I completely agree about LMS. It's already extremely versatile, and its
capabilities continue to grow. Hopefully it has enough critical mass to
continue for a long time to come.

I wonder if Logitech simply saw the writing on the wall regarding the
development of software players, and realised that it would be hard to
make money from Squeezebox hardware when in competition with, say, a
Raspberry Pi feeding a DAC. 'SqueezeESP/SqueezeAMP'
is yet further proof. I do admit that it would be nice to be able to
buy 'official' Squeezebox hardware still, say a 'Boom 2' for instance.

[slim] praise

2019-08-18 Thread freelsjd

I just want to state in this forum, that the logitech media server
(formally slimserver), and the squeezebox player, continues to be the
best music player and music file organizer available. Even after all
these years, and new products from many companies and developers, it is
the best. Plex is certainly good and includes many other formats of
media besides music, but for simply music, LMS is the best. It is fast,
versatile, etc. I continue to not understand why Logitech could not
embrace this technology/product, even now. The only blunder I have seen
worse is why Sears would fail in the internet world with a catalog as
large as they had. Enough of my rant. Good day.

Well, what can I say. I just received a Duet and the Squeezebox
experience is better than ever. Thanks to all that made it possible.

I certainly have to install proper artwork now.

[slim] Praise for SB3

2007-07-08 Thread gutted

Only very recently, I'd been using SB1. I loved it, of course, but my
wife was never all that enamoured because it was prine to drop-outs -
particularly when playing FLAC format. When playing MP3s, the higher
the bitrate the higher the frequency of drop-outs. My server isn't all
that powerful, but it *should* be powerful enough to cope with it (I'm
using a 1.4GHz CPU, with 512MB RAM, using ethernet connection - old
certainly, but should be enough to run SS).

Anyway - I recently bought an SB3 and I've got to say that it's an
amazing improvement over the SB1. I've not yet noticed any drop-outs
-at all- in many hours of playback. Where previously all I'd need to
do would be to make a couple of changes to the playlist through the web
interface to cause a drop-out, I've not encountered any of that yet.

As per a previous post a couple of weeks back, I'm still a bit put-off
by the Logitech logo (especially since I -love- the analogue VU meters
so a constanly looking at the SB) but the performance and reliability
is such an improvement that I'm learning to deal with my brand snobbery
;) :)

If anyone has an SB1 and gets an occassional drop-out that they find
irritating or off-putting, trust me: upgrade your SB - the difference
is quite astounding! Even my wife is back on board again now :)

I also had dropout problems with an SB1 and FLAC, but it turns out that
most of it is due to the fact that it doesn't natively decode FLAC, so
you get the full 1.4mbps WAV stream. The SB1 only supports 802.11b so
it's far more likely to run out of bandwidth if the base RF rate drops
to the fall-back 1mbps.

Upgrading to the SB3 fixed all of the drop-out problems, the 802.11g
card works much better.

Server side I only have a P2-350 running Linux. You don't need much to
run a slimserver.

Re: [slim] Praise for SB3

2007-07-08 Thread gutted

That's what I initially thought, though it happened even when connected
to the ethernet. I assumed t was something to do with bandwidth, so
installed GigEthernet hubs, cards and cables so that bandwithd would
only be limited by the 100mbps port at the SB1. When increasing the
badnwidth didn't help, I just assumed it was something to do with the
decode on the server side (but never managed to match the drop-outs
with any CPU spikes on the machine running SS). Before I switched to
SB3, the last theory was that it was something do with buffer
under-run, since the drop-outs seemed to be getting almost regular.

But yeah, with native FLAC decode as one of the key reasons for
upgrade, I installed it and it's been working like a charm for a good
couple of weeks now - including a good 3 or 4 days of almost continuous
playback :) :)

[slim] Praise for 'Random Play' Plug-in

2005-08-17 Thread BBobley

I'm posting this in praise of the Random Play plug-in (thanks kdf!). I
figured that beginners might not know about it so that's why I'm
posting in the General section. This plug-in *really* should be made
part of the standard installation.

Here's a story that reflects why I feel this way: I've owned an ipod
for about three years. Previously, setting up the ipod to listen to
random songs was a bit of a pain. First you had to go into the
Settings and change to the shuffle songs mode, then you had to go to
and play All songs and it would then shuffle your entire set of songs
(much like the way Squeezebox does it). But it was a pain. And
non-technical folks (like my wife) could never get it right. She would
get confused on what setting to change or after she was done, she'd
accidentally leave it on Shuffle, so then everything played randomly.

Then Apple did something very smart: a few months back, they added a
new top-level command called Shuffle Songs. You just click one
button and it starts spitting out songs randomly. And it doesn't
affect any other settings. Brilliant. Now my wife (and I) use this
feature all the time.

Previously, the Squeezebox had the same problem. There was no way my
wife was going to learn all the steps to play all the songs randomly on
the Squeezebox. Plus, it took a really long time to create the playlist
and sometimes the machine would timeout because I have a lot of songs.
Ugh

So this new Random Play plug-in is just wonderful. Very simple and
easy to use. Works instantly. I have moved it to the top-level menu
and use it all the time. I think that as more and more regular
people (e.g. non techies) start to buy and use the Squeezebox it is
important that we have easy-to-use commands for basic stuff like
listening to songs randomly. But if it remains a third-party plug-in,
many users will never know about it. That's why I suggest making it
part of the core product.

Just my 2 cents worth. And thanks again to kdf for writing that
plug-in!

Brett
