RE: [DX-CHAT] Airmail Envelopes?

2006-08-01 Thread Dennis Kopecky
Have you been near a Dollar Store or 99 cent store lately ? While I haven't checked, I could swear they had them, although they might only be the No. 10 business size, which is not what you want. That might also imply that they are made by MEAD company, who does most of the school supplies around here, and should be shipping with most of the other stuff that will be turning up on shelves very soon.

Anyone know a good source of Airmail Envelopes? Wal-Mart and the big-box office supply stores no longer carry them.

Thanks,

[DX-CHAT] Needed band-countries

2006-08-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi folks,
Is there any information published anywhere for DXCC countries regarding what band/modes are needed to different places? Or is just the overall need for an all time new one all that is available?
Going to a not-so-rare country, the question arises- Operate on 20 where I can get lots of contacts but hardly anyone really needs it, or call cq till blue in the face on other bands where it is needed, but no one tunes? I hate to be asked a million times on twenty- when are you going to be on?, but then when you are there are no callers.
Just thought it would be nice to be able to tell where the actual need is.

Offhand, I don't know of anything... and it's something that may vary from
DX'er to DX'er anyway.

The closest thing that comes to mind is the DX Bulleting annual survey showing
the 100 most wanted, overall and by regions. But by bands too? I don't recall
if it shows that.

Perchance the best thing to do is to publish a tentative schedule, saying about
when you plan to be on which bands. Which of course won't satisfy DX'er X when
he tells you that band Y is open from you to him RIGHT NOW, so drop the pileup
and QSY to take care of his needs NOW.

Enjoy the trip anyway. And if I can get the antenna up at the new QTH in the
next few days, I'll work you anyway no matter where you are... I need FP under
the new call everywhere! g

(PS to all: yes, I know my old WN3VAW QSO's still count, or would if I ever get
around to submitting the cards; that was supposed to be a little levity!)

Title: Message

My
experience in operating from not-rare places is that the WARC bands and the low
bandsproduce the most general interest. On my visits to FJ and KP2 with an
ic-706 and a palm tree dipole, I was amazed at the pileups on 12m, 17m, 30m and
80m.

You
can also seek out the difficult paths, for examplefrom the Carribean to
the far east, or from Oceana to Europe. A propagation forecasting program
cansuggest the bands and times most likely to provide openings over such
paths, and you will find grateful DXers at the other end.

From a
mode perspective, I got much more attention when working CWor RTTY than
SSB.And the former two modes don't wake up the XYL...

[DX-CHAT] Cry-Babies

2006-08-01 Thread Jim Abercrombie

I've been reading this thread about the operation
of KH8SI and all I've got to say is instead of being a cry-baby, you should
sharpen your DX skills. I've had no problem working them 5 times on 3 bands-all
SSB.

What I've noticed is callers parking on one
frequency and calling over and over even while he is working somebody.
I've got news for you- he's not listening on your frequency. What you need
to do is listen up the band and try to find the frequency where is is answering
callers. Park your VFO there and call him there. He usually will answer
all he can hear on that frequency until he can no longer hear anyone there. I
don't care if he said 200 to 220, He will find someone and park there on that
frequency. There are some operators that move the QSX frequency after each
contact, but if you listen, you will find his pattern and can anticipate where
you need to call him. The secret to working DX is listen more and call
less I give you the example of Martti Lane, His usual method of operation
is to work the pile-up on one frequency while all the un-initiated are calling
blindly.

I can say this with authority because I am at the
top of the honor roll on both mixed and phone. I don't have a huge
station: an AL-80B and a 5-band two-element cubical quad up 65 feet. I worked
all my dx using the skills mentioned above. Working the Swains Island on
17 meters yesterday was like shooting fish in a barrel. I got 'em with one
call with 100 watts.

You guys complaining about propagation need to
realize every area of the earth has good propagation at certain times. I am
recalling someone said here the South East has better propagation than the
1,2's, and 3's.. They have better propagation to the four oscar than I do, but I
worked him even with 100 watts. So grow up and
qwitcherbelliachin'.

I agree with Jose. I have poor antennas and worked KH8SI twice (two
bands). But despite the DX operators on this xpedition, the stations
they're running do leave something to be desired.

The other night on 17 mtr, I worked Samoa and another island grp each only
abt 400 mi or less from KH8SI. The other two stations were over S9. KH8SI
was in the noise. So not only do they possibly have a wall of noise (you
can not imagine what it sounds like unless you've experienced it), but they
may have weak RX signals to boot.

The op last night on 20M was good. But they don't seem to have a grasp of
where their signal is going (propagation). But again perhaps the generator
noise problems there also contribute to some of the strange operating
patterns heard.

What we all need is patience and listen listen listen. The hardest skill
to learn in radio is not to key the rig right away!
