I started learning Chinese a couple of years ago and successfully set up
Pinyin characters typing using iBus. I am running Ubuntu 16.04.

Re: [Dorset] Chromebook

2018-08-15 Thread Natalie Masse Hooper
I'm pretty sure what's app has a web app which you can pair with your
phone. A quick Google search should confirm this.

Have you checked out all the available models?
https://www.google.com/intl/en_uk/chromebook/find-yours/ You can follow
links to buy for each model, as not all shops carry them all (I know one at
least is only available at Tesco for some bizarre reason)

Re: [Dorset] Education

2018-03-20 Thread Natalie Masse Hooper
The simple answer to this question is "it's systemic". The "how to fix
this" question has had a lot of time and money thrown at by various large
tech companies in recent years, such as Google (I saw it first hand when I
worked at Google) but they have failed to far - though the fact they are
looking into it is a very important step in itself.

There are women around - when I was at British Airways, I happened to be
the lead of a 100% female Android team, but this stopped when I left (I was
replaced by a man - in fact, I hired my own successor, all 15 or so
applicants were male). In my (non statistically relevant) experience, there
are more women working as software devs in non tech companies, such as BA,
than in tech companies, whether large (ie Google) or small (ie start ups).

Re: [Dorset] Using Github as a Bug Tracker

2017-07-20 Thread Natalie Masse Hooper
At Google, I worked on a few open source projects hosted on Github, in
particular this one https://github.com/googlesamples/android-architecture
We used Github issues as a bug tracker and it was working quite well. As
you can see, we were using labels to sort the issues, we found this
necessary but we had a lot of issues coming in (as you can see, it's quite
a popular project), you may not need to do this for yours. But yes, I would
recommend using it - you can comment on an issue, close an issue etc It
does the job of bug tracking (not as powerful/flexible as paid for bug
tracking software but much simpler to use so probably much better for your
project).

He knew a bit about languages too, I don't know if due to a classical
education, and we'd often touch on some bit of etymology, or how to say
a Latin phrase. I remember one amusing evening where a polite
disagreement ensued over how and why a bit of French should be
pronounced, with Natalie. :-)

Lol! We often refer to napping as "rebooting"... because napping solves

I have the Nexus 7 and it's a great machine. You can't beat its quality
in that price range. I bought it when it came out (July) and in 6 months
of heavy use, I have not had any issue with viruses (and I have
installed a lot of apps). I do not have an anti-virus app.

Only issue I have had with it is once, the battery ran out while the
device was on and the tablet seemed unresponsive when I charged it. It
actually got charged and then booted, but the led indicating it was
charging didn't come on so I wasn't actually sure it was charging properly.

Re: viruses on Android in general, those are spreads via fake free apps,
with offers such as get X app for free sent in an email or SMS, when
said X app isn't free on Google Play and is a very popular one (very
often, a game). With basic common sense, you can avoid viruses on Android.

Yes. But I've never used it!

I think it's that. You could see if it can be disabled to find out. Or
remove it if you don't want it and/or think it could be re-installed.
Or find out how to make your particular router not watch for UDP floods.

Cheers, Ralph.

I second Ralph's suggestion, I have never seen this problem on Android
devices but I have seen it happen when Skype is installed. Also, I have
seen it with other chat apps installed. Those apps may run background
services even if you haven't started the app, depending on how they are
configured.

You can install CatLog app on your tablet (
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nolanlawson.logcat )
and have a look at the Android log, you should be able to work out which
app is causing this issue. If not, email it to me and I'll have a look.

On Ubuntu 12.04, you can set up ALT-CTRL-DEL to bring up the
gnome-system-monitor but I'm not sure it would have worked as I don't
think it overrides everything like on Windows where it often works even
when UI appears frozen. Not sure about how to set it up in Kunbuntu as
I'm not familiar with KDE, but in Ubuntu, it is simply set up in
keyboard app.

When my Ubuntu system freezes, I find that quite often ctrl-alt-F1 works
so I can then login and use sudo top, sudo ps -A and sudo kill to find
out the troubled process and kill it.

I've used TeamViewer between Linux/Windows and Linux/Mac and it works

The 2nd is a Bank Holiday, slipped from the first. Would attendees show

I'll go with the flow.

Same here, both dates are good for me so I'll go with the flow.

Yes.

Anyone else not get the reminder?

Did anyone get it? I sent it last Wednesday; a day late.

I must have missed it, I had a busy week last week so I wouldn't be
surprised if I did delete some emails too quickly... Anyway, glad to
hear it's on, will see you tomorrow then.
