[Elecraft] Sierra's 10th

2004-06-24 Thread Able2fly

Wonder just how many of us have had the pleasure of using N6KR's design, the
NORCAL Sierra? I picked up one on eBay and find it to be one sweet li'l rig.
I've had it on 40 and 20 with consistently good reports. The rx is a
pleasure to listen to. Definitely a keeper!

I read somewhere that Field Day, 1994 marked the prototype's debut. So happy
10th, Wayne!

[Elecraft] Re: CW Readers and CW Keyboards

2004-06-24 Thread Allen Ward
CW Get works pretty well when you monitor something like W1AW doing code
practice (with strong non-QSBed signal) but on real signals you get
drop-outs and a series of e e e e t t tt et te nonsense on very slow
unsteady signals. The problem is that it is the best that I have tried! The
human head is the best interface for receiving Morse. For keyboard keyers
try something from K1EL (http://www.k1el.com) for $25 he has a kit (K-20)
that is a keyboard keyer with variable speed, weighing, memories, etc. all
you add is the keyboard (inexpensive computer type keyboard) or use it with
paddles as a keyer. This unit would make a good keyer for portable
operation as no computer interface is required, comsumes little power, and
can be powered off the 12 volts for the K2 or whatever. He has several
other kits. He is easy to deal with and takes PayPal. I am not associated
with K1EL and his business.

[Elecraft] CW Readers and CW Keyboards

2004-06-24 Thread Doug Netherton

Larry Keith, KQ4BY wrote::

Has anyone used a CW Reader and/or CW keyboard with the K1? I would be
interested in hearing about your experiences..

I've used one of K1EL's K20 keyers with my K2. Its an interesting kit with two
PIC's and an EEPROM chip. One PIC is the keyer, one PIC is the keyboard
interface, and the EEPROM chip saves all your current parameters and messages.
The keyboard is used to control the keyer and can also be used to send CW from
the keyboard if you are tired of using your paddles. The K2 was set up to
accept straight key input, so it should also work with your K1. For me, it was
an interesting kit project for under $30. The web site www.k1el.com indicates
that he is currently out of K20 kits, but he has responded to demand with
additional kits in the past.

The usual disclaimers apply. I'm just a satisfied cuatomer.

[Elecraft] KX1 Desk stand...

2004-06-24 Thread Steve Banks
Hi All,

A couple of days ago I was trying to devise a small desktop stand for my KX1
to make it a bit easier to operate while seated at my desk. Having it
elevated and tilted forward were primary concerns. I noticed a couple of
recent posts on the reflector about the same subject and thought you might
benefit from what I found.

I tried a couple of unsuccessful homebrew clipboard-type ideas, but
eventually discovered a small metal Mesh Sorter at a local Office Depot
(Item No. 346-395, about $7), which serves the task nicely without having to
do anything other than just putting it to use.

The sorter is a tiered, 4-divider desktop stand measuring about 3D X 7W.
Its black finish matches the KX1 covers reasonably well. Its dividers of
four different heights afford the KX1 several convenient positions to rest
on while the paddle or any of its switches are operated. It seems quite
stable and works well for me. The KX1's rubber feet rest securely against
whatever divider I choose. The lowest one keeps the paddle at an excellent
height for me.

I have no interest in Office Depot, other than the fact that my local store
seems to have a good selection of stuff that frequently is helpful for
devout scroungers like me.

[Elecraft] K2 - no TX power problem

2004-06-24 Thread Gerhard Schwanz
Hi,

I have a problem: No TX Out on my freshly assembled K2.

f = 7100
Vpwr = 5V
Valc = 7,5V
Power reading on LCD = 0.2W (desired 5W)
Power consumption 440mA on 12,4V

At TP2 on transmit I get a nice signal on my oscilloscope, abt 0.005 Vrms

But behind TP2 the signal vanishes. All measurements are way too low, if
present at all. At U10 Pin 4 there's only a short Jump to 5V and immediately
back to 0 on keying. No HF detectable.

I unsoldered the Diode D36 and checked for resistance. Infinite in both
directions. Does this mean what I think? This D is broken?

Do you need any more information?
What else could I check?

Thanks for any advice in advance!

Thanks for noticing, Bill ;)

Not as well known is that I had a bit of help from Eric in
test/refinement of the prototype Sierra. So 2004 also marks the 10th
anniversary of our first collaboration.

Also, the Sierra wouldn't have happened without Doug Hendricks, KI6DS,
and Jim Cates, WA6GER (SK). These guys worked tirelessly to promote the
Sierra (and other designs) as club projects, and deserve much of the

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - no TX power problem

2004-06-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gerhardt,

Yes, I too would believe D36 is broken - it is quite fragile and will crack
if the leads are bent too close to the glass body - HANDLE WITH CARE.

You can temporarily substitute a 1N4007 diode until you can obtain a
replacement (the 1N4007 was used in the D36 location until the keying
waveshape change was implemented). You can likely find a 1N4007 easier than
the proper PIN diode.

With the 1N4007 in D36, your keying waveshape may not be exactly correct (it
will be close enough), and it should get you through the testing of your K2.

[Elecraft] Field Day dipole/ no radial vertical

2004-06-24 Thread Able2fly
I've been having considerable success with the resonant feedline dipole
(RFD) antenna as was described in QST a few years back and also in the '04
ARRL
Handbook. Its basically a 1/4 wavelength of antenna wire followed by your coax
feeder into the shack. Where they connect, the coax shield is left floating.
Some of the feedline is wound into a choke at the 1/2 W/L point or
thereabouts, decoupling and forming the dipole. (Position the choke for lowest
swr.)
With the far end pulled up high, they are good for long haul DX. I have one
cut for 40m and it works well with low swr on 30m, 17m, 15m. and 10m. Another
one for 20m rounds out the little farm. Mine aren't exactly vertical (kind of
exponentially curved) and seem to be a bit directional.

YMMV of course.

[Elecraft] Field Day Antennas

2004-06-24 Thread Daniel Reynolds
This will be my 2nd Field Day for my K2 #3421. This year I'm going to try my
Commercial Buddipole (this time it is almost twice as long with three pairs of
antenna arms and the 4 segment shock-corded whips). I'm also going to try
throwing up a W3EDP (85' inverted L with 15' counterpoise) for the low bands
and a compact transmitting loop (20' of 1/4 copper pre-tuned with matching
coax stubs for 20m and 40m).

Complementing my K2's power needs are the internal KBT2, a 7 AH external
gel-cell, and a small 5W solar panel.

My question for all of you Field Day guru's...

I'm closing on my first house today. None of these antennas exist at the house.
If I set them all up in a temporary sort of way in the backyard and take them
down after Field Day is done, can I still be considered 1B (especially if I
decide to log with a laptop plugged into commercial mains, and maybe drag the
K2 inside when it gets too hot outside)? The laptop won't be used for sending
or receiving, just logging. No towers or masts exist at the new QTH.

Thanks for your rule interpretations in advance... and enjoy Field Day!

includes shipping in the lower 48.

[Elecraft] KIO2 Noise

2004-06-24 Thread KI7V (John)
Hello,

I just installed the KIO2 option in my K2. All works well except that I now
obtain a lot of noise on my PSK31 waterfall display. The noise is effecting
the decoding of the PSK31 siganls. If I disconnect the serial cable from my
laptop, the noise disappears. In the instruction manual it stated to not
connect the sheild on the PC end of the KIO2 cable. I assume that this was
to isolate the K2 RF/DC ground from the PC ground? Any suggestions on
reducing the noise? Would putting a ferite choke on the cable be worth
while?
