Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide 7.3 is published

2022-06-07 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Olivier,

Thank you for publishing this version of the document.

I am interested in reviewing / updating Chapter 3 (Tables) and have put
my initials against it in the tracking spreadsheet. This chapter makes
use of the Media_without_Macros.odb database and, in case it needs some
updates for better figures or any other reason, I have added that item
to the spreadsheet and placed my initials against it.

I'm not sure how long my work on these two items will take and have
reflected that in the spreadsheet too.

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide BG7309 - Macros

2022-05-15 Thread flywire
Tweaking the template can resolve almost all code colorization presentation
issues as explained below. (Process issues can be worked on separately.)

Key findings:
* Process is a bit of a black art
* LibreOffice_7.x_Template.ott has no Character Styles for colored computer
code
* Code Colorizer Formatter
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/en/extensions/show/71 is used but an
extension bug ignores the configuration dialog Font name, Text sizes and
Tab width
* Fortunately, the extension does not define styles defined in a document
* The Getting Started Guide 7.3 code looks good but Character Styles for
colored code seem to have been manually reformatted
* Adhoc processes will continue to occur in the absence of a standard
process as demonstrated in the Getting Started Guide 7.3 which essentially
duplicates character style trees with _LOCodeBase and OOoComputerCode

Suggested template workaround changes for existing extension:
* Use Paragraph Style Code Font Size of 10pt (extension mixes sizes and end
of line comment bug affects following line)
* Use Paragraph Style Code Spacing Do not add spacing to paragraphs of the
same style (reduces BG7309 page count by 15% and looks better)
* Use Character Style OOoComputerCode parent of Code (to carry style
through as intended)
* Character Style Code descendants must only configure color

Furthermore, define the following Character Styles in the Documentation
template instead of the extension:
OOoComputerCode
_OOoComputerBase
_OOoComputerComment Grey
_OOoComputerBaseNoLocale
_OOoComputerSpecial
_OOoComputerLiteral Red
_OOoComputerNumber Red
_OOoComputerKeyWord Blue
_OOoComputerAltKeyWord Blue
_OOoComputerIdentGreen

The LibreOffice color palette should be used, for example, assuming no
color shades: (Grey), Orange Accent, Blue 1, Green 1. Other styles might be
needed for Bash, SQL, Java, and XML.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide 7.3

2022-05-14 Thread Olivier Hallot

Hello Team

I have reviewed and published BG7302-CreatingADatabase (actually it was
named BG7402 in WIP folder, fixed)

I also reviewed and published BG7303 Tables, BG7306 Reports and BG7307
Linking to Databases.

I am revising BG7308 Database tasks, after Dev review and remarks. As
side note, Dev's remarks made me fix a dialog and Help page in source
code related to Direct SQL statements. Thanks Dev!

So we are left with BG7308 (me) and BG7305 (Pulkit) to finish the Base
Guide 7.3.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide - New Chapter 2

2022-05-07 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi flywire,

Thanks for the comments, which I have reviewed and actioned as appropriate.

I have rejected:

•    Some comments that seem to be simply changing the order of words in
sentences that already seem reasonably well structured and clear.

•    Comments that propose adding more detail about the process of
downloading and installing an ODBC driver, and then creating an ODBC
data source name (DSN). I have deliberately assumed that this has little
to do with Base and is, or should be, described in the documentation for
the relevant ODBC driver. If these actions are not described adequately
in a particular example of a driver’s documentation, then it might be
better to propose improvements there rather than trying to rectify the
problem in the Base Guide.

I have updated the date in the file name and returned the chapter to the
NextCloud WIP folder, moving previous versions to the Archived folder.

Having spent a fair amount of time already on this chapter, I will leave
others to process any further comments raised by any reviewers.

Regards,

Steve

The revised chapter is well written and much easier to read with a lot of
good information. It's good to see it links the Getting Started Guide and
includes the SQLite database.

I'm most familiar with SQLite after working through it in detail to create
this section for the current guide so I've focused on it as an example.
Issues are noted in the comments and indicative text is given with tracked
changes. The intention is for discussion.

