[Elecraft] low tune power with SSB module

2005-03-24 Thread Chris

Hello,

I posted a couple of days ago regarding a strange problem I had with low
power output when testing my KPA100. Well I soon discovered that the low
power was due to low drive from the K2.

Whilst investigating this I removed the SSB to access U10 etc., inserted
the links and the cap. Pressed Tune to investigate and my power was back
to normal. Re installed the SSB module and Power is down again.

The symtoms are that I can get about 2W on 40m rolling of to a 100mW, or
so, on 10m.

Mike, VP8NO, lent me his spare SSB module and that gives full power on
tune. His had firmware 1.07 mine is 1.08.

I started checking voltages around my module and discovered that you
have to press PTT to get the Tx readings that are listed in the voltage
table in the manual (it doesn't specifically tell you that so I thought
that Tune would do!). Whilst doing this I discovered that SSB is
delivering full power so it is only in tune mode that power is being
limited.

What exactly does tune do that interacts with the SSB module?

I read somewhere, in the archives for this list I think, that tune power
may be limited to 2W by some SSB firmware versions. Is that correct?

If there is a 2W limit on tune (20W I guess with KPA) what would be
causing this 2W to roll off to almost nothing at 10m?

Without the SSB module installed I can get good power on all bands. With
the SSB module installed and using the whistle test I can get good power
on all bands. So it's definitly only the tune mode that is affected.

Tune power override, doesn't make any difference.

I'm still using a manual ATU and I need a bit more juice to able to get
a good indication on my meter!

The good news from this is that there is nothing wrong with my KPA100 :-)

Cheers
Chris VP8BKF

RE: [Elecraft] Slug tuned coil installation

2005-03-24 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Mike,

Yes solder the cans, the inductors will not be properly shielded unless the
can is connected to ground - it doesn't take that much solder - and yes
solder both tabs.

Although, I am not new to kit building, it has been many years
since I have built anything. Thus, I have forgotten a few
things. Which, brings me to this question, In the installation
of slug tuned coils, is it necessary to solder the two(wide) legs
which are attached to the can/case of the coil?

I am wanting to think that I did this in the past. But, upon
looking at the two or three slug tuned coils that I have already
installed on the K2's RF board, I do not find that they
electrically connect to anything else. Thus, I am wondering if
it is really necessary to solder them. Since, it appears that
they are just used to hold the coil in place. And, the width of
the hole (around said legs) would take bunches of solder to fill.

RE: [Elecraft] low tune power with SSB module

2005-03-24 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Chris,

You may have a problem with CW as well as TUNE. Check voltages at SSB board
Q3 during TUNE or keydown on CW. You should have 7.5 to 8 volts on the
collector and near 2.4 volts on the base - the emitter should be about 0.2
to 0.3 volts lower than the base.
If there is no voltage on the collector, check D5 for proper orientation.
Also check capacitor C39 for good soldering and a proper path to P1 pin 7.
The path from P1 pin 12 through C42, Q1 and C39 is the route for the BFO
signal through the SSB board during CW (or TUNE) operation.

[Elecraft] Re: T1-K ATU kit and T1-FT817 cable are shipping

2005-03-24 Thread Dennis Payton
I received my T1 yesterday and built it last night. It went together
flawlessly and I'm going to love it. I've been wishing I had a small
automatic tuner like this and now I have one! A couple comments:

Positive - Now that I have the finished tuner in my hand, I can say it
exceeded my expectations. I especially wasn't expecting the flashing LED's
of the info feature to be easy to read, but they are.

Negative - Since the assembly manual is written for builders of all skill
levels, there are a lot of details and cautions that an experienced builder
may not need to hear. That made construction slower and a little more
confusing for me than the less detailed Steve Weber style of instructions,
which say something like, These parts go here, and those parts go there.

I guess I did have one problem after building it though. I didn't have the
rear of the battery all the way down against the bottom of the box when
installing it, and accidentally broke the battery retaining tab when I was
trying to push it down. It won't be a problem to shim the battery though -
especially since I only plan to replace it once a year, when I replace our
smoke alarm batteries!

Start to finish, the project took about six hours, so I'm going to need to
get caught up on some sleep tonight!

Just a small reminder to let you know that ECN 30 will be on tonight. Due to
low power operating - becoming 'frequency agile' is helpful, so look for me on
one of the following, and if we get QRM'd, we'll move to the next frequency on
the list.

