[Elecraft] ANNOUNCMENT: QRP-ARCI(sm) SILENT KEY MEMORIAL CONTEST

2005-08-18 Thread Jeff VA3JFF
Good Day everybody!

Please note that the BUBBA contest was inadvertently scheduled in a
manner that conflicted with the 2005 running of the SK Memorial Contest.
The organizers of the BUBBA event have apologized and modified their
contest exchange to match the exchange of the SK Memorial Contest. A
Contest TWOFER so to speak. The sending of the temperatures that is the
basis of the BUBBA contest has been made optional, but please be
courteous and comply with any requests for temperatures from BUBBA
operators.

Thanks Everybody.

2005 SILENT KEY MEMORIAL CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT

This contest celebrates and honors the QRP luminaries who no longer
answer CQ's. Those generous people who graciously donated to the QRP
community their time, effort and knowledge to advance the premise that
more fun could be had using less than 5 watts. Some were irascible and
some were even considered curmudgeons but when you took a keen look at
their accomplishments and listened to those who knew them well you
discovered truly wonderful people who would give you their last diode.
The people we are celebrating are well known among the QRP Community.
Some passed recently and some have enjoyed their reward many years. They
are not forgotten for their accomplishments live on either on the bands,
the internet, through published works or organizations that benefited
from their largess. This contest celebrates ALL SK's who now call CQ
from above, where all sigs are 599 and all contacts QSL 100%. Celebrate
the many SK’s that we have known and loved in years past.

I have to second that! Probably along with 5000 other happy customers.
When I first built my K2 in 1999 my eyes and brain were fine, but now when
building the Kio2, KPA100, Kat100, KDSP2 etc, etc, ...well I made a whole
lot of mistakes and blew a lot of parts. I got to know the Elecraft
technical staff very well ;o). I got to the point where whenever I blew a
part or something didn't work, I would not worry in the least since I knew
that when I called the next day they would set me straight and supply me
with the proper replacement parts.

Rest assured that anyone can build a K2 and not to worry about getting it to
work. With this list, and Elecraft staff it’s a done deal.

RE: [Elecraft] Power Supply

2005-08-18 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Stan,

If the voltages are ALWAYS exactly the same, you could be OK, but if the
voltage sags on either supply, the one with the higher voltage will try to
feed into the lower voltage supply just as if it were another load. What
happens next depends on the exact power supply design. I would surmise that
for one thing, connecting two supplies in parallel will possible defeat the
foldback current limiting.

It would be much better and safer IMHO to use 2 distribution boxes - unless
you have one piece of gear that requires more current than the Astron can
handle by itself.

If I were going to attempt to parallel 2 supplies, I would check that the
design (mainly the protection circuits) allows them to work together
properly and definitely would NOT attempt to parallel 2 different supplies.

[Elecraft] Elecraft Support the Best!!

2005-08-18 Thread Michael E. Dobson
I know I'm preaching to the choir here but once again Elecraft has proven
they have the best customer support in the world!

After a recent portable operation with my K2 and KPA100/KAT100 in an EC2 I
returned to find that the K2 would no longer control the amp and tuner. A
quick swap of the QRO and QRP lids isolated the problem to the KIO2 in the
K2. A check of the email archives suggested one of the subminiature RFCs
was likely the problem. A quick check with the DMM showed that L1 on the
AUX2 board was open. This is the 12V control line for remote connected
devices. A quick email to Elecraft and Richard verified this was the cause
of the problem. I sent back asking if this RFC was susceptible to failure
due to high current when used with the remote KPA100. He wrote back and
said yes and forwarded a copy of Lyle's (KK7P) article on remoting the
KPA100 which specifically recommends replacing the subminiature RFC with a
torroid wound on an FT23-43 core similar to L5 in the KIO2.

I was all set to order one from Elecraft when Paul, Gary and Scott each
sent emails telling me that they were sending me a couple of cores and some
wire. Are these guys great or what? I had also suggested they consider
changing the kit to replace the subminiature RFC on the AUX2 board with a
torroid version and it sounds like they will be doing that soon. What
other company provides such service. Outstanding! They truly are the best
in the world for customer service.

Unless Elecraft doesn't offer it, all gear in my shack will be Elecraft!

A few things to consider:

1) A 20 amp power supply will run the K2/100 with current to spare. My
K2/100 runs 16 to 18 amps from my Astron 20M.

2) Large supplies (even the 20 am, but especially one like a 50 amp) can be
very dangerous! While you won't get a shock from 13 vdc, they require all
the care you'd exercise working with an automobile battery. Shorts can cause
instant fires. Hot, molten metal spraying, splattering and dribbling all
over the place from a short can burn lots of holes in things, including your
own body and eyes. Shorts tend to become instantly welded in place and if
it's not good enough to cause the crowbar circuit to trip, the power supply
will keep dumping current into the circuit. An RS 50 supply will dump 50
amps into a 0.3 ohm short nonstop. Fuse everything and be careful just the
same.

3) You might get more amps for your buck by buying two or three smaller
supplies than one big supply, and thereby be less likely to experience a
total failure if a supply dies on you.

