 Drakelist de PA2DW,

Let me share a curious fault in my L75 with you, maybe it helps others. The
problem started with random 100-200 mA platecurrent in standby position and
a negative gridcurrent. I knew to look for the bias voltage, which turned to
be 0,7 Volt instead of 75 during bad moments.

In the end it appeared that one of the ceramic capacitors that go from the
filament to ground (on the cold end of the big choke) had an internal
flashover. It even made a small hole in the cap, so that I could look
 through it hi!

After exchanging them, the amp worked fine again.

 Best regards, Dick PA2DW

Conventional wisdom is that Lee #172 Lagoon Blue theatrical gel is a very
close match. A few bucks for a sheet at a theater supply house or on eBay will
net you a lifetime supply. Dave, KD2E, has provided information to the effect
that Roscolene #853 is the ORIGINAL Drake filter material. You can see both

Welcome home Howard. Sounds like (pardon the pun) bad filter caps in your

 fix.

I have just put myself on the air after a 15 year absence, I am using the
Drake TR-4 that I had in Colorado 15 years ago. It was perfect then.
However, I just worked the November SS Contest and got 3 or 4 contacts who
 said
 that I had a hum.
I am not very technical (and at 74 yo not sure I will ever be!!)
Anyone have an idea what could cause the hum?

Be sure the electrolytics are fully discharged before you touch
anything inside. They can retain a high enough charge to give you
a serious jolt. In a lot of power supplies, the electrolytics have
a bleeder resistor across them, to drain down that charge within
a minute or so after the unit is turned off. But you're working in
old equipment where things may have been modified and/or broken.

A few years ago I bought an old transmitter with separate power
supply at a hamfest. The seller assured me it was all in working
condition. I think I would have been killed if I'd relied on that
bit of puffery. But W1ES is right -- they're pretty
straightforward, and you shouldn't have any trouble figuring out
what's what or working on it. Just be sure to respect the voltages
that it's capable of.

Wow, thank you so much to all for the most useful information. Yes
the AC4 is wired for 240 v.

Hoped to string up some sort of temporary antenna this weekend and
get on the air but I now know I will be busy doing something else!
Just hope I have the technical abilty to sort it out. Years ago I
built a Heathkit scope but that is about my only experience with
components, soldering etc.

I do not suppose any Drake enthusiast will have any doubt as to why
a TR4 but in case anybody has, in the late 60's and early 70's when
I was active I had three receivers in a row, the last being a R4A.
I thought it was magnificent and way ahead of any receiver I had
tried at the time. Wish I still had it today. It is only natural
that I want to return to Drake.

Thanks again everyone.

Hello all, I am embarrassed but most grateful for all the kindness
and helpful advice given to me. Too many to thank individually but
many many thanks to all. The safety advice is taken very seriously
and I will be ultra cautious bearing in mind my inexperience.
Already I am puzzled. Astonished in fact. A most careful
examination of every component in the AC4 and then the TR4,
magnifying glass and high power flashlight and what a lot under the
TR4, shows no sign of distress to any component!! Clearly the bang
came from somewhere, I was not dreaming, so I guess it is time to
carefully take some voltage measurements from the AC4 as a first
step. DamienG3XER

Hey Damien,

Welcome back to radio (you even had a few fireworks too). Yup that's
what a cap sounds like when it goes. Remember, it's probably 40
years old and engineered for 25. Easy fix though. Re-build the
whole supply while your in there. You more than likely lost a couple
diodes in the process too (1N4007 is a newer, heavier
replacement...cost about 10-15 cents apiece). Simple complete kits
are available, and reasonably priced

Hi all, Bought an immaculate looking TR4 which has been out of use
a long time. Also bought an AC4 which claims to have had the
original EHT caps and diodes replaced. Powered them up with 20 vac
for four hours, then up in 20 v steps at four hours per step,
listening and sniffing for any problems. Reached 220 vac an hour
ago. AC4 slightly warm and centre of TR4 top a bit warmer. Then
there was one hell of a crack! Sounded like a gunshot and
frightened me to death! Swiched off immediately of course. No
smell that I can detect. Is that what an exploding capacitor sounds
like? Any advice on where to start looking? The TR4 or the AC4?
Sad day for me. Trying to return to the hobby after over 30
years. Been too busy making a living and bringing up a family.
Regards, DamienG3XER

Is it possible power supply was set for 110V not 220V? I do not
believe it's
the TR4-although of course it could be. If it was, I should think
you would
have lost a diode(s) or Heaven-forbid: the transformer. It could
have been a
faulty diode that caused it-hence, after making sure about the
input voltage

selector (and if it's correct, I'd check its wiring) I'd check all the
diodes.

