[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, And a very late one indeed! I just got in and need to get to bed so this shall be brief. I tried finding the foxes on Thursday evening and worked the entire 90 minutes to no avail. Not even a hound was heard. I did read about folks in Washington and Oregon working them but I never heard a peep out of the pack. I think my antennas are still up. The cayenne has kept the squirrels at bay. I wish they would leave the rest of the house alone but they are collecting cones. Each morning I hear them falling from the sky upon my roof. Who needs an alarm clock? Please join us tomorrow evening to test the propagation. Tomorrow: 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP help) Please join us: Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4 PM PDT) 14050 kHz Monday 0200z (Sunday 7 PM PDT) 7045 kHz 73, Kevin. [Elecraft] K2 AGC, Seems a bit soft
I am enjoying my recently completed K2-6148 very much, but I had a couple of questions and thought others might have some constructive thoughts. While some folks like a slightly soft AGC in the receiver, I'm one of those folks that finds that soft signals received softer than loud signals (especially SSB) is tiring. I prefer a very stiff and level AGC. Mind you, this has nothing to do with the fast/slow delay rates or anything along those lines. 1). My K2 exhibits good AGC performance and I believe it works as designed, but it is a soft AGC. Are there any ideas on modifications to the AGC IC (LM833) that might stiffen the AGC performance? 2). I'm another of those folks where my AGC threshold voltage will not go above 3.7x volts. It is my feeling that a threshold set so that the AGC actually releases at the noise level is better than a setting where the AGC is ON at all levels. On my K2 the AGC never releases at any level. Any thoughts on getting the AGC to release correctly? Thanks in advance! -Paul Pollock KD7BWB ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna tuners
I too finally came to that conclusion ! I have a old LDG AT-11 and had it on one rig and the light bulb went off over my head and I put it in the output from the 6 port B&W coax switch in the line to the linear. Now any rig that I am using gets tuned. It works great. A newer model with memories would be even better as most of my antennas are fairly well matched anyway. I too have a KAT-100 and yes, it would be neat if that could be used without the RS-232 connection to the K-2. Probably some way to trick it into thinking it is connected to a K-2 :-) Walt K8CV Royal Oak, MI. - Original Message - From: "Scott McDowell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2007 11:13 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Antenna tuners Hi Has anyone checked to see if it would be possible to get the Kat100-1 external antenna tuner for the k2 to work with the K3? The KPA100 was designed as an integral part of the K2, and specifically not as a general purpose HF amplifier. In addition, the KPA100 does not include coverage of 6 meters. The KAT100 requires considerable bi-directional traffic on the auxbus, and could lead to RFI and other issues. 73, Ed - W0YK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Seems to me that with having matching project enclosures for the K1 and K2 already (and K3 blank enclosures Hopefully coming in the near future ...or here already), that it would be nice to have something available in the size of the KX1 also... [Elecraft] K3 main/sub receiver antenna routing drawings in progress
Hi all, I'm working on a set of drawings showing how antennas are routed to the main and sub receivers in each of four configurations: (1) both KAT3 and KXV3; (2) KAT3 only; (3) KXV3 only; (4) no KAT3 or KXV3. I hope this will answer all of your questions. We'll add the drawings to the manual, too. I also want to emphasize that the K3 is highly modular. This means we can offer additional modules and connectors in the future if the present set doesn't meet everyone's needs. I should have the drawings done by tomorrow. Then all I have to do is figure out how to put them on our web site while Webmaster Eric is off at the Japanese show! 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 RX only in port - still confused?
