[Elecraft] KX1 Carrying Case, WAS: K2 esthetics mod
Is such an elaborate carrying case necessary? To carry my KX1 around, I use a plastic toolbox I bought on sale at Ace for 5 bucks. To cushion the KX1, I set it on some of the pink bubble wrap that Elecraft used to package the kit. This works pretty well, and there's plenty of room in the toolbox for tools, a battery pack or small AC supply, the antenna, headphones, etc. 73! Dan KB6NU === President, ARROW Comm. Assn. [Elecraft] Re: K2 output power and external amps.
Hi Bill, I just went though this last week with my K2/100 driving a SB200. I was able to minimize this (but not eliminate it) by increasing R99 (on BOTTOM of main board...I spent about a half hour looking for it on the top!) . See this tech tip: http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/Power_Control_Mod.html I put a trimpot on mine, to temporarily seek the right value (replaced with fixed resistor after experimentation) and I ended up with something like 680 ohms as I recall. It didn't eliminate the issue...and indeed it appears on mine not to be POSSIBLE to eliminate it, but it's better, and I am able to tune the SB200 without much trouble. The K2/100 and the SB-200 make a fine DXing station!! John K5MO ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Re: Elecraft Digest, Vol 16, Issue 31 -- Toroid Use and History
What is the theory, or greater breadth of physics about toroid transformers? When did they come about, and what was the logic in replacing “C” or “E” frames (for non-RF applications). I had an old Uti-Com Communications radio that used a toroid switcher, and many other aspects of the radio were of quite modern design for its time frame. It even used a strip-line of 6360’s as buffer/multipliers, one as the driver, and two as the final. I saw a transformer design once for an “intrinsically safe” isolator for “DC ” analog lines, and the toroids used in this “phased switcher/rectifier” were covered with ferrite covers. I also seem to remember that design in the Western Electric 247B tone decoder. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Yes, I dispensed with the trimpot and went directly to 1 K for R98. This has made the shifts considerably smaller, but they are still bothersome. I'm going to try a larger value, such as 1.5 or 2 k next time I have the K2 apart. I made need to make some changes to T1 and T2 in order to avoid decreasing the overall TX gain. [Elecraft] Recharging gell-cell from car battery.
I put together a battery pack using three 17 Ah. batteries, packed into a nice cooler - makes a nice package, which weighs 39 lbs. total. I've installed a cigarette lighter outlet, and have a cable for the K-2 - it is really handy. I would like to be able to recharge it while driving, using the cigarette lighter, which is my question. If I were to plug a double male plug - one to the car's outlet, and the other to the battery pack outlet, would that recharge the battery? Do I need some type of controller? If so, Fry's has a 7 amp controller for use with their large solar panels - would that work in my situation? Thanks in advance for any light that can be shed on my battery questions. BTW, I'm using an inverted vee, supported by a 40' Wonderpole, fed with ladder-line, to a LDG 1:1 or 4:1 balun, with my K2/100 the performance is terrific, and at the campground, there was zero noise, which is a huge change from the S7 or so noise I get at my home QTH. [Elecraft] RE: MFJ HI-Q Loop 1788 Will not stay on frequency.
