Thanks for finding out about that.

Robert, do you know what the deal is with BUNIX getting a room at the
Uni, and what facilities are on offer? Could DLUG do similar, even if
for the odd daytime weekend meet as public transport during the evening
is lacking?

Re: [Dorset] Possible Bournemouth Meeting place

2010-11-08 Thread Natalie Hooper
It's a no-goer for a simple reason: buses don't always show up when they
should, therefore I would NEVER rely on one timetabled bus and one only.
Yes, if it doesn't turn up, I could take a cab but that would make for an
evening far too expensive.

It's all good for people not catching the bus saying there is a bus at
22.15, what are you complaining about?. Would you like to go somewhere
outside of town knowing there is only one bus to come back so if you miss it
or it doesn't turn up, you're stuck? While it may be technically possible to
do it, I wouldn't want to try it, that wouldn't make for a relaxing evening.
This is why it's a no goer. When we had that discussion a few weeks ago
(before last Bournemouth's meet), the same point was made and folks agreed
that it wasn't a reliable public transport option.

It's a shame as I'd like to go to Wimborne actually (never been there) but
until public transport improves, it will have to be a day trip to Wimborne
for me, not an evening trip.

  Hi Natalie

Why do you say 'a no goer'? OK, so you leave at 22.15 and catch the bus
virtually outside. Yes you'll get into B'mouth around 23.15, late, agreed,
but I've got home after that time from some of the meetings both in B'mouth
and Dorchester (and that's by car!).
How late would you want to leave any meeting, because that would determine
how far out we can go?

I'm about half an hour walk to the Uni so buses aren't a problem for me, I
can walk it, but looking at the bus timetables, the last U1 back to
Bournemouth is at 22.10 (half an hour service until then) and the last U2
back to Poole is also at 22.10 so probably too early?
http://www.thebusforbu.co.uk/pdf/u1tt_vacation.pdf
http://www.thebusforbu.co.uk/pdf/u2tt.pdf

There is also an hourly service from (yellow bus) No 6, with the last one at
22.48 http://www.bybus.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/r62.pdf

There are more options than Wimborne as there are buses from 2 companies,
but to answer the question originally asked by Ralph, no, there aren't
frequent busses late into the evening.

In terms of timings, the best evening buses in the area are No 3 and No 5
(both yellow buses), which both run every 15 minutes (until midnight for No
3 and 11.30 for No 5 - but note that the No 5 splits into 2 routes, 5a and
5b, so stops after Winton are served less frequently). Incidentally, The
Broadway pub we met in last time is on the No 3 route, hence it being a
great location for public transport users.

Reply to your post set out below. I have a contact there as well, but maybe
Peter is better placed to know the right venue to get.

I guess it would be possible to have a mini-like DLUG Unconference in an
evening. I know someone in BCS Dorset who is also involved with the BCS Young
professional group who might also be interested in such a thing. However
depends on the view of others in the DLUG.

Which raises the question I keep asking myself -- do the meetings all
need to be in the evening? I realize I'm dangerously close to reopening
an old discussion that never goes anywhere, but would there be any
interest in a daytime meet, weekend or weekday? Perhaps an
unconference, or lab session, or anything else? The evening pub meet is
a good format, but if we have another type of venue available we could
consider varying other parameters too occasionally.

No. That's the new location of Wimborne Cricket Club in the town. Try:

I'd say that as nice a place as Wimborne is that there would be little point
meeting there if most people live in Bournemouth/Poole on this side of the
County of Dorset.

Maybe also wherever the meeting is that where possible an attempt might be made
for several attendees to make use of one car rather than one (each attendee )
to many (cars).
