David, You bring up a good point - how we actually sound to others is not necessarily how we perceive ourselves. Here is the alternative that I use: I have a good fidelity stereo system in the hamshack, and also have a recording of a male speaking voice (from a book on 'tape'). I play the recording on the stereo and hold the microphone close in front of the speaker while listening to the K2 on a separate receiver. A talk radio program can also provide a source speaking voice. The major drawback for this method is that just any sort of speaker will not do the job - if the speaker is not of above average quality, it will color its output and the microphone will receive a distorted sound. I have also used this same method to evaluate various microphones for communications clarity. 73, Don W3FPR David Cutter wrote: Listening to one's own speech via another receiver, to optimise one's own transmit settings still gives a subjective result, *on average*, no better than another radio listener. Re: [Elecraft] K2 K3 (ssb)
Don I'm really trying to get away from any listening done by ourselves and substitute an instrument = spectrogram. I just imagine that there is somewhere a reference that will help identify those bits of the display which contribute most to clarity and make it easy and more effective to adjust our filters accordingly. We would speak a set number of words for comparison and adjust for best fit. Fidelity is not an issue. In machine speech, this would be easy to optimise, but if we use voice keyers, those stock phrases could be perfectly adjusted for maximum punch. [Elecraft] Lead-Acid Battery Capacity (WAS: K3 : standby current)
... more like 50 AH. The biggest car battery I ever dealt with was for a VW diesel, and it was only 63 AH. Had to turn a 2 horsepower starter against the 23:1 compression ratio of the engine, *and* feed the glow plugs which required more than 30 amps. 73 de Jim, N2EY ** In the USA at least, AH ratings for car batteries are hard to find. Most of them are rated for the actual service in ways that make them difficult to assess for running a radio. Three common ratings are the Cranking Amperes (CA), Cold Cranking Amperes (CCA) and Hot Cranking Amperes and (HCA) indicating how many amperes the battery can deliver at some given temperatures (usually ranging from -18C to about +20C). They are seldom very useful in determining how long you can run a radio like the K2 or the K3 from it, especially at 100 watts. Perhaps the closest indicator is the Reserve Capacity Minutes (RCM). It's the number of minutes a battery can deliver a significant current - something like 25 amperes. Using that number one can make an educated guess about how long it can deliver current to support transmitting with a 100-watt rig, but it's not a perfectly linear curve. You can't count on multiplying the time by some factor for lower receive currents or lower transmit powers. Most car batteries are designed to deliver short bursts of energy to operate the starter and then float on the line while most of the electronics run off of the alternator. These batteries have a larger number of relatively thin plates to provide the greatest current flow through the electrolyte during peak demands, but the thin plates limit the time the battery can deliver the current. Deep discharge batteries designed for continuous service have fewer, thicker plates to provide more ions for more current over time, but they have a much smaller capacity to deliver high currents for a short time. Getting optimum performance is a matter of carefully matching the actual demands of the rig and how it will be used with the right battery but, typically, the Golf Cart or Electric Chair types designed to deliver nominal currents over a longer time are the most suitable for radio use. Re: [Elecraft] Lead-Acid Battery Capacity (WAS: K3 : standby current)
Good information, Ron. Also, true deep cycle batteries are considerably more expensive than automotive batteries - you're paying for the lead. Most batteries in common stores labeled deep cycle aren't - it's just marketing. With only a few exceptions (such as one of the Optima line), my rule of thumb is that if the battery lists any type of cranking amps rating, even if it also lists an amp-hour rating, it isn't a deep cycle. We go through a fairly large number of deep cycle batteries at work (for remote weather stations), and any more our 100 AH batteries are costing us upwards of $250 each, and weigh about 70 pounds. Now, these are American-made Concorde AGM batteries (I try to do my part to keep tax money in-country); Chinese copycat batteries are about $100 less. 73, Mike KW1ND (Still counting the days for the K3...) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 - inventory was short...but not really
