[Elecraft] OT: mapping local noise using the XV144 or XV50

2009-04-13 Thread Mark
For those of you using XV50 or XV144 this might be of use:

Whenever you are not all that happy with that new large yagi antenna
pointed at your favourite direction, it might as well be the local noise
level which keeps you from hearing the dx.
Sure we all know about man-made noise and especially in city
environments this band noise level can be a serious issue. But what is
'serious' exactly? How many dB is your carefull build station, having
super preamps, inches thick coax, low noise figure hardware etc., really
affected on say 50Mhz, 144Mhz? Many are claiming silly static benchmark
0.25 dB noise figure on their front end preamp, but what is happening
in real life at the antenna?
Both a local friend and I have noise issues, each of us in different
directions. He uses XV144+K3, I am using the XV144+K2 and another XV50+K2.
Having an SDR receiver available with the averaging switched in, allowed
us to do some noise mapping on our QTH's.
The measured results are more dramatic than expected and put things into
perspective again.
see at http://pa5mw.blogspot.com/

73 Mark PA5MW

**p.s. I would love to learn from you if you have ever done any site
noise aquisitions on 50Mhz and up. What kind of antenna(s) otehr
hardware did you use, how did you manage to compare/level the found results?

[Elecraft] [K2] K2 Transmitted Phase Noise

2009-04-13 Thread m0trx

Dear All,

A quick search on Nabble produced some posts from several years back discussing
the transmitted phase noise present when using the K2 with the KPA100 PA stage
**see below for links**. However, I was unable to find any firm conclusions to
these discussions i.e. a response from Elecraft itself.

Now it may well be that the output of the K2 conforms to FCC regulations.
However, if the level of phase noise is far greater than that of other
commercial transceivers then I see this as being a problem. I am the owner and
builder of K2 #6593 and am currently considering building the KPA100. It is for
this reason that I am keen to receive any thoughts/conclusions on this matter.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: 'Line In' problems

2009-04-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jason,

Since you can drive the K3 from the mic input, I am wondering if you
have enough signal available to drive the K3 LINE IN at its expected level.

Do you have an in-line attenuator in the cable you are using at the K3
LINE IN? Or are you using an interface box that has an internal
attenuator? If so, you may not be getting enough signal into the LINE
IN jack.

Try connecting the Line-out from the soundcard directly to the K3 LINE
IN jack using a straight stereo cable. The K3 does not need any
interface box or in-line attenuator.

[Elecraft] K3 - 3.06 and KRX3

2009-04-13 Thread Igor Sokolov
I finally got enough courage to upgrade to ver 3.06 and try true
independence with KRX3. Here are some questions that I hope someone can
help me with:
1) I do not have KXV3 installed. I have one tribander connected to ANT1.
Having tuned main RX on 20 using ANT1 I am trying to set SUB RX on 15m using
the same antenna. Firmware does not allow that. It says USE AUX. Is that how
it meant to be? I thought there is internal splitter (which I can use
successfully when using both RX on the same band) and therefore I should be
able to use the same antenna when MAIN and SUB are on the different bands.
It now looks like one more relay would be proper in antenna switching
arrangement. I wish I could choose any mix of ant/rx from the front panel.
Is an external antenna selector the only option for such a flexibility so
far? Or I just miss something?
2) When in the contest I change bands by entering frequency into logger's
call window. Now I have some local noise on 160m and therefore have to use
NB there. For some reasons NB ON setting is not memorized. That means every
time I come back to 160m from any other band I have to switch NB ON again.
Is that a bug or is that done on purpose?
3) Having read all the previous messages on the subject I still do not have
clear picture of how to make SUB RX drive both earphones without resorting
to use of command tester. Is that the work in progress?
4) AF knob has recently fallen apart. I have discussed that with several
other users here in Russia and found that it is pretty common case. It would
be good to have substitute knobs made of some better plastic or aluminum.
Is there a source somewhere in the US?