Finally, it's always possible it was just the capacitor's time
having come.
If you've made sure about the voltage setting, then replace the
cap, do the
same start-up routine, and then the SAME cap goes, then yeah, it's
obviously

not the caps, but something else going on.

Before you walk-away for the run-time test, I'd check all the
voltages just
to be sure they're right. That way, if it does go again (or some
other cap)

you'll know at least it LOOKED right prior to catastrophe.

Hey Evan,

Great to hear from you. Hope everything is FB. I cleaned the gain
pot last time I was in the amp and replaced the 5K 7 watt'er (just
cuz) when I re-built the supply. The whole ALC set-up has never
really worked very well, but haven't had anything to compare it to
either, other than my 1000MP MK V, which isn't a fair comparison.
Other than a parts unit is that pot and switch available anywhere?

taper has opened or developed a weak spot that is circumvented by
the wiper crossing that area. Just not sure about this one.

What do you mean by doesn't work? My T-4XC with the L4B is pretty

drops the pwr output big time. Almost makes me think the pot isn't

I have 173 crystals for the R4C radio. All but 6 or 7 crystals
had drifted over 5 khz. The rest had drifted 2,3 or 4 khz. No dead
crystals. I no longer have any Drake equipment sorry to say. Rather
than sell these crystals off piece by piece I would take offers on

Just curious (in your opinion perhaps)was Drake purchased as an
investment by B-T or just to get the name and get
them out of the competitive way?? Maybe this is the way of
business, but it would seem a bit expensive to buy them out
just to put them out of business??

So I suppose my theory that Drake would buy out Palstar (located
just up the road in Piqua, Ohio) and make a triumphant
return to the amateur radio market.

Yes I know, dream on. Sorry to see the demise of Drake. Wonder
what Bob Drake would say about this turn of events??!?

Thanks Bill for the bits of Drake history that you have shared with

Marc - I just rebuilt the L-7PS with a Harbach board (and a L-4PS
with the Heathkit Shop board)Both boards show 2700 volts on the
amp meters after putting them into operation.

Did you do a low-voltage test before installing? I applied a 20VAC
voltage to the input and got ~50VDC at the outputs verifying the
voltage doubler function.

You may want to give that a trysounds like a part reversal
during install.

[Drakelist] L4 rebuild

2012-02-19 Thread richard radke

Dino,

I had a bleeder go several years ago when the glitch resistor blew
with a BANG! I could only tell by a hairline crack in the body
(can't remember if I did a resistance ck 1st or not). Took it out
and it promptly fell apart. Did a rebuild with one of Mike's board
and replaced both bleeders. Other than a tube flash-over it's been
working well

I finally bit the bullet yesterday and got around to rebuilding my
L-4BPS and L7PS supplies, one with a Heathkit Shop board and the
other with the Harbach version. Both procedures went well, with
the second going a LOT faster than the first! I will be rebuilding
a friend's L-4BPS next week and figured I could minimize the time
to do his by working out the bugs doing mine.

As my L-4B is my main amp, and based on Evan's note to me a few
years ago, I went ahead and changed out the 5K 7W resistor with the
13W version, replaced the 0.82 ohm HV line resistor and the 50K 50W
bleeders as a precautionary measure. In the other amp I guess I
was just lazy and simply installed only the Harbach board.

Now sitting here thinking about it should I go back and just get it
over with and replace the resistors in the L7PS? Has anyone ever
had a bleeder go bad? Or the others for that matter. Sure, age
will wear anything down.

Also, the Harbach board doesn't include the diode balancing
resistors that Mike's board does...as the original Drake diode
strings used 'em what exactly is the difference? Do modern (read
that better) diodes still need that protection? I'm just curious.

I was pretty impressed that my 32 year old L-4BPS kept going like
the Energizer Bunny all these years and I didn't notice any
deterioration at all on the bodies of the orange
electrolyticsbut, better safe than sorry and I'm looking
forward to many more years of reliable operation with both amps.

Thoughts?

I've used a Heil HC-4 element through a Hi-Z xmformer for years.
Heil sells (or used to) the raw element and transformer individually.
I mounted them in a very nice black anodized dynamic mic from RS.
Dosen't sound quite as good as my Shure 545S, but has a little more

to do his by working out the bugs doing mine.

Thoughts?

John, I believe you can get high-Z elements from Heil, if you want
to keep the old 444.

I use a stone-stock, no preamp D-104 and get excellent reports.

