Re: [Elecraft] KX1 on AAAs or Lithium Polymer?
I would be really interested in the 8 triple A's NiMH with a charge controller. This with a an extra backpanel would make it easy to choose between time and power. 73 Nick PAØNCV We've located a 4-AAA cell battery holder that would fit inside the KX1 (one at each end of the bottom cover, as with the present AA holders). 8 cells would provide 10 or 12 volts, giving you significantly more power output than 6 of the same cells (as much as 4 watts). The tradeoff would be in battery life. AAA-size NiMH, alkaline and lithium cells provide around 1000 to 1250 mA-hours, or around half as much as similar high-capacity AA cells. Another option would be to use a small lithium polymer battery. 11 volts at up to 1450 mA-hours or so might be possible, although these batteries are very expensive. AAAs might be preferable in a pinch because you can buy them anywhere. In the field, you can borrow triple-As from flashlights or other portable electronic devices. The difference in weight between 8 triple As and a LiPo battery is probably only couple of ounces, so weight is not likely to be the primary criteria. You'd probably get five to eight hours of casual operation with NiMH, LiPo, or lithium cells, which are preferable to alkalines because of their flat discharge curve. Of course you could recharge NiMH or LiPo cells in the field with a small solar panel. (Has anyone tried using 8 AAA cells with the KX1?) We could (in theory) create a new bottom cover option for the KX1 that would include two 4-cell AAA holders or a LiPo battery, plus a charge controller that would run from the KX1's DC input jack. The battery holders and charge controller components could be soldered to a thin PCB module that runs the full length of the bottom cover. In the case of AAAs, we'd include a switch to select rechargeable or non-rechargeable batteries. You might be able to recharge while operating, although this would have to be tested, since some charge controller generate significant noise. Any input on such a product would be appreciated. If there were significant interest, we'd try to have it ready early next year. 73, Wayne N6KR ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Wayne : I attempted to do exactly what you have with AAA cells but I ran into difficultly sourcing AAA holders that would fit on the additional KX1 bottom cover that I purchased for this project. I may however. have been trying to squeeze 10 cells in, I can't quite remember. Once thing I have discovered is that AAA Lithium cells seem to be more expensive than the AA ones ! At 5 to 8 hours of operation that doesn't make AAA Lithiums very cost effective. The problem with NiMH cells is the lower voltage, plus the rather rapid self-discharge rate. I'm not very familiar with LiPo technology so I don't know how it fares in this respect. My vote goes for the LiPo pack. I think in the long run it would prove to be a more cost effective solution. Users could always fall back to the standard back cover with AA cells in the event of longer duration outings. Being able to charge on-the-fly with a small Solar Panel would be a great idea. BTW, I have a small 5 W Coleman panel that folds into about the same space as a small hardcover book, it would be perfect for this application. I think that Paul W0RW has being using his own homebrewed LiPo pack quite successfully for a while with his KX1. I for one would certainly welcome an alternate internal power source for the KX1 that would allow higher power out for a shorter time period than the standard 6 X AAs. Most of my portable and /PM outings are less than a day in duration. This would be great, especially for KX1 /PM operation as it would mean one less wire (no external battery pack) to get tangled. Michael VE3WMB P.S. How does LiPO technology do in cold weather ? I am assuming it holds up fine like non-rechargable Lithium cells, otherwise Paul W0RW wouldn't be using it in CO during the winter ;-) . ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Alex OZ9AEC Hello Alex, Two things to tell you that may apply and help. One, you won't need Hamlib for the Marote and Xlog combination. Marote sends QSO info directly into Xlog. Second, if you happen to use SuSE, they put qmake in a place outside the usual path. You can get complacent with the excellent K2 performance but a good contest weekend reaffirms just how good it is. I haven't really been chasing Qs in this one but having fun comparing the K2 with my other radio, an ICOM 706Mk2G, a nice enough BC band and SWL radio. With a really crowded band the K2 sounds clean between individual signals and shows no tendency to overload whereas the 706 (with optional 250Hz filter) just sounds continuously muddy with a significantly elevated noise floor. Signals that are solid copy on the K2 can be totally covered by the noise. My favorite K2/706 comparison is when W6YX, 3 miles by crow from my QTH, is pointing NE from its hilltop right down my throat. The 706 simply collapses and is unusable for signals less than about 25kHz away whereas the K2 doesn't even know he's there until you get within about 2kHz. [Elecraft] Re: KX1 on AAAs or Lithium Polymer?
