Re: [libreoffice-documentation] How to spell "CustomShape"

2022-06-03 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Regina,

Taking the sentence you gave as the first example " Many Custom Shapes have
handles to alter the geometry".

I do not see any problem if the term "custom shapes" is translated in this
context. Actually, I think that keeping it in English only will look weird
when the rest of the sentence is translated. Also, it might be better to
use small letters as in "custom shapes".

For example, in pt-BR (translating "custom shapes"):
Muitas formas personalizadas possuem alças para alterar a geometria.

The example above looks better to me than (using "Custom Shapes"
capitalizing first letters):
Muitas Custom Shapes possuem alças para alterar a geometria.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] How to spell "CustomShape"

2022-06-02 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Regina,

In ODF 1.3 part 3, section 10.6 the term "Custom Shapes" is used to
describe the element . So I believe you could use
"Custom Shape(s)" to write this guide. It would be suitable from the
standpoint of developers.

[libreoffice-documentation] Issue concerning shortcuts in MacOS

2022-01-21 Thread Rafael Lima
Hello everyone,

We received the following bug report in Bugzilla:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=146789

Basically the user mentioned an incorrect behavior of shortcuts in MacOS. I
do not have a Mac to confirm this, but if this issue is confirmed, the
Getting Started Guide 7.3 could receive more updates concerning shortcuts
on MacOS.

Hi Martin and Ilmari,

Yesterday I edited the Release Notes for LO 7.3 and accidentally duplicated
entry 263. This was the only one I edited and now it is fixed.

I did not check if there are any other duplicate IDs though.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Math Guide for 7.x?

2021-11-22 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Jean,

I took a look at the release notes and a few minor changes were made to LO
Math since 7.0.
- 7.1: Math has now a full support of HTML colors
- 7.2: It's now possible to scale the code input box.
- 7.3: Nothing so far

If you can do the initial updating of the chapters, I'll be happy to review
them.

[libreoffice-documentation] First review of CG7212 / Checking out CG7216

2021-10-29 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi all!

I finished the first review of CG7212 on Macros. The file is in the WIP
folder.

Steve, I made a few changes and suggestions in the file. Most notably, I
formatted the Basic code using Andrew Pitonyak's code formatter extension,
which was also used in the GS guide. So now both chapters have the same
code formatting.

I am now checking out CG7216 for a first review.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Calc Guide 7.2 - Chapter 6

2021-10-19 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Steve,

Actually I was a bit confused when I looked at the "Archive" folder and
found the file "CG7202-EnterEditFormatData_SF_OH07Sep2021.odt" which
included the OH initials.

However, the "Work in Progress" only had the
"CG7202-EnterEditFormatData_SF_04Sep2021.odt" file. So I figured maybe
Olivier had done some changes but for some reason his file was only in the
Archive.

But now I guess I should have only considered the file in the WIP folder as
the starting point for the review.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Improper use of embedvars in online help content

2021-10-19 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Martin,

I'll take care of fixing these issues on master.

I was responsible for introducing some of these errors... Now I see that
this is troublesome for translators and future help pages won't have these
embedvars.

Let me know whenever you come across issues like these.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Guides Bullet List cleanup

2021-07-14 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Olivier,

The following macro will iterate over all paragraphs and remove all of the
items that contain empty strings (both in numbered and bulleted lists).

Sub RemoveEmptyItems
 Dim oEnum, oPar
 oEnum = ThisComponent.Text.CreateEnumeration()
 Do While oEnum.HasMoreElements()
  oPar = oEnum.NextElement()
  nsName = oPar.NumberingStyleName
  If nsName <> "" Then
   parText = oPar.GetString()
   If parText = "" Then
'This is reached if the list has an entry that is empty
ThisComponent.Text.RemoveTextContent(oPar)
   End If
  End If
 Loop
End Sub

Hi Steve,

I agree with you. There's no rush to make a decision on this topic. It'll
be a great topic for discussion in the upcoming meeting.

However I haven't been able to attend our Thursdays meetings due to other
appointments I have at work. Hope I'll be able to attend the next one.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Calc's ENCODEURL, FILTERXML and WEBSERVICE functions

2021-06-08 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Steve,

I have just read the three wiki pages you mentioned and I could not find
any issues with them. IMO they're very thorough and well written.