Still I like this radio so much that I have recently ordered another one. As
far as I know it is already on the way here.
K3 and EXPERT 1K-FA solid state automatic amplifier with the set of
Spiderbeam antennas and light telescopic mast is ideal DXpedition setup for
me.

Correct. If the Sub is tuned to a band higher in frequency than the
Main, the low pass filters in the shared antenna path attenuate the

If you are sharing an antenna, you must tune the Sub to the same band as

currently have DX4WIN installed and working fine for rig control (through

enough time to learn how to operate it. Configuration settings are what I
need right now.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: 'Line In' problems

2009-04-13 Thread jreber
Thanks for the input, everyone. This is a great group.
The problem ended up being a solder whisker on CN2, pins 7 and 8, on the
Audio I/O board. Pins 7 and 8 of CN2 are the bypass caps for the line in
center and shield. This effectively made the line in jack a dead short.
A quick touch of solder wick followed by a reflow of pins 7 and 8 on CN2
fixed the problem. I'm sure glad Elecraft put the schematics on their
website; That made it very easy to get to the bottom of the problem.

Line in is working great now, along with everything else. I've ran the rig
on RTTY, PSK31, SSB, and CW, and everything is working great.

Thanks again for the input.

Jason AC7JW

Most Line Out signal levels from PC soundcards seem to have a little too
much drive for the K3's Line In You might want to consider a 5-10 dB
attenuator to allow enough granularity in the level control out from the
PC. I had this problem and built up a little 8 dB Pi attenuator for a
600 ohm line. Formulas for this can be found in the ARRL Handbook or at
 http://www.daycounter.com/Calculators/PI-T-Pad-Attenuator-Calculator.phtml.

Actually, I think it is the opposite. A lower threshold engages the AGC
sooner, which tends to make signals and background noise the same
volume, thus reducing S/N ratio.

Instead, run the threshold higher so that you can preserve some of the
dynamic range between signals and band noise.

[Elecraft] K2/100 Extreme high Power Out - What did I do?

2009-04-13 Thread Bob Mallory
Experimenting the other day, I had used my RS232 cable to connect a Icom
Radio to my PC. When I reconnected my K2, I forgot to disconnect the
Icom. I let smoke out of the K2!.

Everything seemed to work, PC control, receive, etc. Except on
Transmit, (with Tune button) with a dummy load I have either '0' out on
low power or 148 watts on high power, nothing in between. No modulation
out.

Before I dig in, any suggestions? I tried to search for smoked
components, but nothing obvious.
Why would the RS232 port have an impact on the Transmit circuitry.
Thanks for any suggestions as a starting point.

I am really gun shy now about trying 3.06 again and may not do any updating

Bill,

Apparently you have 160 meters mapped out *and* you either dialed down
to 500 kHz or did a direct frequency entry to .500 kHz while you were on
80 meters.

A direct frequency entry to somewhere in the 80 meter band will set it
straight.

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 Extreme high Power Out - What did I do?

2009-04-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bob,

The first thing I want to mention is that the K2 does *NOT* have an
RS-232 port connector! You will do yourself a big favor by thinking of
that 9 pin connector by the name that is on the K2 - AUX I/O.
The connector does contain 3 RS-232 defined signals, but the rest are
internal K2 signal lines that can be damaged by connecting a standard
computer serial cable. Use only the special cable (instructions in the
KIO2 and KPA100 manuals) between the K2 and the PC.

In order for us to better understand what may have been damaged, please
tell us what type cable(s) you had connected at which points when it
failed - please include the Icom, the K2 and the PC, how the cables were
connected and what type cables were connected at all points.

It may be that the interconnections had nothing to do with the K2
failure, and you had a static discharge that damaged the wattmeter in
the KPA100 (or KAT100). Please tell us whether this is a K2/100 and
with or without the KAT100.

73,
Don W3FPR.

2009-04-13 Thread The Smiths

Lyle,

I'm going to assume that one of your 2 commands makes it so that the Sub goes
to BOTH ears, but the Main also continues to come out of the Main side as well?

