[slim] Am I doing it right?
Hello everyone! I apologize in advance if I'm posting in the wrong forum. I've got a pretty beefy type-1 hypervisor server that I'm using for various things (including a NAS server). Due to its size and the noise it produces, it is located in my basement, pretty far from my stereo system. I plan to use it as Daphile server as well (any drawbacks of using it instead of plain LMS on a Linux-based OS? What's the general consensus of Daphile here?). I would then get a cheap Raspberry Pi board and attach it to my stereo system. The Pi would hold a Squeezelite installation that feeds my DAC (which I remember is far apart from the Daphile server) with bit perfect audio (is it even possible to get bit perfect audio from it?). I would control the Squeezelite client with my Android devices using Orange Squeeze. Additionally, I would stream audio to my Windows PC using Squeezelite-X and my Android devices using Squeeze Player & Orange Squeeze. I also plan to stream audio remotely to my Android devices using ZeroTier (a VPN-like software supported by Daphile). Bonus question: let's say I'm not home and I want to feed my headphones Amp/DAC with bit perfect audio, will it be possible? Thanks for taking the time to read my thread! Yes I was just about to post here and say that I'd done that and it is now working as well as before. Thanks for all your input, everyone. Two questions. 1. Are some SD cards less reliable than others? I wonder if mine failed because I have a bad quality card. 2. This relates to this post kidstypike wrote: > You should have a bright green LED lit on the Digi HAT when the Pi is > powered up. I have no green light on mine, by the way. mandryka's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=53967 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110533 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Some Rasberry Pi / LMS questions for a complete beginner.
I'm going to add something which is going to contribute nothing to anything except antagonism and confusion. While the pi was out of order I was using a Squeezebox classic, digital optical output going into an external DAC. I'm now back to the pi with a hifiberry, optical output into the same dac and speakers and amp. And you know what? . . . . . . I think the berry sounds better! Maybe it's just the relief of having it working again which has put me in a positive frame of mind about it. mandryka's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=53967 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110533 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It doesn't surprise me at all that the Pi build sounds better. Googling produced this: 28143 I've no idea where that case came from, it's years old, I added some extension posts to make room for the Digi+ HAT. It's actually hanging on 2 screws (slots in case base) in a cupboard out of sight. +---+ |Filename: noLED.jpg| |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=28143| +---+ *Server - LMS 7.9.2 *Pi4B 4GB/pCP 6.0.0 18K library, playlists & LMS cache on SSD (ntfs) *Study -* Pi3B+/pCP 5.0.0/pi screen/HiFiBerry DAC+/jivelite, *Lounge* - Pi2/pCP 5.0.0 > HiFiBerry DIGI+ > AudioEngine DAC1 > AVI DM5 *Dining Room* - Squeezebox Boom *Garage* - Pi3B/Pi screen/HiFiBerry DAC+/pCP 5.0.0 > Edifier R980T *Spares* - 2xTouch, 1xSB3, 1xRadio, 6xRPi kidstypike's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10436 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110533 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I can't speak to Daphile particularly or the remote access, but the rest of your planned setup will work well, and is the standard approach for many (that is, server running LMS and holding files sitting far away, connected via ethernet to LAN, then some sort of endpoint (rpi running squeezelite, hardware squeezebox, or computer running squeezelite0, and all this controlled with almost any sort of smart phone/tablet. *Home:* VBA 4TB (2.5)>LMS 7.9.2>Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all ethernet) *Cottage:* VBA 3TB (2.4)>LMS 7.9.1>Touch>Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (ethernet, Radio WIFI) *Office:* Win10(64)>LMS 7.9.2>Squeezelite *The Wild (no internet): *PiCorePlayer 4.0 on rPi 3B+, hifiberry Dac+Pro, 4TB USB (LMS & Squeezelite) *Controllers:* iPhone6 & iPadAir2 (iPeng), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win10(64) laptop *Files:* ripping: dbpa > FLAC; post-rip: mp3tag, PerfectTunes; Streaming: Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110939 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Thanks for your reply. So you confirm that I will be able to get bit perfect audio from the Pi. I will be waiting for other opinions on Dapahile (what troubles me most is that Dapahile seems to be designed to work directly with a DAC without an additional Squeezelite installation, while I plan to use it without the DAC directly attached to it). Yes, you will get bit perfect audio output from the rPi/squeezelite. This combination makes an excellent endpoint. See the piCorePlayer site and threads at this forum for easy to follow installation instructions. https://www.picoreplayer.org/ *Home:* VBA 4TB (2.5)>LMS 7.9.2>Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all ethernet) *Cottage:* VBA 3TB (2.4)>LMS 7.9.1>Touch>Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (ethernet, Radio WIFI) *Office:* Win10(64)>LMS 7.9.2>Squeezelite *The Wild (no internet): *PiCorePlayer 4.0 on rPi 3B+, hifiberry Dac+Pro, 4TB USB (LMS & Squeezelite) *Controllers:* iPhone6 & iPadAir2 (iPeng), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win10(64) laptop *Files:* ripping: dbpa > FLAC; post-rip: mp3tag, PerfectTunes; Streaming: Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110939 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
