This is correct. The category is not properly translated into other
languages, so it is safer to have it typed and the x-ref restricted to
the number.

As background, I once translated some chapters of A. Pitoniak's Macro
book and I run into troubles with the untranslatable x-ref category
"listing".

[libreoffice-documentation] X-refs to figures & tables in LO user guides

2020-04-19 Thread Jean Weber
Olivier,
Please confirm that my understanding is correct about x-refs to
figures and tables in the user guides: The category name ("Figure" or
Table") should be typed, and the x-ref set to "Numbering" not
"Category and Number". (This is a change from our practice a few years
ago.)

I notice that the Draw Guide chapters Peter S has published (after
Claire's review) have the figure refs done in the old style. I think
they need to be changed, but I wanted to verify this with you first.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Updating Writer Guide from v6.0 to 6.4

2020-04-19 Thread Jean Weber
Kenneth,
I don't find any notes to myself, other than the general comment that
the Styles and Formatting pane/deck/whatever-it's-called in the
Sidebar is now just Styles. Also I suspect there's some lack of
consistency in the use of sidebar terminology, and in the use of terms
to described tabbed pages in a dialog. I don't remember what our
latest consensus is (if we have one) on these topics, and I'm fairly
sure the Contributors' Guide is no help because it's not been updated.
(I may get around to updating the relevant bits of it, after
researching what it should say - but don't count on that.)

Sorry, I meant "sidebar table of contents", which are created when one
ticks the box for "Export bookmarks" in the PDF Export dialog.

2020-04-19 Thread Jean Weber
I've now checked, and it appears that I was misremembering; the
website link does not appear to pick up the file from the wiki.

As for the lack of sidebar bookmarks, I realise that I never remember
to tick that box on the PDF Export dialog. I'll put that on my
checklist for future books. Sorry, and thank you.

If you know how to replace a file on the wiki, you can do it yourself.
I think the website link picks up the file from the wiki, but if not, then
Olivier is the person to fix that.

If/when I’m on the computer later today, I’ll have a look.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide Quality and images

On 4/18/20 10:10, Robert Großkopf wrote:

Hi Rob,

Could be it is only a problem in the translated book. I have had a look

I am not sure that it is in the translation. Here is why:

Google's translation:

The field names "first name", "last name" and "birthday" should be
clear. In addition, a field with the name "ID" was entered. This field
will later hold a value that is the unique property of each record. Such
a unique key field is necessary for the embedded database. Otherwise, no
data records can be entered in the table. This key field is referred to
as “primary key” in databases.

However, this paragraph needs to be rewritten to make it more
meaningful. As Robert has pointed out, tables can be created in the Base
GUI. Data can be added to such a table using Tools > SQL. My question to
Robert is this: How can a table without a primary key be accessed in
terms of forms, and reports? I know queries can be created with Tools >
SQL.

[libreoffice-documentation] Re: Writer Guide 6.4

2020-04-19 Thread Jean Weber
I have placed an annotated copy of Chapter 13, Mail Merge, in the
“Annotated pre draft” folder for WG6.4.

I have made some notes on things I know need to be done to update this
chapter. I have not checked everything, so there are probably other
things to do. It hasn't been properly reviewed and updated in a long
time. (Yes, I didn't do a proper job last time.)

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started Guide for LO 6.4

2020-04-19 Thread Stephen Fanning
 All,

I have (finally) finished my 2nd review of the draft Getting Started with
Base chapter of the 6.4 Getting Started Guide. Many apologies for the time
this took, but that was mainly due to the number of significant issues that
were found in the document when I downloaded it after the 1st review had
concluded.

I am recommending that this chapter re-starts its review cycle and Dan
Lewis has kindly agreed to do the 1st review of this update.

The updated file is in the Drafts folder (with changes tracked).

Regards,

Steve Fanning

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Draw Guide — 3D Effects

2020-04-19 Thread Regina Henschel

Hi Martin,

Martin Srebotnjak schrieb am 19-Apr-20 um 11:15:

Thanks, Peter, for noting that.

It seems that we need a wiki page with all the thing that are not funcional

I think, a wiki page is not the right place. Keep it in Bugzilla. We
have currently 310 open bugs with Mac OS [1].

You could create a [META] bug and add all reports, for which it is
verified, that the report is indeed a bug and that only Mac OS is affected.

[1]
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/buglist.cgi?bug_status=UNCONFIRMED_status=NEW_status=ASSIGNED_status=REOPENED_id=1120543_sys=Mac%20OS%20X%20%28All%29=LibreOffice_format=advanced

Since most programmers of LO write/say what Regina wrote here, it would
maybe help if TDF could buy one mac and have it available to LO programmers
and testers via remote desktop to text/locate/fix such issues.

It should be no problem for TDF to provide suitable hardware on loan to
a developer. The real problem is to find a LibreOffice developer with
interest and knowledge in Mac OS to work on the bugs besides his daily job.

I have no idea, whether something like remote desktop would work, but
infra team should know.

For testers exists the similar problem: Do we have testers, who would
regularly test on Mac OS?

Kind regards
Regina

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice Base Guide Quality and images

2020-04-19 Thread Pulkit Krishna
Hello Peter and Rob,
I thought about Peter when I first read Rob's message. Perhaps, if Rob does
the first review of the chapters of the base guide 6.4 then Peter can take
them for their second review and make sure good English is used. That way
both tasks would be fulfilled- database errors would be removed and English
would become good. As for figures I agree with Jean. We should do all this
in the v6.4 not v6.2. We should let v6.2 be published because Base Guide
has not been updated since v4.0 I think. I have already prepared the drafts
of first 6 chapters of v6.4. If Rob can take it for its first review it
would be great. I think Peter, you are busy with Draw guide. Can you manage
the two at once? As for time I think we have much for v6.4. v7.0 is going
to be released in August, so if we complete v6.4 by end of July, and it
would have no or only little mistakes, then I think it wouldn't take more
than a month to update it to v7.0. It depends how base changes in going to
v7.0.

What is the time planning for the V7 release of the manual?

actually a dev from that specific area could work/help faster with the

Peter,
For the record: I disagree that *all* figures need a caption (with a figure
number), nor do all figures need a reference in the text, but yes *most* of
them do need one or both.
