[Elecraft] Transmit indicator

2005-02-07 Thread Stewart Baker
Something that has always surprised me is that the K2 has no front panel
indication of when it is on transmit. The only way to tell is when there is no
audio out of the loudspeaker, or the S meter has no LED's lit. If the AF gain
were turned fully down there is no way of knowing.
I can put my K2 into transmit by any of the following means:-
PTT switch on the mic body, switch on the mic base, key, footswitch, VOX or
computer.

I decided to make a clear indication of when the K2 was on transmit.
Getting inspiration from various articles on fitting zero beat indicators to a
K2, I now have a small red LED that is positioned in line with the RIT and RATE
buttons which illuminates on transmit. This was easily done with a small piece
of PCB material cut to size, and fixed as per the zero beat PCB's. The
miniature
LED is wired with a series 1k resistor between front panel board connector J1
pin 4 (/DOT-PTT) and pin 18 (5A).

I now feel much happier that I am not accidentally transmitting over someone
else's QSO because of a stuck PTT button on the microphone.

[Elecraft] Off Topic But I Couldn't Resist

2005-02-07 Thread Mike Walkington
Hi John,

It may seem strange to get some advice from a VK1 re the Bitterroot Valley!
I lived in Seattle from 2000 to 2003. In 2000 I read a newspaper article re
the re-introduction of Grizzly Bears to the Bitterroot. This sparked my
imagination because it implied that the area would probably be remote and
beautiful. I reorganized our family's August 2000 summer holiday, a 21 day
drive from Seattle to Mesa Verde and return through some of the most
fantastic (my opinion) country in the USA to include time traveling through
the Bitterroot. Sadly when we arrived the whole area was suffering from
serious wildfires (what we in Australia call bushfires) and I wasn't
prepared to stay in the cabin we had booked with my young children. Also it
seemed morally corrupt that we would consider holidaying in an area where
the majority of the locals were fighting for their survival. What we did see
confirmed my opinion that the area was remote, wild and beautiful. I hope
you decide to give it a go but I recommend that you join a local bush fire
brigade and help them with their communications.

Best wishes

Mike

Is there anyone on this list who lives in that area who could provide me
more information on living there? Please reply directly to me since this

No messing about with inserts, quick and easy, and is not noticeable. Just

Gary,

Specs would also need to address possible RFI problems caused by MUX etc,
transmit and receive. Can be a problem if design is skimpy, electrically and
mechanical. But great idea, if relays don't wake neighbours.

Darrell,

That's a fine idea. Would it be feasible for such a remote tuner to
have a
local MUX/encoder/sending unit so the power and control signals could all be
provided via a single coax line? The specifications would need to address
maximum cable runs for RG-58 and RG-8.

I've used the AT11-MP with my K2/100 (I wanted the
metering). You should be able to use the KAT100 with
the addition of the KIO for QRP without any problem.
You can keep or sell the KIO once you go with the
KPA100. With the LDG, you just won't have the quick
band change as with the KAT100 directly interfaced to
the rig. A loss of time in contests, but a minor
inconvenience for regular operations.

Three reasons:

1. (obvious) the integrated, automatic
pre-setting-per-antenna-per-VFO function, and the
(also obvious) dual antenna jack feature ... just way
too useful to not have.

2. (not so obvious) the LDG and most other relay-type
autotuners stop diddling the Ls and Cs when the
indicated VSWR ratio gets to a place where they decide
it's OK. The Elecraft tuning algorithm is recursive,
passing the implicit null(s) and finding the real
one. Once you have this feature, you won't go back.

3. (also not obvious) the Elecraft autotuners do a
better job matching the odd, and often abruptly high
impedances of field antennas, than the LDG or the SGC

[Elecraft] presto selecto, redux

2005-02-07 Thread Steve Jackson
I wrote:

The Elecraft tuning algorithm is recursive,

one. Once you have this feature, you won't go back.

Andrea asked:

Could you elaborate on this point?

Well, perhaps an elaboration is best made by the guys
that made the thing.

