RE: [Elecraft] K3 filter selection

2008-04-23 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A
Chris,

Many people like the 1.8. I have the 2.1 Inrad combo in my ol' MP.
Pretty narrow to my ears. And I can use the shift width controls to
decrease the bandwidth some more.

I ordered the 2.1 for my K3.
If I need to knock out something, I'm convinced that the DSP filtering
will make it so. Otherwise we would not need it for bandwidth
adjustments.

Suggestions based on experience much appreciated.

2008-04-23 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
I have the 1.8 and like it - it's not hard to get SSB down to that and
still hear clearly if you adjust it properly.
I always start at 2.8KHz and then bring in the filter. On LSB, start
by adjusting the Hi cut until you've almost got to 1.8KHZ, then adjust
the Lo cut and maybe the high cut again and what for the filter to
switch, assuming you started with 2.7 or 2.8. Haven't tried yet on USB
- not much around on higher bands, guess you'd work that the other way.

[Elecraft] Radios on airlines

2008-04-23 Thread jac
From long experience, including a trip to ZS6 with my K2 wrapped in newspaper
in a plastic carrier bag, just days after 911.

1. keep the radio and/or parts in hand baggage. I have even hand carried a
TenTec Hercules II to Sevierville and back from UK with only one person
asking me to open the bag ! No-one asked to see my K3.

2. NEVER ever say you have something unusual ! I made that mistake with a an
Omni-V and had to get personal clearance from the plane captain before they
would even x-ray the thing (at Philadelphia.) And others were shoving
laptops, record players and all sorts of junk through x-ray without being
challenged.

3. Don't panic - whatever happens ! If you get visibly agitated, so will
security. See 1 above. Its just my travel radio ... worked all the way to
ZS6 from UK via Amsterdam, and back again.

I once took what would looked on camera as a hand grenade, same shape, size and
bits of wire coming out of it - actually a motor on a prony brake - thro UK and
USA airports and not challenged. I suggested their equipment might need
attention and was threatened by an armed plain-clothes person at JFK!
On the other hand I was politely asked what that strange thing in my bag was at
Friedrichshafen - it was a large glass envelope vacuum relay. I was delighted
to show the guard who asked have you come from the ham radio show?

Keep your trap shut is the best advice it seems.

Add me to the list of those wanting plenty of sidetone volume. I just
ordered my K3 so I don't know how low it is but I am hearing impaired so
it's important that there is good volume for me. I take my hearing aids off
when using headphones and I turn the volume up to compensate.

At what I feel is a comfortable listening level, QSK is difficult because

I have read the earlier threads and a return to a maximum level of 60

[Elecraft] K1 20 meter band

2008-04-23 Thread ken . holland

Hello all, I'm new to the list. I have a K1 and the 20 meter band has
died. The rig worked nicely for almost a yr, then 20 meters has no receive
or transmit. The 22.000 mhz crystal does not oscillate... I can not pick
up even a peep on my 756Pro. The other 3 bands work nicely - 40, 30, and
17 meter bands I have the 4 band module.

Is there anything in the circuit I should be looking at before ordering a
new crystal?

Just replace the crystal and it should begin working again. After
replacing the crystal, you may need to adjust the CAL OPF setting to
restore correct dial calibration on 20 meters.

Hi folks. I'm finishing a new K2 for a friend. When I tried to perform the 40m

happens if the output power is set to anything above 0.3 watts. This only
happens on 40 meters. I was able to peak the output on all the other bands
normally. The Cal Cur is set to 2.5.
I've got the little RF probe built. could someone point me in the right
direction as to where to look for the problem?
Thank you verry much!

Look at the schematic for RF Board sheet 3 toward the lower right and

I find it very contradictory that I cannot take my small,
pocket knife (blade maybe 1 to 2 inches long or so), but I
can take sharp pointed, metal scissors on board so long as
they are less than 4 inches! As for batteries, I've never
had them question those. I carry several for use with my
ATS3 QRP rig. Usually I just carry AA's, but on occasion I
have carried a 12V 5 amp hour battery on board, and they
said nothing about it.

Thanks Don! I checked every component in the 40/60m LPF, all caps are the
correct value, both inductors have correct windings, hit all solder points
again. Still have the same problem.
Also,
On 40 meters, even with power output set to 1.0 watt. The current display
shoots straight up to 2.5 (max) On all other bands with power set to 1.0 watt,
the current only goes to about .95
Also,
With the power output at 1.0 watt, I compared the RF out at the antenna jack.
It's roughly the same for 40 and 30 meters, and I have no problem with 30
meters.

[Elecraft] K3 - Output power instability?

2008-04-23 Thread Stewart Rolfe
Whilst transmitting today on CW (QSK) at full power, I've noticed on a
couple of occasions the power meter showing a fairly sudden drop in
power to around 45 or so watts. It gradually returns to full power and
then will behave normally for long periods. Each time this has happened
the radio has been on 80m and the ATU has been in circuit; the power
setting remains at 100 watts the whole time and the current meter on the
power supply does suggest that the power is indeed falling. The SWR
indication remains low and the PA temp stays around 37 deg.

If it continues to happen I will make more careful observations but as
an initial step thought I'd see if anyone has experienced this or has
any idea of what may be going on.

[Elecraft] K2/10 low battery message

2008-04-23 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
Has anyone ever had their low battery mesage
keep coming on every five minutes on their k2/10.
Where does this message originate from?
I have re-soldered every joint from the power
input up to the power switch and can't figure out
where the power circuit goes from there.
All components check good up to that point.
I even re-soldered the power switch. Anyone ever
have a bad power switch? The low battery
messages never comes on during transmit.
I have the K2/10 connected to the same 30 amp
power supply that I used on my K2/100, and
I never had a low battery message on it.
I don't have a battery installed so that is not
the problem.
I never got this message on my K2/100 running
100 watts, so I believe the problem is in the K2.
Any one know where to start looking?

