[Elecraft] Response to Oregon FD request
I have had some fine responses to my request for a Field Day venue. They ranged from operating locations across the United States to clues for how to start a club featuring my desires where no club existed before. A friend and I have discussed starting this club before. These responses only firm my desire to do so. How many folks would like to build their own radio and get on the air from a rural location? Or even a city park? I think we could feature the Elecraft rigs to folks who happen by and have some fun meeting one another; either on the air or face to face. The rigs don't all have to be from Elecraft but it would be nice to have only home built gear. Even that does not need to be fixed in stone. Simply getting folks outside to meet and work a few contacts while bringing their families and some food would be nice. It seems to be rare these days where one can meet others of like mind and visit with them about our mutual interests. Then we can even discuss our differences. All we need is a single thread to start the activity and let it grow from there. If you want to market your KX1, K1, K2, or soon your fancy K3 bring it along and write a note to Lisa requesting some sales literature. I've no problem with Elecraft zealots :) We can have an Elecraft picnic and get to know one another better. Life is too short to use bad rigs. Build an Elecraft kit and step up to luxury. 73, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] Crystal Clear book
Well, this has strayed way off the original post, and I do intend to find the book and read it, but ... speaking from a little battle experience: Fred (FL) wrote: In a battle war situation - the last thing a operator military person needs to have to do, is dial in an exact frequency. Tactical radios -- the ones that are in the heat of combat -- were crystal controlled even in WW2. Other than those, in the US Vietnam Adventure, we had a lot of KWM-2A's for HF [big knob to change freq and our maint depot guys left the ham rocks in the bottom board and put our military crystals in the top board. A lifesaver for me at HS1FJ], AN/GRC-27's for Air to Ground stuff, and AN/TRC-24's for multi-channel radio relay stuff, none rock-bound. The 27's were channelized, but you could select the frequency for each channel [never really figured out how Art Collins and his guys did that, but it involved a lot of motors, gears, racks, and slugs :-) ], and everything else was selectable. Synthesized controls showed up in the AN/TRC-96, but rocks were still the staple for the AN/MRC-98 heavy mobile tropo. Now, it's all satellite stuff. Stability in WW2 was probably an issue, but passbands were wider then too, and voice was AM ... non-exact tuning was tolerable. In the 60's voice was SSB, tuning mattered, but then Art and his guys took care of that for us. For the record, I think I have destroyed 22 operational KWM2A's with thermite. We had two on every mission, we burned them up at the end. Re: [Elecraft] Headphone output levels on the K2?
Steve Kallal wrote: I have a requirement that my rigs have relatively high audio output wo/ distortion from the headphone jack. I have a moderate hearing loss, about 45 db down especially in the speech region. The audiologists calls that I've had that sort of loss in one ear since childhood and some in the other, and I did get prescribed an aid as a child, although I haven't been very good at using it. I think the best thing about a kit like the K2 is that adding a small audio stage internally before the headphone jack doesn't ruin the rig. But I would hope that won't be necessary. As others have said, you could also reduce the series resistors on the headphone output, although you might need to modify the shunt capacitors as well; I'm not sure of the function of these (could be audio low pass, or could be RF pickup blocking). You won't get 45dB of gain without transformer coupling, as I don't think there is enough power supply voltage for that. Also, noise cancelling headphones normally have an amplifier, so, in cancelling mode, increase the wanted as well as suppressing unwanted sound. Mine are vulnerable to GSM mobile phone signals, so might have RF pickup problems. (My interest in Elecraft is to try getting back into amateur radio, so I haven't used them near amateur transmissions, yet.) Also I don't wear my hearing aids with headphones because of feeback. I went with behind the ear hearing aids. Maybe a heaphones with larger deeper cups would help. Most hearing aids, including state supplied ones, in the UK, have a T setting, which uses an induction loop pickup, rather than a microphone. You can use this with headphones with reasonable field leakage, or special, silent, ones. I don't know how sensitive they are to RF pickup. For some, you can get shoes that allow them to be connected to normal domestic audio equipment. I'm not sure if these couple acoustically, or whether they match a connector on the aid. Theoretically, you could also get headphones with hearing aid type ear moulds. In the past, when hearing aids had output transducers that clipped directly onto the earmould, the clip was the same as used in professional head sets. Nowadays, they couple acoustically, with a plastic tube, so there might not be direct compatibility. I welcome comments from those who are familiar with the headphone output Unfortunately, I've not built it far enough to hear more than sidetone yet. -- David Woolley Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want. As for the local groups, I can completely relate. I'm a newcomer to Washington County, but I didn't have very good luck in Salem. When I went to the local club's FD event a few years ago, the club was not very inviting. Nothing like wandering around like a lost puppy dog, looking for someone to acknowledge you! Wayne, I haven't seen any responses to your question so I guess you have us all stumped. I'm guessing that it was not a 40's era comedian but, more likely, a 50's era comedian when (as I recall) that kind of schtik started with Bob Newhart. I remember listening to an LP at a friends house in the mid 50's that featured Bob Newhart. It did not have a radio instructor on it but otherwise was very similar. Don K7FJ I heard this very funny piece on NPR a couple of years ago about a 40's-era comedian who did skits about military life. Re: [Elecraft] Response to Oregon FD request
