[DX-CHAT] Honor Roll (ST0R and checkers) For information

2011-09-15 Thread ragnar otterstad

We all know the reason Lionel.    Some Dxers like to screw the
deserving for every
penny they can, hence the upsurge in the $5 OQRS etc.    If dxpeditions
cant be funded
withou having to rely on a few hundred bucks from the QSL cards, then
they shouldn't
go !  It will be interesting to see what happens with the logs of T32C
- will they or won't they?

RE: [DX-CHAT] Honor Roll (ST0R and checkers) For information

2011-09-15 Thread Paul

All

IMO, you're looking at the QSL situation the wrong way. First
off saying Some DXers like to screw the deserving for every penny is a
rather broad brush comment that is really out of line. Yeah, we all know of
a few (a very small few) who abused the sport for personal gain. So let's
knock off those sorts of comments.

I'll turn the If dxpeditions cant be funded without having to
rely on a few hundred bucks from the QSL cards, then they shouldn't go!
comment around. How much money do you have invested in your station? $5k?
$10k? More? People sure like to brag about their equipment and antennas and
what they've invested, yet they complain about sending $5 to confirm an
operation? Especially when the operators went to personal expense, took
weeks off work/away from family and in some cases were at personal risk. I
don't get it. It's NOT about FUNDING. It's about SHOWING YOUR APPRECIATION
FOR WHAT THESE PEOPLE DID FOR THE HOBBY.

Come on, stop being such cheap-skates when it comes to QSLing
the big DXPeditions!

On to the subject of QSL checking. And I can speak from
experience on the matter as I did manage the prestigious WAZ Award for a
number of years. I hate to say this, but not every QSL checker (even if a
veteran DXer) really understands how to check cards. CQ works through some
national radio societies and sometimes the person they appoint might not be
the best suited for the task. What's the risk you ask? It's NOT with big
operations like ST0R. Those cards are pretty solid. It's the run of the
mill DX (as viewed across the country list). How many of you have received
blank QSL cards?

I saw 160 cards that were not doctored as such, but they were
fakes. How did I know? I understand propagation! When I got a card from a
station in zone 15, telling me he worked zone 31 at 1300Z on 160 meters, I
called BS and asked the guy to please check to see if the card was filled
out incorrectly as there was no way a QSO on 160 from 15 to zone 31 could
take place at such a time.

So, am I saying QSL checkers don't know what they are doing? NOT
AT ALL. But as an award administrator, you have to balance the integrity of
the program within the APPLICATION OF THE RULES. 160 meters is a pretty
specialized band as is 6 Meters. Why would you want to see someone get an
award for these two challenging bands through fraudulent means? If
maintaining the integrity of the award demands more specialized checking, so
be it.

Do I think it seems rather silly that a DXCC (or WAZ) Field
Checker can't approve a 160 meter QSO as indicated on a card from ST0R when
he can approve QSL for all the other bands? Yeah, I suppose so. Maybe there
is a REASONABLE way to resolve this, but that's another subject entirely.
Look at it from the Award Administrator point of view, we can't open
ourselves up to managing awards based on the exception to the rule. That
leads to inconsistencies and cries of unfair.

Some people in DX community are taking DXpeditions for granted.

Here is the message from K3NA looking for operators willing to go to two major
DXpeditions in 2012:

Financial and 'free days' requirements are listed at the bottom, but before you
scroll to the bottom of the E-mail check other requirements people going to
those DXpeditions should have.

However, make the honor roll with 150 watts and a dipole..

Or do so from Northern Europe where signals are many dB down and openings are
always shorter in than in Southern Europe.  Also we have to break through the
wall of Italians and their chaotic
random-calling-till-doomsday-for-maximum-QRM technique in order to work
anything.

  Making the

Well, I have 327 cfmd on CW with 100W and vertical/wires.
I have not even sent my cards in to the the ARRL DXCC
desk. Sure, some might not be good counters due to lack
of documentation or other reasons, but to me they all good.
What really that great about being on the Honor Roll and
the Honor Roll plaque when you pass from this QTH. You
 can't take it with you.

I know what I have accomplished, and for me that is a great
reward in itself. I work DX for the sheer fun of it and the
great feeling of working a new one (like H44VV Mon Morn -
a new one on 40M CW). Another great pleasure is getting
those very nice picture QSL cards.

Now I know everyone has their own goals, and I am certainly
NOT berating the DXCC program or those who have the
goal of Honor Roll or Top of Honor Roll. If your goal is
Top of Honor Roll, hope you are not too dissapointed as
there are a lot of entities out there that I will probably not
see activated in my life time, and you may not see activated
in your life time. So, work the DX for the fun of it and let
the pudding come as it may :-)

 As Tony, W4FOA said, this is my $ 0.03 worth :-) :-)

[DX-CHAT] Honor Roll

2002-12-02 Thread Shelby Summerville
Received today results from last DXCC submission, and I'm fortunate to have
achieved Honor Roll! This is not a brag, just a heartfelt thanks to all that
made it possible! Over the years, I have found that working them is only a
small part of the battle! Without those that traveled on various
DXPedetions, others that live/operate from sparsely populated areas, the
thoughtfulness of those that did respond to QSL requests, the many QSL
managers that continue to do a thankless job, and the DX community in
general, this hobby would cease to be of little interest to me! For fear of
omitting anyone, I will just say:
 THANKS TO ALL