I hope that you're also working on a way to mix Sub and main into BOTH ears.
Perhaps only 50% of sub in the main ear, and 50% of main in the sub ear. This
would really help with Diversity mode reception. It would of course relieve
the rocking boat feeling you get when signals phase between left and right
ears.

Try going to that .5 band and manuall tuning up freq. until you get to your
spot on 80m. Use the coarse tuning. This almost has to work. Once you get
there, shift through the bands and see if 80 isn't still there.

Hi: Thanks for all the suggestions, but nothing seems to work. A direct
entry of 3.5 doesn't have any effect. The BND MAP in config shows 1.8
IN, but all I can do is change IN to OUT and vice versa for 1.8.
Strangely, although config shows 1.8 IN, toggling the band switch
doesn't show 1.8. All I keep getting are the numbers mentioned in my
previous email. Spooky! Any more ideas or suggestions?

[Elecraft] [K2] KPA100 KAT100 in EC2 For Sale

2009-04-13 Thread W4HDM

I have a new KAT100 tuner (built March 4th, 2009) with a KPA100 w/KIO2 in a EC2
enclosure with the 3'' tilt stand.

The amp just received the KPA100UPKT, KPA100MODKT, KPA100SHIELDKT, and the
latest firmware (1.10).
Although the EC2 was purchased new (Feb 2009), it has a few very slight scuffs
on the sides. The amp portion came with the K2 I purchased used in Jan. 2009.
The radio was advertised as never used. S/N 473 ... it looks like the amp may
have been installed later.

I am selling this because I do not need high power, this rig will be used for
portable operation. I used the amp and tuner this weekend for the SKCC Sprint
and it appeared to operate as it should ... no problems.

I will include the short side of the control cable so that you can add it to
your existing cable or I would be willing to trade the complete cable for your
regular cable. The sale will also include the manual (Ap and Tuner), a short
BNC jumper and the power cord. All you will need to hook this to your K2
(assuming you have the KIO2 on your K2) will be a short coax jumper with pl259s
terminated on each end, and the control cable assembled (unless you trade yours
for mine)

Pictures available on request. Live demo via my Live Shack Feed can be
arranged. http://w4hdm.camstreams.com

[Elecraft] Filter Selection Approach

2009-04-13 Thread Ed G
Hello,
I am getting ready to order a K3 with subreceiver soon, and have been
thinking about which filters to order. From most of what I read, folks seem
to order duplicates for the subreceiver of what they have ordered for the
main receiver, or perhaps just go with just a couple narrower ones for the
subreceiver. Since I work mostly CW, and am not too interested in diversity
reception (don't have the antennas either), I was thinking of the following:

Main Rx: 2.8 - 1.8 - 1 - 400 - 200
Sub Rx: 13 - 6 - 2.8 - 2.1 - 1 or 400

I know that's a lot of filters, but other than going broke, are there any
drawbacks to this? Has anyone else tried to essentially give themselves all
the filter options by populating both receivers with different filters?

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 Extreme high Power Out - What did I do?

2009-04-13 Thread Bob Mallory
Thanks Don,
Your right on target, I was thinking that it was a standard RS232
connection, that probably what got me in trouble.
I have the correctly built I/O cable for use with the K2/100 and a
KAT100 to the serial port on my PC. Has been working with HRD for quite
some time.
I recently acquired a ICOM R75 Receiver and without thinking much about
it, unplugged the K2/100 and KAT100 connectors and placed the KAT100
connector on to the R75. This was my 'thoughtless' attempt to use the
ICOM R75 with HRD. It wouldn't communicate. With no real concern to
attempt to troubleshoot, I decided to re-connect the K2/100 to the I/O
cable but inadvertently left the R75 connected to what should have been
the KAT 100 connector. Powered on the K2 and had instant smoke. Smoke
wasn't visible but you can't mistake that distinct smell. (took about 10
sec to notice)

I powered off, disconnected the R75 and tested the K2 connection to
HRD. Everything seemed to work.