The 'net' of the issue is that the ideal setting for
the Elecraft tuner's relays is found by pressing, just
once, the tune button. With other tuners, they
click and clack until the first time the thing finds
1.6:1 or some such, and then fine tuning -or a search
for some other LC combination- is up to you, if you
have manual controls.

Like I mentioned, it's probably best if Elecraft
posted some clearer language about how their
auto-couplers (not really antenna tuners, but we know
that) work, versus the others.

Related topic: didn't someone say they had a method
to dampen the roar of the KAT100? Who was that, and,
what did your do? Is it scientifically repeatable,
or, do I have to experiment?

Other related topic: I wish the KAT2 and KAT100
settings were stored per VFO, per antenna, instead of
just per band per antenna. This should be a
selectable menu item, of course, and I know there's
precious little spare memory for the feature. I use
the VFOs for a makeshift band-stacking register. Or,
perhaps N4PY could access a little-known command to
make his external control program provide a virtual
band-stacking register function, to include the ATU
presets. Would that such an hidden command were
available. Maybe it is?

Final and semi-related topic: I'd like to find out
which decent and comprehensive logging programs
support CW keyboard function using the KY command of
the K2. I use DX4WIN now, it's superb, but despite
years of haranguing, KK4HD hasn't added this KY
capability (but he's added native support for the
Orion, even though there's only a few hundred of them
out there and there's nearly 5000 K2 rigs, go figure)
and my patience is wearing thin.

[Elecraft] Popping noise in audio

2005-02-07 Thread mikekopacki
Just used my newly completed K2 for my first contest - FYBO.

There was only one thing that was not 100%. I found that, on 40m and below,
with or without a headset, there was a popping kind of sound in the audio
when transmitting WITH THE PREAMP ON.

It was not detectable with the Preamp OFF, or on 20m, 15m or 10m with the
Preamp ON.

Filter settings were 500 Hz for FL1 and AF1 in all tests.

I did not hear it in SSB mode.

Any ideas? Thanks from

Re: [Elecraft] Which Audio Filter Kit?

2005-02-07 Thread Don
I have had my K2/100 with KDSP2 for 4 months now and almost never use the
DSP. The stock filters in the K2 seem to work just as good, and often
better, than the DSP filters but that is very much a matter of taste I
think. I operate only cw and my comments apply only to cw mode.

I like the DSP 'de-noiser' but I live in a pretty quiet environment and
rarely think to use it. In a noisier environment it might be worth the cost
of the DSP2 all by itself.

As you can see this is a very incomplete response to your question. The
answer depends a lot on your preferred modes and environment and I will be
watching to see what others say. The bottom line for me, though, is that
both the DSP or KAF2 are minor enhancements to an excellent receiver.

Don K7FJ

Hopefully, I'm about two and a half weeks from
ordering a K2 with about four accessory kits. My
question today is how much difference is there in
performance between the KDSP2 and the KAF2? Is the
KDSP2 worth the extra $140? I'm been using an
IC-746pro for about a year and a half so I am familiar
with the use of a DSP.

Comments and thoughts would be appreciated.

I have to disagree with the other guys .. I like the DSP in some
circumstances, it seems to be able to dig weak CW out of the noise on
occasions where I can't hear it at all with the normal filter (and

[Elecraft] KX1: ATU and misc

2005-02-07 Thread Andrea Borgia

Hello.

Been playing around with my newly built ATU for the KX1 and I'm a bit
puzzled by a few minor things:

1) my G5RV, accidentally shortened because of a wind gust, cannot be
tuned by my IC-736 in 30m while the KXAT1 happily reports a perfect
match (r1.0). Is that plausible?

2) in order to debug the problem above, how can I force the ATU to
forget the 30m band LC settings and retune, possibly without resetting
the main cpu? If I force a retune in 20m and 40m I hear lot of relays
clicking, while all is quiet on 30m. I checked the error code and it is
E00, so I'm stuck.

3) the pwr meter of the ATU reports 5.2-5.5W on 30m as opposed to
3.0-3.3W on 40m and 3.5-3.8W on 20m. No accurate calibration was done,
but the difference is striking. Any clues/things to investigate?

