Re: [Drakelist] Possible problem with T-4XC xmtr
Howard, Hmmm. Give the loud pop and subsequent drop of output power, I'm wondering if you had a brief internal arc within one of your final tubes. A violent arc that involves the cathode could easily destroy a region of the cathode coating and thus reduce peak emission, yet allow the tube to continue to operate. But maybe you lost one of the tubes completely? Is your resting plate current normal? Heard a very loud POP came from somewhere behind the front panel. No smell of smoke or oazone. Never tune for more than 4 or 5 seconds at a time and never off-resonance more than 1 or 2 seconds. Before this incident, the xmtr tuned up to 120 to 140 watts (according to my TW-1 talking watt meter); after, it now peaks at about 80W. I had a QSO afterwords, so I know it's working some. Antenna match is about 1.3/1. Do you think I did something real bad or maybe it's just a tube or a plate choke or something? Where should I start to diagnose? One of the options is to disable (turn off) email delivery, also known as vacation mode. That way you can read the postings on line without getting any emails, but still be able to post. Considering that you have to sign up and be approved to post, this can reduce the time and effort if you have a question and need an answer. You could also chose digest mode, where you get one email a day. On busy days you can just delete it, on slow days, take a look at it. A friend of mine calls it New York mode, because you can shout without listening. :-) Geoff. -- geoffrey mendelson N3OWJ/4X1GM Jerusalem Israel geoffreymendel...@gmail.com New word I coined 12/13/09, Sub-Wikipedia adj, describing knowledge or understanding, as in he has a sub-wikipedia understanding of the situation. i.e possessing less facts or information than can be found in the Wikipedia. ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist

[Drakelist] Two questions...TR7 related
Hello to the group, Can anyone with some certainty advise what the coax cable part number is between boards on a TR7. It appears to be RG174 with a 26 gauge solid core. All replacements found have been 24 gauge...won't work has to plug into those little holes. In addition the source winds up shipping strandedguess they don't understand solid. BTW I'd like to strangle the guy that soldered the shield can for the Up Converter board to U401's can in three spots...hope I didn't fry it out. Second questionfront panel Fixed area RCV button. anybody know what page it is shown on, wired to. Per the operators manual the function appears to be only if you have an AUX 7 board installed. But it is doing some magical things... Thanks in advance, 73Carl WD8NHK ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
[Drakelist] T-4X Sidetone on Spot
I have a T-4X paired with an R-4. In separate, I hear sidetone with the T-4X in Spot. Previous suggestion was that the electrolytic was leaky, so I replaced it with one from Hayseed. The sidetone is still audible in spot. Does this sound like a switch problem? Notice that the sidetone seems a little high pitched for my taste, but seem to recall that Drake used 1 kHz. Also, the sidetone volume seems weak even with the sidetone/anti Vox full clockwise. Weak mic amp/sidetone oscillator? Carl, The switch connections are shown on the Chassis and Parent Board Schematic, page 2-5 of the service manual. I suspect the magical things are the synthesizer VCO free-running when the switch is depressed because there is no PTO signal or fixed crystal signal in TX or RX, depending on which switch.