Hi Jason, et al: For what it's worth, and generally UNfortunately for all concerned, Field Day is probably the very WORST TIME for a new operator (to the area) to go to a radio club function and expect to be warmly received... During FD, everyone is running around, trying to ensure that everything is installed (properly) and running so things can start on time... additionally, there's a lot (usually) of activity during the entire activity and well-intentioned welcomes often go out the door with trying to keep track of who's operating what and where, and how the rigs are working. If you want to visit a club, do it at a regular meeting and then you'll have a lot better chance of being warmly received. And, if you're NOT... find another club. But please don't let the welcome you hoped for and didn't receive during Field Day cause you to decide that this club (whomever they happen to be) is unfriendly or closed to newcomers. No matter how hard we might try to be hospitable during FD, it's a chore, and we often fail. BTW - The MMARC (Jefferson City MO) tries(!) to welcome all visitors, and we WELCOME CW operators... of course, we welcome all other ops as well. In fact, we have a LOT more CW ops than SSB ops... go figger. But come visit us at a Club meeting... we'll be even more friendly then. 73, Tom Hammond N0SS At 09:57 06/13/2007, Jason Milldrum wrote: Kevin, I'm in Aloha, so you can sign me up when you get your group together. What's irritating is that they advertise that the event is open to all, but don't really follow up with trying to make visitors welcome. How are these wildly OT posts relevant? Why they're relevant because they're of interest to Elecraft customers. Any relationship to Elecraft gear is somewhat beside the point. OT posts occur on every list I've ever been on. They only become a problem when they take over a list. Trying to keep discussions constrained to things that are purely on-topic makes a list rather dry legalistic. The current UK licensing regime requires that a project be built before one can get from the 10 watt limited Foundation Licence to the 50 watt limited Intermediate Licence. It can't be a transmitter though, as one cannot use kit built equipment until you have gained the intermediate licence (it looks like Intermediate Licensee transmitter kits must meet some type approval rules, whereas full licence ones look like they are exempt). Assuming that there is some flexibility in what is built, I would presume that there would be some market for a K2 with build instructions modified to complete all the receiver bands before starting on the transmitter, for when the licensee upgraded; it might need appropriate type approval, though, for that market. Agreed. I have observed three general types of FD group behavior: The first is the well-prepared group. People know what they are supposed to be doing, how to do it, and where the stuff is for them to do it. And they're busy doing it. The second is the unprepared group. People don't know what they are supposed to be doing, don't how to do it, and don't where the stuff is for them to do it - or even if they have the stuff. And they're busy trying to figure it out. The third is the observer/kibitzer group, who simply watch and sometimes offer comments. The first two groups are distracted by their activity. The thing with FD is that you have to show up when they are doing the planning - which varies all over the place. And if one group doesn't seem welcoming, try another. If none of them are welcoming, start your own. You don't need a formal club - just a group. 73 de Jim, N2EY ** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Response to Oregon FD request
Tom, I have no doubt that your club, and many others, do a fine job of welcoming others to your events. I did come to the conclusion that this particular club is unfriendly to newcomers because I got the same treatment at one of their regular club meetings later on. It was a very good ol' boy atmosphere at both events. What little interaction that I did have with club members convinced me that they viewed me as lower than them. Perhaps it was because I'm quite a bit younger than most of those guys and they didn't take me seriously. Or perhaps they just want to keep their socialization to their own cliques. It doesn't really matter to me, as I feel that I didn't want to be a part of a group that would treat others like that. My biggest beef is that they went through the trouble of advertising the event and stating that all were welcome, when that was clearly not the case. I understand that FD is a lot of work, and can be very hectic. However, if you don't have the resources to deal with interested outsiders, then don't ask for them to come. In fact, we have a LOT more CW ops than SSB ops... go figger. Re: [Elecraft] RIT and XIT
Derick, The frequency display during receive will not change when XIT is selected because it affects only the frequency during transmit. It is as simple as that - if you wish to observe the transmit frequency during receive, you will have to activate RIT (which is what you are doing). I find SPLIT to be more intuitive than using XIT for exactly the reasons you mention, but YMMV - I use neither RIT or XIT, but prefer SPLIT instead. 73, Don W3FPR Detrick Merz wrote: So, with XIT on, as I twiddle the RIT/XIT knob, the displayed frequency does not get updated? [Elecraft] RE: K3 Noise Blanker ahead or behind roofing filter? Plus my own answer to Field Day.
I would like to thank Geoff GM4ESD, Wayne N6KR and Brett N2DTS for answering my noise blanker questions. I have decided to order a K3 and hope the noise blanker is good enough to fix my problem. I have other noises too that are not as bad as the TV so if I am lucky some of them may also be helped. I will be keeping my K2 for portable camping which I enjoy and the IC-746PRO for 2 and 6 meters. The power supply for the PRO should work well for the K3 if I install some power pole connectors. I am looking forward to working FD 1B QRP Battery as I have done for the last 6 years. That is my answer to the problem of CW operators not being popular with the local club. I usually go to a camp ground but this year I am thinking of setting up on my driveway by the street. Nothing would be used from my normal station and I think it would be fun to see how well it would work. Next year I still plan to use the K2 for camping and FD even if I have the K3. 73 and GL on FD W0CZ Ken ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
