Re: [slim] iPeng vs. SqueezePad

2011-04-20 Thread sferrari63

I've used iPeng on my iPhone for a long time and was generally pretty
happy with it. My biggest issue is that I find the interface for
adding songs to a playlist a bit confusing (single song vs. whole
album, replace playlist vs. insert next vs. add to end), but I think
that's largely my problem, and would probably go away if I paid more
attention.

I've been using the iPhone version on the iPad recently as well and it
works fine, but I thought I might get a better experience with
something designed specifically for the iPad. After reading here and
in other places on the web I decided to go for the SqueezePad. It
seems to work fine, but I find the interface a bit frustrating for two
reasons. First, the sliding transitions feel slow; I prefer the quick
response of iPeng. Second, I use search a lot, and I like the way
iPeng gives the results for artists, albums, and songs immediately, vs.
SqueezePad which makes you choose which category you want to search.

Not showstoppers, I might find I prefer other aspects of SqueezePad,
and it's only $10, but I figured I'd pass along these points in case
they're important to other shoppers or the developer.

Yes, as long as you use the same iTunes account.
You can install your bought apps on up to 5 (?) devices.

No trial periods, discounts or anything on App Store. It's got a simple
business model: free or full price.
Updates, for example, are free.

I always thought so but I recently added a 6th one and I could still
put all my Apps onto it so it's probably either no limit at all or a

And then you plan to spend another 500$ on another iPad next April.

Not really... but hey... did you not hear... times are tough moneys
tight...etc...

As for the 2nd iPad, my 15yo daughter has started asking for an iPad so
it would really be purchasing her a used gift Of course I will have
to sell my Swan Diva 5.1 tower speakers to pay for the new iPad
anyone looking for a pair of nice speakers? ;-)

I did purchase both apps and I am messing around with them both at this
very moment.

I will report back my finding for others out there in the same position
that I was in being torn between these two apps.

Also I I found this older thread that talks about Squeezecast for the
iphone/ipod

and it said it could be a good way to use the iPad as a SBplayer using

multi-tasking is here... has anyone tested it out or am I going to have
to shell out an additional $6 to be the guinea pig? I am going to have
to sell some of my other electronics laying around to pay for all these
apps! Anyone looking for a Sirius Stiletto cheap?? ;-)

Pandora menus are driven by the server, so both Apps will integrate

How long have you used iPeng?
iPeng will slow down the server a bit until you have loaded the artwork
the first time because it doesn't use the same tiny thumbnails
SqueezePlay uses.
That will go away after each thumbnail has been resized and only has to
be redone whenever you do a full clearrescan of your library on the
server side.

Another difference is album loading: iPeng loads the artist name along
with the album which is slow in server versions up to 7.5.x.

For both issues using SBS 7.6 helps a lot.

Last but not least there's loading of the current playlist. With a
truely large current playlist this can put a _lot_ of load on the
server. I don't know exactly why that is, but SBS seems to be
particularly slow in processing this and iPeng always loads the whole
list in the background.

Apart from that there is a number of cases in which iPeng is actually
faster than SqueezePlay. Especially loading longer tables iPeng will
show content much sooner because it doesn't wait for the whole list to
be available.

I agree I'm not particularly happy but too many people didn't like the
swiping.
BTW, the button is by no means tiny, it's the whole area right of that
drop down arrow, at least 400x60 pixel, I believe. I usually tap on

I believe you'd need to install an external server (7.6), e.g. on a PC,
and connect the touch to it. It will then ask to update to the latest
7.6 FW and there you go.
You should not connect it to MySB afterwards (or it will ask to install
7.5.1 again) but you can connect it back to itself.

SqueezePad indeed - currently - needs you to configure your
server-address manually once. But that's not too complicated, one has
just to lookup the values from the Squeezebox. There is also a short
tutorial about that on my website FAQ (http://www.squeezepad.com/faq/)

Anyway - we currently just need to wait for Apples review, than
SqueezePad will find the server automatically too.

Anything you can reproduce (crashes)? There are two I know about and I
do already have fixes for: one at startup and one where iPeng will
crash when you hold an item in the playlist screen saver (you select

Anything you can reproduce (crashes)? There are two I know about and I
do already have fixes for: one at startup and one where iPeng will
crash when you hold an item in the playlist screen saver (you select
an item in that list by double-clicking to avoid accidental
 invocation).

1. At first startup
2. When doing a radio channel search
3. When switching to mysqueezebox service

No, I havent been able to reproduce it.
Each incident just happened once until now.

Apart from that your app is hammergeil. :-)

Re: [slim] iPeng vs. SqueezePad

2010-11-07 Thread pippin

I just checked my crash reports on iTunes Connect and there was only a
single one - for the startup issue I already fixed by now.
Please allow crash reports to be collected and sent to Apple to help
debugging software.
(I believe your crashes would not yet show up, I think there's a delay
of at least a day after syncing the reports anyway).

I've got both, and each has its advantages. Of the two I think
Squeezebox is the more attractive app (caveat: I am using them on the
iPad, but I do NOT have dedicated iPad version of iPeng).

My issue with Squeezebox is that it only seems to function in landscape
mode.

really two quite different user interfaces, have a look at the screen

After my last post I felt guilty so I went ahead and got Ipeng HD. I
take it all back. On the cosmetic side iPeng is just as attractive, and
I like the option of using it in portrait mode. I'll use both for a
couple of weeks and then decide if there is a reason to keep them both
on the iPad.

[slim] iPeng vs. SqueezePad

2010-11-06 Thread moof

Hi,

would someone please be so kind to post a screenshot of the browsing
the music folder structure screen for the two apps?

If possible please also post a screenshot of a album without a cover
art.

I am not sure which app to buy. My collection has some missing tags and
covers. Therefore I am interested how this would look like in both
apps.

Many thanks
moof

In iPeng there's a difference between a folder that only contains tracks
and no subfolders which is then handled like an album or a higher-level
folder with subfolders.
The screen shots are portrait but this works similarly in landscape
just with a wider right hand window.

Is the folder Musikordner in the top level navigation?

Yes it is.

And the top level menu (Artists, Albums, ..., Music Folders,...) is
always visible on the left.
Ok, except in Screensaver mode... :-)

Yes, Musikordner which is Mysic Folder is in the top level. What you
see on the left hand side is always the top-level menu, the navigation
through lower-level menus is on the right hand side.
iPeng keeps the menu tree for all top-level menus so if you go to e.g.
My Apps and then come back to Music Folder you'll be on the same
level in the music folder hierarchy as before.

Beeing able to have both top-level and sub-level menues open at the

If you can't decide, just buy both of them. :-)
Both are very good, so it's just a matter of taste which one you
prefer...

I agree :-D

As to navigation: yes the left hand pane has all the menus you know
from the Squeezebox. The video by the way doesn't show the playlist,
which slides in from the right (you can see that on a screenshot on my
website)
A future version will have a button to dismiss the pane with the main
menu, the cover area will then move to the left.

Then you can choose to see either:
- main menu and cover
- cover and playlist
- main menu and playlist (and not much of the cover)
and of course switch between all these modes quite fast.

1st + 3rd option is available already today. 2nd as described, when the
main menu can be dismissed in a future version.