I felt it necessary to pop open the K2 and take a look around the AUX
I/O port circuitry and everything 'appeared' ok. Not until I later
attempted to Transmit, did I notice a problem. Yes, I could have
injected a problem when I removed the cover of the K2.

I built the K2/100 and the KAT100 about one year ago and the build went
flawlessly. Now I think my momentary lapse of common sense has caused
some problems.

The Tuner will tune the separate bands to give an appropriate SWR but my
Watt meter (LP-100A) is showing 147 watts when using the 'Tune' button.
It normally only shows approx 17 watts.

I plugged in the Elecraft Dummy load (20 watt) and the Elecraft W1 Power
meter and a QRP 'Tune' shows NO Power out. Turn the Power Dial up to
activate the KPA100 and the Wattage immediately jumps to 140+ on the W1
watt meter. Obviously the 20Watt Dummy Load is not happy with that :)

Don Wilhelm wrote:
 Bob,

The first thing I want to mention is that the K2 does *NOT* have an
RS-232 port connector! You will do yourself a big favor by thinking
of that 9 pin connector by the name that is on the K2 - AUX I/O.
The connector does contain 3 RS-232 defined signals, but the rest are
internal K2 signal lines that can be damaged by connecting a standard
computer serial cable. Use only the special cable (instructions in
the KIO2 and KPA100 manuals) between the K2 and the PC.

In order for us to better understand what may have been damaged,
please tell us what type cable(s) you had connected at which points
when it failed - please include the Icom, the K2 and the PC, how the
cables were connected and what type cables were connected at all points.

It may be that the interconnections had nothing to do with the K2
failure, and you had a static discharge that damaged the wattmeter in
the KPA100 (or KAT100). Please tell us whether this is a K2/100 and
 with or without the KAT100.

Experimenting the other day, I had used my RS232 cable to connect a
Icom Radio to my PC. When I reconnected my K2, I forgot to
disconnect the Icom. I let smoke out of the K2!.

Everything seemed to work, PC control, receive, etc. Except on
Transmit, (with Tune button) with a dummy load I have either '0' out
on low power or 148 watts on high power, nothing in between. No
 modulation out.

Before I dig in, any suggestions? I tried to search for smoked
 components, but nothing obvious.
Why would the RS232 port have an impact on the Transmit circuitry.
Thanks for any suggestions as a starting point.

Re: [Elecraft] Filter Selection Approach

2009-04-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ed,

The DSP filtering is quite effective all by itself - I have only the 2.7
kHz filter installed and fine it quite effective *except* for heavy
QRM/pileup situations - like contesting or serious DXing, and when the
'going gets tough', I go do something other than hamming.

Caution - I am going to present my own opinions here - YMMV.

If I were ordering a bunch of filters, I would have the 13 kHz in the
main for FM transmit (and receive), and the 6 kHz also in the main for
AM transmit. I do not see much sense in having both the 13 and the 6
kHz in the sub since either can be used for AM receive. Besides, why
would you want FM and AM receive only capability (by putting them in the
sub) if you have no transmit capability in those modes.

If you do SSB contesting or serious DXing, the 2.1 or even the 1.8
filters may be beneficial, and I would select one width of those two and
put one of those in the sub and one in the main to allow diversity
reception (if and when you get a separate receive antenna) for SSB
operation.

Similarly, I would pair up the narrow CW filters for CW use, and I would
choose the 400 and the 200 Hz filters. At 1 kHz CW width, I would use
the 2.1 (or 1.8) filter and narrow it down with the DSP. I just cannot
foresee conditions where I would want to listen to a wide CW bandpass
under conditions when the DSP could not handle the dynamic range. My
normal CW tuning is done with a 500 to 700 Hz bandwidth, so I would
likely choose a 500 Hz filter for normal CW work and if I were
interested in CW contesting, I would likely choose the 200 Hz width.

