[Elecraft] How to clear your K3 through New Zealand Customs
I was delighted to receive my K3 s/n 138 here in the Land of the Long White Cloud recently. Here are some notes for anyone else in ZL who is waiting for their shipment to clear NZ Customs. The K3 was shipped from Aptos on Dec 5th and arrived into Customs here 2 days later.I was tracking its progress thru the USPS website. There was no progress. Having phoned and been informed that I would receive a letter giving me details of tax to pay I waited, but there was no letter. I finally phoned NZ Post who gave me a number in NZ Customs to call. They denied all responsibility for clearing the shipment and said it was the responsibility of NZ Post. Back to NZ post who were surprisingly helpful, told me that this happens all the time, Customs deny all responsibility etc. After some time on the phone from a really helpful customer service rep he gave me an Entry Number which is the one piece of information you really need, plus a customs phone number to call. Within 3 minutes I had given them my credit card number to pay the tax, they had cleared the package and it arrived the next day, 14 days after arriving in the country. For all other ZLs patiently waiting out there I hope this is of some help. Now for the best part. That PTT RCA socket is an INPUT - to close the PTT line - ie it puts the K3 into transmit. The Acom doesn't have ALC output, so it's not an issue. The K3/Acom combination works great on CW with no relay thumps or clicks from the almost silent vacuum relay in the Acom linear. The ALC input to the K3 is positive going (0 to + 5 Volts on pin 15 of the Aux I/O socket) and has been discussed on the Reflector previously. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 When examining the back panel of the K3 I see an output for PTT to control an amplifier but I don't see any input for the amplifier AGC output to control the transmitter power. Surely this common feature was not overlooked on such a feature rich transceiver. Where is the connection for this control and what control voltage is it looking for? I don't see an amplifier hook up diagram in the manual either. [Elecraft] K2 #6099 is Alive!
I finally completed K2 #6099 early on Christmas Eve. So far, just the basic CW QRP version; have the K160RX option to build yet. Construction was smooth through all stages. Receiver sounds fantastic, filtering is great (just used the setup described in the manual)! With the whirlwind of Christmas and grandkids, I've only had a little time to read over the operations section of the manual. Can't wait to get some free time on the air for a first contact - tonight looks promising! Now, what option do I want next!?!? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter advice...
Thanks to everyone for their comments on filters for a CW+AM K3. They are very helpful. I was aware of the distinction between roofing filter and DSP filtering but didn't know (or forgot) about the 2.7 kHz standard filter. As for the hoped for multi-bandwidth filter, I guess it is probably too soon to talk about. My first questions would be how wide it would go and how much it would cost. 73, Drew AF2Z ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 2 tone 3rd order dynamic range at 2 KHz tone spacing
I've been looking at the performance of my K3 using a buffered fixed crystal oscillator, hybrid coupler and Marconi 2018 signal generator... I've noticed a strange phenomenon where the two tone dynamic range appears to be approximately 10 dB worse at 2 KHz spacing with the 400 Hz 8 pole filter than with the 2.8 KHz 8 pole filter (90 dB and 100 dB respectively). At 5 KHz the range is 100 dB with either filter. Altering the width control from 400 Hz to 450 Hz and back again switches the filters, the audible effect of the spurious signal being there or not, is quite striking. Both upper and lower 3rd order products behave the same, I also get the same results with the Marconi signal generator on the high side or low side of the crystal oscillator. Anyone with a pair of signal generators and a hybrid coupler care to check their K3 and see if they obtain the same results? I'm assuming the reason is ripples in the passband of the 400 Hz filter many dBs down the passband. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and spectrogram: dual passband
The outer PB is tipped, that is, the high frequency side of the inner filter is five to ten DB stronger than the low side. Seems like it ought to be in balance. I think if you plot the response at whatever width you have set, you'll see the low frequency rolloff before you engage Dual PB. This is likely due to the relationship of the filter skirts and BFO. If you then turn on Dual PB, you'll see the former passband suppressed about 25 dB and the 150 Hz wide peak rising above it. Alternately, set the pitch higher to get away from the wide filter's passband edge and you'll see the suppression is in fact symmetrical about the peak. 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. It turns out my ear had little idea what was going on. I have the 2.7 khz and the 500 khz (but the radio is set to 600 khz). I think this function will act differently with different filters on board. Here is what happens. When one puts on dual passband, the inner passband that is at full sensitivity is fixed at the 600 hz of the narrower roofing filter. That PB does not change with any PB tuning adjustments. The outside PB is about 25 DB down. For me, that is too much!!! I would rather this be down more like 15 DB. At 25 DB down, I can hear there are stations outside the inner PB, but I can not copy them at the same time as the station in the center. The outer PB is tipped, that is, the high frequency side of the inner filter is five to ten DB stronger than the low side. Seems like it ought to be in balance. PB shift or PB Hi / Lo cut, both do exactly the same thing when in dual PB mode. They narrow up the outer filter, down to the inner filter at the narrowest. They do not, for example, I might have thought the in HI /Lo mode, you might be able to chop off the upper or lower context independently, but you can not. 73, Fred - kt5x ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi all, Phils, comments are only partially correct. Normally NZ Post will send a letter saying a parcel has arrived and how to pay for any GST. However the best way is to have an account with a Customs agent or with UPS and or Fedex and then there are no problems at all. For example I had a parcel from M2 yesterday that came Fedex, they cleared it, and sent it on by courier. Bureacracy doesn't get involved. Re: [Elecraft] K1 RF Board extra parts
I found a 100K Ohm resistor that was not listed on the inventory page - it was not taped with the others but was just loose in the bag. What is this one for? It would be my guess that it is R19, associated with the front panel assembly. R19 is a 100k-ohm resistor that was added *after* the first few hundred K1s to improve the linearity of the VFO tuning. It will be soldered across two of the terminals of the VFO potentiometer, so it will not actually be installed on any of the K1's PC boards. My K1 was one of the first (#175), so I don't know how K1 kits 2500 units later are being packaged. I may be wrong. A food box and lid, ie very large sandwich box. Adds hardly any weight but protects very well inside a shoulder bag. David G3UNA Do you have a favorite bag for carrying your K2 and a few accessories (like a set of Palm Mini paddles and some cable, maybe a small PS)? Re: [Elecraft] K3 - A CW rig?