Funny, I was just looking at external battery pack possibilities for my KX1 last night. I had clipped out a QST article by AD5X (March 2005) about taking two 7.2v R/C type NiMH packs and combining them to power his SG-2020. The voltage is a bit high for the KX1 (16V fully charged), and I didn't like the idea of 'wasting' charge with dropping diodes. But it's an option. (It's also heavier than the KX1 - about 2 lbs when done.) I'm also contemplating an 8-cell NiMH (9.6V) pack. This would be a good in-the-pocket unit for cold weather ops. The voltage is perhaps a bit lower than desired. LiPoly seems like the 'right' approach for a lightweight radio, even if it is more expensive. 11.1v in a triple cell pack isn't bad. I'd be quite interested in an Elecraft-approved solution! I could live with an external charge controller that just got plugged into the external DC jack... 73 de chris K6DBG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. That's a bit of a long haul in mid-day for that frequency. 73, Ron AC7AC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Noise on received audio
I have K2 s/n 4426 and have been using it for over 1 yr. I built it orginally as the qrp radio with all options except the KIO2. I have also built the K2/100 options and use this only at the home qth and take the battery qrp configuration on travel. I have recently started noticing distorted or buzzing riding on type of the audio. This is most audible on CW with strong signals, but I can also her it on SSB voice signals as well. It almost sounds like the person I'm listening to has rf on THEIR signal, though I know this is not the case as EVERY signal has this noise. I hear it most pronounced when using the 100W amp lid, but I can also hear it when using the qrp lid. Here is perhaps a clue to the sourcewhen I lift up the front of the lid on either the 100W lid or qrp lid about 2 high, the noise goes away completely. In fact, if I tilt up the front of the lid, and stick the handle of my screwdriver underneath it to hold it up, the audio is perfect...Could something on the motherboard of the K2 be generating just enough noise to get picked up by the audio sections/speaker wires in the lids of my rig? Rig has SSB, DSP options installed. The noise comes through whether I'm using an external speaker or headphones, it doesn't matter. I do not have a scope to do any snooping, but any ideas that could help me eliminate this noise thru trial and error would be appreciated. The radio is still usable, but this is somewhat irritating and frustrating... Thx 73 K5GUS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Fwd: [Elecraft] Question about Buddipole vertical
I have been the Buddipole since over 2 years now, and I very satisfied. The quality of construction and the RF results are excellent for a portable antenna. I have the deluxe package. Budd W3FF always delevery mature and finished products. I'm in contact with him very often. I will receive in a few weeks another parts that will permit to build a 2 elements yagi on 6M with the Buddipole package. I did a lot of DX contacts, even using QRP power !!! [Elecraft] FS: K2
For sale: K2 serial number 1073 with the following options: KSB2, K160RX, KNB2, KAF2, KIO2, KAT2 I purchased the radio in March 2000 and built it over the next month or so. I am the builder and sole owner. It has been operated in a completely smoke free environment. . The radio is a 10 operationally and produces 13 to 15 watts on all bands save 160 where there is 11 watts. This is an A model K2 with the following modifications: 2nd XFIL Tuning Mod K2 Frequency Shift on Transmit (Builder Alert #16) Alternative wiring for K2' AF Gain Control Cosmetically, the radio is a 9.9 out of 10. On the left side skin, there is a barely discernible 2 scrape on the paint with no metal visible. After 5 years of use, a close inspection will show a very few ding marks on the skins. I have taken very good care of this baby. The original construction manuals are included for the main radio and options. The KAF2 instructions were downloaded from the Elecraft site and printed locally. Included with the K2 is a set of extended side panels that I purchased from a third party a couple of years ago. These panels have counter sunk screw holes and are used in lieu of the existing side panels. They provide some protection for knobs and BNC plugs that stick out from the main radio body by extending the sides approximately 1 to the front and 7/8 to the rear. The selling price is $925.00, including professional packing and shipping to your QTH, CONUS or Canada ONLY. No DX, please. If interested, I can provide a complete set of pictures. RE: [Elecraft] SWL CW Opportunity now!