10.102.7
10.107.2
10.112.7
10.117.2

I'll start looking for QNI around z.

Good going, Ken! Can't wait till I'm saying the same about #4834.

I've noticed a few notes regarding L31, and I'm not at that point yet in
my K2 build. It seems the concensus is that 12 uH should be used rather
than 10 uH in the notes I've read, so I wonder why the kitted component
was changed. Any recommendations on whether or should use 12 uH from
the start or better to try the supplied one first?

RE: [Elecraft] L31 10 uH vs 12 uH (was: K2 #4830 IS ALIVE)

2005-03-24 Thread Ken K3IU
Hi Mike:

Well, I don't know what the statistics are on the batch of crystals that are
being shipped, but I'd give the 10uH a try and see what you get. All you
need is 9.8. I had 9.5 and someone else I know had 9.7. However, I'd bet
that there are numerous K2s out there that came in = 9.8. So I'd
recommend installing what you have. If it doesn't quite make the grade, than
you can get a 12 uH from Elecraft. In the meantime, the marginal range
should probably work until you get the replacement from Elecraft. It is easy
to replace, but don't forget that you'll have to run CAL PLL after you put
the new one in and then re-do the CAL FIL after the CAL PLL.

GOOD LUCK Have Fun!!!

Re: [Elecraft] K1 Question

2005-03-24 Thread Sandy
My K1 was originally with the 4 band card which I configured for 40/30/20/15
meters.
Added a 2 band card modified for 160 and 80 meters. The KAT1 tuner works great
at 40
meters up
but isn't useful on 160 or 80 except and extremely narrow range of impedances.
Nevertheless the SWR bridge gives useful information at the two lower bands.

[Elecraft] sometimes, it's good to see smoke!

2005-03-24 Thread Lloyd Lachow
Let's say you've been trekking through deep snow at
a high elevation, cold and tired. Hungry, too. You're
heading for a hut, not sure you're on the right trail.
Then, suddenly - there it is! And, coming out of the
stovepipe - smoke! Good smoke.

Or you arrive at the annual picnic, to find all your
friends, a freshly tapped keg of Fuller's ESB...and
the delicious aroma of a hawg slowly cooking in the
smoker, which is emitting clouds of fragrant, good
smoke.

  But...lets pretend you're building a K2, and it's
time for Alignment and Test, Part I...smoke is about
the last thing you'd want to see, right?

Well, there I was, last night, about to do that
very thing. I pushed the button, and - no smoke. This
was a wonderful thing! And such a pretty display! As
the relays sang their clicking song of welcome, I
thought: I'm gonna love this rig, but it'll be tough
to say goodbye to building it.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 Question

2005-03-24 Thread Mike Morrow
Ron Polityka asked:

Have the 2 band board made for 80 17 meters and the
4 band board made for 40, 30, 20 15 meters. Then swap
them out in the field.

Hi Ron,

I have exactly the two filter board combinations that you mention.

It's no real trouble to swap out filter boards, even with the antenna tuner
installed. The standoffs *would be* the greatest aggravation, but you can fix
that with a technique suggested by Tom / N0SS years ago: Capture the two KAT1
PCB standoffs on their screws with a bit of thin rubber band material. Run it
through the stand off before screwing the screw through the standoff, then trim
off excess at each end. It works wonderfully. The only aggravating part
remaining is replacing the short screw that holds down the middle section of
the filter board. It might be worth leaving its lock washer off to simplify
things.

If you have the KBT1 battery installed, it can be difficult to get a firm grip
on the filter board to be removed because the KBT1 fits against the front edge
on the filter board. I no longer use the KBT1.

A very leisurely pace will allow board swaps in well less than 10 minutes.

My biggest qualms abut swapping boards in the wear and tear on the connectors
and nearby PCB traces, and protecting the un-installed filter board from damage.

Mike / KK5F

FCC Grants New US CW Coast Station License

The FCC has granted a license for a new, common carrier, class 1A CW coast

brought ex-RCA coast station KPH back to life.

The MRHS applied for the license to assure that US commercial Morse

time in many years that the FCC has granted a new license for this service.