[Drakelist] L4B oddity

2012-01-03 Thread richard radke

All,

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions. Solder on the pins all look
ok. .5Ω's on each filament. I'm guessing a grid to filament short/
leak when it gets hot. I did notice a slight bit of clouding near
the top of the envelope that wasn't there before. Maybe from running
the filament with way less than 5V. Thoughts ? At any rate, a
replacement 3-400Z is gonna be hard to find (out of production for
years) so I'll probably just get a new 3-500 to go with the one I
already have.

[Drakelist] L4B Oddity

2012-01-02 Thread richard radke
I have an unusual situation underway in my L4B. Evan, you out
there? Been working fine until yesterday (i know, well happy new
year) one of the 3-400's filaments is half as bright as the other. I
reversed the tubes and the same tube was dimmer in the opposite
hole, and the amp and supply seems like they're running hotter
than normal. HV is normal, but haven't keyed it yet or applied
drive. Pwr supply was rebuilt a couple years ago with one of Mike's
boards. Has anyone seen a tube fail like this? Being a week after
xmas and the YL's birthday Friday, not real anxious to spend 5 big
ones on a pair of 3-500's right now, but a guys gotta do what a guys
gotta do.

2nd question. I've got one 3-500 spare that I believe to be good. Has
anyone ever mixed a 3-400 and a 3-500 in the same amp? Only for
testing purposes. Just asking.

Ron,

Yes, there are two SSB nets devoted to Drake enthusiasts.

One is the Drake Technical Net. It meets Sunday afternoon at 2000
hours Zulu, which is 4 pm Eastern time this season of the year. It
meets on 7238.

The other one is the Drake and Antique Tube Gear Net. It used to
meet on 3865 but due to the foreign broadcast/noise we shifted the
frequency to 3868 for the past several years. That frequency has
since become occupied and the stations there may or may not refer
check-ins to the frequency being used since we don't know which
frequencies are free to use each week. Hence, there is no longer
any firm frequency to find the net. It does meet on Tuesday
evenings, at 8 pm Eastern time. It might be a little later
depending on how long it takes to find an available frequency.
Best to try tuning around +/- from 3868 and see where the net might
be operating.

Feel free to join the nets. All Drake enthusiasts are welcome.
And don't forget the Drake Forum at the Dayton Hamvention,
Saturday, 1030-1130, Room 2.

73,

Evan, K9SQG

Lee,

You might want to consider pulling the feed thru caps from the RF
deck while your doing your up-grades. Yours are more than likely 30+
years old and any drop-in replacements (if you can find 'em) probably
are too. Been there a couple of times in the last several years. I
think it was Garey that suggested just running the filament xfmr
directly to the choke with by-pass caps to ground. The amp has been
working great and running cool ever since, and I haven't had to hunt
for NOS caps.

Does anyone on this list know what I can use that will fit the

I also agree with Ron on this one. The 3-500's work best with 100

seems counterintuitive. Try and find a way to get 220 in to the

I really didn't want to go into all the gory details Jim, but since
you

asked

I was listening to the Maritime Mobile Service net on 20 meters on
my TR-4,
great receive audio, while my Collins S Line and 30S-1 were warming
up for
the Collins Collectors Net also on 20 meters, but using a different
antenna.
I left the radio room for about an hour or so and when I came back
in net
control for the CCA net was calling for Rocky Mountain area
stations to
check in. I forgot that the TR-4 was still on (couldn't hear the
NCS anymore
and didn't even look in that direction), and pushed the high
voltage button
on the 30S-1 and started transmitting. Halfway through my
transmission I

heard a pop and then smelled smoke. The first thing I thought was that
something in the 30S-1 blew, but I was still putting out between
800 and
1000 watts. I turned around and saw that the TR-4 was still on and
connected
to it's antenna (its on the other end of the console) and I said @#$
%!!! It
was hard to tell at first where the burning smell was coming from
because
the TR-4 is mounted in the console and the fans were dumping the
smoke into
the room, but when I pulled the panel cover off of the console
there was no

doubt what had happened.

Interestingly, the MN-4 attached to the TR-4 suffered no damage. It
must

have passed the RF right through to the radio.

So the moral of the story is; don't get old and forgetful, and
always check
that all the other radios in the station are shut off and antenna
switches

are grounded before transmitting, especially when using an amplifier!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

:-(

2010-05-10 Thread Richard Radke

Adrian,

What kind of Y connector are you using at the jack on the R4C?
I've found the common 3 inch pig-tail Y adapter loads down the PTO on
10 and 15, giving odd readings.
Try using a compact one piece unit (a tight fit), but should solve
the problem. Also make sure the contacts on the T4XC bandswitch are
clean (be gentle..it doesn't take much). If they're dirty, your
readings will be all over the map. You'll find the preselector
setting on 15 and 10 are pretty critical for accurate operation. If
your not right on the last 2 digits won't settle down.

