[Elecraft] Spam bounce?
May be out of order on this reflector, but yesterday I had a mssage to post concerning a big trouble with my K2 SN 4498 and the following was all what I got in return...!!! But this morning turning it on, I just got a vigorous howl ( very low freq nois !). I turn it off, and on after a few second. The Rx start normaly and the noise start again after a few second. Re-turn off and tunr on and no howl and Rx is working correctly! The set was in CW mode so I turn down power (to abt 2/3 watts) and close the key... The result is correct on 1.8, 3.5, 7.0 but nil on the rest of the bands. Closing the key a little longer on 7.0 the rig goes to curent overange in abt 10/12 second and power fall down to zero. So power off, open the rig, remove the bottom cover and before removing the heat sink just check the resistance of driver and PAOn Q6 (driver) E to Gnd 1.3 ohm, B to Gnd 76/80 ohms, and C to Gnd > 500 ohms. On Pa C to Gnd > 600 ohms, B to Gnd 120/130 ohm E to Gnd 0 (it's normal!)They seems to be normals but any time I close the key I get High Cur and power out ZERO !! [Elecraft] SP0PAPA
Just worked SP0PAPA, special even station(s) in Poland commemorating the life of Pope John Paul II on 40m. The operator was working split and there was a pileup. I had just finished raising one end of my windom antenna a bit higher and brought the center back up since the winter winds are done getting the antenna settled. Nice WX here for doing some antenna work after work tonight. Finished the project just before dark. I figured that trying to break a pileup on 40m to Europe would be a good test. I called for about a dozen times and then heard my call come back. K2 Mojo! If anyone else has worked the station, the QSL is via SP3IQ. Re: [Elecraft] RE: Ear Buds and Headphones cushion substitutes
Hi Vic, The diameter of the cosmetic pads I have found is smaller, (slightly) than the Trimm type and Military Surplus phones I have used them on. I do wear glasses 100 per cent of the time, and these pads have not been a problem. They do not stick out forward of the ear enough to touch the glasses frame ear pieces, and they are soft enough to cushion the ear without placing undue pressure on the ear upon the glasses ear piece hooking over the ear. I find them entirely adequate, since the old style rubber foam ear pads are no longer manufactured, in the USA, as far as I can find out. You could cut the pads perhaps if your glasses have larger ear pieces. They are soft white foam that is easily handled with scissors. -Stuart K5KVH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I've tried this and the problem I have is that since the pads are between the phones and my ears, they just mash my ears against the earpieces of my glasses! What I need is something that will fit AROUND the ears, letting my head take the pressure rather than the ears. And of course they need to be soft enough to let the earpieces of the glasses through. Re: [Elecraft] RE: Ear Buds and Headphones cushion substitutes
I have found that some ear buds fit better if you switch them to the other ear, or turn them slightly so that the wire exits at an angle to the rear of the head. Maybe you can find a more comfortable position that way. On another headphone note: From time to time, I report on using "Cosmetic Sponges" as cushions for old fashioned headphones of the high impedance bakelite type. Besides Walgreens drug Store, I have found some of the local Dollar Stores carries 8 White sponge disks for $1.29. That would equip four headsets. Use double sided "Scotch" tape to affix the disk to the cover of the headphones. The phones can be worn for long hours of contesting in complete comfort using these improvised cushions. RE: [Elecraft] OP1 and CW filter gain difference, solved
Thanks all I checked T7, it is OK, so are the varcaps. My K2 seems OK I fiddled with the CW filter settings, changed the BW and it does indeed show the expected behavior, to much bandwidth > 1kHz, to little bandwidth < 200 Hz did show lower filter gain, so I just selected BWs which do not have as much attenuation of the signals as before, now the CW filter loss is abt 3 to 6dB rel to the OP1. I can live with that :-). 73 de TF3MA -- Marteinn SverrissonTF3MA Langitangi 2Internet: tf3ma [at] raunvis [dot] hi [dot] is 270 Mosfellsbær http://www.raunvis.hi.is/~tf3ma Iceland ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 feedline question
Hi Thom, One of my favorite antennas was the Double Extended Zepp, which I built at 340' long, center fed with 450 ohm ladder line and going to a balanced tuner (Johnson KW Matchbox). It worked on all HF bands. My tuner didn't cover 160m so I built a separate tuner for that band. The length on each side of the feedline is essentially 0.64 wavelengths (although before I knew what the antenna was officially called I designed it at 5/8 wavelengths on each side, or 0.625, I guess not taking into account some end effects of the wire or something, but close enough anyway). That dimension should be taken at the lowest wavelength you wanted to operate (for me it was for the DX window of the 75m band, but it still loaded and worked fine on 160m as well, being just over 5/8 wavenlength total length at 160m). How would I do that same antenna today? I'd probably have some sort of balun (4:1 Remote Balun from RadioWorks would be a suggestion) hanging up outside under the eaves and run coax from the ATU in the K2 to the balun and 450 ohm ladder line from there to the center fed double extended Zepp. Are there other options? Of course! That is the best part about antennas! Good luck narrowing down the field and have fun putting up the wire. 72/73, Mark, NK8Q K2 #4786 >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Date: Fri Apr 08 15:10:13 CDT 2005 >To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net >Subject: [Elecraft] K2 feedline question >Hi all, > > Well spring is in the air and old man's fancy turns to antennas. > > I have a K2 (s/n 1103) without the 100 watt amp and with the internal low > power ATU. RE: [Elecraft] OP1 and CW filter gain difference?
