Re: [DX-CHAT] DXCC Yearbook
Bizarrely I received my yearbook a couple of weeks ago, and I'm 3000 miles away There are a few interesting articles in it. Personally I've never been bothered about seeing listings. I know how many I've worked, how many I need and I work DX for my own satisfaction, not to see myself in a league table. In any case, shouldn't listings be put on a website somewhere on the ARRL site? It's 2007, not 1957, so why tie up about a zillion sheets of paper with something that's out of date by the time it's printed? cheers Dave G0OIL Jim Reisert AD1C [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: At 09:04 PM 7/23/2007, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Since they removed the DXCC listings, including the Honor Roll List, it is nothing more than reading How's DX on steroids. [DX-CHAT] DXCC Yearbook
After standing out by the mailbox all night, my DXCC Yearbook finally came today. I was so looking forward to seeing my call in there for the Challenge award. I thought that was the reason we had to have all of our cards in by 12/31/06 so they would count for this years Challenge Award. This year's yearbook was the worst piece of junk I have ever seen since I have been getting the book. I promptly threw mine in the trash to be recycled. I hold DXCC Phone award number 2298 and I have been at the top of the honor roll for several years. I was ahead of K4MQG in the phone listings because I had already had BS7H confirmed from 1995. I'm sure he has caught me by now. The only thing I have to work for now is the Challenge Award and that's why I was greatly disappointed in this year's yearbook. The ARRL can save money by not sending me a yearbook next year. It is useless in it's present form. [DX-CHAT] ARRL DXCC database
Hi DX-ers. Is anybody experiencing problems with the LoTW databases? I worked Dave Summer as 4O3ZZ and he put his QSOs on the LoTW. The QSO showed up that I worked him. After my application for credit, the QSO was credited to my Challenge DXCC account but not to my DXCC account as a new country. Strange, why one database gets updated while the other one not. I also noticed substantial discrepancies between the Challenge and DXCC band databases. May be it is just my accounts are messed up. I wonder if this problem relates to N7NG's departure from ARRL. Wayne was on the ball each time I contacted him.. So far my e-mail to ARRL resulted in Thank you for your message regarding your LoTW account. Due to the volume of emails and phone calls, your message will be handled as quickly as possible. I do realize I have to give them time to investigate the matter.. 73s Lou KE1F Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org

Re: [DX-CHAT] Yearbook whine
I don't think this is an issue of connectivity or the desire for non-computer-savvy hams to have to much through the ARRL site, etc. In my opinion, it's exactly the same issue as paper QSLs versus LoTW. With the standings printed in the yearbook, it's there on paper pages, now and forever more, what the standings were as of a certain snapshot of time. In 10 or 20 years, it's nice to go back and look at the standings and see where you and your friends were in 2007. Sure, the Web serves a purpose of giving you the information in near-real-time, but it doesn't have the permanence or the feel of authority of the printed page. I'm damned sick and tired of being nickled-and-dimed everywhere in life. This isn't a corporation that needs to meet the bottom line every quarter or face a shareholder revolt. The League is an organization who's mission includes administering the DXCC program. It's something we do for pleasure and a sense of personal pride of accomplishment. We pay per-QSO to have our cards checked, for each certificate, plaque and (formerly) pins, etc. Now insult is added to injury, IMHO, in removing the standings. [DX-CHAT] A public apology to ND1L
We might all note that Bill appears to be a subscriber to this list. For some reason, Bill took umbrage (no, he was REALLY PO'd) at my forwarding his quite reasonable response to my eMail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] in this reflector. I didn't see anything personal, nasty or even defensive in his reply to me, and I posted it to the Reflector in its entirety, without comment one way or the other. Of course, I sent my original question to the LEAGUE, and not to Bill personally. Since the LEAGUE is OUR association, I didn't give a second thought to printing the LEAGUE'S response to this question and subsequent discussion here. In fact, some of you have since privately eMailed me thanking me for publishing the League's response. Apparently, I should have been more discreet and paraphrased the response instead of quoting it. My apologies to Bill for, if nothing else, bringing him into this discussion. Additionally, because of my many years of professional typesetting experience, I have also sent Bill a few suggestions as to how MUCH more data may be fit into less space. I have never seen any Yearbook that didn't list the members of the class, BTW. I'm done with this subject. Bill can ream me out personally the next time I bring a batch of cards up to Newington (hello, BS7H). RE: [DX-CHAT] A public apology to NC1L
Without, for obvious reasons, getting into the specifics... you'd be surprised at who all is a member of this list. And others. (I was shocked when a certain public official from a certain regulatory agency posted a comment to another reflector last week... had no idea he was a member. But I digress.) Many amateurs who would be considered public figures, such as elected or appointed ARRL officials and/or ARRL staff, essentially lurk on this and other reflectors... so yes, they do read most of the comments (which on some other reflectors can get REAL nasty). However, if and when they choose to reply, they usually do so privately. Why? Simple. There has to be a distinction between their personal, private thoughts and comments... and those that they make on behalf of the organization (be it the ARRL, FCC, QCWA, RAC, etc.) in an offical capacity. Their private musings may not always agree with the organization's policies. And they're human, something we tend to forget. For example: Let's pick on Wayne N7NG, who is no longer an ARRL staff member. Yes, he was a member of this reflector during his time in Newington, as a few of you also know. Wayne on many occasions made private comments to me about certain reflector posts (no, I'm not going to tell you which ones). But, and this is important, they were intended as amateur-to-amateur (and I would hope friend-to-friend), not ARRL Staff Official Policy to Reflector Administrator. In a very small handful of cases, I would sometimes refer (indirectly) to his comments in a public post -- and always with his prior knowledge and permission. In every case, this was done this way explicitly to prevent someone from waving his post as an official change of policy or procedure. My personal rule of thumb [and this is NOT reflector policy!] is and remains: Under normal circumstances, before repeating a private post to a public reflector, unless it is clearly understood otherwise, I check with the sender to get their permission. A lesson I learned the hard way, many moons ago, from VE1DX. This avoids any problems with whether or not a private post was intended to be public. 'nuff said. Go work some DX and then come tell us about it! 73, ron w3wn administrator, dx chat Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
RE: [DX-CHAT] DXCC Yearbook
A computer listing of one's achievements is still ... even in this modern world... NOT as satisfying as seeing it on the printed page. Computer postings are, in the archivest's lingo, ephemeral and so in the extreme. Talk to a historian about future documentation research if u want to see a guy's face fall. An organization serves its members. The greatest thing its paper organ can do is FEATURE ITS MEMBERS. Must be engineers, not humanists, deciding to delete paper listings of all contest entrants or all DXCC achievements.
