[Drakelist] T4XC drive
Last night, my T4XC was providing full output on cw regardless of where the drive control was set -- even all the way CCW. Normally, on cw you have to advance it beyond 12 o'clock for full drive. I checked and double checked all switch settings, etc. Any suggestions? Thanks Rick W0RT___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
[Drakelist] downtime
I echo all that has been said. The list is invaluable. With the help of the list and some list members (especially Gary) I have completed some fairly difficult repairs on two T4XC's and have followed the advice to upgrade the AC-4's. I am enjoying my Drakes and the interplay on the list. I also have a folder I keep goodies in. Don and John, I couldn't go either and would love to. I'm sure there are a few more of us. I have some difficulty being on my feet for a long time but still would love to make it one year. [Drakelist] blown resistors
In checking and cleaning my T4XC, I noticed that R53 and 54, the 15 ohm 1 watt resistors in the cathode circuit are both blown in half. [Drakelist] Drake QSO
I had just finished going through my C-line and cleaning everything including switches and buttoning it back up. I set it up in my operating position and after warm up put out a CQ on 80 cw. W0CCA, in western CO came back and we had a long rag chew. Cap was running his Drake B line. What a pleasant coincidence. Couldn't have planned it better. [Drakelist] R4C function switch, feet
The detents on the function switch on my R4C have worn out. At least they do not stop the switch at the functions. (except for the first one) I have reviewed the archives on the subject. Before attempting the silver solder repair, does anyone have a function switch they would part with. I also would like to purchase the rubber pads for the feet. Who was it that had those? Re: [drakelist] Antenna question
For years I have used a trapped inverted Vee using Reyco 40M traps and a W2AU balun. Works great on 80M and 40M and will work other bands with a tuner. A good antenna. Also, no matter what they say, The G5RV at 102 feet long is a fine performer on 80, 40 and 20 for sure. Do not sell it short. I use one at 30' with a DX-60B and Drake R4A (mostly on 40 CW) and get consistently great reports. For those who don't know the model, it's a high accuracy (output level -107dbm +/-1db) 80/40/20 meter RF generator. I've used it in the past to determine the Minimum Discernable Signal or noise floor of a reciever. Here are some of the past results I've gotten: Elecraft K2 #4913 -143dbm Kenwood TS-850SAT -136dbm Yaesu FT-920 -137dbm Now to the good stuff - my recently aquired TR4: 20m: -147dbm 40m: -152dbm 80m: -151dbm To measure this I injected the generator's -107dbm (1 microvolt) signal and measured it's peak then measured the noise next to the carrier and did a little math. I also measured the same spot with the generator on and off. My numbers might be off because I could not turn off my AGC but to correct for this I made measurements at many differant RCVR GAIN settings on the TR-4 and averaged them out. I found that with the gain set to anything less than 11 o'clock, there was no AGC action. I used Rocky, a SDR program that shows the spectrum around a signal like a pan adapter. I also ran the tests witn Spectrogram, a spectrum analyzer and got very close to the same numbers. Another impression is by my ears - the -107dbm signal seemed to be easiest to pick out of the noise on the TR4 than the other rigs. BTW the 50 microvolt setting produced a S9 signal on all three bands. The main reason I wanted to test the MDS of my TR4 is the fact that the reciever is so quiet that I got the impression that it was deaf or broken. Deaf? NOT! I've only been a Drake owner for 5 days but I'm quickly becoming a fan! 73's de Ken KG0WX - Kadiddlehopper #11808, Flying Pigs #-1055, Grid EM17io -- Get news, entertainment and everything you care about at Live.com.