The hours of operation for the station have not yet been determined. But

[Elecraft] intimidated

2005-03-24 Thread Robert Conley
Several times over the last couple of months during the building of
first my K1 (#1949) and then my KX1 ( #1056). I was intimidated by the
instructions in the manuals. First with the K1 and KAT1 that I finally
got the nerve to finish and install it today. The KX1 did a number on
me too when I read the manuals from a PDF down load before ordering. I
finally took the plunge and ordered it, built it in less than twenty
hours, then ordered the 30m mod. built and installed it earlier this
week before I tackled installing the KAT1 today. The manuals for both
radios are so beautifully written that construction of the K1 KX1 is
extremely easy. Wayne and Eric along with everyone at Elecraft are to
be commended on a job very well done. I look forward to building a K2

[Elecraft] WB3AAL Pulpit Rock Trip

2005-03-24 Thread Ron Polityka

Hello Everyone,

Ed, WA3WSJ and I will be hiking up to Pulpit Rock no matter what the
weather will be. I talked him into it the other day. :-)

We are going to have lunch at the Cabela's store and then hike up to the
site. That will be a treat with us walking into the store in our hiking
gear. Maybe I should walk in with my backpack and solar panel on. :-) Ed
and I could be on the air sometime between 18:00 and 19:00 UTC.

I will be using my K1 on 15, 20, 30 and 40 meter CW with the VBWFPA antenna.
This time I will have coax. :-) I will start out on 15 meters and listen
for Europe. If I have no replies to my CQ's I will jump to 20 meters and
then 40 meters. At 20:30 UTC I will be following the schedule that is posted
on Ed's web page. http://www.wa3wsj.com/files/PolarBear2005.html

Hope to work a lot of QRP'ers from the AT. My QSO count is at 420 from the
Appalachian Trail. Would be great to hit the 500 QSO mark tomorrow but I am
not counting on it. So if I have already talked to you before from the AT
and you hear me please stop by on the air and say hello. We will keep it
brief so I can work as many stations as possible.

It has been 5 years now since I have been going to the AT with my radios. I
have not missed one month since March 2000. Funny how time flies and the
Great people you meet on the trail and on the air.

72 and Thanks,

Well, the replacement voltage regulator for my KAT2 arrived today, and
finishing the project entailed taking the K2 apart, so I wasn't there.

[Elecraft] KAT2

2005-03-24 Thread Fred Jensen
This is primarily for Don, whose address I don't have, but read on.

DON: the 78L05 regulator arrived today. Once installed, the KAT2 loaded
my flag pole (I use it as a rx antenna sometimes) just fine -- relays
chattered for maybe 4 sec, made one QSO on 30m, flag flapping and all.
Apparently 11.7V on the rest of the devices didn't kill them.

ALL: In the process of installation, I found two unsoldered connections
in my K2 which was the first Elecraft thingy I built. It's been working
fine, but, after the new V-reg was installed in the KAT2, the tuner was
still dead. I am a turtle, and I count and check off every pin to be
soldered, and then check it off again when I have soldered it. Both of
these were obvious if you were looking at them. So much for the Turtle
Technique.

[Elecraft] T1 Arrives--Good News and Bad NewsQ

2005-03-24 Thread DYARNES
First the good news! My T1 arrived today!

Now the bad news! I have a new Bullmastiff puppy--3 months old--his name is
Linus, but I may rename him T1--I had the bags out of the box to inventory
parts--got a phone call--puppy (he's 30 lbs. already), stretches up to table
and grabs bag of parts--takes them out on the patio--proceeds to chew the bag
to bits! Parts all over the patio! I recovered most of the parts (I think),
but now an inventory is crucial! I wonder what the calorie count is for
radio parts! Any bets on whether I found ALL the parts

RE: [Elecraft] KAT2

2005-03-24 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Fred,

Great that you had success with just the replacement of the voltage
regulator. FB on the perormance of the KAT2 - yes it will load just about
any hunk of wire - its only weakness is in attempting to load very high
imedances such as an end fed half wave antenna. Keep that flag flapping.

BTW, I am not hard to find - try a Google search on 'W3FPR' and you will
find plenty of references. Fortunately a search on my name will reveal very
little - good for the current state of affairs with the spam generating
folks - I get more than I want as it is.

