[Elecraft] 2T Gen problem
Hi, I am in the final alignment and tests of my K2/SSB/PA100, which seems to be going very well, . but I am facing my first real problem with an Elecraft kit, the 2 T GEN. This is rather frustrating, since there are only a few components, no toroid, etc. The 700 Hz generator works and produces a max 150 mVolt peak signal, but the 1.900 Hz generator does not work. I noticed that Base of 2N3904-Q1 (1.900 Hz) shows 0 V, while Base of 2N3904-Q3 (700 Hz) shows 2,1 mV. With a 8.9 Volts Vcc, Collector Q1 shows 8,1 Volts while Collector Q3 shows 6.7 Volts. Drains Q2 and Q4 (2N7000) show both 4.4 V (= Vcc/2). The voltages of pins 1,2,3,5,6,7 of U1 (LMC6482) are all 4.4 Volts. Replacing Q1 with an available spare didn't help and didn't change the voltages. With the scope, I get a 689 Hz sinusoidal signal on U1 pin 7 (570 mV peak), but nothing on U1 - pin 1. There is a saw teeth signal on collector Q3, nothing on collector Q1. I have of course inspected carefully the soldering and the component placement. I either want a K3 or I do not. If I do (and I do), I feel if the rig is good, the filters are good. So, the exact measurements of anything in the radio are beside the point... I know I want the radio and I want filters for narrow SSB and general CW, so I add extra 1.8 and 500. DONE (Note: I did this without worrying about data). Re: [Elecraft] Use of Heathkit SB200 amp
In a message dated 9/12/07 11:12:05 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: the Heathkit SB-200 has several modifications that can be made to it, one of which is the reduction of drive power to excite it. What is modified to do this? Does anybody have any idea what the lowest power required to excite an SB-200 amp is? I presume you meant what the lowest power required to excite an SB-200 amp to full rated output is The SB-200 uses a pair of 572B triodes in grounded-grid. The data sheets list the 572B as needing 50 watts of drive in that service, so a pair will need 100 watts of RF to drive them. Without mods, it is around 100 watts, but I use to have one with the reduced drive mods, and I drove it with 30 to 50 watts for around 300 watts out. The tube ratings (for a pair) say that 100 W of drive will give 600 W output, so 50 W of drive would give 300 W output. I don't see what could be modified to reduce the drive requirement for full output, except perhaps changing to grounded-cathode operation instead of grounded grid. But such a mod would be extensive, requiring neutralization and other changes. I never tried testing the lower end with that mod. Though. Bottom line is: if an SB-200 had the reduced drive mod, could a QRP K2 at 10 to 15 watts with an amp key interface safely/adequately drive an SB-200 to say, 50 to 60 watts out? Since the SB-200 is a linear amplifier, I don't see why not. Of course it's using a sledgehammer to drive a 3d finishing nail The problem is, how do you tune up the SB-200 with such low drive power? --- I'm curious to know what is changed by the low drive mod for the SB-200. [Elecraft] Strange Problem
Fellow Elecrafters: I have had a strange problem with my K2, that I've both discussed previously on the list and discussed with Scott at Elecraft. The problem was that the rotation of the tuning knob would occasionally feel rough on my fingertips as it turned, and I heard what I thought were clicking sounds whenever I got the rough feeling. Jim, KA1SU, figured out what was really gong on. The little ring that holds the shaft of the encoder in position in the encoder body was catching on the fibers of the felt washer behind the tuning knob. The clicks were the sound of felt fibers ripping out of the washer, and the roughness of feel was the abrupt jerk of the tuning knob as the fiber pulled free. The felt washer was torn up pretty badly. How's that for bizarre? 73, Steve Kercel AA4AK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Raymond, I believe the oscillator should oscillate even with Q1 removed. Look carefully at the feedback loop around U1A particularly C2, C4, R1, R2 and R6. Be certain the jumper blocks are in the 'T' position. The most likely problem is soldering or a misplaced component. RE: [Elecraft] K3 Filter IMD/BDR specs
If I do (and I do), I feel if the rig is good, the filters are good. That's the sad part - how does one get the feeling just by looking at a pretty picture, assembly manual with no schematics and a bunch of beta testers who are probably biased to the elecraft products anyway? My guess is that they (elecraft) will wait until enough orders are placed before they release the numbers :-PPP (it's a joke so relax, I am not seeking to be excommunicated from the Church of Elecraft :-) My personal decision is to start even considering the K3 and eventually place an order AFTER I see the schematics (when btw?), real performance numbers as result of 3rd party lab test and reviews from unbiased users. That's how I based my decision to order my K2/100 (I am happy with it btw). This on the other hand is not a K2. What also bothered me is that Elecraft promised the radio too early (probably because of Dayton) and now is chasing deadlines due to inpatient customers (chasing deadlines' more often than not equals cutting corners). I've seen good and bad radios coming from one and the same company (Yaesu, Icom, Ten-Tec, you name it) so I wouldn’t jump and dump few thousands dollars into a black box, just because everyone says it is going to great. If you leave the guys (Wayne and Eric) alone to work I think it would be for the best. They have as much interest in delivering the radio as the ones who are waiting for it. My 2 cents. [Elecraft] K2 PLL Temperature Compensation Adjustment
