[Elecraft] K2 mojo lives on

I performed the reset and within 10 seconds all the readings were normal.
Good news for my class because the students didn't make any mistakes and the

Also, more convincing evidence the Mojo lives on - maybe more so because of

Each firmware version completely replaces its predecessor. There is no need
to load each intermediate version, just the most recent available.

[Elecraft] PC control of the K2

2008-03-15 Thread n0jrn

Got the KIO2 installed tonight .

Played with it for a bit I need to spend some time figuring out Writelog and
the setup.Been too long since I used it. :-)

Just curious, will the KIO2 support sending CW from the PC or does it
require another interface of some sort?

For those of you using PC control, how did you set it up?

How are you feeding audio to the PC and back ??

Thanks & 72

[Elecraft] Where's the bass?

2008-03-15 Thread Don Rasmussen
Steve - glad to see you on board, bet you are tickled
with K3. You must have just gotten it, and like me,
dialed it out to see what this baby can do! It's still
early in the development, so some things like ESSB
transmit, subRx code, FM, and memory scan are still on
the drawing board. I'm told < 300hz audio is coming,
but have seen nothing in print to that effect. You can
beef up the audio at 300-500 with the EQ if you want,
the audio sounds full and rich, but alas it will leave
the subwoofer out of the loop.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net

2008-03-15 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
Verizon has made my Internet access into an interesting exercise of moving
computers, phone lines, and Kevin around. I am working from home but on
another phone line, with another computer, and from another room. It seems the
fuse panel on one of their boards fried itself and took out all of the lines on
the board. They now have a trailer about seven miles from here which takes
care of some of the phone lines. I don't have my normal computer telephone
line yet. Maybe during the coming week they will get it up and running again.
It would be nice if they allowed 52 kB/S speeds but that would be asking too
much ;)
I have changed the times a little to conform to what we had a few weeks ago.
This keeps the nets at the same local times. I will eat dinner after the
second net is done. When the sun comes back a little more we may change the
second net later in the day. I am not sure yet how this will work out.
Propagation was alright this week but not stellar. I did have a couple
contacts on 20 and another on 40 meters which worked but not well enough to
chat long. The school term is almost over so I will have more time on my hands
after Tuesday. I may have to take up some other hobby to keep myself occupied
:) But, spring should be here soon so I can cut more wood, work on the house,
build a new greenhouse, build the deck out back, work on the roof, and
generally work around the property. That may keep me off the streets!

I am going to send this while the phone is still working. I will be on the
air tomorrow but may not be on the Internet. Who can tell?

Please join us tomorrow evening.

[Elecraft] K2 problems

2008-03-15 Thread wsm
Hello
I'm assembling my second K2 and am having a bit of a problem.
I am more of an operator than techniciation.
Everything went good up until the second test. At that point
my BFO wasn't working. While trying to find out why it wasn't
working, I did something that made the frequency counter and volt
meter stop working.
First off, my 8 volt regulator on the control board is only
putting out 7.6 volts. Is that enough to work ok?
Second, none of the voltages on control board U2 are anywhere
near where they should be, except pin 8 which is 7.63 volts.
Pins 1,2,and 3 have 3.4 volts instead of 6.9. Pins 5,6, and
7 have only 3.69 volts instead of 7.3.
Control board U7 has 0 volts instead of 5 volts on pin 5, and 5
volts instead of 0 volts on pin 6. Could this be another manual
error, it says they should be the opposite.
U6 has the voltages on pin 24 and 25 reversed, according to the
manual, pin 24 actually has 0 volts and 25 has 4.9 volts.
Could any of this be my problem, or am I looking in the wrong
place like I normally do!
Any help appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] VP6DX -- the true story ?

2008-03-15 Thread David Woolley (E.L)

Eric Scace K3NA wrote:
In my limited understanding of the K3 signal path, there is always a
DSP operation on the signal for filtering. While noise blanking, noise
reduction, and audio effects can all be switched off, I don't know if it
is possible to remove ALL digital signal processing from the signal
path; i.e., operate only with the crystal filters.

The product detector (or FM discriminator) is implemented in the DSP
firmware, so, if you could bypass the DSP, you would have a signal at
the final IF frequency (15kHz?), not a baseband one.

[Elecraft] KAF2-Assembly questions

2008-03-15 Thread Fred Jensen

I'm building the KAF2 Audio Filter. Two questions for whoever knows:

1. I mounted the two trimmer pots on the top side of the board even
though their outline is on the bottom. Hope that's right, it didn't
make sense to have an adjustable component on the bottom.

2. I'm about to mount the socket for U2 on top however its outline is
also on the bottom.

First instruction says, "If an assembly step does not specify top or
bottom, the component should be installed on the top side." Can I take
the manual at its word and put the U2 socket on the top?

[Elecraft] k2 - IF amplifier alignment..

