Re: [Elecraft] K2 RF Speech Processor?

2006-09-10 Thread Karl-Heinz Kaatz, DF7KHK

Hi Karl,

A question. Does the K2 have a variable resistor at R! Compression
ratio set?

Yes, the resistors RP5 are the 'variable' resistors for compression.

Yesterday I had send a mode for other compressions. With other resistors
you make your own three compressions.

First your name reminds me of my name and the name of a Collage
buddy Heinz Gelhaar. We had a lot of fun together.

The K2 has a Analog Devices SSM2165* which is a 8 pin chip with
external capacitors and one resister. The values of the capacitors is
the result of a design calculation. It sets up the internal amplifiers
to work over the actual audio input levels. It can serve as a mike input
amplifier to a SSB transmitter.

This might explain the problems people are having with various
mike's not working well on the K2. The SSM2165 wants a design center
mike input signal to work well.

The Compression Ratio set resistor does set the compression in this
device and since it's there it can be experimented with.

So it is safe to say the K2 already has speech compression built in.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 RF Speech Processor?

2006-09-10 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy

Karl Larsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi Geoff, cut your weeds and we can both think hard on what Speech
Compression really is. I got to thinking and about all it can be is
clipping of the high voice peaks, and increasing audio drive. I will look
at the ARRL Hand Book and see what they have.

Hi Karl,

My apology for my delay in getting back to you earlier, as a Scottish poet
wrote -'The best laid plans of mice .

The end result of compression or clipping is essentially the same, which is
that the peak to average power ratio of the output signal is less than the
peak to average power ratio of the input signal, assuming that 'compression'
*is* taking place likewise clipping (slicing). This obviously means that the
average power of the signal is in both cases increased.

Compressors, frequently appearing under different names, achieve the result
more 'gently' than clippers, and there is some delay before they react in
part due to the time constants within the gain control loop. Whether or not
this delay results in any performance problem is something that the designer
will have checked, and in the K2 there does not appear to be a problem.

You will have seen that in the SSM2165 chip the sample of the signal used to
control gain is taken from a point ahead of the gain controlled amplifier,
the VCA. This method of 'forward control' makes it much easier to have the
controlled amplifier's gain set suitably for a signal as it arrives. The
picture is of course more complex in real life because many signals of
various amplitudes and frequency occupy the same time frame.

Those systems using 'backward' control, such as a typical ALC where the
control sample is taken from the output, by their very nature will allow
some output, perhaps distorted, before the gain of the controlled amplifier
is reduced - closing the barn's door after the horse has bolted. Thus in my
view, ALC is useful if used carefully and as the last line of defence.

Clippers, assuming proper design, react very quickly slicing the signal at
the required amplitude. If used directly at audio the result can be a mess
of harmonics and intermod products. For this reason an audio signal is
upconverted to become a SSB RF signal, symmetrically clipped, filtered and
downconverted back to audio. With a reasonable RF SSB filter before the
clipper to obtain unwanted sideband suppression and another after the
clipper to attenuate harmonics and to limit bandwidth , some intermodulation
products within this second filter's passband will remain. In practice their
effect is acceptable provided that a low pass audio filter with a cutoff
frequency around 3 kHz is added to the output. One function of this audio
filter is to attenuate any intermod products resulting from the RF to audio
downconversion which are outside of the required audio passband.

Of course the clipping and filtering can be applied to a transmitter's IF
SSB signal instead.

I admit to oversimplifying the picture.

Geoff

FWIW my guess is that if audio compression and true clipping is to be
employed before the balanced modulator, it's an 'either - or' situation. If
some of both is used, the clipper should I think be ahead of the compressor
mainly to take advantage of the existing noise gate in the K2's compressor,
but not a tidy arrangement. I still have the hunch that if a clipper is used
as the 'main' audio processor, the compressor's compression ratio should be
reduced.

To limit additional distortion could require a symmetrical clipper in the Tx
IF together with the audio compression, but that is a very different story,
and quite impractical as a mod to the K2.

[Elecraft] Nylon Screw

2006-09-10 Thread Jeremiah McCarthy
The nylon screw is the ultimate answer...The reason the short occurs is that in
some instances the tapered head of the screw comes into contact with the sides
of the hole in the tab of Q6...Counter sinking the hole in the tab of Q6 works
as a temporary measure, but I would not recommend it as a permanent fix...It
will get you on the air while you wait for the nylon screw to arrive...

Hello all:

I had disassembled my previously operational KX1 (SN854) in anticipation of
adding the KXB3080 option. However I realized that it would be some time
before I could get around to it, and I felt like operating. So I put it
back together, powered it up, and released the smoke. Examination showed
that a short section of V+ PCB trace just after the power switch had
vaporized. PCB traces make excellent fusible links. I measured the
resistance to ground from the far end of the trace. It was 1025 Ohms. By
now I had a pretty good idea what was going on. I repaired the trace, and
measured the same resistance at the power connector. So far so good. I
powered it up outside of the case and all is well. Now I'm real sure what's
going on. I reassembled it into the case, and measured the resistance at
the power connector; 0.4 Ohms. Q6 was shorted to the case. I backed off the
screw for Q6 1/8 of a turn and the short goes away. I examined the plastic
spacer and it does not seem deformed. The insulating pad also seems fine.
I did not torque the screw to 20 foot pounds. I don't know what to do next.
All suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul N8NOV

When it arrived I was amazed at the outstanding quality of the unit. The

For me I happy that I now have a very good restoration tool which will only

[Elecraft] K2 4907 - Still no audio

2006-09-10 Thread Zac Brown

Fellow builders,

I've been working on building my K2 as time permits since may of 2005.
I was hoping to have it completed by now, but got stuck on a problem and
haven't had the time to really delve into it until recently.

