Hello Jeff the group,

Probably the most versitile keyers ever made are the AEA Morsematic series.
They have both positive and negative keying output and will key the Drakes
without extra circuitry. If you like bugs, the automatic dash repeat can be
turned off. The keyers come up on upay from time to time and at hamfests as
well. They have a large memory for contest messages and an automatic serial
number sequencer as well as many other features that I don't remember. It
has been 30 years since I designed the MM-1.

Just tagging on...

I've been very satisfied with a tiny PIC-based keyer from n0xas. He
sells the kits on eBay (PicoKeyer) for about $18 including a battery.
For $2 more get the optional speed-control pot. It has four memories,
but only supports one play button, so memory one is fine, but it's not
too convenient to use messages 2 through 4; you have to hold the play
button down longer to access the additional memories beyond the first
one.

It uses dual MOSFET's for keying, so will work with + or - voltages up
to 60 v. It seems to key my T4XC alright, and the coin-sized battery is
still usable after over a year!

In fairness, I've also had good success with another PIC-based keyer,
from k1el (K-one-EL) - it makes it easier to access up to four memorized
messages with a separate button for each memory, but the speed control
is less convenient than n0xas's unit (doesn't support a pot, so speed is
only adjustable via the built-in menu system).

Either one will fit into an Altoids tin, with room left for most of the
altoids!

Take heed of the neg vs pos keying that Garey talked about and also
the absolute voltage. The old Hallicrafters TO keyer with its mercury
wetted relay will key anything, even high current together with high
standoff voltage if you install the right RC snubber.

The Nye Viking ESK-001 is kind of hard to find but it features both
neg and pos (switchable from the rear panel) 300V transistor
switches, making it one of the few transistor keyers that can easily
handle both cathode keying and grid-block (like the Drakes).

I have both a TO and the ESK-001.

Be careful of the modern IC keyers on the market. Many of them do not
handle neg keying and their max voltage is typically under 50V. You
could always build a HV interface circuit if you wished. I did and
use it with my low voltage keyers.

The DX-20, like many of the small transmitters of its type, is cathode
keyed. What this means is that while the voltage across a key is
positive related to ground, the open key voltage can be several
hundred volts, and the full cathode current of the oscillator and final
have to pass through the keying device.

Definitely a place where a KEYSALL or similar is going to be required
for most modern keyers. The HA-1 will handle it, with the appropriate
snubber network.

The Idiom Press keyers will not SAFELY key this transmitter without an

I appreciate the information this thread has produced. I have
forwarded some of it to a friend who I recently gave an old Heath
DX-20 that he is going to pair with his R4C. Myself, I also do not
like iambic keys. I have two Vibrokeyers, one jeweled and one not,
and I use them with an MFJ keyer and a trusty Hallicrafters TO keyer.
I prefer the Hallicrafters unit, but warn people to be sure to replace
all of the capacitors in the unit. Those old Black Beauty tubulars
were junk when new, and they cause all sorts of problems in the keyer
when they start to leak. The electrolytics will blow out and take the
power supply components with them. Once these are replaced, the unit
gives great service. Then, there is my old Vibroplex Champion bug.
That is another keeper. I still have the only remaining part of my
novice station which is a Johnson Speed-x straight key, but rarely use
it due to grad school induced carpal tunnel problems. Much of my
operating is done with CW. Preferably with vacuum state equipment.

The Drake transmitters are all NEGATIVE voltage to ground, while most
modern transceivers are POSITIVE to ground.

Most keyers will key either, but may require changing an internal jumper
or switch, UNLESS they use hard relay contacts for keying.

The Drake key line is approximately -60 VDC, and only requires a few mA
to key. So any relay would be fine, and just about all keyers with
transistor keying will handle it as long as the polarity is correct.

Personally I use the CMOS-4 from Idiom because it's one of the few that
I can turn off that stupid iambic junk that will drive any bug user
crazy! :-)

Also at the risk of blaspheme, I'm a big fan of the MFJ keyers. I've
been using one with a vibro iambic, into my C twins for years.
Better to spend as much as you dare on a quality paddle. Better yet,

Frankly, for some things, like calling CQ if you don't do it with an
programmed keyer, iambic is much more efficient. Squeezing off an A for
example is easier for me than hitting thumb then index, even though they
seem like very similar motions. C's and Q's are much easier. I don't use
iambic very often, but I practiced the CQ sequence because I do it manually
when mobile, and it makes calling much easier. Most of the rest of the
time, because I learned on a bug, I tend to slap the paddle more as if it
were a single lever. I've found dual paddle keys to be better built, more
available, and easier to use than the few single paddle ones that are
available, and they work as well with either mode. So, figure out what
works for you, and develop your own opinion. You know what they say about
opinions!

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll admit that I was starting to fall
for the iambic is better/faster mantra that you get from...well...the
manufacturers of iambic keys.

I'll keep my eyes open at the local hamfest here on Long Island to see if

Jeff -

Hi Steve,

I dug out my schematic and it actually takes a few components. My
recollection was only of the inductor. Basically you place a series
LC circuit in the secondary of T2 to filter out the harmonics from the
sawtooth before they reach the speaker.

I first elected to lower the freq of the sidetone down to 750Hz
because that was more to my preference. I simply placed 160pF across
C8 to accomplish this.

The series LC filter is then made resonant at 750Hz. I used a 31mH
torriod in series with 1.33uF of capacitance (formed by a 1uF in
parallel with 0.33uF). Other LC combinations of 750Hz resonance will
work as long as you are mindful of the series R of the inductor, which
determines the Q. If the inductor is too lossy, the tone won't be as
pure. Correspondinly if the Q is quite high then then you may have
to tweak either the oscillator or resonator capacitor to match up the
resonance to the oscillator.

I have probably made it sound harder than it really is. The mod
worked first time for me using an inductor out of my junk box. I
think the Q fell between 5 and 10.

  The question is,
what is a suitable keyer to use with the transmitter?

I have a 1960's era Hallicrafters TO Keyer with a Vibroplex Vibrokeyer
like yours. And, a 1980's era Wm. Nye ESK-001 keyer that I use with a
Vibroplex Iambic key. And, finally, a LogiKit (Idiom Press) CMOS-4
Keyer that I use with a Bencher BY-1 key.

All thee setups key my Drake T-4XC just fine!

I didn't know that! I had to drag out the manual and check it out.

I used to be able to send good code with my W9TO keyer but bought a new
Nye keyer in the mid-1980s along with a Bencher Iambic key. I never
learned how to use iambic mode and don't care about it. However, I did
become accustomed to the dot and dash memory and now I can hardly send
without it -- especially below 25 wpm or so.. So, the TO keyer is not
getting much use anymore. (But it looks *so* good with the Drake
4-Line!)

The Nye and the CMOS-4 both have dot / dash memory and the memory
function works even with a non-iambic key.

With an iambic key connected to the CMOS-4, I don't find *any* mode that
is not iambic capable. What V mode are you using? Are you running V9
with no dot/dash memory?

And, more generally, what is the difference between Curtis, Accukeyer
and Logikey modes? I've tried the various modes now and other than dot
and dash memory options I don't see much difference. Man, I've been
pounding brass since '65 and I've got a lot to learn!