So, my 'ideal' filter setup would be.
Main (with no AM or ESSB transmit capability) - 13kHz - 2.8 kHz, 2.1 (or
1.8) kHz, 500 Hz and 200 Hz.
OR - Main (with no FM transmit or receive capability) - 6 kHz - 2.8kHz,
2.1 (or 1.8) kHz, 500 Hz and 200 Hz.
Sub - 2.8kHz, 2.1 (or 1.8) kHz, 500 Hz and 200 Hz.

If I wanted both FM and AM/ESSB transmit/receive capability, I would
bump out the 500 Hz filters and install both the 13kHz and the 6 kHz in
the main, and the choice of 2.1 or 1.8 kHz would tend toward the 1.8
because I would use that roofing filter along with the DSP for normal CW
operation and switch in the 200 Hz filter when the 'going gets tough'.

So my choice for all possible modes would be:
Main -- 13 kHz, 6 kHz, 2.8 kHz, 1.8 kHz and 200 Hz.
Sub --- 2.8 kHz, 1.8 kHz, 200 Hz.

That combination would allow future diversity reception for all modes
except FM and AM/ESSB where I do not believe diversity would offer me
much advantage (I would not regularly use those modes), but preserve the
possibility for diversity reception in SSB, DATA and CW modes.

As you can see, the choice will depend on your operating aspirations.
Consider the reasons for *my* choices, and then match *your* filter
selections to your anticipated operation requirements.

I might emphasize that at present, my K3 does not have the subRX and has
only the stock 2.7 kHz filter installed. I can always add filters later
when (and if) I find a need for them.

73,
Don W3FPR

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 Extreme high Power Out - What did I do?

2009-04-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bob,

Thanks for answering the configuration/cable questions - that helps a lot.

Since the KAT100 was not connected at the time of the 'incident', it is
probably just fine. That is a good assumption for the time being, but
should be checked out later.

The reason the ICOM R75 would not connect with the cable plugging you
had is that the cable to the KAT100 does not have the 3 RS-232 signals
(RXD, TXD and Signal GND) installed on that part of the cable.

It is probable that the ICOM R75 has a 'loopback' connection between the
normal RTS and CTS signals (pins 7 and 8), so when you left the cable
(which is normally connected to the KAT100) attached to the ICOM R75,
and powered the K2/100 the internal 12CTRL line would have applied 12
volts to the VRFDET signal.
I highly suspect that you zapped U6 in the KPA100 by applying 12 volts
to its output pin. You can verify that by looking at the KPA100
schematic and mentally connecting J8 pins 7 and 8.

However - it is unusual for the condition that when VRFDET is not
functioning, to have max power out of the KPA100 (120 watts or more)
*and also* to have no power output when the power is set to less than 10
watts - normally you would have 120 watts or more if the power control
was above 10 watts and 12 to 15 watts if the power control is less than
10 watts.

As a result, I will ask you to physically remove the KPA100 from the
base K2 and test the power control on the base K2 alone. If the power
control is normal (can control between very low power and 12 to 15
watts), then the base K2 is probably unharmed and the problem is most
likely U6 of the KPA100. OTOH, if the base K2 power control is not
normal, the 'incident' created two failures and we need to tackle them
one at a time (base K2 first).

My guesses can be wrong, but try the tests that I inferred as first
order of business and let me know the results. If the troubleshooting
get too intense, we will take it off the reflector and you can report
the final results to the reflector after the problem has been solved.

73,
Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] Odd problem on 160m

2009-04-13 Thread WN3R, Dick
I put up a new 160m dipole and SSB signals sound like something is pumping
with AGC in the slow mode. SSB Stations sound much better with fast AGC. I
have a Dunstar 600 but since I am using the aux ant jack it's not in the

Perhaps I should reconfigure to add the Dunstar. BTW, when listening on the
K9AY loop, signals sounds much better (no pumping).

Any ideas?