[Drakelist] C-line vs TR-7

2010-03-09 Thread Richard Radke
I agree with Lee. Worked the DX contest with the C-Line and L4B last
weekend. Worked everything I could hear (even the 100 watt weak
ones),1st or 2nd call. Lots of smiles. The band-pass and notch are
a superb contest combo. What more could you want?

The R4C beats my Icom every time.

[Drakelist] Digital Readout

2010-02-25 Thread Richard Radke

Jack,

I've used the Almost All Digital DFD103 display on my C-line for
about 10 years now. Looks and works great. It does load the
oscillator a bit on 10 meters, but a tweak of the 10 meter trimmer
takes care of it. Other than that, plug-and-play after calibration.

[Drakelist] L4B Problem

2009-10-27 Thread Richard Radke

All,

Evan hit it right on the head. Didn't get a chance to dig into the
amp until tonight (work kept getting in the way). A cold solder
joint between the rf choke and the filament bus.
I removed the choke when I installed the new feed-thru caps to give
myself a little more room to work. I guess I didn't apply enough
heat when I re-installed it. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it
did, for how loose it was. Anyway, tubes are lookin' good . Thanks
to all the suggestions.

[Drakelist] L4B Question

2009-10-25 Thread Richard Radke

All,

I was working the CQ WW DX Friday night (C line and L4B) on 40,
picking up a couple new ones, cndx here were just so,so. All was
well, shut down. Resumed Saturday morning,
20 sounded in great shape. Tuned up the twins on the new band,
kicked in the L4B, and nothing. Amp turns on, no smoke, meters
light, but tubes are dead. HV present (1900 and 2600 volts).

I installed Mike's upgrade kit 2 years ago, with new bleeders, in-
rush protection, and additional cooling. I replaced the feed-thru
caps last year because of a gird current issue. It's been working
well, putting out about 1300 watts into a dummy load.

My question is. What are the chances of both tubes going at the same
time? In looking at the schematic, the panel lights are on the same
side of the filament xfmr as the tubes. Assuming if the panel lights
light, I've got voltage out of the xfmr. One or both of the feed-
thru caps or filament choke? Those are pretty robust components,
rated at 20 amps (if I remember right) and very hard to find and get
out. I can probably build the choke if needed.

Any thoughts on what to be looking for before I dive in?

Brian,

I've done Mike's (The Heathkit Shop) rebuild. 1st rate, clear

bleeders and the bias resistor. Jeff at Harbach has those
available. I'd do those also.

try to rebuild the existing boards (I think I have most of the
parts to do it) should I just go ahead and get one of the
replacement/upgrade single boards? Along those lines can anyone
suggest either the board from The Heathkit Shop or Harbach?

Since the power supply has already been partially dismantled is
there anything I need to watch out for when rebuilding it (either
with the existing boards or the upgrade board)?

Lastly... does anyone know what kind of screws were used on the

The best way would be with Adobe Photoshop, starting with a

three pages that have to be spliced.

Is there a software program that can stitch those pages back
together to print an 11 by 17 for example. How about Adobe Acrobat?
I have been trying to find out on their website but wading through

Dick,
Standard practice is thumb for dots. But who cares. Whatever is most
comfortable for you. I do it the opposite (couldn't unlearn after
using a bug) and sleep well. Hendrix strung his guitar opposite too
and did ok.

I'm new to reading Tube schematics - where should
I tap to sample the 9mhz IF signal? My guess is the
junction of R58/59. The tap would go through a .01
microfarad cap for isolation. After that, I feed a small
sheilded cable through the chassis and out the back
going past the carrier balance pot.

Like I said, I'm new at this - any hints/suggestions

The 30500 is a TR-4 schematic. I have a 32001 that is also a TR-4,
and the first TR-4C I have is 35161. I have eleven (11) versions
so far, but there is still one that has eluded me. It appears to
be the ONE, i.e., the first TR-4C. I have a TR-4C schematic, but
the number is VERY blurred, and while I'm pretty sure the date is
3/24/73, the s/n looks to be 34141 but is iffy at best. The rest
of the drawing is quite clear, almost as if Drake blurred it on
purpose!! :-)

Bill Frost only had two TR-4 schematics in the company file, so
I'm ahead of the game.