My overall view is the guide is too confusing for creating a simple SQLite
database. The SQLite process is fairly simple but it is confused by being
guided through a complicated install with links to many other places with
exceptions to follow. I'm very familiar with the process but I couldn't
keep track of the SQLite process using a pdf on a PC. Options should really
be tested with a few typical users, especially the likes of SQLite which is
well down the list.

I suggest a summary after each heading where other parts of the guide are
referred to for the details. This would likely be enough for many users
leaving the references for additional guidance as required. The alternative
would be to start with creating the simplest database and work through to
the more complex.

The connecting with ODBC Initial preparation has two clearly separate parts
which, to make it easier to navigate, need to be split under headings for
Install ODBC Driver and Configure database ODBC connection. ODBC driver
installation is generally well done but configuring database ODBC
connection refers to installation instructions that don't exist and vary by
OS.

referred to for the details.

ODBC driver
installation is generally well done but configuring database ODBC
connection refers to installation instructions that don't exist and vary by
OS.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide - New Chapter 2

2022-05-03 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi All,

I have placed a proposed new version of Chapter 2 in the WIP folder,
moving all previous versions of the chapter to the Archived folder. I
hope it is an improvement.

The chapter has essentially been re-written and so I recommend that it
be given a thorough review before issue. Because of the level of change
throughout the chapter since the previous draft, changes are not tracked
in the document.

I wasn't sure how to handle the reviews that have already been done on
the previous version of the chapter within the tracking spreadsheet and
so I did nothing. Perhaps Olivier could handle that as he sees fit.

Many thanks to Robert Großkopf for his assistance and advice during my
work on this chapter.

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide 7.3: Deadline set May 31st and Chapter BG7310

2022-05-03 Thread Olivier Hallot

Hi team

I'm setting May 31st as the deadline to publish the Base Guide 7.3, with
the available revisions at the date.

The file BG7310-DatabaseMaintenance_SF_VN_OH03May2022.odt had all SF and
VN suggestions reviewed and committed. Then I set track changes enabled
and added a couple of comments where I found the text unclear.

I also added BG7310-DatabaseMaintenance.odt to the Published-Rev0/
folder with my changes self-approved. If my comments in the WIP folder
are addressed before may 31st, I'll replace the file in the
/published-rev0/ folder.

Kind regards

- All code has extra space between the lines, template Paragraph style
"Code" seems to need "Do not add space between paragraphs of the same

- html renders code lines with coloured background but extra space between

- all the code comments and text in strings are in size 10pt font and the

- will need a final check for orphan paragraphs which should be considered
within template styles

Inconsistencies in GS7313-GettingStartedWithMacros.odt with template:

Steve is working on the chapter 2 of the Base Guide and I took the lead

am late. Some of the chapters are published and I set a Master document
to assemble the book continuously.

A lot has changed in the Documentation team since my last contributions and
I am confused by some changes and how they work. I will try to read the

be used in Nextcloud and the tracking spreadsheet has also changed. The
template used for chapters was changing by the time I left and it has
changed completely. One thing that has not changed much is Base

someone would guide me if I do something wrong.

I don't think we did so many changes, the edit-revision process is still
the same however we want to test if we publish our guides (Base being
the first) in a continuous manner, "as is" and update it indicating
"revisions" in a periodic basis.

Like "Base Guide 7.3 Rev 1"
"Base Guide 7.3 Rev 2"

For now, I have taken BG7305-Queries for second review and the expected
return date is 26 April.

Thanks for that.

Side Note: I am getting a notice on Nextcloud - Group folder "LibreOffice
Documentation" is almost full (93%). I think this should go to infra but I
just added it here if somebody knows anything about it.

I also noticed that. It may require a housekeeping job by ourselves or
it may also be a setting in Nextcloud installation. I'll jump in.

I have reviewed the Base Guide Macro chapter BG7309, with the following

- Accepted all suggestions by Steve Fanning
- cleanup of anchors, frames, styles, Basic and Python code using Andrew
Pitonyak source code coloring extension.
- Added section on ScriptForge by flywire (fixed typos and code
formatting. A second review is advisable as some commented lines were
left in the code)

The file is in WIP folder for further review with track changes enabled.