In the WEBSERVICE page, section "Accessing non-XML data", I would add the
following:

--
The WEBSERVICE function returns the raw result from an HTTP/ HTTPS request.
Hence, if the URI address corresponds to any type of text content (e.g.
CSV, XML, TXT, MD, etc), the raw content will be returned and stored in the
cell.
The example below will return the raw contents of the file README.md stored
in the given URI.
=WEBSERVICE("https://opengrok.libreoffice.org/download/help/README.md;)
--

The wiki pages for FILTERXML and ENCODEURL are perfect!

BTW, there's a huge difference between the Help contents and the wiki
(which is far more complete) and I fear that some users may not find all
the contents they look for in the help pages. Do you think we could add
links in the help pages referencing the corresponding wiki pages?

For example:
To learn more refer to the WEBSERVICE wiki page. (with a link to the wiki
pages)

Rafael Lima

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Question about the Fontwork toolbar documentation

2021-05-12 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Regina,

Thanks for your prompt response.

I agree with you that this feature shouldn't be hidden from users in LO
Impress/Draw. I'll open a bug report suggesting to enable it by default in
the Format Menu.

I also agree that it should have a different name: "Text along path" seems
a good idea.

If it becomes enabled by default, then the Draw Guide needs to be updated
to describe this feature.

Kind regards,
Rafael

[libreoffice-documentation] Question about the Fontwork toolbar documentation

2021-05-12 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi all!

I am working on a Documentation bug about the Fontwork help page.
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=139469

Then I noticed that the Format - Text Box and Shape - Fontwork menu only
exists by default in Writer.
https://help.libreoffice.org/7.2/en-US/text/shared/01/0528.html

However, on Impress and Draw, this option is not present in the menu. And
the help page clearly states that if the user wants to use it, he/she needs
to go to Options > Customize and manually insert it in the menu.
https://help.libreoffice.org/7.2/en-US/text/shared/01/0528.html?=SHARED

So my question is: Is there a reason for this feature to have been removed
from the default Menubar in Impress and Draw? This feature is especially
useful in presentations and drawings, so I don't see why to not have this
feature in Impress/Draw and add a note to the help page about it.

I also noticed that the Draw Guide (version 6.4) and the Writer Guide (7.1)
focus mainly on the Fontwork gallery and do not describe the features in
the aforementioned help page.

I would appreciate it if anyone could provide some background on why these
decisions were made, so I can update the help pages.

Regards,
Rafael Lima

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Calc Functions Wiki - CONVERT function

2021-04-26 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Steve!

I read the CONVERT wiki page and I believe it is very well written and
complete.

I do not have knowledge about all the units of measurement covered by the
CONVERT function, but of all the ones I know, everything seems correct to
me.

I also read the current page in the Help
https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-US/text/scalc/01/04060116.html?DbPAR=CALC#bm_id3148446

I think the help page can be improved. The main gaps are (i) the unit
symbols in the help page do not have names (as in the wiki) and (ii) the
examples in the wiki are more varied and could be added to the Help page.

Maybe you could open an enhancement request at Bugzilla to suggest the
contents from the wiki be incorporated in the Help page. I would volunteer
to do that.

Regards,
Rafael

Re: Spacing Guide release, was: Re: [libreoffice-documentation] First review of CG7100-Preface and CG7101-Introduction

2021-03-15 Thread Rafael Lima
Hello everyone!

Here's my take on this subject.

I believe that when updating the guides to minor releases (7.1 to 7.4) we
should focus exclusively on the aspects listed in the Release Notes. Hence,
we should take the previously published version (say 7.0 now) and update
only chapters and sections that are directly related to something listed in
the release notes. If something was not mentioned in the release notes,
then it should remain unchanged.

If we follow this guideline, we can reuse previous chapters entirely. This
way, if only a single person reads a chapter and concludes that it has not
been affected by any changes in the release notes, then no further reviews
are necessary and no modifications are made to the chapter.

For chapters affected by the release notes, then I believe one person
updating it and a subsequent single review will suffice.

