RE: [Elecraft] K1 Used in Montana Ham Rescue...
Sri OT at the beginning, but I get back to radio topics at the end. Mike wrote: It seems to me that shock is often psychologically induced. In emergency medicine the term shock usually refers to hypovolaemic shock which is caused by large volume bleeding. Excessive blood loss reduces the ability to get oxygen to the cells. The body can compensate for some blood loss, but past a certain point death will occur within minutes. Typical situations where hypovolaemic shock may occur include external bleeding, or internal bleeding secondary to femur or pelvic fractures, or internal abdominal injury. Psychological shock doesn't refer to a particular medical problem, but is a combination of imaginary or real symptoms including anxiety, panic, reaction to pain, natural adrenaline reaction etc, etc. Psychological shock is not particularly relevant in an emergency situation, except when it causes inappropriate reactions to the emergency. In my limited experience, most people with serious injuries react in a measured and sensible way, as did Mike with his leg fracture. As a rule-of-thumb, those who scream and yell and make a big fuss usually have only minor injuries. It certainly emphasizes many of the reasons why I consider HF QRP gear to be a priority inclusion for backwoods outings like this. For those who may be interested, the Canterbury Mountain Radio Service www.mountainradio.co.nz hires out HF QRP radios to the general public for hiking, mountaineering, and other back-country travel here in ZL. Main operating frequency is 3261 kHz USB. There are typically about 12 emergency calls handled per year. The service works well, providing fairly reliable coverage of the South Island of New Zealand. Schedules occur daily at 0630 or 0730 UTC with weather reports and message passing. There is also a phone patch system available. The antennae are of NVIS design, so DX signals will likely be poor, but any signal reports would be gratefully received. The main disadvantage of HF radio in an emergency is that you have to put the antenna up! This can be difficult to do if you have serious injuries. For this reason HF radio is best suited to those travelling in a group. For lone hikers a better solution is to carry a 407 MHz personal locator beacon www.beacons.org.nz. In ZL there will always be a search and rescue response to a PLB activation. I don't know how well they are supported in other countries, but it is a global system. 73 Paul ZL3IN ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. And apparently demand is still pretty strong. Let's see, 2,000 K3's at an average cost of $2,000, that's about $4 million! That's probably low, and an average cost of $3,000 might be a better guess, which would mean $6 million! Not too shabby! RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 + Microham, the result
Firstly, thanks to everyone who replied to me, either direct or via the list. With a clear head and a fresh day, the K3 now transmits WSJT tones as expected. The major stumbling block was simple in the end... Always make sure there's sound coming out of the PC!! How it happened I can't say, I simply don't know, but the sound out was muted... Yeah, now don't I feel a dumbo :-) Once that was sorted, I had tones but only just... The next issue was 'line in' gain, further reading found the right setting in the menu to increase the gain and hey presto, it works fine! So, thanks to all who responded, all very helpful suggestions and ideas. 73 Andy http://gd0tep.com -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of gd0tep Sent: 02 October 2008 19:17 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 + Microham? Recent tests in our lab and by another dedicated K3 AM user showed that it was adding distortion but not punch. The new code uses the MIC AGC system to limit the peak level, and allows more AM modulation. We'll be revisiting AM compression in the future. My reason for troubleshooting is there is NO SOUND. I can hear the sidetone when I turn it on. I cannot hear the 7000hz tone. 1. My reference oscillator output is 0.511.a little low. 2. VCO output is okay. 3. BFO output is okay. 4. Mixer, I.F. amplifier, Crystal filter = 0.00 vdc. So, I started with the control board. U1 voltages are okay. U3 voltages are okay. U4 is a little low at 7.80 vdc. U5 is perfect. U6-U10 are okay. The problems: 1. U2 voltages are around 3.27 vdc instead of 6.9 vdc input voltage is 7.80 on pin 8. I didn't want to move on to the RF board without finding the problem with the Control Board. Do you have any suggestions for finding where the U2 voltages are dropping off. When I adjusted the AGC in step 5 page 48, I was only able to get 3.71 vdc. Ron, KE5QDA ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The constant carrier power level when TUNE is pressed appears to be correct. However in PSK31 mode I am getting almost full scale on the internal meter when 40W is dialled up. When the PSK software sends a tune signal (pure tone) an external power meter shows about twice the amount of power that has been specified. On SSB at 100W the internal meter seems to be at full scale most of the time as well. Has anyone else experienced this, and what is the solution? - Julian, G4ILO. RE: [Elecraft] [K3] Power too high in PSK31 / SSB
I worked some PSK today at 20 watts and it seems to be fine. Just a couple of bars on the RF meter when I have the power dialed to 20 watts. I running the latest beta (2.45) but I didn't have any problem with 2.38. No compression, mic gain turned down so that the ALC just barely makes one bar. [Elecraft] K3 #1851 is (mostly) alive!