As a side-note (pun not intended), with respect to the KX1 power mods
suggested a while ago, I have a question: has anyone thought about
putting a fuse on the battery line? The potential for damage due to a
shorted Q6 is quite relevant even when running off internal batteries;
my external power cord is fused and this has already saved me once 8-)

Andrea.

[Elecraft] Tune position power adjustment

2005-02-07 Thread Marinos Markomanolakis, M.D.

Hi to all,
I have been using my K2/100 #4618 for the last month with marvelous results
both in RX and TX. I have also been using a manual ATU to tune my inverted V
in all bands, where I have the data on a paper and I adjust accordingly in a
matter of a few seconds.

The only thing that I do from time to time is to fine tune the SWR depending
on the exact frequency within each band, and I use the tune option for this.
Even if the power is all the way up to 110W, the rig will output 20W for
tuning and that is good, but I only need 2-3W for my fine adjustments which
will strain the finals less and create less QRM during the couple of seconds
that I need.
Here comes the question: Is there any hardware or software adjustment
possible that will make the K2/100 put out less than 20W when the tune
function is activated even with higher requested power settings ? That would
be very convenient in order to avoid having to manually decrease the power
to the 2-3W level every time I tune and then having to increase it back to
100W for the QSO.

The following is only my opinion...

I had the KAF2 and then built the KDSP2. The denoiser is ok, but I found that
the DSP filters made the rig hard to listen to. This is more pronounced on SSB.
The auto-notch was helpful, but it didn't make up for the irritating quality of
the DSP filters. I tried all sorts of settings and just never thought it
sounded right. I re-installed the KAF2 and I'm happier now. It's not perfect,
but it doesn't distract from the QSO.

If it makes any difference, I have had (and still have one) rigs with DSP from
other manufacturers. I haven't been thrilled by any of them. My favorite filter
is still an old Datong FL-3!

So that's my take on it. I know lots of folks are happy with DSP. I just think
it makes everything sound like a cheap cell phone.

[Elecraft] Re: KX1: ATU and misc

2005-02-07 Thread wayne burdick

Hi Andrea,

As the designer of the KX1 and options I thought I'd chip in here.

1) my G5RV, accidentally shortened because of a wind gust, cannot be
tuned by my IC-736 in 30m while the KXAT1 happily reports a perfect
match (r1.0). Is that plausible?

Tuners in some commercial transceivers are limited either by power
handling or by firmware to 3:1. The KXAT1 is quite capable of matching
some (but not all) loads that are 10:1 or higher, thanks to the low
power of the KX1.

2) in order to debug the problem above, how can I force the ATU to
forget the 30m band LC settings and retune, possibly without
resetting the main cpu? If I force a retune in 20m and 40m I hear lot
of relays clicking, while all is quiet on 30m. I checked the error
code and it is E00, so I'm stuck.

Just tune up into a dummy load on any band you want to reset.

3) the pwr meter of the ATU reports 5.2-5.5W on 30m as opposed to
3.0-3.3W on 40m and 3.5-3.8W on 20m. No accurate calibration was done,
but the difference is striking. Any clues/things to investigate?

If this happens even on a dummy load, the rig probably really is
putting out higher power on 30 m. The knee in the low-pass filter
moves around a bit and can have a large effect on per-band efficiency.
The knee can be adjusted to equalize the bands somewhat by squeezing or
spreading the low-pass filter toroid windings.

As a side-note (pun not intended), with respect to the KX1 power mods
suggested a while ago, I have a question: has anyone thought about
putting a fuse on the battery line? The potential for damage due to a
shorted Q6 is quite relevant even when running off internal batteries;
my external power cord is fused and this has already saved me once 8-)

In general I recommend operating the KX1 at 4 W and lower. The extra dB
or two you get by exceeding this is usually not worth the risk.

As for fusing, I don't know of any cases of battery melt-down on the
KX1. Remember that the maximum power output when running from the
internal battery is about 2 watts. If you really wanted to fuse it, you
could use a very small self-resetting polyfuse -- see www.digikey.com
for possible types to use. The main problem in the KX1 is space, so
you'll need a *really* small fuse.

