Re: [Elecraft] Rework Eliminators

2006-11-28 Thread Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-655-8604
I've found the audio filter/DSP one to be very convenient when doing work
on the front panel/control boards, since things can be tested without
having to reassemble that stack, or probed behind where it would be.

   Tom,

They are listed at the bottom of the Elecraft website. I put them in my K2,
   and they are great.
What they are is a board that plugs in to the connectors for the various
   option modules, KSB2, KNB2, KAF2, etc.

You can do them as you assemble the K2, or go back after it is finished and
install them. They are great for troubleshooting, since all you need to do
is unplug the suspect module and verify operation. I had an issue with my
KSB2 board, and it was great to be able to simply unplug it. If you do not
have the rework eliminators installed you must solder in jumpers, and other
   steps to remove a module.

[Elecraft] Rework Eliminators

OK I just have to ask:
What the heck are Rework Eliminators?

I am just starting a K2/100, and will be building it for some time. In the mean

Rework Eliminators come up from time to time. I am dying to know what they are,
and if they are something I need to help with my move into K2 land.

2006-11-28 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
We've just uploaded our free W1 Wattmeter Windows control program to the
Elecraft web page. The W1 Software page also includes the VB6 source
code for your enjoyment and edification, along with a screen capture of
the running program.

This program was written by Brian Broggie, W6FVI, from our engineering
group. Thanks Brian! Brian can be reached at: brian (at) elecraft.com

The W1 software page can be reached via the 'software' link off our main
http://www.elecraft.com web page, or directly at:

http://www.elecraft.com/software/W1/elecraft_w1_software.htm

For those interested in writing software, the W1 serial protocol is
documented in its user manual, available at:

http://www.elecraft.com/K2_Manual_Download_Page.htm#mini

If you modify or extend the program please let us know and we'll add it
to the page for download :-)

Have fun!

RE: [Elecraft] K2 weird problem

2006-11-28 Thread Kevin Schmidt
Others on the list know infinitely more than I do about how the K2-KSB2
work, but from the symptoms, I would guess that the KSB2 is loading down
the VRFDET line so that the K2 thinks it isn't generating enough power.
It then tries to up the power, gives the high current warning, and drops
back to 10 watts. This would suggest checking the components around Q1
on the KSB2.

[Elecraft] OT Alspaugh CW keyboard cct diagram

2006-11-28 Thread David Lankshear
This is off-topic, but perhaps someone can help me locate a readable circuit
diagram for the Computer keyboard CW encoder by Ron Alspaugh, W6NKS, which
appeared in QST December 1997?

I purchased the kit from Morse Express and want to change it around a wee bit.
The instructions had a circuit diagram on the back page that you wouldn't
believe HI! Text is back to front, mirror imaged, sideways etc., so it looks
like a cross between Cyrillic and Arabic and large patches of detail are
missing or overlaid. About the only thing clearly recognisable are symbols for
jacks and LEDs. As I failed to find a diagram on the net I mailed the very
helpful Marshall Emm to ask if an unscrambled version was available but guess
he doesn't have one to hand as he didn't get back to me.

Grateful thanks in advance for help rendered.

RE: [Elecraft] How does the W-1 work?

2006-11-28 Thread Darwin, Keith
Welcome to the world of SW. In this day, more of the functionality of a
circuit is often done in software, and that software can be very
complex. In fact, SW in general is far more complex than hardware just
because it can be. Complex hardware takes development time, board real
estate and pushes parts counts up. Complex software only takes
development time.

Now, to your question about what's going on inside the WM-1 PIC? Sorry,
I have no idea.

2006-11-28 Thread k7hbg
Hi Everybody.

I just got my W-1 and put it together. It's a KEEPER , works like a
champ! I read the manual Page (11) "circuit description" a few times and
it seems to make sense. I would like to know what is going on in the
little PIC processor. I don't want the code or anything but I sure would
like to know what it is doing in general. A flow chart would be nice.
I know that it has digital inputs and outputs as well as an analog to
digital converter. It seems that a good amount of the schematic really
exists inside the PIC and so, I'm curious.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 weird problem

2006-11-28 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gregg,

There are no ICs on the KSB2 board that should cause a problem of that
nature.
When in CW mode, and during transmit, the only components that should be in
the signal path electrically are C42, D3, Q3 and C39.

Follow along on the KSB2 schematic - at the bottom, the BFO signal enters at
P1 pin 12, goes through C42, then D3 should be conducting because the TXC
signal from the KSB2 firmware should be active (+5v) during CW transmit.
The TXC signal also causes Q3 to conduct and the BFO signal flows out the
emitter of Q1 and through C39 to pin 7 of P1 - from there it goes to the RF
Board and on to the transmit mixer. Be certain the TXC signal is correctly
present from the firmware chip (Pin 12 of U1).

So there is little involved on the KSB2 board for CW transmit. Check to see
if you have the proper conditions present for the signal flow described
above, and that information should lead you to the source of the problem.
Check Q3, D3, and possibly D5.

Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] Weller WTCPT tip life??

2006-11-28 Thread Fred (FL)
You might want to "tighten" the tip to iron
connection itself. Wellers, especially those of
old - did this all the time. A slightly resistive
poorly tightened tip connection - and one will get
50% or less heat conduction! For me - a simple
Circuit Specialists Inc. soldering station - is
much better, and less costly. Tips are
reasonable. I'm not in the soldering business,
and none of them last all that long.

Re: [Elecraft] CW QSO's from around the house

2006-11-28 Thread Julian, G4ILO
This was precisely the kind of application I wrote K2 Net for. See
http://www.g4ilo.com/k2net.html (sorry, the website is a mess at the
moment. It's being updated to a more modern design, but I have little time
for hobby activities of any sort at the moment, so it's a slow process.)

The only thing it won't do is let you send CW using a key or paddle. You
have to use the keyboard. Interfacing a key to a computer and then finding
a way to preserve the timing through two copies of multi-tasking Windows
and a network connection is just way too difficult.

[Elecraft] K2 + TRXPTC

2006-11-28 Thread Furlan Werner Dr.
on the SCS homepage I found the following new device:
http://www.scs-ptc.com/download/TRXPTC-en.pdf

I am using the K2 together with the EA3BLQ addon for digital modes and I
find the idea fascinating to build the PTC-2 board into the K2.

What do you think about this idea? First I wanted to build a K2 100 with
the Amplifier built into the main unit, but when I want to add the SCS
board into the K2, it will be necessary to separate the two units.
I'd like to hear the opinion of experienced K2 builders - do you think
this is feasible? Can I feed the transceiver remote control into the
TRXPTC?

I'd get a Data transceiver with Bluetooth serial port and optional 100
Watts Amp aside.