I'm trying without success to optimize resistor RA on the K2 thermistor board. I should first say that the temperature compensation with the provided 33K resistor is quite good--I just wanted to optimize it. With RA at 33K, I'm measuring drift on the 40 and 80 meter bands after transmitting to be about 40 Hz. I'm measuring this by zero beating my K2 warmed up on receive only against a standard, then transmitting continuously at 20 W for about 8 min. (resulting in a heat sink that's quite warm), then zeroing again against the standard. For example, the measurement before transmitting (as displayed on the K2 readout) might be 4000.00, and the measurement after transmitting and zero beating again might be 3999.96. I expected that by adjusting the value of RA between the limits of 15K and 56K noted in the K2 Temperature-Compensated PLL Reference Upgrade instructions, I could move from a point of under compensation to over compensation. For example, given the same test conditions, one extreme might be 4000.00 from receive only to 3999.90 after transmit, and the other extreme might be 4000.00 to 4000.10. Someplace between would be optimum compensation with almost no change during warm up due to transmitting. I realize, of course, my experiment isn't precisely repeatable, and there will always be some random drift, and that different components will affect the drift at different points in the cycle. However, I still expected to find that changing RA made a noticeable difference between the extremes, and I'm not seeing that. At neither extreme can I get the zero beat display on the K2 to be higher than it was before transmitting. At most, the extreme resistance values seem to change the outcome about 20 Hz. I am running CAL PLL after each change in RA. Squirting component cooler on the thermistor does cause a rapid and extreme change in frequency, so it appears the thermistor circuit is at least doing something. Is my experience typical? Might there be something wrong in my circuit? Would changing values other than RA help? Thanks. Beauty of operation pays dividends long after the joy of building has ended. Like I say, I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around this one. I think it has to do with how much of oneself goes into the process. At one end of the spectrum would be a kit that was a box of parts, a schematic, and maybe a layout drawing or two. Lots of soldering, coil-winding, etc. Maybe even require you to drill some holes. On the other end would be a kit that involves mounting a couple of components and nothing else. From what I can see, the K3 requires a bit more assembly than building a PC. No soldering - same as a PC. And for the same reasons. It would have been great if the K3 could have been built with all through-hole components on conventional boards that we could stuff'n'solder, just like the K2. I think if that were practical, it would have been done. -- None of this is really new, though. We're being conservative, too, hence the + signs in listings like the one below. I take it from the comments so far that these are pretty good. :) As someone who knows more about PHP than IMD, could you give us the for dummies version? As someone whose main interests will be QRP PSK31 and CW, not serious contesting, which if any of these narrower filters would I benefit from? Also, there doesn't seem to be a lot to choose between the 2.7kHz 5 pole and the 2.8kHz 8 pole filter. Hi Bill, I've added the 1.8 kHz 8 pole filter plot to the web page. Its 6 dB b/w is 1.913 kHz and the shape factor is 1.5 We just measured the following in the lab: The 200 Hz 5 pole filter -6 dB b/w is 224 Hz (200 Hz at -3 dB). Its shape factor is 4.0. The 500 Hz 5 pole filter -6 dB b/w is 565 Hz (465 at -3 dB). Its shape factor is 3.1. The 2700 Hz 5 pole filter -6 dB b/w is 2.91 kHz (2.71 at - 3 dB). Its shape factor is 2.9. As one would expect, the shape factors of the 5 pole ladder filters are broader than the 8 pole filters. 73, Eric WA6HHQ - Bill Tippett wrote: Thanks...I almost I have enough to finalize my order. [Elecraft] K3 Filter Advice
WU7R: I didn't order any filters not knowing which ones to order. Since Elecraft has now posted the data I needed, here's what I'm probably going with: Main RX: 2.7k stock, 1.8k 8-pole, 500 Hz 5-pole Sub RX: 2.7k stock, 500 Hz 5-pole My reasoning is that the 1.8 will be useful both for contesting SSB and also SP CW. I like the 500 over the 400 because it is 130 Hz wider and the IMD performance is nearly identical. I might later decide to try a 1.0 if the 1.8 is not sufficient, but my guess is it will be OK. In Orion I used a 600 Hz 4-pole most of the time and then an 8-pole 1.8 kHz for contesting SSB and CW SP. The way these DSP rigs work, the effective bandwidth of a 1800 Hz filter on CW is actually more like 900 + the CW Pitch you select...so if you like a 400 Hz Pitch, the effective BW of an 1800 is actually more like 1300Hz (due to the fact that the DSP truncates the filter response below 0 Hz). Eventually I may order another K3 for SO2R with Main RX only and the same set of Main filters above. The reason I don't need the 1.8k for the Sub above is that I mainly plan use use it for diversity RX on CW (on 160 meters). 73, Bill W4ZV P.S. For most folks (non-contesters or low band DXers), the stock 2.7k filters are probably all you need. Remember that these filters are *only* for IMD/BDR issues with signals above about S9+30. Your final selectivity is still determined by the DSP filters with selectable BWs every 50 Hz. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 PLL Temperature Compensation Adjustment