The other option that I was initially confused by is the General Coverage Bandpass filter option. Yes, the K3 will allow SWL General coverage without buying this option and -yes- some of the SWL bands will be attenuated unless you purchase it. Elecraft has this "Cafeteria plan", where you pay for the options that you USE, not the things you don't. This starts you out at the low $2000 range for a base radio in the premium class and allows you to work up to the $4000 Base price that the others offer. I try not to get hung up on the semantics of that "transverter module". Anyone that does not use a transverter, need a bandscope output, or have a second antenna is thrilled to be saving $79 on his radio. If you want any specific item - pony up and enjoy! So I guess the second receiver I ordered is useless unless I also order another option. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 subreceiver's aux RF input *can* be used in the absence of a KXV3 or KAT3
Dave G4GED wrote: Simply put, my primary initial use for the K3 would be for 160m DXing using seperate RX antennas, so an RX-only i/p port is essential. Hi Dave, The subreceiver can get its signal from either the main RF path (shared with the main receiver), or via its aux RF input jack (on the subreceiver PCB). Normally, the unused antenna jack on the KAT3 is routed to this input. But if you don't have the antenna tuner, you can still route the subreceiver's aux RF input to a BNC connector on the rear panel called "AUX". A few operators have told us that they might prefer to use this method for obtaining an RX-only input port, rather than install the ATU. We may at some point supply a special cable for this purpose. You could also install any ordinary panel-mount BNC connector, if you have one, and attach the sub's supplied aux RF cable to it. If you don't need dual receive -- just an RX-only input to use with the main receiver when in receive mode -- the KXV3 would provide it. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Dave you need a KXV3 to get a primaryRX ANT input for the Main RX. The Sub RX can use ANT 1 (TX antenna) or it can use the AUX RF input for a secondary RX antenna input. The K3 may not come wired for the latter but I am told it can be configured by the user that way. This all assumes you do not have the KAT3 which provides yet another alternative with ANT 2. [Elecraft] K3 RX only in port - still confused?
Hi guys I'm another prospective buyer for the K3 but a newbie to this list. I've searched the archieves and altho' this subject has been touched on before, I'm afraid I'm still confused by all the options that's been described. Simply put, my primary initial use for the K3 would be for 160m DXing using seperate RX antennas, so an RX-only i/p port is essential. Please dont confuse me with too many fancy options. If I order the basic unit+ Sub rcvr, what's the minimum accessory I need to order to provide a RX-only i/p port function for the use intended above? BTW, The sooner the K3 Manual is released, the better! Many thanks in advance 73 Dave ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] "lousy audio" ?
With the increasing popularity of using headsets with computer sound output there is a vast surplus of sound systems built for computers, that were usually packaged with the computer, that are gathering dust in garages everywhere. I've got so many lying around I usually haul them to the local Ham club meetings to give away. The sound quality ranges from poor to truly remarkable. Some are speakers only that rely on the output of the sound card for volume and some come equipped with built in amps and a wall wart or power plug. I tried about 10 of them on my K2 and had results that were all positive and most sounded very good. No modification was needed to use any of them. I tried them on my FT 100 which has severe sound quality problems with the built in speaker. I have been using a 3 Inch "LCS-80M" in a plastic box (made in China) with the FT-100 and had good sounding audio for years. I use it primarily for when IO want to use the GC AM frequencies. To summarize - lots of good cheap or free stuff out there if you want it. Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 high current draw
