[Drakelist] T 4 XC Help?

2012-12-12 Thread Bill skidmore
Can someone help me? I am attempting to to repair a T4XC which has been
owner repaired before, but which has been working properly on all bands.

I can not find a couple of things I see on the schematic. And I see
something else I can not account for.

I would like someone to tell me what component(s) are supposed to be
connected to the following band switch lugs:

1. On the band switch wafer between the right angle drive and
the chassis partition rearward of the right angle drive, with the
transmitter inverted, looking into the rig from above, the solder lug
closest to the observer, and nearest the bolt holding the switch wafer to
the chassis partition--- what is supposed to be connected to this lug, and
where does the other end of this component go?

2. On the same band switch wafer, rotating inward about 90 degrees from the
above lug, there are no solder lugs. The first lug you come to after this
space--- what component(s) are supposed to connect here, and where do they
go in the transmitter?

Believe me, I am not as crazy as this sounds!

Thanks to one and all,

[Drakelist] t-4xc HELP!!!

2012-12-12 Thread Paolo Emanuelli IK1QHB
HI folks

I've in the shack now a wonderful T-4XC totally restored...by me.
After a week of work on the chassis all seems to be ok ...there's only a
problem on 15m band.
On every band the power is ok (150w on 80m since 120w in 10m) but on 15 meter
not more than 85w on separate, 50w on rcvr and 65 on xmtr mode...
The band switch is ok after a hard work and a bit of patience!
I'm waiting for a deoxit d100 from USA, but i'm not sure the problem is on the
band switch or on the transceive switch... it could be some other problem of RF
tune stage?
On other band i was able to obtain same power both separate and rcvr/xmtr...
(never been before restoration of the bands witch).
Can somebody help me to obtain full power also on 15m band?

Many thanks

Paul IK1QHB

Re: [Drakelist] Drakelist Digest, Vol 54, Issue 10 TR 3

2012-12-12 Thread David Assaf III
Incidentially and as you may wish, there is an old circuit that is simple
and effective to add CW break in for a tr3. Did it 3 times and worked very
well. I beleive it is an old article in CQ mag.

The comment about the sideband filter in the TR 3 is not to be passed over
lightly. If you have a problem there, you are in deep trouble. I carefully
took the surrounding shield off my problem filter and repaired it, then put
it together again. I was lucky I didn't break something.

All the other comments, concerning historic equipment, TR 3 as a poor CW
 rig, etc, are spot on.
Buy it anyway! These things keep us from going brain dead using multi-band
 CB equipment.

 Hi,
The deal killer in the TR-3 is the SB filter. They often go
 bad on
one sideband, still get some thru, but way low. Check output on 20m and
on 15m, they should be close, and above 125 watts out. Actual value
could be more (hopefully), but will depend upon alignment. Normally 15m
output will be a little less than on 20m, but not more than say 20 watts
less, if the final tubes are reasonably good. You should be able to
load up to about the same plate current on both bands.
Other than that possible problem, the TR-3 can be a good rig for
 SSB
operation, usually at a good price, also. S-meter often seems stingy,
just turn up the AF gain if needed, signals are there. Definitely check
out the p.s. and replace the bias filter cap at least.

Hi Guys ; Considering a fully functional TR-3 from the owner of 15yrs.
I've been invited to try it on the air at his shack before I take it.
Being a relative newbie to Drake equipment, is there any particular
areas to consider with the TR3 other than the obvious and general
  operating condition?
I don't recall anything negative in particular about this vintage
radio. I will upgrade the power supply and finals..Anything come to
 mind?
   Thanks 73 de n8aft.

For one, it's a terrible CW radio...if that matters to you.