Hi all! Another K3 has been built! K3 #1851 was ordered on 17 June, shipped on 30 September and was delivered and subsequently built today, 3 October. It's a K3/100, with KAT3, KBPF3, and KXV3. It has the stock 2,7 kHz, FM and 400 Hz filters. The KRX3 and accompanying filters are on back-order (expected in about two months). All calibrations and tests passed, but while trying the rig out on 40 meters, a nasty problem turned up. Transmissing at full power let some of the smoke out. I understand the desired operating practice is to keep the smoke inside at all times. After removing the top cover and doing some more tests at reduced power (30 to 50W), I found out that one toroid on the KAT3 board is getting very hot. It is the blue toroid, possibly labeled K16 (can't quite see) which has 3 windings on it. I'm guessing this toroid is part of the circuit sensing the reflected power. The problem occurs only when transmitting on 40 meters into my antenna (a 2x24 meters doublet), using the KAT3 in AUTO mode. The MFJ-949E external ATU sits in-line, connected with about two feet of coax, but is switched to bypass mode. Interestingly, the MFJ does show a very high SWR (1:6 or worse), while the K3 shows a perfect 1:1 match! The problem with the heating occurs only on 40 meters; on other bands it stays cool. Still, on these other bands, the external tuner shows high readings too. When transmitting into the MFJs dummy load, both the K3 and the MFJ agree that the SWR is perfect. Does anyone know what could cause this? FWIW, I am still using the factory-supplied firmware (MCU 2.38 and DSP 1.90). Re: [Elecraft] K2 Troubleshooting
Ron, Is this a newly built K2 that has not worked before, or has it once worked and has now failed? The DC voltage chart listings for the Control Board are for the condition that the Front Panel is removed. If you have the Front Panel plugged in, the U2 voltages will be quited different. I assume you are referring to Control Board U2 pins 1, 2, and 3 rather than pins 5, 6, and 7. With the Front panel in place and the RF Gain at maximum, U2 pin 5 should be set using the AGC Threshold control to 3.8 volts - check that first. If you are unable to achieve 3.8 volts, then check the voltage of the 8 volt regulator and set the U2 pin 5 voltage to 47% of the regulator output (but not less than 3.65 volts). Back up a bit and make some other checks. 1) Check out the 'stupid' things first - did you remove the KDSP2 or KAF2 from the Control Board? That will cause no audio. Did you remove the KSB2 and fail to insert the jumpers? Did you remove the KNB2 and not replace the jumper? Do you have either the K60XV option or the K160RX option not plugged in? Each of these options will stop receive if removed and the appropriate jumpers are not installed. Do you have the K160RX installed and RANT turned on for the band in question? 2) If you are receiving a signal of any kind, does the S-meter move? Tune around the bands with the preamp on and see if anything gives an s-meter indication. 3) Tap on RF board W3 with a screwdriver tip while the AF gain is set to max - do you hear a click when you do that? If you do, then the IF amplifier, product detector and the AF Amp on the Control Board have a path capable of passing the signal. 4) If no sound is heard during the test above, try tapping on U11 pin 1 with the screwdriver tip (be careful not to short to other pins). If you hear clicks, then the product detector is working. 5) No clicks above, try U11 pin 4 (using the same caution). If you hear clicks, the audio stages are good. 6) If you have gotten this far and still hear nothing, check the /Mute signal voltage at Control Board U6 pin 17 - if it is near zero, the microprocessor is muting the audio. In receive, this signal will be near 5 volts. If you have not found the problem source by these steps, let us know and we will try to help more. 73, Don W3FPR Ron McCurdy wrote: My reason for troubleshooting is there is NO SOUND. I can hear the sidetone when I turn it on. I cannot hear the 7000hz tone. 1. My reference oscillator output is 0.511…a little low. I didn’t want to move on to the RF board without finding the problem with the Control Board. Do you have any suggestions for finding where the U2 voltages are dropping off. When I adjusted the AGC in step 5 page 48, I was only able to get 3.71 vdc. [Elecraft] K2: PLL Reference Oscillator Problem