I think this is a great topic for this week's meeting.

Regards,
Rafael Lima

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Call for ideas on Technical Writing

2021-03-11 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi!

Building upon Regis' suggestion, OpenOffice has a 1.600-page long
Developer's Guide. I myself have referred to this book on some occasions,
because it is a good introduction to the API.

https://wiki.openoffice.org/w/images/d/d9/DevelopersGuide_OOo3.1.0.pdf

However, LibreOffice needs its own book, since differences between LO and
OO are increasing over time. Hence, one possible idea would be to create a
LO Developer's Guide.

The main problem is that 1.600 pages is too long, so this could be broken
down into two separate proposals.

Refael Lima

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Starmath code documentation

2021-02-27 Thread Rafael Lima
Dante,

The only "documentation" I know of is in this link:
https://www.mail-archive.com/dev@sw.openoffice.org/msg00200.html

This is actually an overview of the starmath module. This link is in the
README file inside the "starmath" folder.

I also searched on Google and on OpenOffice's website to see if I could
find anything else, but there was nothing there.

Rafael

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Starmath syntax hightlight

2021-01-29 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Dante!

Thank you for the initiative! Syntax highlighting is something I have
always wished to see in StarMath. I am myself a frequent user of StarMath,
so I can tell that this will be a great addition to the application.

The current Formula Editor does not provide a good experience, especially
when the formula gets very long. Also, it becomes hard to spot syntax
mistakes if there's no highlighting.

I'll pull and build your patch later today to see how it performs. Then
I'll try to provide some feedback from the user perspective. However, my
experience with the LibreOffice codebase is limited, so I can't help with
automated tests.

Rafael Lima

2021-01-25 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Team,

I finished the second review of Chapter 4, Getting Started with Writer. The
reviewed file is in the WIP folder and the previous version is in the
Archived folder.I made a few changes and left some comments for
consideration during the final edit. All changes were recorded using the
Record Track Changes feature.

I believe the chapter is ready for final edit and publication.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Metadata Loss LO 7.1.0.2

2021-01-21 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi!

I ran a few tests here using LO 7.2 alpha, nightly (I don't have 7.1 RC2
here):

1) When I create a new document by going to File > New > Text Document
(without choosing a template), the Properties fields are all blank. But if
I change them and save the file, all is fine when I reopen it.

2) When I create a new document from a template (say, the Default
template), then the Tile field has the name of the template ("Default" in
this case). Changing it and saving the file is working without any issues.

Let's see if anyone has 7.1 RC2 to test this as well.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] GS7010-PrintExportEmailSign - Screenshot Streched and Cropped on Page 8

2021-01-15 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi. I've had this issue when I update the image by pasting a new image over
the old one. For some reason the image frame does not resize to fit the new
image.

What I do to fix this is right-click the image, then go to Properties. In
the Crop tab I click the Original Size button.

Hope this helps.

[libreoffice-documentation] Re: Second Review - GS7014-CustomizingLO

2021-01-13 Thread Rafael Lima
Hello Everyone!

I finished my second review of GS7014-CustomizingLO. It is now in the WIP
folder. I moved the previous version to the Archive folder.

I basically made minor changes in the text and formatting (all changes were
recorded using Record Track Changes).

However, there is one change worth mentioning: I updated Figure 8 because
LO now recommends icons with 24 x 24 pixels instead of 16 x 16. Because I
took the screenshot using Ubuntu, maybe Jean will want to update it using
Windows in his final edit, since all other screenshots were taken on the
Windows version.

Cheers,
Rafael

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Illustrations used in user guides

2020-12-15 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Peter,

I brought this up because this requirement was present in the previous
version of the Contributor's Guide. When I first read the guide and then
started my first chapter update, I created some new images and saved them
in an ODG file. Later on I tried to figure out where to upload the ODG file
into NextCloud by looking for other ODG files, but found none.

Now, my opinion is that saving ODG files is only useful if the figure has
lots of annotations (arrows, callouts, etc). In such cases, reviewers can
edit the image and update annotations. In cases where the images are simply
a screenshot of a dialog without any annotation, then it's not really
necessary to upload the image to NextCloud because it would be very simple
to take a new screenshot if necessary.

