Actually, the country files and award databases are uploaded to my
website. They would have to be installed manually.

The latest country file is always here:

http://www.country-files.com/dx4win/download9/dx4win9_cty.zip

I have not done anything like this for the custom awards and I've
blocked the directory listing.

If you use these files you are ON YOUR OWN. I do NOT want to support
this method of updating DX4WIN 9. I'd rather you upgrade your
operating system. Seriously. I'm not joking.

Re: [Dx4win] Check For Updates Won't Run

2018-03-31 Thread David Kozinn, K2DBK
A little digging shows that this is hosted by qth.com. It might be possible
to have a single website (dx4win.com) not redirected to https, but A) That's
a terrible idea, and B) Sooner or later this is going to become a problem
for almost every website, as https is becoming standard for everyone.

The only short-term workaround that I can think of would be to host the
actual files on a different website without https and work up a manual
process to download and install. (No Jim, I am not suggesting
son-of-dxupdate-for-XP-only).

That's it. Either the March 12th website certificate update caused this, or
whomever is running the dx4win.com website enabled automatic redirection
from http to https.
To support Windows XP, that redirect will need to be turned off.
Unfortunately, this has a security impact for everyone not running Windows

Hi Ed,

The updates are tangential to the problem, not the problem itself.

The DX4WIN website was issued a new security certificate on March 12
that is incompatible with Windows XP. If you try to access the URL:

   https://www.dx4win.com/

using Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, which is the latest for Windows
XP, that access will fail.

I believe that's correct. Rick, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have been offered to change the default security for my websites
(*.ad1c.us) from http to https. That will probably break some folks
which is why I have been holding off.

Re: [Dx4win] Check For Updates Won't Run

2018-03-31 Thread R.T.Liddy
Rick,

Thanks for the work and bad news!!! ;-)

Looks like I'll need to get a new Radio Computer
which means I'll need to get a new keying system
since mine works off the Printer port and I'll need
to install a new Contesting Program since mine uses
DOS and I'll need to migrate my files to the new
computer (if they will work there) and I'll need to
re-install DX4WIN on the new computer (if I decide
to stay with it since I'm so p'd-off right now) and
I'll need to get T-QSL working on the new box and
I'll need to modify the mounting for the new computer
since its dimensions will surely be different than now
and I'll need to ... yadda-yadda-yadda ... so many things that I haven't
even thought of at this point.

At my age and after just moving to a new QTH and having to buy/install
a new tower/antennas, I don't know if all this is really worth it. 57 years
in Ham Radio might be enough.

...time for my nap.

It's not antivirus - I copied DX4WIN 9.0.4.1176 on a Windows XP system I use
for TQSL testing and got the same error:
System error : The host name in the certificate is invalid or does not match

I dug into this as penance for giving an incorrect answer earlier.

The issue is Windows XP - the SSL certificate for DX4WIN is signed with the
SHA256 algorithm, which Windows XP does not support.
Try opening Internet Explorer and using that to download the .INF file and
you'll get the same error. You can download the file using Firefox because
Firefox has it's own built-in cryptographic libraries that aren't stuck in 2010.

The SSL certificate for the site was issued 3/12/2018, so that's what caused
the issue, not some update to DX4WIN. You can not get website certificates that
work with Windows XP's crypto libraries because most browsers will reject those
certificates. You can't run anything new than IE 8 on Windows XP, so there's no
upgrade available for you.

There's not a lot of choices here.
First, DX4WIN could change their website to not automatically redirect
http://dx4win.com/ to https://dx4win.com/ - that would allow the updates to
work at the cost of compromising the security of everyone not running Windows
XP.

Second, DX4WIN could change how it's downloading - using something like cURL to
do the downloads (that's what a do for TQSL so Windows 2000 and Windows XP can
work) rather than the built-in Windows libraries.

Probably the only simple fix is turning https off, which is horrible. Everyone
not running XP being held hostage to the XP systems.

There's nothing that you can do to correct this on your end other than an
upgrade to a supported OS.

Re: [Dx4win] Check For Updates Won't Run

2018-03-31 Thread R.T.Liddy
Ed, et al:

There must have been an "update" after 2/1
since everything worked FB before then and
now it's broken.

What now???

This is not a XP issue, it is a Paul issue at DX4Win to fix. If you can open
the www URL at listed, then there is nothing wrong with XP. As an aside I can
update N1MM+ with no issues. And load new versions of WSJT without any problems.