On page 47 of the manual, I was testing the frequency counter. I put the counter probe tip to the left side of C22 (actually, it wasn't clear which left side, but I put it to the left facing the panel as it is mounted in the radio). The LCD was jumping all over the place, from about 00200 to about 04200. As I held it there, it tended to move toward the area of 04000, but it never stabilized in any way. I went ahead and built more of the radio to get to page 63. When I attempted the 4MHz Oscillator Calibration on pg 63, I got .00. I'm not sure where to proceed from here. Help!! Re: [Elecraft] K2: PLL Reference Oscillator Problem
Jon, That check of the 4 MHz reference is there to help you determine the correct functioning of the internal counter probe - it has nothing to do with the frequency, but the reading should be steady at 4000.00 MHz (plus or minus 1 count in the last digit). Since your results were variable (it should show a rock solid 4 MHz), something is wrong with your probe or with Control Panel Q9 or Q10 and their associated components. Check your soldering carefully. If you do not know what a good solder connection looks like, I refer you to the soldering article on the Elecraft website. A good solder connection looks like a 'mountain' with a concave slope to it. If your solder connections are convex (look more like 'balls of solder', then the solder pads did not receive enough heat and you have applied excess solder. Wick away the excess and be sure the solder tapers off to an almost invisible edge on both the solder pad and the component lead. I mention this repeatedly because the most common cause of builder failure is excessive solder and inadequate heating of both the solder pad and the component leads. You must get a good reading at the 4 MHz reference oscillator test before proceeding to anything else. Yes, you could have a bad component, but that is way down on the list of failures. Check the values of RP4 and RP5 on the Control Board, and Q9 and Q10. 73, Don W3FPR Jon Perelstein wrote: On page 47 of the manual, I was testing the frequency counter. [Elecraft] re: K3 - 60M channel storage and recall
...unlike most other transceivers the K3 currently lacks ability to switch stored channels (with instant receive) in the manner of a crystal controlled transceiver. Julian, Dave, Tony: I'm not sure I understand what you're asking for. The K3 lets you designate any number of variable-length blocks of channelized frequency memories, then use VFO A to instantly hop among them. You can also do channel-hop scanning within one of these blocks. For example, I have memories 61-65 set up as a channel block for the five U.S. 60-m frequencies. From any band, I can simply recall one of these memories, and the VFO becomes a channel control, just as if the rig were crystal-controlled. Similarly, I have a block set up for 2-m repeaters, etc. Am I missing something? If so, feel free to explain exactly how you'd like the K3 to function in this regard. The present method is simple and easy to use, but I'm open to other suggestions. This is all described in the Owner's Manual (page 39). Please send any problem reports to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For instructions on how to load beta firmware, please see: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm 73, Wayne N6KR * * * MCU 2.46 / DSP 1.92, 10-3-2008 * 40 METER PA CURRENT REDUCTION: This revision corrects the low-pass filter configuration used on 40 m. The 10/12 LPF, not the 6 m LPF, is now used in-line with the 40 m LPF. This optimizes return loss, keeping current at the target level at 100 W (about 20 A). Some K3s may have had 40-m current drain increase running rev 2.45. * NOTE ON AM COMPRESSION: Starting with MCU 2.45/DSP 1.92, speech compression has been disabled in AM mode. We hope to create a more effective compressor for AM in a future revision; the original was adding distortion without increasing “punch”. On the other hand, the available AM modulation level has been increased, and we’re better utilizing the mic AGC system in this mode. --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