Jim, Please differentiate between HI CUR messages and a measured power supply current to the K2/100. The answer will tell you where to look. If you are simply seeing HI CUR messages, check the power output from the KPA100 - if you find that it is putting out max power (100 watts or greater) for all setting of the power control above 10 watts, then look for the trouble in the KPA100 wattmeter first. It is quite likely that diodes D16 and D17 were zapped by a lightning surge (it is summertime and lightning surges are not uncommon) - if this is the case, just replacing the diodes will usually cure the problem - and make a mental memo to disconnect your antennas when not in use. The HI CUR messages indicate only that the current being drawn by the base K2 (not the KPA100) is in excess of the setting you have for CAL CUR. You might want to check the CAL CUR setting - with the KPA100 it should be set to 3.50 amps or higher. Another cause of HI CUR messages can be a low voltage from your power supply - check its output and the connecting cables for good low resistance connections. The way the K2 controls power results in a higher current draw when the voltage at the KPA100 (or K2) power connector is reduced. If you are having excessive current draw from your power supply (as measured by an external meter - perhaps on your power supply *and* you have power control from end to end of the power pot, then you should be looking at either the T/R switch or the Low Pass Filters in the KPA100 *or* at your antenna and feedline for the problem source. 73, Don W3FPR Soaring Eagles wrote: Folks, My K2/100 has been working fine for over 6 months. [Elecraft] OT: Lightning Strike Obliterates Delta Loop - FYI
In August here on the east coast, we often have lots of thunderstorms. At the leading edge of the last cell moving through for the evening, I heard the rumbles getting nearer and went out to the shack to shut some computers down and check the radar to see where the storm was. I have a 2m rig with an antenna in the attic that I use during these times for Skywarn net activity. I checked back in to see how things were going. I keep the K2 disconnected from the antenna when not in use, and the end of the coax in an apothecary jar. I had shut down the other computers, and was checking the radar on the one last computer, when it hit. (Good news is family and K2 are fine). At the time, I did not know what it had hit, but some breakers in the house tripped. I reset them, and found that my Ethernet port on my DSL modem, the Ethernet router, and the Ethernet switch in the office/shack were all dead. The 2m attic antenna and rig were running fine, and I informed the net of the event, and signed out. Further investigation, after the storm had moved far enough away, (its was about 2AM by now) found part of my antenna hanging in the driveway. A quick check around back showed a severely damaged balun. Let me digress and explain that I "had" a 80m delta loop, up about 70ft, fed with 300 ohm line, that went to a 4:1 balun up under the eves. Then RG-213 coax went from there, under the house, to the front of the house where my office/shack is. Immediately adjacent to where the 300 ohm line comes down, hanging in a tree, is a 2m Isopole antenna. That coax goes under the house and comes up in a cabinet where all my DSL equipment is. This feeds a 2m rig in the kitchen. At the time of the strike, the antenna was disconnected and the end was in a mason jar. After daylight, I found that over 1/3 of the loop was "gone". The insulation off of the 300 ohm twin lead was all over my back yard and roof. The balun was blown apart. I assume there are some "issues" with the RG-213 that was connected to it. A battery operated "Atomic" clock, on the other side of the wall balun, ceased operation immediately. Likely due to the EMP. I have since order a Cobra antenna, looks pretty interesting. Will let you know how it works. http://www.k1jek.com/ Lessons learned. Do not bring coax in same hole as Ethernet. Not sure yet how I am going to change this, as I have quite a few Ethernet runs under the house, but will have to see what I can figure out. I had planned, and now will be installing a box outside with suppressors, and ground rods to try to reduce amount of charge getting inside the house. The list of damaged equipment is extensive, and seems to grow by the day. The most painful damage was to a Kantronics KPC 9612+ that was part of a TelPac node for EMCOMM, and to my monochrome, networked, duplexing laser printer. I work from home and use the printer quite a bit. I have obviously gotten the computer network back up. Thought I would share the story with you, and hope to be back on the air when the new antenna arrives. [Elecraft] Re: Love Those K3 Memories!
But let me toss out an idea. These first 10 memories *could* store exactly the same thing as the normal band memories (those you get to by tapping BAND UP/DN), but only for 10 bands (say 160-10 m). This behavior could be specified using a future menu entry. It would give you two-tap, per-band recall over the entire range. 10 bands is 160 - 6 (I don't count 60 ). Using the first 10 memories as the "last used" frequency for each band makes a lot of sense. Adding the ability to cycle through a four frequency per band stack for each key would be even better. 73, ... Joe, W4TV Joe, that's a TERRIFIC idea. I was hoping someone would come up with an idea like yours to make band changing along with the ability to change frequency within a band along with mode, bandwidth, etc. by repeatedly tapping the same button. It would be nice if someday Elecraft could come up with a remote pod that would also incorporate your idea. Re: [Elecraft] "lousy audio" ?