Ken W0CA wrote: time. My problem is the antenna will not stay on frequency. It will tune on any frequency easily but the only time it will stay on frequency is in the middle of the night with no wind. I talked to MFJ and Tom recommended I tighten the spring on the capacitor. I did and it improved but again this week end I saw it jump and drift. I had it tuned up on 14.058 and it dropped down to 14.007. Another time it jumped from 14.058 to 14.076. I know others I have one of these (now in storage) and that spring arrangment is IMO a kludge. When I got mine, the shaft was misaligned and it didn't even work. One way to deal with its loose tuning is to always tune past the desired frequency then come back in the direction (I forget which) which results in less frequency change afterwards. That said, this antenna is very narrow, and it is neither temperature compensated nor digitally stabilized. Mechanical vibration and temperature changes WILL throw tuning off, and we should be prepared to live with it. Remember, an old Heathkit VFO would easily drift 100 Khz if we hung its coil out where the loop is. Just beep the tune switch and keep going.. [Elecraft] Another limited space antenna advice
Dear all After reading the last posts with different proposals to solve the antenna setup in a limited space scenario of one of the list members I decided to ask as well for advice. I am quite sure that I will get good ideas that perhaps will change my mind. The scenario and past experiences are as follows: Location: small village in the mountains (about 4000feet high) and with strong wind storms from time to time (a wind which is called right here tramuntana) Past experiences: I had to disassemble 2 consecutive vertical antennas (CC R7000 and R7) that were about to break (no possibility to guy them). The lower element was absolutely bent. With both verticals I enjoyed quite a lot of DX just running 2-3 watts (I only operate QRP)and nice chats on 40m with local stations although in my log there are a couple of 2xQRP contacts on that band with USA stations. Anyway, after disassembling the R7, I started to think about a feasible alternative to be able to operate from the weekend QTH in Pardines. My final thoughts that I would like to share with the list members asking for advice and recommendations are as follows. Imagine the roof of the small house as a trapezoidal shape (Top view). The lower side of the trapezoid measures 25,4 feet, the left side (almost vertical)about 15 feet, the right side (almost vertical as well)about 23,3 feet and finally the top side of this trapezoid sloping from the right to the left is about 25,6 feet. On the top left hand corner of the trapezoid there is a tower base with small tower element (just 5 feet high) which acts as a support for a rugged mast where in the past were settled the verticals. The path for the feedlines to the attic is just near the base of the tower. I have currently 2 RG-214 feedlines about 40 feet long. One is used with a 6m GP and the other one is free. Not too much room for other cables. After thinking for a while about alternatives I ended with 2 complementary antennas. On one hand a fiberglass vertical marine antenna about 26 feet able to stand the strong winds of the zone, with an automatic antenna tuner just at the base (I recently built an LDG QRP tuner inside a waterproof case). The main drawback would be that according to the situation of the house I would be able to arrange some radials only to the right of the radiator and with a maximum angle between them of around 120 degrees. Although I am not able to simulate the behaviour, I believe that this antenna would be useful to work with reasonable performance on 40, 30 and 20m, but the radiation angle above those bands would be really a compromise(??). The complementary antenna I thought about was an horizontal pseudo-rectangular loop with an overall length about 75 feet and about 9,8 feet above the roof. The horizontal loop would be fed on the top left corner with about 50 feet of 300 Ohm slotted ribbon to a Z-11 tuner in the shack. According to the literature I have been reading, it seems that the loop would be useful on 20 and above with probably low radiation angles on the upper bands (10,12 and 15). When analysing how to feed the vertical marine whip I thought about 2 other possibilities. The first one was to throw away the remote atu and just feed the vertical and radials with 300 Ohm ribbon. An intermediate solution would be to feed the vertical and radials with about 13-14 feet of 300 Ohm ribbon to the remote atu but inside the attic, just at the point where the feed lines enter the attic.(I would arrange another 50 Ohm feedline inside the attic). With this approach the outer RG-214 feedline would be free for another antenna. One of the main constraints is that the feedlines path to the attic is really narrow and I have still to check if the control cable for the remote ATU will fit and travel free inside the plastic tube going from outside to inside.(that is why I thought about the alternative of using 300 Ohm ribbon). I hope that the scenario will be clear and would appreciate any comments or suggestions that for sure will improve the proposed setup. I must apologise for being so long with the description and to be using such a huge bandwidth of a list devoted to our little gems (KX1, K1 and K2). I hope that my request will be helpful as well to others facing similar limited space constraints, but in order to avoid too much traffic regarding this matter on the list, I would appreciate your comments or suggestions off the list unless the list moderator feels that the information and feedback will be helpful to other list members. Many thanks in advance for your patience, kind cooperation and help. [Elecraft] Seattle K2 calibration
Hi, This is my first post to the list. I wondered if there are any people in the Seattle area with experience of calibrating a K2? I have just finished building mine and am looking for a more experienced handhold to get me through calibration. I think my system is working but I have ended up with a left over 104 ceramic cap for which I can't find a home on the PCB and am finding the calibration instructions don't have much impact on what appears to be a very poor 40m reception. In other words, I think I may have a problem with my K2. However, I live in a basement apartment with no decent antenna so my environment is sub-sub-optimal! If there is anyone in the Seattle area with more experience than the zero experience that I have, I'd really appreciate some guidance. Thanks!
