This is very sad news indeed.

Weirdly enough, I don't remember that conversation Ralph is referring to!
But I do remember many conversations about languages and etymology.

Morning Terry,

He'd done a lot of programming on older small systems, in a dialect of C
if he was lucky enough to have a ported compiler, and plenty of assembly
languages, and was always interested to discuss the minutiae of
anything, from instruction sets upwards. Even when it was more effort
for him to talk in recent months, I'd be telling him about some new
development or interesting artefact that I'd looked out between meetings
and he'd make the effort to explain connections with his earlier
experience.

He knew a bit about languages too, I don't know if due to a classical
education, and we'd often touch on some bit of etymology, or how to say
a Latin phrase. I remember one amusing evening where a polite
disagreement ensued over how and why a bit of French should be
pronounced, with Natalie. :-)

Cheers, Ralph.