BG7309-Macros_SF_24Jan2022_OH_15Mar2022.odt

I also added a version in the Published folder and hooked to the master

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide - sample databases provided with the book

2021-12-28 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello everybody,

Dev has very kindly volunteered to look at the sample databases that are
publicly availably and used throughout the Base Guide (BG).

While reviewing Chapter 1 of the BG I noticed a few problems with  the
"Media_without_Macros.odb" database as follows. Dev, would you be able
to correct these issues in your “master” version?

1. The name of the Adress table is spelt incorrectly (should be Address).
2. The relationships (at Tools > Relationships) don’t appear to be
complete. For example, the Recall table should have a link to the
Loan table; the Gender, rel_Reader_Schoolclass, and Gender tables
should be linked to the Reader table.
3. On the Loan form, should “current Loan” have an uppercase “C”?
4. On the Loan form, when a reader has overdue media, then the string
“Loan temporary locked!” is appended to the blue string in the
middle of the form. Should this read “Loan temporarily locked!”?
5. The Recall report would probably benefit from some wording changes
to improve its use of English (I can provide more detailed comments
   if needed).
6. The content of the data in the tables should be anglicized where
   appropriate.

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide 72 master document

2021-12-27 Thread Olivier Hallot

Hi Team

Seasons Greetings!

Since the fix on master documents by Michel Stahl from Allotropia [1], I
managed to create a master document for the latest Base Guide, as an
exercise, for my own.

The set of chapters are in the cloud at
/LibreOffice Documentation/English/Base
Guide/7.2/Archived/BG72_Master_Doc.zip

I had to tweak a bit some missing parts from the original template for a
master document. Actually a few.

- Cover and Back cover are new page styles with the covers as background
PNG, respectively;

- Copyright and chapters TOC were wrapped in a section with hidden
control activated by the master variable 'book eq 1'. Chapters don't
have this variable, so Copyright and chapter TOC are visible, but hidden
in Master document.
Trick: you cannot wrap an existing TOC in a outer section. You need to
remove it, create the section and then add the TOC inside the section.

- Left some comments for next release, just remove them to get the full
book as a PDF export directly from the MD.

I think that assembling a Guide with a master document is now a piece of
cake.

Kind regards

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide - updated Preface

2021-12-06 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello All,

I have compiled the 7.2 Base Guide into one ODT file, and generated the
PDF for the book. All files are in the Published folder in NextCloud.

All is ready for final checking before publication and hopefully Jean
will still have time available to look at this.

Regards,

Steve

Make sure that  Edit > Track Changes > Record is checked. Then make the
changes you want to make. You can also explain why you think the change
should be made in comment-forms of the document. When you save the
document, it will contain the original text and your changes. The author
can then check what you have done and either accept or reject your changes.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide Chapter 10 - back from review into feedback folder w/1 edit

2020-06-24 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

Finished reading over Chapter 10 this afternoon. I did make one edit
to the file and that was to pretty much replace the next to last
paragraph talking about performance problems with HSQLdb and referring
to issues from version 3.5, then that those issues were fixed in 4.1
and it just seems like that should all go away for a version 6.4
release.

What I added was a general comment about performance issues and when
to look at moving from the embedded database to a server based system.

BG6410-DatabaseMaintenance_PK_JS_PK_DJ_24June2020.odt is in the feedback folder.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide Chapter 7

2020-06-22 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

Uploaded the file BG6407-Linking_in_Databases_PK_DJ_21June2020.odt to
the feedback folder with two minor issues. One fixed a typo (tracked
change added) and the other about the screenshot of the data source
toolbar. One of the toolbar buttons text changed - it is explained in
a comment.

