Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for June 6th, 2005

2005-06-06 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Morning Kevin,

Was on at 0230Z or thereabouts and heard Tom N0SS for sure, RST 229 through
very strong Russian SSB QRM off the back. The Russians were not amused by my
CW, don't blame them, but fortunately I know one of them reasonably well (he
runs 2kW into a 4 element 40m monobander at 30m plus up), so I might live.
Other QRM also, and conditions to the USA not good at all. Sorry to report
that no other ECN check-ins heard this time.

73,
Geoff

[Elecraft] Low power on 20m using the KPA100 option

2005-06-06 Thread Renardy, Martin

Dear all,

last weekend I finished the KPA100 option, which is causing a little
problem. Everything
Is running well except power on 20m, where I just reach 50 Watts.

The QRP output is not affected, so I am quite shure that the RF path to
the antenna
through the LPF is ok. Just to be shure I have checked all inductivities
and capacities
of the 20m filter. They are ok including the used core types of the
inductivities.

Somehow I am getting the impression, that on 20m the PA doesn't get
sufficient driver
Power. My signal reports on 20m have been ok, except the missing
50Watt. This issue
drives me realy crasy, because everything else is working ufb.

Any suggestions?

My K2 is S/N 1641, but as you note, I was running a Yaesu FT-847 at 50w
or so, both to make sure I penetrated the substantial QRN and also so I
could use my KAMPlus to back up my RX follow the net.

If you are getting 10 watts output when you set the power control to 10
watts, check the current draw at this power level by tapping Display.
You should be drawing less than 3 amperes in this condition. Check also
at 11 watts, with the KPA100 on. It shouldn't be much higher. If it
is, you may have problem (2) below.

I found two problems in my K2/100 which caused slightly (in my case)
reduced output on 20 meters:

1) the bandpass filter tuning trimmers were both at maximum capacity.
Adding a few pf in parallel with them allowed the QRP portion of the K2
to develop more drive for the KPA100 with less current draw.

2) There is a known issue with some new KPA100s that the amplifier
requires abnormally high drive on 20 and sometimes 30 meters. This
causes high current draw in the low-power stage and inability to reach
full output. Gary at Elecraft was helpful to me about this

[Elecraft] Re: KPA100 in EC2 question - any reverse steps?

2005-06-06 Thread Geert Jan de Groot
My question is this. If I follow the KAP100 manual will I have to
reverse any of the steps from this point on if I will be using the amp
externally? Good advice on the reflector seems to be to build the amp,
remove the current K2 top with the battery and AT etc and check out all
amp functions as if the final product would be a K2/100.

I have (this is from memory, so pls check):
- installed an IC socket instead of the RS232 driver, and left
the driver chip out. The KPA100 can't do any RS232 conversion
in this config, and letting the chip out makes cabling a little easier.
- Left out the speaker and replaced it with a piece of black plastic,
again, no need, and I'm saving the LSP as I'm considering putting
the LSP in front of the KAT/KPA box; the LED display isn't very
informative and I'd like to see what sound I get with speaker in front.
(Eric says won't be good and I haven't tried).
- Not installed the DB9 connector on the KAT100. The KAT100/KPA100 box
only needs one DB9 connector, the other connector enclosure hole
is filled up with a blind panel.
- The KAT100 gets it's AUXbus signalling from the flatcable between
  KPA100 and KAT100.

Should you ever want to install the KPA100 in the K2 itself,
then you can just socket the RS232 chip. The KAT100 is
useless w/o KPA100 counterpart, but in my case I've *never*
felt a need to transplant the KPA100; I don't even have the right
shielding for it.

Hallo Vic,

Many thanks for the info. I thnink I am dealing with issue number 2).

By now I am quite shure that the driver part of KPA100 option is
draining power on 20/30m avoiding the last stage to reach full
Power.

I am going to ask Gary.

Re: [Elecraft] Finally managed QNI on ECN on 40m

2005-06-06 Thread Tom Hammond

Hi Rich:

I heard you just fine here in Amarillo this evening. This was the first
time I checked in also. I just finished a home brew 1/4 10m vertical this
afternoon. The tuner in my 1000mp(running about 10 watts out) tuned it
just fine on 40m. Tom was S9+10 but he said I had some QSB on my signal.

Signals here were often pretty marginal... not only due to QSB but also due
to some pretty severe QRN... nasty stuff... I apologize to ANYONE I might
have missed... at times I could hear a signal I though might have been
calling, but could never pull any intelligence out of the noise, and when
I'd ask for a possible relay, I'd generally just hear more noise... sorry.

Tom, what type of antenna are you running? You were very loud.

Running a K2/100 at about 90W output into an inverted vee with the apex at
72', running N-S, so you were generally off the ends of the antenna.

I wonder if 40m was going long early, hence my weak signal.

Undoubtedly... happens just about every year this time G.

73,

Tom

Similar to cap C6 on page 57, do I install cap C45 in the outer two of

The marked outline suggests that, but that middle hole seems placed
ideally for the lead spacing of the supplied part.

RE: [Elecraft] k2 s/n 4886, cap C45, page 65

2005-06-06 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
I just looked at a K2 RF Board and it leads me to think you are trying to
place C45 in the wrong spot - there are only 2 holes where C45 is to be
inserted - the position is to the rear of the board from the 'C45' label and
right next to the relay.

Yes, spread the legs of the small capacitor to fit the hole spacing. That
action is necessary for several of the capacitors in the bandpass filter
area.

I wonder if someone can explain if there is any difference between the

least they look quite the same).

[Elecraft] KX1 Question

2005-06-06 Thread Paul Clay
I finished my KX1 and it seems to be operating
just fine, but I've notice something I've not
noticed on my K2, or on my ham receivers for that
matter. If I insert a long random length wire
into the KX1 I don't hear receive too many
signals; advance or retarding the RF gain has
little audible effect in the headphones. But,
when I also attach a wire to the outside of the
BNC connector and then to a ground, the receiver
comes alive with signals.

At first, I thought this had something to do with
running the unit off batteries vice my Astron
power supply - till I realized (by turning off
the Astron but leaving the KX1 plugged into the
power supply, which is grounded; then by
disconnecting the PS but connecting a ground wire
to the outside of the BNC connector), that its
just having the unit attached to some kind of
ground. So, does this sound normal or have I
perhaps miswired something? (Must be a
noncritical mistake if I did, cause every
function on the KX1 seems to work FB.)

Now to build the 30m module and the ATU ...

Thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 Question

2005-06-06 Thread Leigh L Klotz, Jr.

Paul,
This is normal. You need two wires for your antenna. If you have the
antenna tuner option, you can use the Elecraft suggestion of the
following: hook a 16, 24, or 33ft wire to the ground side for 20/30/40,
and a 24-28ft wire to the center conductor. The Pomona BNC to binding
post adapter makes this convenientthere is a part number in the
manual. Then tie a hex nut to the hot wire and throw it in a tree and
put the other wire on the ground. (You may get away with shorter wires
for ground, but these are convenient sizes for putting in the air as
well...putting both wires in a tree works, too.)

Almost any wire will do, but Teflon-coated silver plated wire is often
available from surplus places, and is excellent. Or try thewireman.com
for other nice wire.

73,
Leigh/WA5ZNU.