Dick, You did not mention that you ran CAL PLL after each trial value of Ra. If you did not do that, the frequency indicated in your tests may not be correct. Also keep in mind that the compensation is applied to the PLL only. Temperature variations in the BFO will also change the frequency and further complicate matters - there may not be a direct relationship between the PLL compensation and the overall drift due to the addition of the BFO drift into the equation - in other words, your expectations may have been correct, but the actual frequency is being modified by the BFO drift causing the overall drift to be something other than expected. Every K2 will be a bit different, so your experience may not be universal. 73, Don W3FPR Lamb, Dick Judy wrote: I'm trying without success to optimize resistor RA on the K2 thermistor board. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Eric, If you want someone else to beat up on the vendors...just list their names here on the reflector. I am sure they will then be flooded with phone calls. Better yet, if those vendors need help in getting their products to you, maybe we can mobilize some K3-owners-to-be to quickly arrive and expedite matters. [Elecraft] vendors
Hey, u want to beat up on the vendors? Better get an air ticket because lots of parts are not MADE IN THE USA anymore, if ever. for example, people ask me how can u take medicine there in Thailand? Answer, my meds come from same place as urs in usa India, China, and some other less savory places. And what about the knock-offs? Remember the sub-standard metal bolt crisis of 25 yrs ago? Those bolts are holding up USA bridges today, eh? Anyone want to announce the contry of origin of most electronic parts today? Who out there actually knows, speak up. 73 Charles Harpole, HS0ZCW [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ More photos; more messages; more whatever. Re: [Elecraft] K3 specs
Gosh, Henry -- I don't think you thought through the political-economic dynamics here. :-) The vendors in question must be single-source on these parts, or they would have been back-up ordered from a secondary source and there wouldn't even be an issue. If these vendors get all kinds of calls from Elecraft customers, they will darn well KNOW they are single-source, and then who's in the cat-bird seat? They are! You don't want that to happen. You want your vendors to believe you can always order from somebody else. If they know they have you over a barrel, they can jack the price up and drop you to the end of the queue with impunity. Purchasing 101. :-) Bill / W5WVO [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Eric, If you want someone else to beat up on the vendors...just list their names here on the reflector. [Elecraft] K2 alignment confusion...
I am at the 40-meter transmitter alignment stage in Alignment and Test, Part III. It instructs me to Place the K2 into tune mode and activate the built-in wattmeter by holding TUNE. Using the alignment tool, adjust L1 for maximum output. And, do the same with L2, etc. etc. etc. First, I'm going into a 50W dummy load/Wattmeter (MFJ 267). And I have my Cal Curr setting at 2.0, and Power is set to 2.0 as well. I also have the radio set to 7100 for freq. When I put it into Tune mode, I get a reading of P. 0.2 or P. 0.3 through 0.4 It will flicker back and forth across those three values whether I turn the tap on L1 or L2 or just leave it completely alone. At the info triangle at the start of this section, it says you'll place the K2 into TUNE mode by holding TUNE. However, if you hold the button in it makes no difference from what happens if you just hold it in long enough to activate the P. 0.2 (etc.) display I do not have a key plugged in, so I obviously am not keying anything at the time of tuning...but it did not state you needed a key attached, and I presume putting it into Tune mode is keying the radio anyhowwhich may be an incorrect presumption...heck if I know. I went into the trouble shooting section, and it appears I need to be looking at Problem 150 through 160 The resistors are correct, the Diode appears to be correct (so small I can't read any numbers on it, but it checked out at the time of installation and is oriented correctly., I've not been able to find any shorts, the Transformers T1-T4 are wound as per part III of the assembly section. I've not checked the DC voltages because I cant' find in the manual what they should be reading or whether to check with power on or off and have reached the end of my patience for the evening and am not certain I'm even on the right path... Any direction would be appreciated. This build has checked out on every step to date...but I'm stumped. [Elecraft] Regarding K3 Order Changes
For those of you who may be interested, I sent the following query to Lisa at Elecraft: I apologize for adding to your load but I have a quick question. I have an order in place for a K3. I would like to make changes to my order. Should I wait for a notice from Elecraft that my order is about to ship and inquiring whether I have changes to make? OR, should I go ahead (now) and tell you the changes I wish to make to my order? Lisa's response: Thank you for your inquiry. The earlier the better for changes. You can just email them to me and I can acknowledge that we have received them. Prior to shipment we will then email you copy of your invoice so that you can confirm all items. It helps us to know as soon as possible so that we can have the items you want when we ship. [Elecraft] Final payment for K3 order
Rather than add to Lisa's load I'll first ask here Has anyone inquired about paying the balances that many / most of us will owe when the K3's are ready to ship? I'm under the impression that a CC # used for the initial deposit is NOT kept on file and therefore she'll need a CC # to cover the balance. Perhaps we'll all get an e-mailed invoice with everything listed that will serve to confirm that we're being sent what we ordered. Maybe this is a question for Eric or Wayne to answer ... 73!