2008-03-15 Thread sergio

for some reason, i cannot find the internal signal that i am supposed
to find on 7000. i have slow scanned past it several times.. and
cannot find it..

i did the 40 meter band pass filter alignment, and with an antenna
hooked up, i can hear plenty of signals to adjust to.. but when i
unplug the antenna, and look for a signal around 7000.. no dice..

anyone have any ideas?

other than that, this k2 is ALMOST ready to put on the air (and make
room for more projects..)

front panel temperature.  However, I moved on to do the PA one and
moving the VFO dial does absolutely nothing - its 2 'dashes' where the
temperature should be.    I haven't updated the firmware yet so that
could possibly be the problem though is there any other possible
problem?

the VFO dial does absolutely nothing - its 2 'dashes' where the
temperature should be.I haven't updated the firmware yet so that could
possibly be the problem though is there any other possible problem?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 "CW via CAT Command"?

2008-03-15 Thread rkayakr

Doug
I can confirm that you can send CW by cat command from both Ham Radio
Deluxe and DM780. The macros I use have the same syntax as for the K2.

You could also try sending the macro command through the downloaded
program. If they work in the downloaded you know you have the syntax right.

Re: [Elecraft] Auto ATU for K3 + Amplifier

2008-03-15 Thread rkayakr

Mike

I use the MFJ 994B tuner with an ALS-600 amp. I used the same setup with
my K2 and have had no problems. Now that the MFJ-998 tuner is available I
would pop for the extra capacity if I had it to do over. The 998 will
automatically lock out the amp when the tuner is tuning.

The unfortunate thing about the Elecraft rigs is that there is no way to
put them in tune mode from an outside line, nor do they generate a signal
out when put in tune. I haven't found any way to get them to one touch tune
like other rigs. Yes, I've mentioned it before. Since the development list
is not public, one never knows if a requested feature is ever coming or not.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AF / RF knob placement

I just noticed that the picture of the K3 on the Elecraft website shows the
AF knob below the RF knob. In looking at my K3 I notice that the AF knob is
now on top of the RF knob. Anyone know why this was changed?

The front panel legends changed slightly as a result of feedback and and
development during the initial month of two of field testing. The
picture on the website is out of date.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 "CW via CAT Command"?

MixW 2.18. It's got a clicky box for "CW by CAT" and a search of the
MixW mailing list finds a couple of references to people who got it to
work. The Kenwood's and the Elecraft's share the KY command, which is
what I assume is being used.

What version of MixW are you using, Doug? I never used the latest version,
and probably won't now since I have switched to Linux, but as far as I know
MixW sends CW by keying one of the RS-232 control lines (according to which
one you set up on the CAT configuration menu.) It can do TX/RX switching
using CAT commands but it does not send CW using CAT to the best of my
   knowledge.

Your knowledge is incomplete, apparently.

If you download the KCommunicate from my website then this will send CW
using CAT. It also reads and writes MixW compatible log files. I made a
couple of hundred contacts with it in the CQ WW contest last year so you
should find it is pretty stable. That version dates from before I had a K3
so you should select K2 in the configuration.

Since I am now using Linux I will not be releasing another Windows version
any time soon but I have rather lost interest in the program anyway since
the main point of it was to be able to use the K3's built in CW, PSK and
RTTY decoders and there is currently no way to get the decoded text on to
the computer screen. The text stream enabled with the TT1 command conflicts
with the use of CAT control commands.

Perhaps in future this problem will be addressed in the K3, especially
since having the second RX will compound the problem.

Of course, with CW Skimmer, a whole new dimension has been added to
automated CW copy.

Re: [Elecraft] Auto ATU for K3 + Amplifier

2008-03-15 Thread Robert Tellefsen
Here is something for you to check. May work,
may not.

The K2 has provision for a keying output closure
to key amps and such. The K3 does also.
Check to see if it is providing its closure during
TUNE as well as during TX. That might give you
the closure you need to stir your ATU to action.

Good luck and 73

[Elecraft] KDVR3 Digital Voice Recorder

2008-03-15 Thread Bob
Does anyone know if the K3 allows one to record what the receiver is
hearing and then immediately take that recording and transmit it? For
instance when a station who I am in a QSO with wants an audio report,
it would be handy to immediately play back (over the air) what you are
receiving. On my IC-7000, I can record, but I can not play back
during transmit and I wish I could.

Thanks in advance for any feedback or speculation as to how this
recorder will work.

[Elecraft] K3 SO-239 Connectors

2008-03-15 Thread Paul Christensen
As indicated earlier, I included a link to a photo that shows my K3's
upgraded Amphenol SO-239 connectors.

216.229.20.37/images/K3.jpg

The Mouser catalog P/N is 523-83-798. The Amphenol P/N is 83-798.

In spending some time reviewing the placement of the K3's SO-239 connectors,
the RF connector mounting configuration can be improved with only minor
re-work as shown below. In the link to the following photo, you will see the
two panel-mounted SO-239 connectors with three (3) solder-lugs added as well
as the KAT3 ATU Board.