One issue however - the last part of the chapter required use of a
third party tool pdftk to extract form data from a PDF file. The pdftk
software offers binaries for Windows and RedHat/CentOS Linux only. I
tried first to install it on my Ubuntu 18.04 machine using the alien
tool to change package format from .rpm to .deb, and this did allow a
successful install but unsuccessful execution complaining about a
missing required file - I then tried to compile it from the source and
ran into a missing dependency (it appears that matches the runtime
error), as of right now I don't have a solution for that - so I'll put
that file up today as my review, with this caveat that I couldn't
actually check if that macro works with pdftk.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide ch 7 report and more

2020-04-29 Thread Dan Lewis
I have gone as far as I can go with mail merge. The only problem
that I can not solve is with Step 4 of the mail merge wizard, Create a
salutation. As long as I uncheck the box for a personal salutation, it
works fine. Otherwise I get an two lines when there should only be one:

Dear Mr. x,
Dear Mrs. x,

Hidden paragraphs do not work either. This is for LibreOffice 6.2, 6.3,
and 6.4 (6.4.3.2). There is a bug #118861 that involves this problem. I
wonder if using the Debian version has anything to do with this.

So, I have uploaded the file into the feedback folder with a comment in
that section. The Guide Status file has been updated. Someone else needs
to look through all of the recorded changes I have made to this file.

I have also downloaded chapter 8, Getting Started with Base. I
should finish this by Tuesday evening (2000UTC). I did not find any
place in the Status spreadsheet to place this information.

I found it (I think): table "Preferences" is the "Settings" table

This has to be corrected in the Guide.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] BASE GUIDE CORDINATOR

2020-04-12 Thread Pulkit Krishna
Hello Oliver,
Thank you for your message. Currently, the base guide has been translated
from its german version. I have translated all the chapters. I think now
that we will have a base guide 6.2, we english contributors can update it
for version 6.4 and further versions by ourselves. We do not need to
translate from german anymore. We can take content from german
handbauch time to time as Robert is much better than me in base but I do no
think that we should be completely dependent on only the german version of
base guide for translating into English. 4 chapters are left to be
reviewed for version 6.2. After that it would be ready to be published. Out
of those two, Dan and Drew have taken 2 for their review. Randolph, a new
volunteer, has agreed to review the left two. So I think that base guide
6.2 is going to be published soon. After that we can update it to version
6.4. There is not much to do as base has not changed much but I have
decided to add some more information to it and update all the screenshots
(the screenshots are a bit old) with the help of Rob.

Drew wanted to add content to the chapter about Access2Base. I have

I don't know anything about macros in Windows and macros in Access and

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide WiP

2020-03-23 Thread Pulkit Krishna
What is Base Guide WiP?
There is a folder by this name inside the English Folder on Nextcloud.
Inside this folder, there is a folder named Related Materials.
Inside that folder there is a document named BG70nn-SyntaxDiagrams.
The document is just a renamed chapter template with the title changed.
The version number in the file is 7.0.
We have not completed Base Guide 6.2 and not even started version 6.4. The
version 7.0 is to be released in August. Shouldn't we focus on version 6.2
and 6.4. Whoever has written this chapter should add his initials in the
file name.
The release note page of version 7.0 does not state any changes in bas,
then why are we including this new chapter in version 7.0? Does this
chapter apply to version 6.4 or 6.2? If so then we should include it in
those guides too.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide Chapter 9 Macros; Expanding section on Access2Base

2020-03-16 Thread Pulkit Krishna
Hello Everybody,
I have moved chapter 6 to published folder. I have changed some structure
in the spreadsheet. Before this there was a column called Actual Return
Date. I did not understand the use of that column. The return date of
reviews are written after the respective review by column. So there was no
need of that column. I have deleted it. I have also made two columns -
"First Draft uploaded by" and "First Draft uploaded on". The checked out by
and Expected Return Date would act as common columns for First Draft, First
Review and Second Review and the information in it can be deleted
afterwards. If anyone has any questions they can ask me. This change is
only for Base Guide 6.2.

It's a good idea. I don't know anything about Access2Base. So I have
written only that there is such an extension.

This chapter should be written by somebody who has used Access and used
macros in Access. I have never used Access, never used MSOffice, used
only StarOffice/OpenOffice/LibreOffice under Linux. So I couldn't know
what should be the reason for the extension Access2Base.

I will translate your chapter to the German Base Handbuch later.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide Chapter 9 Macros; Expanding section on Access2Base

2020-03-15 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

I grabbed the draft file for chapter 9 today and gave it a cursory read
over.

Jotted down a couple of items I would like to change.

By far the largest would be to expand the section on the Access2Base
standard basic library.