As for the use of ODG by translators, maybe these files are not very
helpful to them. Consider a case where there is a dialog screenshot (the
dialog is in English) and lots of annotations in English too. A translator
will have to take a new screenshot and change the annotations manually.
Hence, the existence of an ODG file wouldn't be very helpful. We could ask
their opinion on this matter.

I think we have two possible paths:
1) We can drop this requirement from the Contributor's guide;
2) We could improve this procedure to provide more directions on how to
handle images. For example, for each chapter ODT file there could be an ODG
file with the same name containing all the images prepared for the chapter.
We could also highlight that this should be done only for images that have
annotations.

What path do you think is best?

Regards,
Rafael Lima

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Producing LO Guides

2020-12-14 Thread Rafael Lima
Hello everyone!

I read the new version of Chapter 2 (Producing LO Guides) prepared by Peter
for the Contributor's Guide. I did not make any changes to the document,
but instead added a few comments with suggestions.

The commented version is in the Work in Progress folder and is named
*2-ProducingLOGuides-PS-RL-20201214.odt*

In my honest opinion, I think the proposed changes in the structure and the
new contents added to the chapter are a step in the right direction. From
the standpoint of a new contributor, I think that this new version is more
straightforward and addresses the main questions and mistakes that
newcomers make.

I really liked that the discussion between "updating" and "reviewing" a
chapter was brought to the beginning of Chapter 2.

As for the proposed change in the versioning system (using sequential
numbers instead of dates), I tend to agree with this new approach. We
actually do not use the date values and I think that sequential numbers
will look clearer and will be enough for our internal control.

Best regards,
Rafael Lima

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Thoughts on Rafael Lima's suggestions in updated Preface of Writer Guide

2020-12-07 Thread Rafael Lima
Hello everyone!

Thank you Jean for your feedback. I believe you're right bringing this
discussion to the mailing list because it might affect other guides as
well. I'd like to make some additional remarks:

1) I checked out the AOO forum and there are some recent questions made by
users, but it's nowhere near the amount of questions we receive in Ask
LibreOffice. I believe that the link to OpenOffice forums should be removed
because many features work differently now (menus, dialogs, etc) and this
might confuse users instead of helping them. An alternative to removing the
link is to add a Caution note explaining that there might be differences
between OO and LO.

2) The "Check for Updates" feature is not available in my installation of
LibreOffice. I'm using LO 7.0.3.1 on Ubuntu 20.10 (the PPA version). AFIK
the PPA maintainers disable some features in their build of LO, which might
explain the lack of the "Check for Updates" feature. Maybe we could add a
Note explaining that the "Check for Updates" may not be available in
packages provided by third-parties.

Regards,
Rafael

Hi Jean!

I have just reviewed all your suggestions. In my opinion, the improvements
you made to the chapter made it more concise, which is great for a chapter
in the Getting Started Guide.

I left comments on 2 changes related to those Notes/Tips. The reviewed
version is in the WIP folder.

[libreoffice-documentation] Broken link - Wiki on Python Macros

2020-11-23 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Team,

I am updating the Getting Started chapter on Macros. The section about
Python scripting makes reference to APSO (Alternate Python Script
Organizer), which is also linked in the Wiki page ("Designing & Developing
Python Applications"):
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Macros/Python_Design_Guide

The link for APSO in the Wiki page is:
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/ru/extensions/show/apso-alternative-script-organizer-for-python

However this link is now broken. The weird thing is that I use APSO and I
downloaded it a few months ago using this link.

Then I checked the Extensions (https://extensions.libreoffice.org/) page
and the APSO extension is no longer listed there.

Does anyone know if and why it has been removed? Is it just a temporary
issue? This is a very important plugin for macro developers and I wish it
will still be available in the Extensions page. I would also like to keep
the reference to APSO in the guide, but for that it needs to be available
for download.

Many thanks

Rafael

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] LibreOffice 7 download for Ubuntu 16.04 32bit

2020-11-17 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Peter!