On teh missed solder joints - take comfort in knowing that you are not
alone - unsoldered or poorly soldered connections are the majority of the
problems that builders encounter. Even I miss a few at times, but when I
do, I usually do it big time - like failing to solder an entire IC - yes, I
solder in groups - big groups - I try to insert all the components on one
manual page before I solder things. Soldering through the 'forest of wires'
is a nuisance, but is easier for me in the long run. I hold to the rule
that I never clip an unsoldered connection - and that is my only salvation -
but then I have been doing this Elecraft stuff for over 5 years now - if you
are just starting 'don't try this at home'!

Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] Help Identify a Balun

2005-03-24 Thread Jeff Burns
I was given two baluns, but I have no information about them. They are
marked Ultra-Bal 2000 Model UV-1. Can anyone tell me what kind of baluns
these are?

I plan to order the parts for a new horizontal loop antenna on Monday. I
need a balun to transition from open line to coaxial cable. If the balun I
have will work I can scratch a new one off my shopping list.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Jeff,

It's a 5-KW coax balun made in about 1988 by DKP, which may or may not
still be in business. See this URL:

[Elecraft] Egad!! A Missing Capacitor

2005-03-24 Thread Mike Monger
Hi All,

I was working on the RF board of K2 4777 and found that capacitor C225 was
missing. A 390 pf, NPO type. I sent in a request for the missing part a few
minutes ago.

If any of you have had missing parts, how long does it normally take for
Elecraft to get one shipped off to you?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] K2 S/N 4786 doing well for first 24 hours!

2005-03-24 Thread vze3v8dt
Well, I'm not sure if the bands are just doing really well today or if
it is the new K2. I don't really operate much, or at least I hadn't in
the recent past, however that may all be changing now that the K2 is in
my life. Since I hadn't used the big rig for quite a while I don't
know how it compares really. I have had 8 QSOs in the past 24 hours on
20, 30 and 40m so far. Okay, yeah, big deal, most of you probably do
more than that, right? For my operating, that is a lot though (except
for when I'm in contest mode). I guess it helped that I was a bachelor
for tonight. More impressive, though, was what some of the QSOs were.
I worked a station on 30m in Hungary, my first DX with the K2! I got
about as good a signal report as he gave other people who had called
him, but then I was running nearly QRO at a full 5W output. Wait, it
gets better! I did work a few other stations on 20m and 40m. Then
later at night I heard the FT5 DXpedition on 40m but didn't feel like
trying to bust that pileup since I am not so confident with the rig yet
and since I haven't done any CW DX pileup busting in probably 15 to 20
years. But it was fun to be able to hear the FT5 station! I then
worked a station in Hungary on 40m and he gave me a 579 before he knew I
was only running 5W. I had heard him working a station in Panama, and
heard the Panama station sign off. I wasn't sure whose frequency it was
so I just dropped my callsign in there to see which one would come
back. I'd have been happy either way. Then I worked a station in OR
who was just above the noise (the Hungarian station was actually
stronger), but it was fun trying to pull him out. As soon as I got done
working him another station came back and said QRZ QRP? de W3AS Well,
I live in Allentown, PA and as strong as this guy was I figured he was
quite local as well. Turned out he was near Spokane, WA and running 80W
to a 2 element yagi (again, this is on 40m) up 80 feet. No wonder he
was so strong! He later lowered his power to 5W and I could still hear
him fine, at which point I lowered mine to 1/2 watt and he could still
here me okay too!

With that, I'm off to bed and will pack up the K2 for tomorrow to
operate from Pulpit Rock along the Appalachian Trail with the EPA QRP
Club. I'm scheduled to operate on SSB mostly so I'll use my FT-100 for
that but when I can operate CW I'll switch over to the K2.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Pre Filter

2005-03-24 Thread Stewart Baker
Hi Benny,

On the face of it your suggestion makes sense, for a little signal attenuation
get back the lost IMD performance. Is it as simple as that ?

I have copied this to the reflector, so that others more knowledgeable about
IMD
than I might comment.

 Stewart,

something KISS came across when playing with the prefilter idea and
 simulator.
Voltage response, input impedance and return loss were in my interest for
 close and
 large-band frequencies.

Put a 1,2 - 1,6k resistor across the filter input (between step-up and first
 fiter).
Or place 200 ohm across input of step-up.
This gives good large band termination for post-mixer amp and drops the
 signal 1 - 2dB instead of 5dB with resistive
attenuator. Then only part of pre-filter loss comes into play, and you can
 enjoy the good IMD.
 What say?