Hi: Well, it's been a full week now since I finished the assembly (I can't bring myself to call it a build). When I did the initial inventory, I short 3 or 4 pieces of hardware, at least according to the parts list. The only thing I really needed was a black pan head screw...I had the rest around anyway, but since I wanted that black pan head, I asked for the other couple of missing hardware parts as well. When I finished the assembly, boy did I have lots of hardware left over...and that's BEFORE I got the replacement hardware from K3Support. I feel really bad that Elecraft spent time and money to send me a few odds 'n' ends that I actually didn't need. In my case, the inventory list clearly included more than necessary, but it was not flagged as this is extra. To be fair, I did order the KPA3 with the K3, so there may have been some hardware in surplus due to that (but there wasn't supposed to be and certainly not as much as was left). I had LOTS of surplus locks (both types) and LOTS of surplus nuts and I even ended up one black pan head screw OVER, even after the inventory said I was short one. Sowhen YOU do an inventory and find that you are a couple screws, locks, or nuts short, don't sweat it. OH yeah...one more thing. When I went to put the KPA3 in, I was very concerned about the SOUND of something very loose on that assembly. Every time I tipped the unit one way and the other, something was rattling. After 10 minutes of searching for stuck hardware that I knew was there somewhere, most likely stuck between the bottom of the board the heat sink, I found that it was the ferrites around two leads sliding back and forth. Oh for goodness sakes! de Doug KR2Q And one last thing about the KPA3. Thanks to the posts here on the reflector, I noted that the floating resistors (I think they are resistors) were pushed down near to the board. I simply applied a tiny bit of upward pressure and moved them away from the other stuff so that they were more air born. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 Error question
Hi guys, I just got around to building my K3, awesome kit! Anyhow, I was wondering if someone can help me out a little bit until I can talk to customer support on Monday. While doing the initial synthesizer calibration I keep getting an error message. I get Error VCO and the error code is 3. When I turn the rid on I get the Error PL1 message. I did check jumpers and the crystal as suggested and they are correct. Any ideas? Rich Hi Rich - I had the same problem. It is probably the same issue - the KSYN3 card VCO inductor is slightly offset. Elecraft offered to replace the card, or I could try to adjust the range by tweaking the VCO coil. Per their instructions, I removed the sleeve around the coil (unscrew the nylon nut) and slightly expanded the turns on the coil, and then reassembled the sleeve (they told me I should expand the turns slightly). I went too far and got a different VCO error message. So I tried again and this time compressed the turns slightly in between where they had been and my first attempt. That fixed the problem - my synthesizer calibrated fine. If you do this, just very slightly expand the turns on the torroid. You can also see your PLL voltages on each band using the DISP function when you are in the TECH MD mode. The PLL voltages on each band should be between 1-6.7VDC. Probably the best thing to do is to record these voltages (and you'll probably see where the problem is). Tweak the VCO coil and look at the voltages again and see where they shifted. Good luck. I just would like to know that Elecraft has intention to improve SSB mode. 73 Mark WQ7X --- David and Dianne on Comcast [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Date: Sat, 09 Feb 2008 18:22:20 -0500 From: David and Dianne on Comcast [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3: Interim Build Report Hi Everyone, As I posted here at mid week, K3 #371 arrived from Aptos in fine shape. I have begun the build and thought I would share some comments both positive and negative with all. You opinions of course will most likely be different but here are mine so far: Positive: The kit was packaged magnificently. The care in packaging is first rate. The manual is by far one of the most comprehensive I have seen in building many kits over the years. Clear, concise and detailed but very logical and easy to follow. Build quality of the boards is indeed elegant. Fit and finish is simply excellent. Tolerances are amazing. It is a work of engineering art. Congrats to Eric and Wayne of all of this. They should be proud of their baby. Negative: Yup I have a negative. Of all of the kits I have built over the years, many of them fairly complex, from Heath, LDG, W9GR and many others, this is the first to arrive short parts/hardware. And while the shortage is minor, it is specialized and significant enough to stop me cold in the build process and add yet another week to the final K3 experience. Simply put, it has been deflating. Yet more delay. While Elecraft