Quite true, Tom. And that's why I said one must be careful with a
high-current supply. It's a lot harder to trip that crowbar circuit on a big
supply!

As I pointed out, a 13.8 volt, 50 amp supply will deliver full current into
a 0.3 ohm load WITHOUT OVERLOADING! That's 690 watts that can cause a lot of
heat in short order, and it won't even trip the crowbar.

Where I've found some ops get a nasty surprise is that they've become used
to seeing the crowbar kill the output when they accidentally short out a 5
or 10 amp supply, but when they do that with a bit of solder or wire on a 50
amp circuit, they're met with a face full of molten copper, solder or
whatever it was that got across the circuit and the power supply barely
hums...

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supply (WAS: New amp)

2005-08-18 Thread Tom Hammond
Not to take issue with Ron's comments... they are all appropriate, however
one thing I think which may have been missed, or at least glossed over, is
the fact the Astron supplies include a very good FOLDBACK CURRENT LIMITING
circuit which, if directly shorted (e.g. HOT lead directly to GND) will
instantly reduce the output current (and the voltage) to nearly zero with
little or no damage to the supply, the attached equipment, OR to the
cabling (or user).

This having been said, as with just about any P/S which included this type
of current limiting, if only a partial short (e.g. low resistance, but not
quite a dead short) appears across the output, the P/S will attempt to
provide as much current as it can.. until it reaches that 'trip point'
internally set at which it then thinks it sees a dead short and reverts the
foldback current limiting. So, if you place a really heavy load across such
a p/s, it WILL try to honor your request, so to speak.

All too often, I've (accidently) shorted together the "+" and "-" leads of
my Astron VS35M (35A) supply. The only thing I hear is a momentary 'tick'
when the wires touch, and the I see the voltage and current drop to zero...
removing the short brings everything back to normal.

This is definitely NOT something you'd want to do with a P/S you weren't
ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN has foldback current limiting. For, as Ron stated so
eloquently, BAD THINGS CAN (AND WILL) HAPPEN!!!

Re: [Elecraft] K2 tinny speaker

2005-08-18 Thread Stuart Rohre
Craig,
this comes up from time to time. Check the speaker mounting for the screws
being overly tight and distorting the speaker frame. Or check that the
frame is not bent or warped. You have to dismount the speaker to check
that.

Don't overly tighten the speaker mounting screws when you replace it.
Sometimes, pressing two fingers near the voice coil will remove distortion
showing that the voice coil is either under tension or is warped in its
centering in the magnet field.

Most of these cases turned out to be too much torque in mounting the speaker
hardware to the top plate.

I can now see the filter pass band and move the peak around using c20, but I

This seems a bit low. Where should I look, or do I just have a recalcitrant

frequency.

Not to take issue with what Ron says at all.
I have been using an RS-50M for quite a while now.
Very reliable and built to last.
Nothing scarry about it.
Yes, you do need to be aware of what you are using and take all the
precautions.

Does anyone know what the power supply requirements are going to be for
the elecraft amp when it is ready for sale? I have to replace mine now
and figure I might as well buy one big enough to handle it as I plan to
get one when it becomes available.

[Elecraft] K1 BFO alignment

2005-08-18 Thread Paul Barlow
I'm building a K1 to go with my K2 and KX1! The receiver is working and
aligned, but I have a question about BFO alignment. I usually use a side
tone pitch of 700 Hz, but I don't seem to be able to adjust the BFO trimmer
c20 to get that high a note centred in the filter pass band. Am I aiming for
the impossible, or should I have another go? I could always reduce the side
tone pitch on my other rigs and get used to a lower one, I understand that's
the way many experienced ops go.

2005-08-18 Thread N2TK, Tony
If I remember correctly the power supply is included. It is a switching
supply. With the smaller amp it is built-in. With the larger amp it is
external.

I seem to remember that it weighed a ton or two - either it had a dirty
great big PSU built in or my mind is off on a jaunt of its own again. Looked
absolutely brilliant, drool factor was very high.

[Elecraft] KX-1 #1204 Operational

2005-08-18 Thread Coote, Jay
#1204 is up and running without too much difficulty, other than the
builder making a "rosin joint" at one of the relays which was quickly
resolved. I made a few contacts up to 1500 miles away on 10 and 14 MHz,
using 1.5 watts (internal batteries) and a Barker & Williamson AC 1.8-30
broadband antenna. This antenna while a great 1.6-30 MHz antenna for
100-watts and higher, MARS, military and allband use- is probably 6 dB
down from a center-fed doublet or end-fed wire of similar shape... Still
beats a short mobile whip though. The audio with the adjustable
crystal filter sounds better than a comparison IC735 and an IC728, both
with "CW Narrow" filters. The 600-Hz offset and sidetone is a lot
easier for the ear and the brain to make out- compared to the 800-Hz
sidetones and offsets in the Icoms and some other models. Now, the
final part- choosing some good earbuds and a Pelican or other box for
briefcase/suitcase/glove-box.