Fred, I am a devote CW op and have never enjoyed SSB until the K3 came along. K3 audio is remarkably clean, distortion free and a joy to listen to. Clearly a great deal of the trash I heard on SSB I should have attributed to my receiver rather than the other guy. Unlike many other implementations, the K3 DSP noise reduction is very effective without introducing annoying artifacts. At its most aggressive it will produce a hollow, bottom of the well, sound but with no loss of intelligibility. The VOX is the smoothest I've ever used and is all you could ever want. Being able to tailor both the receive and transmit audio allows you to compensate for your voice and hearing characteristics quite effectively. 73, Doug, W6JD K2/100 #1626 K3/100 #23 -- Original message -- From: Fred (FL) [EMAIL PROTECTED] Seems like much of the K3 Reflector correspondence, and even the discussons of K3 Filters, invariably ignores the SSB mode in the K3. Is the K3, like the K2, again looked at as a CW contest rig? For those hundreds who received their K3's so far, there haven't been an practical how it works posts. This retired ham, is waiting until after 1 Jan, to decide when to order my K3. In a way it seems like the rig is still early in its product introduction, maybe later would be better. Re: [Elecraft] Mountain Ops Tac Pac replacement?
I use the Bail Out Bag 5 from http://countycomm.com/BAILOUTBAGGEN5.htm It is $40 and comes in black (which I have) and green (which they don't have). The side pocket holds a soft plastic soap dish into which I can fit a Palm Paddle. The lower horizontal zippered pocket is good for DC cables. The front pockets are good for mics. The fat side pocket holds logbooks and pens and would probably also fit a Gamma HPS1a power supply. It also has pockets good for 9V batteries, flashlights, headphones, etc. The K2 and a folding solar panel fits inside. A hard cover for the front of the K2 would be a nice option, just as it would be for the other Elecraft rigs. The K3 does not fit. Leigh/WA5ZNU On Thu, 27 Dec 2007 11:16 am, Christopher A. RE: [Elecraft] KNB2 diagnosis
Ha, ha! No fix. It's a way of generating noise to demonstrate that the KNB2 is working. It produces the sort of high-impulse, short duration noise the KNB2 is designed to handle. A lot of operators note that it doesn't do much for random QRN with fairly wide pulses at varying intervals. That's not what a noise blanker is best suited for suppressing. Blankers do a wonderful job on repetitive spikes such as those produced by cheap lamp dimmers, auto ignition, etc. The scratch is just a way of testing it if one doesn't have a suitable noise source handy. Re: [Elecraft] KNB2 diagnosis
Stan, Scratching Q21 is certainly NOT a *fix* by any means!!! It is a 'GO -- NO-GO' test only. BUT it is one 'no-tools' method that can effectively produce the noise that the KNB2 is capable of suppressing. Of course, the preamp must be on to bring Q21 into the circuit. 73, Don W3FPR Stan Rife wrote: I'll admit that I am pretty gullible, until I prove otherwise, but scratching the top of a transistor as a fix Ha ha ha hac'mon now. Hi Dave, My K3 shows an IMDR3 of between 110dB and 105dB with slight variations from the upper to lower side. This with the 400Hz roofing filter and 400Hz DSP filter at spacings of 100, 50, 20, 15, 10, 5 and 2kHz on the 20m band. Last week our quick and dirty first look also gave us numbers in the same ballpark: IMDR3 of 106db at 20 and 5kHz and 104db at a spacing of 2kHz. We did find some spurs, last week, which were coming from one of the HP signal generators, which slightly confused us at first. The spurs were very far down, but they were there. vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. We have also added staff (and overtime) in production and test and hope to beat the above plan. (We're still adding more help over the next 2 weeks.) 73, Eric WA6HHQ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