Also for those interested in good audio powered by 12 volts, do a search on Ebay for 'equalizer booster' and you will find several high powered, 12 volt, equalizers. Most can be directly driven with a speaker output from a receiver, and if you want to drive them from a high impedance line input it is usually a simple matter to locate and remove the input swamping resistor. They do take a lot of 12 volt power, but it is one inexpensive solution to the power amplifier. Don''t forget to fuse the speaker leads too - 100 watts per channel is a lot of power (even if it is peak power) and can melt speaker voice coils quickly. 73, Don W3FPR Brett gazdzinski wrote: I think it would be a lot easier (but not as much fun) to buy a good bookshelf speaker and small hifi amp. [Elecraft] DL1 Building a success, Soldering Iron Runaway
My kid and I just finished off the DL1 Dummy Load. Simple? Yes, but it introduced quite nicely some basic soldering skills for the 12 year old. Also, it demonstrated one key requirement in kit building... Read the text of a particular step in its entirety. I let him read the steps and when we got to the one commanding "Install the 100Ω Resistors" he did not read the rest of the step suggesting to install them 1/16 inch above the board. Luckily being a circuit designer EE I figured elevating them made sense so we did, but if we had simply read the whole step we would not have had to guess. So hats off to Elecraft for producing good step by step documentation. Oh I also bought some new tips and shroud for my old Weller EC2001 Soldering Station. I had not used this in many years. We installed a new tip and shroud, turned it on and moved to doing the parts inventory. I looked up to see the tip red hot. Hmmm... I twiddled with the five pin connection between the iron and the base unit and it calmed down. All the while the temperature seemed to display what looked like a valid varying value around 700°F while it was clearly much higher. I don't know what happened, but I wanted to share the warning to visually verify your iron has not gone into heating runaway. I have heard folks say the five pin hand piece connector can be a little flaky. I guess this is why so many of you like the Weller with the ferromagnetic tips eh? RE: [Elecraft] "lousy audio" ?
I think it would be a lot easier (but not as much fun) to buy a good bookshelf speaker and small hifi amp. I got a set of little hifi speakers from a place that sold used hifi gear cheap, hooked them up to an old hifi amplifier, and into the computer sound card for games. I used to play flying games a long time ago The sound was fantastic, not like what computer speakers typically do, but 50 real watts per channel and GOOD speakers. When you crashed or ran into something, you FELT it. You could build an outboard amp, or on some speakers include it inside the speaker cabinet, but the people who make GOOD speakers spend a lot of time getting the response in the ballpark, so its somewhat flat and not real bumpy... There are a lot of chips that give very good audio with very few parts, one was an lm383 or something like that, 3 or 4 extra parts and a TO220 package with 5 or 7 leads, 12 watts out I think, there were a few models of various power outputs. I put one in an old Gonset G76 to improve the audio on a very good receiver (262 KHz IF). The entire audio amp was 1 inch square. Not much point of doing this on the K2 other than maybe more volume, but the K3 I hope has good fidelity out the line out jack (sound card). You can always reduce the fidelity if you want, you can not improve it without mods to a radio. Its always nice to have CLEAN and QUIET audio power available, even if you want to limit the frequency response and volume. Without a K3, you could put the audio through a 10 band eq, and limit the response to whatever you want, even very narrow for CW, or widen it up for swl or AM work. Used high quality audio equipment is VERY inexpensive... Re: [Elecraft] "lousy audio" ?
Deni, Actually it has already been done. Tom Hammond has a design with minimum components on his website that uses a TDA2003 audio chip. Look in the General Amateur Radio files section at www.n0ss.net. That is the one I am using. Plenty of audio. I am driving it into two paralleled 5 inch woofer 9 ohm speakers and it works great and I switch in a 'tweeter' which consists of the same speaker used in the K2 (Jameco 6) when I want more high frequency response for SWL Broadcast listening - my 'tweeter' is connected with a series 40 uF non-polarized capacitor. My woofers were a special buy that I made many years ago and are not readily available, so my speaker setup is not readily reproducible. My prior amplifier used only one of the 9 ohm speakers and also worked fine. More power is available with lower impedance speakers (or in my case a paralleled pair). The frequency response will depend on your speaker choices and the enclosure - a bit of experimenting may be in order to obtain what you want to hear. A metal enclosure and ferrite beads on the inputs can produce the RF Proofing, but I use a wood cabinet with the speakers to control resonance effects. The electronics can be inside a shielded box if you encounter RF problems. Maybe someone will come up with details of an enclosure design using available speakers. 73, Don W3FPR F5vjc wrote: So, how about someone comming up with a good communications quality amplified speaker and enclosure design, RFI proof of course! [Elecraft] "lousy audio" ?
So, how about someone comming up with a good communications quality amplified speaker and enclosure design, RFI proof of course! I would build one...I believe there was/is an Elecraft design but it looked overly complex... Anyone care to suggest a suitable audio chip, speaker and enclosure? -- 73, Deni F5VJC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