Is there some menu setting that would make the K2

[Elecraft] K3: Wonder when I'll get it

2008-04-23 Thread Joseph M. Durnal
I'm planning for field day and trying to decided if I should just
assume that the K3 I ordered on January 31 will arrive in time, June 6
to have a couple of weekends to build it (club's hamfest is June 15,
so that weekend is out!). It looks like the pace has picked up a bit,
but I don't think it has picked up enough for me to get it in May as I
originally expected. Any comments?

Re: [Elecraft] K2/10 low battery message

2008-04-23 Thread Don Wilhelm

Scott,

The K2 does not really know whether the power being supplied to it is
from a battery or not - so read that indication as Power voltage is low.

One of 2 (maybe 3) situations exist with your K2.
1) the power supply voltage seen by your K2 is really too low. Measure
the voltage at the cathode of D12 with your DMM during transmit (TUNE is
OK) at full power output into a dummy load. If the voltage drops
substantially, then be certain your power cord has adequate current
carrying capacity and that your power supply is not dropping the voltage
under load (measure during transmit directly at the power supply terminals).
2) The jumper at Control Board P7 is either missing or is plugged onto
the EXT pins. If you have an older K2 (serial less than 3000), you have
a switch rather than a jumper and its position may get bumped to the EXT
position easily (I have seen one switch that had failed on the INT side).
3) If all the above are checked out and found to be OK, you may have a
problem with Control Board U3B, R9 or R10. You should be able to check
these for proper operation by tapping the DISPLAY button and seeing what
voltage is indicated on the LCD. If it is 0.3 volts less than the input
voltage, then these circuits are working OK.

[Elecraft] K2 on school field trip

2008-04-23 Thread Brian Lloyd
We just took a three-day field trip with the older kids from the
school up to Lake Tahoe. I took the K2 along with my SGC-231 tuner and
some wire. We used a 40' end-fed wire with a counterpoise. We got on
the air and had reasonable luck on 80M (phone) but no luck on 40M or
20M. The problem with 10W and a good receiver is that you can hear
everyone else just great but they can't hear you. Several times we
answered CQs on 40 and 20 with not even a hint of response from the
other station.

Yes, we should have operated CW but the kids are not quite ready to
copy QSO as they are only mostly through learning the alphabet and
haven't covered numbers and punctuation characters. Soon.

John,

If your K3 has MCU and DSP levels that are lower than what is currently
available at the Elecraft website, go ahead and load the latest released
firmware. If your K3 already has the levels that are on the website,
yes a new release will be forthcoming in due time.

Do you have the latest firmware loaded? As I recall, there were some

Re: [Elecraft] K3 with SteppIR

2008-04-23 Thread VE3NFK

Hi Jim

I use the K3 with TRX-Manager and my 4el SteppIR.
The K3 is on COM 13 (an FTDI USB-serial adapter) and the SteppIR is
'Synchro' on COM 12 4800 baud.

The SteppIR happily follows my K3 around.

Disclaimer - I am a Beta tester for TRX.

PS - I know Laurent, the author of TRX will be tweaking his software to take
advantage of the K3's attributes.

Since the K3 is outputting to a serial port it sounds

your K2 -- check out the application note posted at
elecraft.com.

Yes, I have done that. I was going throw together a cable to go into
the mic input as I have a spare 8-pin mic connector floating around.

essentially all you need is a stereo
cable on receive, a mic connector and a few parts on
transmit, and some means to do the T/R switching.

VOX. But one of the advantages of the K2 is using the narrow filter on
PSK so that only the desired signal affects the AGC. That implies
doing my tuning with the main tuning rather than just point-n-click on
the computer. Frankly I find that being able to hear the audio is very
helpful in tuning to get the signal to the center of the passband.
That means I need to hear the signal at the same time I am feeding it
to my computer.

The kids will 'resonate' with PSK31 based upon their
other PC experiences.

Surprisingly they have not taken to PSK31 at all. I have one of the
school computers connected to the Icom IC-706mkII through a
RigBlaster. (The IC-706 sucks as a PSK rig.) I also built a 1W PSK31
rig at school (a Small Wonder PSK-20) and the kids occasionally use
that as well. They would much rather get on the local repeater or call
CQ on 20M. Who knows.

Remember to run the K2 at approx half power when doing
the digital modes !!

I would expect that to prevent too much temperature rise on the
finals. We are, after all, only talking 3dB.

I have seen PSK31 at field day, and it tends to be
rather tough in the pile-ups -- so calling CQ may be
preferred if you run QRP-battery/solar. Meanwhile
PSK31 may be ideal for non-contest operating with your
youth.

Definitely. Good point on using PSK on field day. I wasn't thinking
about that. We certainly could.

This is NOT the ideal time for QRP-SSB ! You just
might need that amp.

Definitely. The kids are already making progress on it. I hope to have
it done by the end of school (May 31). As much as I like QRP, this is
not the time for QRP in anything except CW, PSK, or some form of MFSK.

Do check the calendar for kids-day events, as this may
charm them more than an array of 599 my state-is
reports. And consider scheds to other schools or
kids. Here in Maryland, a contact station is KI3DS.

I have been coordinating with other schools through the ARRL program.
The major problem has been the bands being dead and a high noise level
at the school QTH.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.