I don't think there is a 32-bit build of LibreOffice 7.0. The LibreOffice
PPA used in Ubuntu only provides LO 7.0 for Ubuntu >= 18.04.

https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/libreoffice-7-0

The most recent LibreOffice version for Ubuntu 16.04 seems to be LO 6.2.

https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/libreoffice-6-2

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Need help applying styles

2020-11-09 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi! Thanks for everyone's support! I followed the recommendations and
started pasting as Unformatted text. This way it always works.

I think Jean is right. The documents have undergone so many revisions that
maybe there is some odd formatting in their "internal code".

Dan and Jean, thanks for being willing to look further into the original
files, but I think it is not going to be necessary anymore. I am now
finishing the chapter and I think now I can fix problems like these.

Thanks!

[libreoffice-documentation] Need help applying styles

2020-11-09 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Team,

I am currently working with the Getting Started with Math chapter. However,
I am having a lot of trouble applying styles to this document.

Because this guide consists of copying and pasting some paragraphs from the
Math Guide, when I paste text into the document the pasted paragraph
inherits a different style than the one that was previously there. To fix
that, I select the pasted text and apply the style I want, for example
"Text Body". The problem is that the style has no effect on the document.
If I double click the style, it simply doesn't get applied to the selected
text. This has happened many times in this document.

I attached the file I'm working on now. On page 18, the first paragraph in
the "Writing derivatives" section is using the style "Definition Term", but
I want to change it to "Body Text". No matter what I do, I cannot apply the
desired style to this paragraph. I tried using 2 different machines and
operating systems, but the problem is still there.

I am using LO 7.0.3. Can anybody help me?

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Writer Guide - Checkout for First Review

2020-10-20 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Dave!

You're right. What I'll do is update the chapters from version 6.4 to 7.0.

I agree with you that it would be better to update just one chapter at a
time. However, the Preface and the first two chapters seem smaller and
simpler to update. This is why I checked out all of them at once.

For future chapters I'll check them out one at a time.

Regards,

Rafael

When I first checked out the Math Guide, I thought it would take me longer
to finish updating it. That's why I expected to return it by Oct 20.

However, I managed to finish updating it earlier than expected. The actual
return dates are:
1) October 12th (first return)
2) October 14th (second return with revisions following comments by Olivier)
3) October 15th (final revision by Olivier)

I believe there is nothing else to add to the Math Guide. Hence the guide
is available for you to do your review.

Kind regards,

Rafael Lima

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] [VOTE] On changes to documentation workflow.

2020-10-13 Thread Rafael Lima
I vote for Option 1.

Reason: I still do not feel the need for a more complex versioning system.

[libreoffice-documentation] Math Guide 7.0 upload to NextCloud

2020-10-12 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi!

I have just uploaded the updated version of the Math Guide into the Work in
Progress folder.

Because this is my first contribution, feel free to point out anything that
needs to be revised further.

I used the "Track Changes" commando throughout my work, but I disabled the
"Show Changes" button. If anyone wishes to see the changes, remember to
enable the "Show Changes" button.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Guide Covers for 7.0

2020-10-12 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi Olivier!

I also opened under Okular in Kubuntu 20.04 and had no issues except a
> delay in rendering the page.
>

You are right. The files do open in Okular. The thing is that they take
about 15 seconds to finish loading and in the meantime the pages are shown
as empty pages. And I had not waited enough to see them open.

Just as a tip, for those in Linux it is possible to use the command-line
tool *pdftoppm* to export the Covers PDF file into high-resolution PNGs.

pdftoppm -png -rx 300 -ry 300 Guid_Covers.pdf guide_covers

Cheers

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Guide Covers for 7.0

2020-10-12 Thread Rafael Lima
Hi!

I am using Linux and I had a similar problem as reported by Jean.If I open
the PDF file using Okular, all pages are blank. However, if I open the PDF
with Firefox's PDF viewer, all is fine and the images load really fast.

Also, if I open the cover files in ODT format they turn out to be too heavy
and it is very hard to scroll down the document and make any editing. As
discussed in our last meeting, this is because the image in the ODT file is
in SVG format.

What I did was open the SVG files using Inkscape and export as a 300 dpi
PNG file. Then I inserted them as PNG images into the ODT files. Now
they're lighter to load and navigate.