Thanks Mike. They're just a few miles away from KPH but I don't think I've ever worked them. I've worked KPH when they were active commercially when I was servicing and doing SOLAS certification on shipboard installations. It's good to see them being kept alive for future operators to hear. One of these days I must build an HF converter so I can tune 'em in on the old 500 kc/s Marine Band using my K2. For anyone who'd like to get a head's up on activities of either KPH, KSM or, on the Ham bands, K6KPH, send an email message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can often get a QSL for a listening report for an SASE to the address on the web site. I've got one printed on a genuine Radiogram form (such as shown in the opening pages below). I don't know if they still have those left. They were using up the left-over blanks after the stations shut down. In any case, I'm sure they'd appreciate reception reports from anyone who can hear them. It's good to let them know there are still SWL's out there who know a 'dit' from a 'dah', Hi! I've visited KPH both before they stopped commercial CW ops and during their last special on-air activity for the Night of Nights last July. It's a great experience for any CW buff within range whenever they do one of their regular on-air activities. For more historical photos of KPH (that's not the station on the air today, but it's often activated) go to: http://www.radiomarine.org/kph-proj.html And for a picture of my favorite key that is normally in use at AC7AC whenever I'm on the air, go to the top photo at: http://www.radiomarine.org/historic-5.html That's my old friend, LR at the key. He passed away in the early 90's and his widow passed that key on to me. Note the weight! Some of those Vibroplex bugs were tough to slow down G. Yep, it's a real old bug. No logic circuits. They're coming in strong in Arkansas right now (2100Z) on 12 mc, weak on 6 mc. The U.S. Coast Guard gave up Morse operation (and monitoring 500 kc) several years before the last US commercial Maritime Morse stations shut down in July 1999. I really miss the days (only about 10 years ago) when interesting Morse traffic could still be copied on the HF maritime bands. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 on AAAs or Lithium Polymer?
One Ham's Experience: Good News: The LiPoly I got (local RC hobby shop) was just great! I did not deplete it on our cruise thru the Panama Canal, maybe 6 hours operating time (mostly listening and no CQ's), but I did rag chew a bit with a number of SA stns. Ran a Spartan Sprint after return without recharging just to see if I could. Voltage stayed nearly constant until full discharge, at which point it dropped quickly. As quickly, I recharged it on a MAHA 77. Bad News: It worked again very well in the next Spartan. Then I got busy, and didn't check it for perhaps 5 months. At N6A (Alpine County, CQP), I tried it our before the contest, and it was toast. They are extremely light (a factor in Spartan, but I wonder in a back pack), they seem good, but they are expensive, and I've heard they die in a year or so, regardless of how you use them. WAYNE: To your basic questions -- I wouldn't spend much (or any) time adapting the KX1 to LiPo. Mine came with tinned leads on which I put a coax plug. The expense is a real downer. The difference in power between 6 and 8 AA NiMH's seems minimal. Yes, Alkaline dry cells do have a non-flat discharge curve, but you can get an bunch of them at Costco or Sam's and they're what I generally use. I think the weight of the additional batteries is overshadowed by the weight of the solar panel and regulator for those who really do back-pack (I did but I don't anymore -- too old). I know you have to keep up with technology and the ever-increasing demand for one more feature, but I would caution against messing around with a success, which my KX1 is right now. Besides, we're amateurs, and you have to leave us something to mess around with! 73, Fred K6DGW Auburn CA CM98lw wayne burdick wrote: We've located a 4-AAA cell battery holder that would fit inside the KX1 (one at each end of the bottom cover, as with the present AA holders). [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, Mozart's symphony #40 is playing in the background and snow is falling as I write this. The fire is warm; it heated us as we ate a bit of leftover turkey. Sam (the cat) is enjoying his portion as well. Hiking to the top of the mountain showed us the surrounding mountains were covered in snow but the valley was still green. Then the clouds rolled through our location so we could only see a few feet. But since we were on the logging road we could easily find our way home. If we had been hiking cross country we would have had a harder time of it. Tomorrow evening at 2400z the non-WARC bands will become silent only to awaken a few seconds later to my preamble. I always enjoy the last few moments of a contest as ops dig for their last contact. The bands are filled with CW. Then the silence. It is a great way to start ECN. That is also one of the reasons why we start at that time. The ionosphere has been recharged by all those signals flying forth and back. In this case DX should lengthen our reach just a little ;) One can never tell. Thirty meters was fun for me yesterday evening. I only hope forty meters is as good tomorrow evening. But the contest effect may ease the way there too :) It is perfect weather for me to work on my antennas! Some of you don't even start to raise or repair one until the temperatures fall below freezing. I must learn from you all and raise a 40 meter antenna replacement in a few inches of snow. They must work better if you all wait until inclement weather occurs to do your work ;) Might help me dig out one of those foxes.