Back in 2005, I posted a question to the group - the topic was No Audio
Except during Menu. I'm still having this problem.

I've been exchanging emails with Gary, and feel like I'm getting close
to finding the problem.

Here's a summary of things that I've checked so far:

R12 looks fine, squelch is turned off, the 18C452 MCU looks fine
(measuring all pins results in expected values, have already pulled the
MCU and verified that all pins are straight, etc ... ), visual
inspection of solder points revealed no solder bridges or cold solder
joints, all resistance checks are passing. Nothing aside from the base
 K2 kit is installed.

D9, however, is exhibiting some strange behavior.

When I'm in normal receive mode, D9's cathode is measuring about 1.9
VDC. Gary tells me that it should be close to 0 VDC in receive mode,
and that if it goes much above 1 to 2 VDC (in receive) that the MCU will
turn off the 8R line, resulting in what appears to be a dead receiver.

When I go into the menu, as soon as I scroll past the ATU entry
(I have no ATU installed btw, just the base K2 kit), D9's cathode drops
to about 0 VDC, and I hear audio at that point. It stays like that as
long as I remain in the menu. As soon as I exit the menu, D9's cathode
goes back to about 1.9 VDC and I hear no audio.

If I put a piece of wire across D9's connection points (bypassing D9),
then I hear audio all the time.

I feel like I'm getting close to finding the problem. Any ideas what
could be causing this? It's probably something that I did wrong while
building the radio, but I'm not sure where to look at this point.

Thanks,

Zac Brown

RE: [Elecraft] K2 4907 - Still no audio

2006-09-10 Thread Don Wilhelm
Zac,

If D9 has DC Voltage on the cathode, either there is RF on your antenna or
you have something wired wrong. Does the voltage at the cathode of D9
remain if you disconnect the antenna? Do you have any DC voltage on the
anode of D9? That should be zero volts.

Are you certain the K2 is not going into transmit? What is the voltage at
the anodes of D6 and D7. If your K2 is in transmit state, there should be
about 8 volts at the anode of D7 and the anode of D6 should be zero. In
receive state, the opposite should be true - 8 volts on the anode of D6 and
zero on the anode of D7.

You could temporarily remove R66 to see if the voltage is being produced by
RF on the antenna side or if there is something wrong with the wiring on the
VRFDET signal line inside the K2.

With R66 removed (and the jumper removed from D9), what is the voltage on
the Anode and cathode of D9 - it should be zero in receive at both points.

Don W3FPR

 well...

OK. Nothing against the battery chemistry ... God knows, Chemistry was
my very absolute second worst subject in college, right after Art
Appreciation (I'm colorblind and art-insensitive ... seen one painting,
seen 'em all). Since I've retired, I've found less and less reason to
have those other things anyway, so perhaps you've broken the code
here. If my laptop catches fire, it's overboard, as with my cell phone,
which I rarely carry anymore, and may give up since the battery is dying
and I don't want to face those young marketing dudes in the Sprint store
... my truck has a phone number, maybe that will be enough.

Seriously, my only one LiPo battery (from the local RC Model shop)
exhibited bad symptoms, and I quarantined it. So far it hasn't burst
into flames, but it has truly swelled in the coffee can outside. It
isn't something I want *inside* my beloved KX1. It will go to the
e-waste tomorrow with a TV, a monitor, and innumerable batteries, two
remote control Barbie jeeps, and other inoperative soldered stuff.

YMMV

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net truncated report.

2006-09-10 Thread Kevin Rock

Sorry Folks,
I just got home and need to get chores done before work tomorrow
morning. I'll write the net report tomorrow evening.

I was surprised at good reports from my low antenna. The most interesting
contact was Beaverton though :) The folks at the picnic mostly did not
understand but a few did: I had worked a local station on 20 meters!
Then, later, I worked him again on 40 meters. Very odd for a G5RV only
ten feet off the ground at the ends and about 40 feet high at the center.
One end was truncated since I had run out of trees. It was wrapped around
the tree and tied off toward the middle. I will NOT attempt modeling this
setup! But, it worked for 13 QNI for both nets.

More tomorrow.

Thanks Guys,
   73,
  Kevin.

[Elecraft] K2 Menu/Filter Settings Downloadable?

2006-09-10 Thread Paul Clay
I'm getting ready to upgrade my K2 firmware to version
2.04. According to the instructions, I believe I will
have to manually reenter all of my menu and filter
settings once I install the new cpu. The instructions
say write all the info down, which is going to be time
consuming and which will involve (I think) me having
to install the counter probe to get the bfo settings
(I don't leave the probe isntalled during normal
operation). As I have the KIO2 installed, I'm
wondering if there's not a way to do a dump of all
the current CPU settings to my computer for printout.
Is there? If so, how's this done?

Thanks!
Paul, N6LQ