What is there now is inadequate IMO.

I would look to add a small reference section on the main function in the
library, using the access2base wiki as a source for but not a copy paste in
total.

Also would include the TTNorthWind Calc file and database (as the current
zip file from the acess2base wiki), for distribution with the other files
in the supplemental folder.

Then again use, figure it would save time, information about how that Calc
was crafted from the tutorial also found on the access2base wiki as my
template for that.

Before I start on something like though thought I'd run it by everyone
here.

Time wise, I think, after spending taking some time just now to go over the
embedded basic library in the example Calc file and if I borrow from the
wiki for text then something by Wednesday mid morning. Maybe ready for a
review, maybe not, but something.

Anyway, I'll start with that chapter by updating what is there with the new
styles, having been away for a few months remembering how to do that
properly will no doubt take me this afternoon ;-)

Otherwise on the Access2Base stuff I not do anything before tomorrow so
time then for any feedback here.

Best wishes,

Drew

Don't know where to get the chapters of the Base guide you are working
on, but the original Base Handbook and the published version for LO
5.0
contains only Linux-screenshots. There are 2 resons for this
screenshots:

- avoid to get trouble with copyrights (the German documentation team
decided to take all screenshots in a special Linux-GTK-design ...)
- no Windows system available for me, the author of the Base Handbuch.

are not many needs of screenshot replacement and I have adjusted all of the
needed ones.

Just to be clear... I thought we agreed to use Windows OS to create the
screendumps... (Dan told us to use Windows OS) The first Image in
chapter 1 does not looks like Windows at all...

So I redo all screenshots in Windows??

Thanks,

/Rob

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide Chapters 1 & 2 & 3

2020-02-28 Thread Jean Weber
The wrong date on the file and the spreadsheet was my mistake. I was not
paying attention and I thought Friday was the 29th! 

BTW, I am “she” not “he”. I know Jean is a man’s name in France and other
countries, so people often make that mistake.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide Chapters 1 & 2 & 3

2020-02-28 Thread Pulkit Krishna
Hello Jean, Dan and Rob,
I have compared chapter 1 before and after being edited by Jean. I have
accepted all the changes. I have adjusted some screenshots so that they
meet the current standard (For example on page 24, I have cropped the
figure so that it does not include the german title). I have placed the
chapter in Published folder and updated the spreadsheet.

To Jean:
I have added the name of the databases Media without macros and media with
macros to the preface. I dit not used track changes as the change was
necessary and the database name should be mentioned there.

To Dan:
Jean has commented that it would be too complicated to name the table
"Athletes". He has changed the sentences accordingly so that the readers
can understand that starters anre athletes. I agree with him.

I have adjusted the screenshots that you commented on so that they meet the
current standard (For example on page 24, I have cropped the figure so that
it does not include the german title.

To Rob:
I have adjusted the screenshots but if you want you can take the chapter
from the published, replace the screenshots and put it back there and
inform the mailing list. But I would advice you to skip chapter 1 as there
are not many needs of screenshot replacement and I have adjusted all of the
needed ones.

To Everybody:
There is a date problem. I think Jean being from Australia has added 29th
Feb to the date in the Spreadsheet but it is 28th in India (where I live)
at time of writing this mail. I think we should not use local dates and use
the Universal time.

I did not have time this week to work on the screenshots
Last week I've downloaded all drafts, so I can prepare the screenshots
coming weekend.
Next week I will (hopefully) add them to the documents. No need to wait
for me.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide Chapters 1 & 2 & 3

2020-02-27 Thread Jean Weber
Pulkit, Dan, and Rob:

I have returned Chapter 1, heavily edited, to the Feedback folder. I
left notes in it about what I did, and some questions that I could not
answer. I have updated the Status spreadsheet.

Rob, if you are doing screenshots for Chapter 2 this week, I'll skip
that chapter for now and work on Chapter 3.

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Guide Supplemental

2020-02-22 Thread Drew Jensen
Howdy,

Found a small single line typo in the macro, called from the example form,
in Example_Report_Bill.odb. Fixed it and the form now runs the report as
expected.

How would you prefer to handle this, do you want these in the feedback
folder also?

Drew