Marteinn, The CW filter design point is for a bandwidth of 400 to 600 Hz, and it may be that what you are seeing is normal - the high ripple with a bandwidth greater than about 1.2 kHz is quite normal. Greater attenuation does appear at narrow bandwidth, but if that area is important to you, you may want to experiment by changing the turns ratio of T7 a bit to see if it improves. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > > Vic and Stewart, Tanks for answering > > well, the ripple on the CW filter at 2kHz BW is abt 8db p-p. > > the gain difference when the CW filter is offset to 1.2kHz > (for digital modes) and its BW is 1kHz is abt -3dB relative to > the OP1 filter (not bad?). > > with the same at 200Hz BW the gain is -10dB relative to the OP1. > > Maybe this is normal, > > 73 de TF3MA > -- > ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] OP1 and CW filter gain difference?
Marteinn, The CW filter has a greater signal loss than the OP1 filter mainly because of it's varicap variable bandwidth design. My K2 has about a 6dB loss relative to the OP1. Your CW filter loss of 10dB may be a bit high. It seems that the OP1 filter has +10dB more gain than the CW filter I have the 2.5kHz OP1 filter mod and the stock CW filter on 2.4kHz. Measurements are done on 7 MHz band on LSB. I did the measurements with AGC off, using noise gen and audio spectrum analyzer. Is this normal? Should I look for some bad X-tals or varicaps in the CW filter? 73 de TF3MA PS. same results if I unmodule the KSB2, the gain is still low. -- Marteinn SverrissonTF3MA Langitangi 2Internet: tf3ma [at] raunvis [dot] hi [dot] is 270 Mosfellsbær http://www.raunvis.hi.is/~tf3ma Iceland ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: 3-day delivery from Aptos, CA to Laval, QC
Yves, That is UNBELIEVABLE ! Did the parcel go through Canada Customs, or somehow get bypassed? Everytime I order anything it takes 14 to 20 days to arrive, even small envelopes of parts. Did you use US Mail Service? 73, Bob VE3XM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] K2 X3 installation?
I'm building my K2, #4759, in page 53. The fifth step in page is: "Install the BFO crystals X3 and X4 (near J7). Important: trim X3's leads, and fold them down flat against their pads, before soldering. Then use a minimal amount of solder. This is necessary to avoid interference between X3 and L33 in a later step." I am not 100% sure what should I do. I have to cut the leads before soldering. Is it right to leave about 1 mm length of both leads which then protrude on the bottom of the board. Then you should make a sharp 90 degree right angle to the leads. And then fill the hole with solder? Rolf Moberg oh6kxl ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] KX1 Receiver test and alignment question
I am finishing a KX1 and have a question. When tuning the radio, there is a LOT of DDS hash when turning the tuning knob. I am just finished with the 20 meter and 40 meter testing. Will this always be there? Is there a way to reduce this? Jess EACH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] RE: Ear Buds
Hi Craig, The problem with ear buds is that they do not fit my ears. I have tried many of them. They hurt terribly. Also I have to press them forcibly against my head to get the best around. That's why I will try the Koss type that have the narrow sound pipe and the compressible foam around them. I guess they are truly in-the-ear types. I also heard that they sound much better too. [Elecraft] FS - KIO2 serial port for K2 transceiver.
I have a KIO2 serial port for the Elecraft K2 transceiver for sale. This one has not been hooked up to a computer so I really can't verify if it works. All of the voltages and checks are correct by the instruction manual. I have no reason to believe that anything is wrong with it. My computer doesn't have a serial port so I don't need it. I would like to get $50 for it. Included is the instruction manual and serial port cable. Please contact me off list if interested. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] F/S Canon S10 Dig. Camera
Folks, $90 shipped CONUS--includes camera complete with all the manuals and cables; Canon DK110 power supply/batt-charger; a new battery; and 2 compact flash cards one 8Mb the other 64 Mb. Everything is in near new condition. This is a great camera for the many TTF events coming up. The S10 is a 2.1 megapixel camera and takes great pictures. I used this camera for years to take pictures posted to the web--a good example is my Rock-Mite build: http://users.frii.com/rwc/r-m/ A review of the S10 can be found here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons10/ And pictures of what I'm selling are here: http://users.frii.com/rwc/s10/ Recent QRP-L posts motivated me to purchase a new digital camera so the trusty S10 is now excess to my needs. -- 73, Rod N0RC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
