[ECOLOG-L] National Geographic Request for Proposals - AI for Earth, Artificial intelligence tools for a more sustainable planet

Subject: [okgis] {Disarmed} National Geographic Request for Proposals - AI
for Earth, Artificial intelligence tools for a more sustainable planet

The National Geographic Society (NGS) and
Microsoft's AI for Earth program are
partnering to support the exploration of how AI can help us understand,
engage, and protect the planet.

The $1 million AI for Earth Innovation Grant will provide grants to 5-15
novel projects that improve the way we monitor, model, and ultimately manage
Earth's natural systems for a more sustainable future.

The grants will support the creation and deployment of open source trained
models and algorithms that are available to other environmental researchers
and innovators and thereby have the potential to provide exponential impact.
To qualify, applications should outline a proposal to use AI for
conservation in at least one of the following core areas:
* Biodiversity conservation: Species are going extinct at alarming
rates, and our planet's last wild places need protection.
* Climate change: Extreme weather events, rising sea levels, higher
global temperatures, and increased ocean acidity threaten human health,
infrastructure, and the natural systems we rely on for life itself.
* Agriculture: To feed the world's rapidly growing population,
farmers must produce more food on less arable land, and with lower
environmental impact.
* Water: In the next two decades, demand for fresh water-for human
consumption, agriculture, and hygiene-is predicted to dramatically outpace
supply.
Below are just a few examples of the types of tools that we are interested
in supporting:
* Biodiversity conservation: acoustic and image classification,
geotemporal distribution models
* Climate change: temperature and precipitation model downscaling,
risk optimization
* Agriculture: health monitoring in crops and livestock, yield
modeling
* Water: groundwater modeling, flood prediction

[ECOLOG-L] Wild Horses and Wildlife

Greetings Ecologers,

With generous funding from the renewable resources extension act and the United
States Forest Service, The University of California Cooperative Extension in
Modoc County was able to hire two summer wild horse interns to learn about wild
horses and see first-hand the controversy and ecological damage being done on
western lands. One of the interns found out about the job on the ecolog

wildlife, I ask that you start reading about the detrimental effects that wild

[ECOLOG-L] Genomics and Wildlife/Fisheries Management

Hi All:

Genomics can be a very useful tool for the conservation of species. We are
interes
interested in examining the extent that genomics has been integrated into
wildlif
wildlife and fisheries management decisions.

We know of many genomic studies on wildlife species (ranging from species that
that are rare to those that are economically important). We are looking for h
for how the information from those studies are being used in wildlife manag
management and conservation. For example, there are few cases of genomics provi
providing increased resolution for stock identification. We are looking for m
for more of these cases. We are also specifically looking for cases where a gen
a gene under selection (e.g., a gene for thermal tolerance) has been ident
identified and that information used in a management decision.

If you or your colleagues have implemented genomic data into management dec
decisions, we would greatly appreciate your help in answering the fol
following:

1) Can you please describe the situation in a few sentences?
2) Can you point us to any of the management literature (e.g.,
recovery plan, ESA listing decision, federal register, state wildlife action
action plan) that shows how the data were used?
3) Please direct us to the science that was used in the paper.

Please send all responses to ashleywalt...@fs.fed.us.

[ECOLOG-L] Ecology blog for the classroom

2018-08-14 Thread Fred Singer
I’m delighted to announce two improvements to my blog “Fred’s Ecology and
Environmental Tales:
AKA The FEET”. (fredsingerecology.com). These changes should make it more
accessible to
instructors and students. First, I have a section entitled “Teaching with the
FEET” that gives several
ideas of how to use this blog in the classroom. Second, I now have a table of
contents, so if your
class is discussing, for example, “Evolutionary ecology” or “Disease ecology”,
you can see what is
listed under those topics, and click on any title that sounds appealing.

For the few (thousands) of you who don’t know about my blog, it is designed for
people who want to
learn about how ecologists and environmental scientists do their work. Every
week (during the
academic year – two weeks during the summer) or so, I post a true and riveting
tale about ecology
and the environment. Each tale has a humanistic component that underlies a
very science-y story. I
talk about where scientists come up with their ideas, how they investigate
them, and what types of
conclusions they come to. There are always data. Recent articles from the
journals Ecology and
Conservation Biology are the basis of these tales. All of my posts have at
least one graph or table
taken directly from the original article (with the permission of the journals
and the authors).
Conversations with people also come into play, as I always ask authors how they
got interested in
their projects, and whether they were surprised by their findings.

So please check it out at fredsingerecology.com. I should point out that I am
a very different person
from the notorious climate change denier who shares my name.

If you like what you see please share with your colleagues.

[ECOLOG-L] Suggestions for starting a new lab? Buying supplies, equipment, etc.

2018-08-14 Thread Aaron T. Dossey

Hello,

I am (finally!) starting a biotech lab focused on various insect related
research projects (molecular biology, insect rearing, etc.).

It has been a long time since postdoc when I was in a working lab and
doing things like ordering, etc.  I am finding that the budget goes
pretty fast if one is not careful!   Seems like there should be some low
cost sources/work arounds for various consumables and equipment (ebay
for autoclave bags, safe or not?  etc.).

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