was attentive to this matter over the phone and in a response from K3Support, I am still not sure if the parts are headed this way as no confirmation has been positively received. This will be my last kit experience. I should have bought it factory assembled as I planned originally. But I bought into the kit mystique. Never again. Concerns: I am both a CW and SSB operator as non-contesting DX'er. SSB TX issues are important to me. Several reports are surfacing here and elsewhere from very reputable sources about the current lack of SSB bandwidth and the lack of more powerful modulation. I urge Elecraft to address these issues ASAP (now perhaps with more priority than the second receiver.) This will be a deal breaker for me if not rectified. IMO it should have been correct out of the box. This K3 will be evaluated against my highly modified Ten Tec Omni V.9 which has for my operating requirements beat out every transceiver on both CW and SSB since its arrival here at this QTH, bar none, including my Pro III which for all its true Rx warts is a pretty darn good value for the $$. I paid my $$ and took my chances and hope that this will all get rectified in the end. And for those of you who may think that I should not air complaints in public, I ask, did yours arrive complete? Re: Re: [Elecraft] CQ WW WPX RTTY
This does work. I just made 4 qsos in the contest with Field Tester Ed Muns, P49X, using my K3 without any special software. What works for me is to record messages in memories in CW mode, then send them in Data mode (FSK D). At the end of each message add the character Greg describes, all sent as one character. Make sure the text decoder seems to be reading the message correctly, as sometimes either less or more spacing than sounds right on CW seems to be necessary to get the message just right. The TX TEST mode is very helpful for this. 73, Andy, AE6Y - Original Message - From: Greg [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: mark roz [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Elecraft elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, February 09, 2008 3:53 PM Subject: RE: Re: [Elecraft] CQ WW WPX RTTY You have to send it just as you would a single letter, no extra spacing. 73 Greg AB7R -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of mark roz Sent: Saturday, February 09, 2008 2:44 PM To: Elecraft Subject: Fwd: Re: [Elecraft] CQ WW WPX RTTY did dit dah dah doesn't work in my K3. Re: [Elecraft] OT - Battery ratings
In a message dated 2/9/08 3:24:59 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The real AH ratings for batteries ... the kind we're referring to in this topic ... are difficult to learn. Most automotive-related ratings are specified incranking amperes, and this is -not- the rating that of interest here. Agreed. That's because amp-hour rating doesn't mean much by itself in auto applications. It's consumer hype. Not at all. A modern car battery really has only two jobs: 1) To deliver the enormous currents required to start the engine, in all temperatures and after having sat idle for long periods of time. 2) To power the electrical system for short periods when the engine isn't running or the charging system fails. 1) is the main job, 2) is secondary. Modern alternator/charging systems are designed to power everything on the car with the engine at idle. What we hams want for backup (small currents for long periods of time) is the opposite of what an engine-cranking battery is built to do. I'm retired from an electric utility's communications department where we used various typed of LARGE battery banks. Our microwave stations all had large battery banks. I work in railroad signalling, with similar requirements. The battery banks can get quite impressive, such as sixty 420 AH lead-acid cells for the switch machines - and that's one bank in one medium-size location. For standby service, some RRs use wet-cell NiCads, made by SAFT and other companies. They have better regulation, longer life, and tolerate things like being discharged down to almost nothing. They also stand extreme temperatures better. But they are only 1.25 volts per cell and cost more than lead-acid. Two other factors: Car batteries have to tolerate not only heat and cold but shock and vibration. Stationary batteries usually have much better conditions. Amp-hour ratings are dependent on discharge rate and final voltage - the higher the rate and/or final voltage, the lower the apparent amp-hours. A typical rating is 8 hours and 1.75 volts per cell such as 40 AH at the 8 hour rate, to 1.75 volts per cell, which means that a fully-charged new battery can deliver 5 amps for 8 hours before its voltage falls to the specified 1.75 volts per cell. (Note that 1.75 volts per cell in a six-cell battery is only 10.5 volts) At higher rates, the same battery will appear to have fewer AH - at a discharge rate of 10 A, it may only last 2 hours before reaching 1.75 volts per cell. OTOH, at low rates the cell may deliver much more than the 8 hour rating. Similar results from accepting higher or lower final volts-per-cell. 73 de Jim N2EY ** Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. [Elecraft] K2 Two Alien Problems
