I don't yet, but I was considering leaving mine on 24/7 with some
self-written software to scan a few beacon frequencies looking for band
openings.

I'm therefore also interested to hear how I might be affecting the life
expectancy of the rig. I'd probably be band-changing more often than
most of the other 24/7 K2s too, so any info on the expected lifetime of
the relays would also be much appreciated.

I'm guessing, if you can produce a single nice clean sine wave on an
audio frequency signal generator, sending a clean sine in SSB ought to
be approximately equivalent to sending a single carrier in CW?

RE: [Elecraft] SSB Power

2006-02-11 Thread Don Wilhelm
Nick,

No need to guess, that certainly is true - a single audio tone transmitted
without a carrier present will produce a single signal at a frequency of the
carrier + or - the tone pitch (depends on the sideband). The amplitude will
of course depend on how strong the audio signal is, but it could develop as
much as the CW signal before driving the signal into a non-linear region
(that non-linear maximum will depend on the transmitter design - I do not
believe that is any need for concern on the K2)

[Elecraft] OLD Fluke 77 meter parts

2006-02-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Please forgive non Elecraft submission, but I have exhausted other means of
help. Fluke was no help whatsoever. The meter is +15 yrs old and parts hard
to find.

Through a dumb operator error, I blew the 1 k, 2 watt fusible resistor, and
need another one. I am using a 1 k, 2 watt plain resistor now, with no
overload protection. I do not know the value of the fusible feature. Does
anyone have an idea on this? Maybe I could put a fuse in series with the plain
resistor, if I knew what value to use. The Fluke manual does not specify fuse
value.

Anyone know of a source for this part? I love this fine old meter, and would
love to fix it properly.

A few of the 1960's-vintage SSB rig designs used exactly this method of
producing CW. It quickly fell from favor because the suppression of the
opposite sideband and even the carrier suppression often was not good enough
to avoid unnecessary and perhaps illegal levels of spurious signals. Some
SSB rigs had no more than 30 dB of opposite sideband suppression, perhaps
less. That's about five S-units, so an S-9 signal would have a image signal
at about S-4 somewhere between 1 and 2 kHz away (twice the modulating
frequency).

The suggested starting point for participants is from 3.555 MHz to 3.565
MHz and there abouts. Please be considerate of non-contesting FISTS
members who congregate around 3.558 MHz !!!

Those who wish to initiate calls, please use CQ NA.

The exchange is RST - SPC - NAQCC Member Nr. (for those who wish to
participate that are not NAQCC members, simply substitute the member
number with your output power. Please use a W to indicate that you
are sending a power output figure!

A bonus is awarded as follows:

If you use only a straight key for the entire sprint, multiply your
score by 2.

If you use only a bug for the entire sprint, multiply your score by 1.5.
If you use a keyer, keyboard, or computer, there is no bonus multiplier

ALL amateurs may participate; but only those using QRP power levels may
compete for awards.

For details - please check: http://www.arm-tek.net/%7Eyoel/sprint200602.html
To join the NAQCC please check: http://www.arm-tek.net/~yoel/joinup.html

This month the contestant who racks up the highest score using an indoor
antenna will be recognized with a certificate. For this purpose, an
indoor antenna is defined as being an antenna where at least 50% of
the radiating portion must be enclosed within a structure.

All contest logs must be submitted by no later than 2400 UTC on February
21, 2006.

I'm not certain I know how to understand what it is I'm measuring. In
my mind, I think much the 20 watts RF out of a CW signal is actually
carrier and of not much use. When in SSB, I want to think that I can
still put out the 20 watts, only now all concentrated in one sideband.

Why does the power meter fail to show the 20 watts?

Thanks for the all the replies. One of the difficulties of any new
venture is comprehending what it is that we see.

What I've learned here is that the V50 RF finals have a dynamic range
of 20 watts and will supply what the input signal demands up to 20
watts. The CW signal, due to its increased intensity, demands more
average power when compared to an SSB signal.

Using the Elecraft two tone generator, I found that the 1900hz tone
demands more power than the 700hz tone and when both tones are on, the
demand approaches that of the CW signal and is confirmed by the power
meter.

Thanks again for the education.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2006-02-11 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
I wish I could do the voice over and silhouette when I write that :)
However, I had better get this written before I do a face plant into the
keyboard. I got quite a workout today so I am bushed. Relaxed but
tired. After attacking the house with mop and broom, the dishes with a
wash cloth, and then washing all the flat surfaces in sight I went walk
about in search of trees ready to burn. Luck was with me. I found a
number of 8 and 10 inch diameter trees which had lost their tops due to
the heavy snows of three years ago. They were quite dead and dry. My
biggest problem was making them drop through the thick growth of fir limbs
surrounding them. I went through three tanks of gas with our trusty Stihl
but have quite a pile of wood. Getting the bucked up wood back to the
house was also a good way to expend energy. I used a wheelbarrow to cart
loads uphill. I think I soaked through four layers of clothing so I
needed plenty of water to get the next five loads out. Tomorrow I will
not cut as much but will haul as much as I can move. The weather is
pretty warm now, about 60 degrees at 2000 feet and much warmer in the
valley. This is due to change I was told. Tuesday the snow level will
drop to near 800 feet and then again on Thursday. This will most probably
snow me in so I am hoping the electricity stays on then I can solder a few
circuits. If not I can always rough out the plans for an RTOS I need for
my robots. That will keep me busy ;)
Enough digression, I am fading and will hit the hay soon. Tomorrow we
shall run ECN at our new times once again. The sun does have a few tiny
specks on it but one can never tell where one's signal will land. I'll
toss it out in hopes that many of you can catch it. Otherwise listen for
anyone calling CQ ECN. You never can tell who will be calling the net
into your location. Good luck and see what happens is all I can say.