216.229.20.37/images/K3-1.jpg

The K3 comes with both the ANT 1 and ANT 2 SO-239 connections routed to the
KAT3 board with only a single-ended wire. The connectors' RF return path
necessarily relies upon clean, tight, but unbonded connections through the
chassis and also through a path of screws washers, and an aluminum spacer
that holds the KAT3 to the K3' side panel. In the photo, you will see that
the final RF attachment point to the KAT3 is through a zinc-plated,
Phillips-head screw located at the upper left of the board. This is the
same attachment point whether its modified or unmodified. Only, in the
modified layout, bus wire connects the SO-239 connectors straight to the
zinc screw connection point. Removal of the KAT3 board is just as easy as
it was before. It's now also possible to replace the aluminum spacer with a
ceramic or fiber spacer which, will force all RF current along the new buss
wire and keep high RF current from circulating through the K3's chassis.

At 100W of RF, I am not completely comfortable with the existing arrangement
given my past experiences with transceivers of other manufacturer who
similarly use single-ended RF wiring techniques and rely upon good chassis
and hardware connections for the RF return path. In almost all cases where
RF ingress was an issue, those cases were resolved by creating a direct RF
return path from the antenna connectors, rather than allowing 100% of the RF
current to flow and circulate through the chassis. True, in a bonded
configuration like this, the chassis will still allow for some RF current,
but the level of chassis RF current can be reduced by either: (i) running a
short buss wire from a solder-lug on the SO-239 connectors to the KAT3; or
(ii) using short (3") coaxial cable from the SO-239s to the KAT3 with
shields bonded at both ends. I suspect that ANT 1/ANT 2 antenna port
isolation may be improved by using the coaxial option.

Since the wire length between the KAT3 and SO-239 connectors is so short, I
decided to use #20 AWG buss wire with solder-lugs, rather than use coaxial
cable, although ideally, something like 2 or 3-inch cuts of RG-174 with
Teflon dielectric would be ideal. I may switch to that at a later point and
verify port isolation results.

[Elecraft] re using Kenwood SM-220 panadapter with K3

2008-03-15 Thread Fern Rivard
Has anyone been sucessful in using the Kenwood SM-220 as a band scope
looking at the IF of the K3? The IF's of the kenwood radio or the K3 are very
close with only about 600 khz difference so it's a simple matter to tweek the
oscillator trimmer in the SM-220 to adjust that. However, I get a lot of
interaction between the SM-220 and the K3. I've also tried using a 10 db
attenuator pad but still get erratic results.

Re: [Elecraft] Auto ATU for K3 + Amplifier

2008-03-15 Thread T. David Yarnes
The "ATU Tune" button is for the internal tuner, which you
apparently don't have. But if you push the "Xmit" button"
to the left (hold it for a second or so), you should get
what you need I think.

Thanks for the responses so far. I am currently using a
Z11 auto tuner at

10W.

Can anyone help me with a configuration setting? What I
would like to happen
is for something useful to happen when I press the ATU
Tune button on the
K3. What it should do is provide a low power signal and
toggle a tune line.
So far all I can get it to do it tell me the KAT3 is not
installed, which I

know already.

Having lived with my K3 for almost 24 hours, I find one of
the major design
flaws in the K3 is the lack of antenna outputs for those
of us who don't
need an ATU built in. for HF only it is understandable,
but it is crazy
considering the rig does 6m. The ANT button appears
redundant, I am sure we
could have a PCB with two or 3 RF connectors and a relay
or two. I am not
sure I really like the way the SO239 is connected - but I
suppose it is only
HF... Operating without the right side panel (don't ask)
the wire loop
certainly picks up lots of local noise from my PC and
monitor.

The correct format for enclosing URLs in email is with no URL: and with
no spaces within the angle brackets. If you find you need the spaces it
is probably to stop the sending email client from recognizing it as a
URL (I think some strip the angle brackets in rich text and may forget
to put them back in plain text).

However, if mail is not getting through because it contains full URLs I
would suspect the real problem is a spam filter somewhere down the line,
as URLs in email are a spam indicator.

Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want.
RFC1855 says there should be an address here, but, in a world of spam,
that is no longer good advice, as archive address hiding may not work.

That's great news. My FM filter seems to be stuck in transit somewhere, but
hopefully it will arrive by the time the firmware is working!

One suggestion that occurs to me (which you may already have thought of) is
have you incorporated two preset levels of FM deviation, for HF and VHF? I
used to find that HF rigs transverted to VHF have weak modulation because
the deviation level used on HF is lower than on VHF. It's probably less of a
problem now that 12.5kHz spacing is used on VHF but when 25kHz spacing was
used, with comparably wider filters, the difference was noticeable when
compared to dedicated 2m rigs.

The UP/DOWN buttons on the Kenwood MC-43S switch between VFO A and VFO B
on the K2. I presume that the same will eventually apply to the K3 in
the interests of compatibility.