OK, only one is Elecraft-related. 1. Not Elecraft One: 15m RTTY, K2/100 feeding amp to 500W, DC muffin fan on KPA100 heatsink, tower is ENE of the back corner of the house about 15m away, beam at 070. All is well. Turn antenna to WNW [starting to get over the house], and when I transmit, the fan stops. While transmitting, turn beam back to 070 [away from house], and fan slowly speeds up. This happens when I have the fan on the K2 running but I'm transmitting on my soon-to-be-replaced TS-850 at 500W from the amp too. Ideas welcome, no full-moon stories please. 2. Elecraft one [I think]: My RTTY set-up is really minimalist. Sound card feeds the mic input, headphone jack feeds the sound card input, VOX keys the radio, a splitter feeds a little RS audio amp to my headphones. It's about the complexity I can handle with the gap between RTTY contests. Regardless of band, I have a very low rush-rush sound in the cans. If you remember the movie Contact, it sounds like the alien prime number signal before we did all the DSP to it and found other stuff. Just rush-rush-rush about once a second. [I tried counting them, but so far, no prime numbers, I don't think it's ET]. I'm close to deaf so it may be a lot louder than I think, but it doesn't show up, that I can tell, on the MMTTY displays. It changes character when I am tuning the K2. It also will change intensity when I move the headphone cord. I can make it stop by tuning the radio real fast. This does not happen when I'm on the 850 [or FT-847]. It doesn't bother me all that much, just curious. Ideas welcome, let's leave full moon stories out of this. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2008 Cal QSO Party 4-5 Oct 08 - www.cqp.org ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Rob Sherwood's K3 test data -- quick summary
Rob Sherwood, NC0B, an independent and well-known receiver performance specialist, has completed his K3 receiver tests. We're pleased with the results, which will place the K3 at the top of his comparison chart. Rob will be updating his web site in a few days. For now, I'll just mention a couple of his numbers (with his permission). Elecraft K3, S/N 00149, 20 meters, preamp off: Dynamic Range 20 kHz 104 dB Dynamic Range 5 kHz 102 Dynamic Range 2 kHz 101* * with 200 Hz 5-pole filter Blocking above noise floor at 100 kHz spacing, AGC On: 140 dB Phase noise (normalized) at 10 kHz spacing: 138 dBc/Hz Rob performs some tests differently that we (and the ARRL) do, but in general we're all in close agreement. Note that the unit under test had only Elecraft 5-pole filters. Our tests show the 8-pole filters to be as good or better, and we sent some of them to Rob to test when he gets a chance. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K1...
Don, Thanks for the K1 info. Is there ay reason you cant make the K1 tune higher in freq by tuning the knob clockwise? I think the manual said it tunes the other way... No one makes a 15 turn 10K pot? That would make it tune nice I suppose.. A properly operating K2 does not have the problems you suggest - the tuning 'pops' are the result of an open RFC15, and it covers all bands. The K2 receiver is more sensitive than the K1, so you may want to reconsider your choice.] I was talking about the reported little tics as the rig is tuned, something switches in the circuit that generates the LO frequency, I read it in the K2 manual. I never noticed it till I read about it here, and I cant say it bothered me, but it is there..(or was on my K2)... I dont think you can get rid of the slight frequency changes as you change filters, or am I wrong about that? 73, Don W3FPR Thanks for the info, I cant wait to get the K1 to play with but its back orderd Brett N2DTS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. (Sidenote: Lenny Bernstein and Steven Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics to the play so you should be able to figure out the movie.) Weather has changed in just the last two days. Instead of incessant snow we are now getting a little rain and it is warming. The snow is still pretty deep but I was able to drive all the way home today without having to get out and turn the lockouts on my hubs. Spring may or may not be on its way but I am burning a bit less wood. That's good because I am about to start on the last pile I've cut. The sun has sent out a little burst which may hit the Earth tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully that will perk things up a bit so we can have a couple good nets. As the sun moves further north we are gaining more daylight so working the east will be getting easier.