Thanks, I'll have to go back and re-check the AGC. The radio is just great,

 Dave -
I recently installed the DSP and do not find that it sounds as if it is
through a pillow. This particular K2 has the best amplification and audio of
the 3 I have had - by FAR due to I believe some really judicious adjusting of
the AGC etc per all the discussions on the archive. I wonder if double
checking to make sure all audio potential etc etc is totally tweaked BEFORE
installing the DSP will improve the muffled effect you are getting. I find the
least degradation of the sound I've heard based on in shack comps with
7565ProII DSP and SCG's DSP and consequently very usable. Just my thoughts...

[Elecraft] AGC-Preset

2005-02-07 Thread Michael van Hauten
Dear All,
Page 47 in the (error) manual says: Adjust R1 on the control-board to 3.8 V.
I can only reach 3.6V at pin 1 of U2
( R1 is fully turned counter clockwise).
With no signal at the antenna (IF-Gain MAX) i have 3.58 V at pin 1 of U2.
With iF-Gain at MIN i have the 4.6V. This seems ok. But the AGC @Saturation
is only 4.6V, far away from the expected 6.9V.
The radio sounds good. The DC-voltage at U12, Pin 5 is only 3.8, not the
expected 5.0.
Is there anything wrong?

Ok, I'll try that asap, but I'm still curious as to why there's no relay
activity on 30m when forcing a tune operation: the antenna is not tuned
to 30m natively, only on 20m, but on 20m the atu clicks and on 30m it
doesn't. Well, I'll get back to you when I have tried the dummy load

Sorry, I wasn't being clear: I was talking about the power-supply mods,
such as cutting a trace to use the jack's builtin switch. The scenario I
had in mind is a melt-down caused by a short-circuit, not extended
operation at high power levels.

Re: [Elecraft] Which Audio Filter Kit?

2005-02-07 Thread lonnie.m.juli
I didn't think it was worth the trouble. I like having the KAF2 filters and
they're tight enough so that I can get around most hetrodynes. If conditions
were marginal, the de-noiser often made things worse, not better.

If you think about it: Sometimes you can copy weak signals best with the
filters in the radio wide open and the filter between your ears doing all the
work. I tried to like the DSP. I'm just more pleased with the KAF2.

RE: [Elecraft] AGC-Preset

2005-02-07 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Michael,

If you are unable to adjust the AGC Threshold to 3.8 volts or higher with
the RF gain control set fully clockwise, the first thing to check is the 8A
voltage supply rail. Checking it directly on RP6 pin 3 would be the best,
but if you can't get to that point with power on, check at the source U4
OUT. If that voltage is not close to 8 volts, that is the cause of your
problem.

Don't be concerned with all the other points until you are able to get the
voltage at U2 pin 5 up to at least 3.8 volts.

BTW, the 3.8 volts may be just a starting point - you should set the optimum
AGC Threshold after the receiver is working well - internal receiver noise
should not activate the AGC - and the point will vary from K2 to K2. I am
building 2 K2s at the moment and when I optimized the AGC, one ended up at
3.8 volts while the other was 3.65 volts.

[Elecraft] KPA 100

2005-02-07 Thread Kevin Stover

HI all.

I'm doing the test and alignment on the KPA 100. My trouble starts when
I try the SWR bridge null adjustment. No matter what I do with C1 I
can't get a 1.0-1 indication on the K2 LCD. When I adjust C1 the
indicated power out swings from low to high but the SWR doesn't change
at all.

Also, I'm using the dummy load in my MFJ-949E on the bypass side of the
tuner switch. I don't see a corresponding change in power out while
adjusting C1.

I've checked D16 and D17 and both are installed correctly. i've also
checked around T1 and R21 and R22 for signs of trouble but don't see
anything.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

[Elecraft] K2 40m Tx current drain

2005-02-07 Thread Neal Campbell and Sarah Ferrell

I am just at the 40m L1/2 alignment for my K2.

On rx with the lcd set at nite, I show 13.6v @ .18a.

Using an external analog wattmeter into a dummy load, I measure at 5
watts 12.9v and 1.8a. Also, the display shows the power output at 3.5w
instead of 5. When I tune the power output control so the external

Is this a sign of trouble? Why would there be a difference between the
