[ECOLOG-L] Water use in making? chocolate

2016-04-02 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

Recently, as I was teaching about water conservation and use by different
human activities. As I was reviewing, I came across a graph that depicts
chocolate as a *huge* user of water. I assumed that it is the manufacturing
of chocolate (in contrast to watering cacao plants) the step that uses a
lot of water. I searched the web and asked a colleague who had been in
chocolatier school and did not get an answer.

If you have any constructive feedback, please, feel free to email it to me
at

blayjo...@gmail.com

Gratefully,

Jorge

P.S. Apologies for potenital duplicate emails.

[ECOLOG-L] Deadline approaching: Humboldt State Univ. short course on individual-based modeling

2016-04-02 Thread Steve Railsback

The April 7 application deadline is approaching for Humboldt State
University's sixth annual summer short course on individual-based
(agent-based) modeling, July 18-22, 2016. The course is intended
primarily for university faculty interested in teaching their own
modeling courses, but we also encourage participants interested mainly
in research applications. The course will be based on the textbook
"Agent-based and Individual-based Modeling: A Practical Introduction"
by Railsback and Grimm: http://www.railsback-grimm-abm-book.com/ and
led by Steve Railsback, Volker Grimm, and Steve Lytinen.

Additional information and the short application form are at:

Department of Natural Resources to support the development of a Habitat
Conservation Plan (HCP) for wind power facilities in Iowa.

Duties: Prepare and coordinate deployment of acoustic monitoring equipment
to collect bat echolocation data; train, schedule and manage the field
work of several teams of technicians collecting bat echolocation and
telemetry data across Iowa; analyze bat echolocation data following
specified protocols using echolocation analysis software; work with
permitted bat biologists to capture bats and fit them with telemetry
equipment; analyze telemetry data; produce GIS maps

Qualifications: BS in wildlife biology or associated field, excellent
organizational skills and attention to detail, experience analyzing data,
experience coordinating and managing field technicians, ability to
communicate clearly both orally and in writing, ability to have a flexible
schedule (i.e., holidays, nights, and weekends) as required, successful
applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoc opportunity with USDA-ARS

2016-04-02 Thread Liebig, Mark
ECOLOG Announcement

The Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory (NGPRL) in Mandan, ND, seeks a
Postdoctoral Research Associate (Soil Scientist/Ecologist, GS-11) for a
two-year appointment. The incumbent will participate in a regional USDA-CAP
project with specific responsibility for research to determine ecosystem
services derived from integrated crop-livestock production systems. The
incumbent will work individually and with regional team members to generate and
integrate crop, livestock, soil, water, and greenhouse gas data from on-going
long-term experiments at NGPRL and elsewhere in the northern Great Plains. The
research is expected to develop new knowledge concerning the environmental
sustainability of integrated crop-livestock production systems based on crop
and livestock production, soil and water quality, and greenhouse gas emissions.
This position requires a recent Ph.D. in biological sciences, soil science,
agronomy, biogeochemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
Proficiency in statistical analyses is required, and the ability to manage
multiple datasets concurrently is highly desirable. Proficiency in soil, water,
and greenhouse gas sampling and analysis is also highly desirable. Ability to
work as a collaborative team member is essential. Citizenship restrictions