Yeah, I'm still working on a CD. It's been a real pain. Several
of the boards are unphotographable in situ, so it's going to take
some disassembly. I may wish I never started this one and did the
2-C instead! :-)

Actually, the correct schematic for yours would be 35161.

Thanks for checking!

br

Hello Drake pals :br

br

I'm relatively new to Drake gear and would appreciate any advice regarding the
following problem...br

br

I have an R4C / T4XC combo. With everything tuned properly , my T4Xc
transmitter delivers approx 130 watts stable power output on 75 mtrs when
operated separate from the receiver.br

 br

However, when I go to transceive using the R4C controlling of the VFO ,
the output power is only 100 watts and the power output steadily drops.  Could
this be a problem with the osc injection wire jumper going from the receiver to
the transmitter ? Would appreciate any advice from the Drake experts .  br

br

Thank youbr

out...Been using a C line for years, but don't have too much experience
with the xcvrs

The rcvr section works great...Good sensitivity on all bands...But no
output..Zero...Replaced the driver and de-oxited things...Can hear good
quality audio and cw on a nearby rcvr...Haven't switched out the finals
yet...I figured even with soft tubes, I'd have some output...Using a
good AC4, bias set right, checked the fuse lamp, and the slide switch
on the left rear...Any thoughts from someone with more time with the
TR4's than I, before I roll-up my sleeves and get to work?

(10 bucks I think, it's been awhile) to make them boatanchor
compatible...Been using it for 5 years now...Works great on my TR4C and T4XC

[drakelist] Off-Topic, But...

Morning Guys,
Anybody on the list have any experience running a gas powered AC
generator on a boat?...A buddy and I are putting a /mm field day
operation together on my 20ft pontoon boat this year...Anchored in the
middle of the lake, multi-band vertical clamped to the rail, you get the
idea...Anyway, what things do we have to consider with respect to AC
ground?...We don't want to go QRP with batteries, or use the boat's 12V
system and just let the outboard idle for 24 hours...Any thoughts?

Hi Bruce,
Echo what Neil said...There's a small tab and spring on either side of
the gear assembly...If you pull that back, it disengages the gear for
that dial, so it will free-wheel...They interact slightly, so you'll
have to do it a couple of timesYou'll get the hang of it...We all
did...hi,hi

Hey Ted,
Put the childish political BS somewhere else...
Rick K9RSW

Ted Wright wrote:
John Kerry visits a primary school and sits in on one of the classes,
which is in the middle of a discussion on words and their meaning. The
teacher asks Mr. Kerry if he would like to lead the discussion of the
word tragedy. So, the illustrious leader asks the class for an
example of a tragedy.

One little boy stands up and offers: If my best friend, who lives on
a farm, is playing in the field and a runaway tractor comes along and
knocks him dead, that would be a tragedy.

That's wrong, Kerry shouts. That would be considered an accident.

A little girl raises her hand: If a school bus carrying 50 children
drove over a cliff, killing everyone inside, that would be a tragedy.

You are completely incorrect shouts the Senator. That would be what
we would consider a great loss. The room goes silent. No other
children volunteer. Kerry searches the room. Isn't there someone here
who can give me an example of a tragedy?

Finally at the back of the room Little Johnny raises his hand. In a
quiet voice he says: If a plane carrying the Senator John Kerry were
struck by a missile and blown to smithereens, that would be a tragedy.

Fantastic! exclaims Kerry. You are absolutely right. Can you tell
me why that would be a tragedy?.

Well, says Little Johnny, because it sure as hell wouldn't be a
great loss and it probably wouldn't be an accident!

Hi Pat,
What I didBreak out 4 pins from an old octal (8 pin) tube
base...Easy with a pair of pliers...Solder them on to a piece of lamp
cord...Most newer lamp cord is polarized if you look closely, this is
handy 'cause you'll need to respect gndThe pins fit perfectly and
snug in the connector holes...Push it in right up to the
insulation...I've been using this set-up for years

Hello,
I'm looking for some accessory crystals for the 2-B receiver. I
really
need the one for 10m CW -- which is 24.5 mHz.
Also, a couple for WWV would be nice: either 13.5 or 14 mHz and 11.5
or 19
mHz.

Am also trying to find an knob for the 2-BQ -- the Q-mult tuning
knob.
I think it's the same as the preselector knob on the 2-B. If you come
upon
anything, let me know; thanks!

Evening to the list,
Thanks to one and all for their input on my T-4XC question
yesterday...The consensus was pretty much do an alignment on the xmtr
and a re-cap on the AC-4 that went south...But the output on 80,40, and
20 sure is sweet though...Like drive'n a new car...Looks like I know
what I'll be doing this SatNeed that 10 meters
