What is the extension of the WMP playlists? Assuming it's something
proprietary (do I remember .wpl correctly?) - just add this extension
to Settings/Advanced/File Types/Disable playlist extensions. If you do
a rescan playlists (may need a full clear and rescan to get rid of the
ones that are there) these should be ignored in future.

the autoplaylists and regular playlists have the same extension. so
excluding that extension would exclude the regular playlists.

Re: [slim] Windows Media Player Auto Playlists

2008-08-11 Thread Siduhe

Ah, good point. Didn't realise you were also using WMP for regular
playlists as well as the autoplaylists. One option would be to
instruct WMP to create its regular playlists in a different format as
described 'here'
under create a regular playlist, but leave the auto playlists in .wpl.
You could then exclude the wpl format as suggested above.

However, you may find it easier to use another folder as suggested by
others!

[slim] Windows Media Player Auto Playlists

2008-08-10 Thread lrossouw

Hi

I use WMP and I use auto-playlists on it.

Squeezebox can't interpret these but it is quite frustrating that they
still appear on the playlists in the library. Can't we make it
automatically ignore auto playlists it can't play?

First prize is obviously to make it use these thoug :)

Cheers
Louis
