Devuan Jessie-to-Ascii upgrade report (AMD64):

LXDE with Slim display manager (task-lxde-desktop @norecommends), the
underlying base installation originates from an early netinstall-iso,
most probably the 2015 "Valentine" edition.

the upgrade went smoothly, besides

- a dpkg error for blueman (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.FileNotFound),
which disappeared after reboot (another dist-upgrade returned empty)

- at reboot, grub reported a "no symbol table" error, which could be
fixed by re-installing grub to the MBR of my first disk (where it had
  been before the upgrade, too)

- after the upgrade, I could no longer reboot/shutdown from within
LXDE, which could be solved by manually installing libpam-elogind

- the Logitech trackball is now driven by libinput instead of evdev,
so I had to add (append) the lost scroll wheel functionality to
  /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-libinput.conf

Updated from debian jessie to devuan ascii on a very minimal hosted
server (apache2 for testing purposes).

Changed sources.list to my own mirror and ascii
apt-get update
apt-get install devuan-keyring
apt-get dist-upgrade
Everything fine except that systemd will not be removed
Reboot after checking sysvinit core has been installed
apt-get dist-upgrade
And system is now devuan ascii!!!

Aren't you getting a half-minute delay on shutdown? There are some debian
bug reports about this with various fixes proposed. This one worked for me:
https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=8300#p8300

I don't know what to do about the missing messages.

I upgraded from Devuan jessie to Devuan ascii last week without
problems. However, after upgrading system shutdown from the XFCE menu
did not work any more. Shutting down manually via the linux console
('halt') did work. However during shutdown it then complained something
about crypto disks not being stopped (running encrypted root with lvm).

Now after reading this email I just ran another round of 'apt-get update
&& apt-get dist-upgrade' and things look a little better now: shutdown
via xfce menu works, however, during shutdown it does not show any of
the shutdown messages any more, so I cannot verify whether crypto disk
unmounting works any better now.

cheers,

David

I'm on it, so far checked md5 and it's okay and I dd to usb and it
boots to the installer. :)

Currently I'm making some new partitions to test on and that's going
to take awhile.  I will be installing TDE-Trinity for Stretch and get
back to you ASAP.

This install is from the current ASCII release with the 4.9.0-4 kernel
now fully upgraded and clean with TDE and it's working on 4 different
computers intel and amd from 2 cores to 8 cores.

Partitions are ready for new install.

Everything seems to be okay on this Dell Latitude E6430 laptop,
TDE-Trinity is installed and updated, I have another install going on
another computer, it's a T20 Dell server.

Your mini.iso has worked for me, this Dell T20 server is working fine.

Thank you,

For the record:

The following irregularities have already surfaced for fresh
installations using the current state of the repositories:
Installing SSH server in combination with a desktop environment
that originally depends on consolekit session management
results in elogind being installed (peculiar, but not harmful
per se) and a mismatch of the policykit backend libraries -
this definitely *is* a problem!

Note that in each of the cases listed below both consolekit
and elogind are present (weird, but not a problem in itself)
and the elogind PAM module libpam-elogind is installed, while
the consolekit PAM module libpam-ck-connector is missing -
which makes more or less sense, as these two are mutually
exclusive. *However*, and this is the crux, given that exact
constellation it would be correct to also have the matching
libpolkit-(backend|gobject)-elogind-1-0 packages, but instead
the corresponding *-consolekit-* packages are installed.
Thus, unfortunately something is still slightly off with the
polkit dependencies.

1. Standard install, Xfce + SSH server
 ii consolekit 0.4.6-6
 ii elogind 234.4-2
 ii libelogind0:amd64 234.4-2

2. Standard install, LXDE + SSH server

 ii lxqt-policykit-l10n 0.11.2-1
 ii policykit-1 0.105-18+devuan2.9
 ii policykit-1-gnome 0.105-6

3. Expert install, MATE + SSH server
 ii consolekit 0.4.6-6
 ii elogind 234.4-2
 ii libelogind0:amd64 234.4-2
 ii libpam-elogind:amd64 234.4-2
 ii libpolkit-agent-1-0:amd64 0.105-18+devuan2.9
 ii libpolkit-backend-1-0 0.105-18+devuan2.9
 ii libpolkit-backend-consolekit-1-0:amd64 0.105-18+devuan2.9
 ii libpolkit-gobject-1-0 0.105-18+devuan2.9
 ii libpolkit-gobject-consolekit-1-0:amd64 0.105-18+devuan2.9
 ii mate-polkit:amd64 1.16.0-2
 ii mate-polkit-common 1.16.0-2
 ii policykit-1 0.105-18+devuan2.9

Best regards
Urban

P.S.: In preliminary tests those DEs relying on elogind (e.g.
LXQt, Cinnamon) do not suffer from this bug and correctly get
a "pure" elogind session management with correctly matched
policykit backend|gobject libraries.

If I can add 1cent, if you encounter any problem in upgrading, please
include the following information in your report:

- desktop environment you are using;

- whether the corresponding task-*-desktop was installed or not before you
  upgraded;

- whether you had consolekit and/or elogind installed in the system
  *before* and *after* the upgrade;

- the list of libpolkit-* packages installed in the system *before*
  and *after* the upgrade;

Now is the time to help out. A usual, having a clean release depends
on each of us, the D1rs.
