I store my email and ftp settings locally as well, but is the software that I use likely to be readily exploitable in order to obtain my information? Further, since Google has indexed this information already, will someone that wants access to it only have to drop into my DQSD and type ggd password to see where all the passwords are stored (and previews of each)? Worse even, how does the Google.com integration work? Is it 'before' the content hits my browser, or after - via script, BHO or somesuch locally? In each case, if the system has spyware of any sort then the Google Desktop extends the capacity for exploitation since it gives advanced access to priviledged content from valuable files across my system. Google also has an interesting response to this FAQ: 7. Does Google collect information about me? Google Desktop Search will not send any personally identifying information, such as your name or address, to Google without your explicit permission. Could not determine key. The same in IE :-( This would happen only if the key did not exist in the Google Search page. Sorry to ask: 1) Are you sure you have Google Desktop installed and running? 2) Did you disable the 'Google Integration' option in Google Desktop to 'Show Desktop Search results on Google Web Search result pages'? It won't work, of course, if it's not installed. The detection method (though NOT the search) also requires the 'Google Integration' to be enabled. After determining your Google Desktop Key and setting the DQSD variable to that effect, you no longer need to have the Google Integration option enabled. Regards, Shawn K. Google desktop indexes the DQSD history.txt file so if you want to 'search for a search' to speak you can now Google for it. At the top of the list I would add Thunderbird... fantastic mail client. Okay, here's another version of the ggd search, and this one does a
lot of the stuff automagically. If you do not have the localprefs

Hi Steve, ...I'm not with you on this F8 thing. Could you clarify where F8 gets pressed. Sure. Use the following DQSD searches (just to 'seed' it so I can make sure you have something to test it with). After each search just close the google window that opens. The searches are intended only to demonstrate the use of F8 later. freeware dqsd free dqsd free software free ftp software free xml software free xml sourcecode No make sure the google windows are all closed. Now drop to DQSD and type (without the quotes): soft With only those four letters typed press F8. It should change the content of DQSD to free xml software. If you press F8 again it should cycle to free software. Likewise, if you change the text to ware and F8 through the history you should hit free xml software, free ftp software, free software, then freeware dqsd - if you've ever used the four letter 'ware' in anything else you should also see those after the ones listed here. When it gets to the 'end' of the listing it'll start cycling through the list again. This can, at times, be a VERY large list - try typing only 'c' and press F8 to see just how long it can get (assuming you use it to hit regular domains, too, this should be a pretty long list). Try it with 'free' or 'source' and you'll see how it works. Another spiffy feature is domain assertion. Like in IE, you can also type in a 'root domain' (like msn or yahoo) and press CTRL+ENTER to have it automagically add http:/www. and .com - I use this all the time without even thinking about it. People think I'm a really fast typist, but it's just that I know all the keyboard shortcuts to avoid typing everything out completely. ;) Regards, Shawn K. I don't know how to check if I have msxml installed, I read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278674#kb2 and downloaded xmlversion.exe but It didn't tell me anything I understood! In windows\system (XP home SP1) I have msxml.dll, msxml2.dll, msxml2r.dll, msxml3.dll, msxml3r.dll. But then I reread you mail and opened it in IE! The page opens with the message : Failure! -2146828218 :: Permission denied. I did not understand Method 2. I copied the soucre for http://www.google.com/search?q=dqsd in there but was not sure what to do with that...what happens once you drop the source in? After 10 seconds or so in IE the message Failure! Could not determine key come up underneath it :-( I downloaded the script and when I opened the ggd-discover.html page in firefox it came up with a Javacript error Failure! undefined::undefined. Trying it in IE (firewall turned off) added the text : Add the following line to your LocalPrefs.js file: ggd_googleKey = 'undefined'; to the page. Thanks for all the efforts. I've incorporated a method for 'discovering' the users google desktop key automagically When I try ggd /discover I get back Key: undefinedhmmm, wondering if sygate firewall is the cause but I get no warning from it Still contemplating features vs invasiveness. Thanks! ;) When I try ggd /discover I get back Key: undefinedhmmm, wondering if sygate firewall is the cause but I get no warning from it Well, since I didn't actually *try* it on a system that doesn't have Google Desktop installed it's hard to debug that part. :( My guess is that either you were not online or DQSD was prevented from accessing the Internet to determine the key (by your firewall or something). What it does to get the key is 'google' for the term DQSD then parse the results to determine the key within the html code Google sends back. Kinda like how the RSSX and Comix searches work. Since it became apparent that this search posed a problem for people
to install, I've incorporated a method for 'discovering' the users
google desktop key automagically and provided the ability to set it
directly within your local prefs (so you don't need to 'discover' it
again every day).
I've attached the changed version. If you hit it as ggd ? it'll
tell you how to use the discover switch to find out what the local
google desktop key is.
On a completely unrelated note; I only installed Google Desktop to
play with since you mentioned that you needed a DQSD search for it.
Otherwise I probably never would have bothered with it. I haven't
decided yet if it's something I really care about. It's interesting
that I can now google (via DQSD, of course) normally and see what
results are related to my search in my Outlook, Windows Explorer and
IE history (it reads script and source-code files locally, too, so
it DOES help), and the Outlook part, at least, is very useful. But
I'm still not convinced that it's something I am willing to give up
my privacy for (read the google terms of service to see how they DO
track your usage of the Google Desktop).
Still contemplating features vs invasiveness. If it continues to
provide the effectiveness it has for searching my Outlook messages
and my 'webs' (currently developing 54 websites!) and programming
source code, this is going to be a rather difficult decision.
