Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Hi cur on 6 meter
Hi Max, It seems that the KPA3 is not as efficient on 6m as on the other bands. My K3 draws 21.5A at 6m/100W. A friend of mine who owns a K3 complained about this phenomenon as well (25% more current on 6 than on other bands). Maybe the design team can explain this behavior ... -- Enno, PF5X Max iw0gxy wrote: Today I've noted the HI CUR warning on my K3. The vswr is very low (around 1.2) and the supply is 50A, so is not a supply overload question neither vswr problem (i checked also on dummy). It happens when on 6m (and only on this band) the power is more than 84W. I updated the firmware when it has been released but actually i didn't noted if it happened with previous firmware releases. [Elecraft] [K3] Case screws rusting
Hi all, I've just got back from YS1G, where the K3 was just perfect! Thanks again, Elecraft, for making the world's best expedition radio. Ambient temperatures were 35C daytime, 25C night and we were right by the ocean. On returning to England I can see that the salty, humid air has done some damage to the K3, and caused the black case screws to rust. I am planning to change these for stainless steel screws and do a full health check inside and out on the whole radio. Anyone else got this problem or any suggestions? 73 Michael G7VJR -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Case-screws-rusting-tp2968823p2968823.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KUSB+Logger32
Mike, I have been using Logger32 for about 10 years and have had virtually no issues. I currently have 3 USB to serial adapters running on my PC, one for the Yaesu and two connected to the K-3, one for reading the data from the radio into Logger32, the other for the Logger32 CW keyer. At this moment CPU usage is running 2-7% with both Logger32 running and LP-Bridge running. PC is running XP and is a dual core Intel machine. Hope this helps. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Case screws rusting
On the Stainless Screws, a Black Magic Marker does wonders. Use a piece of Styrofoam to push the screws into, and give the heads a few coats. It is a renewable process that can be repeated every time they are removed. David KD4NUE Thanks to Bob MD0CCE for his efforts on Topband! Another one that may be worth looking into (other than the suggestions presented already) is the Alinco DM-330MV Switching supply. It is metered, adjustable voltage, remotely accessible, small, quiet, well laid out, and it has a feature similar to Yaesu's Clock Shift, whereby you can shift any noise it might make to another frequency; on the fly. Re: [Elecraft] Switching PS with the K3 - thoughts?
The Radio Shack 25 amp supply, which someone else mentioned and recommended is available on the website, but the local store nearby told me they will order it for you (at that sale price--$59), and no shipping cost. Most Radio Shack stores have stopped stocking those power supplies locally. I already had one, and the Samlex 1223 also, and both work pretty well. By the way, I did pull the cover off both, and they are not the same--they just looked very similar. Actually, the Radio Shack supply looks like it might be a tad more substantial. Anyway, for under $60, it's possibly worth a look. Can anyone confirm that my understanding of DIGOUT1 is correct. I think that when turned on for each band by going to the band setting antenna to 1 or 2 and then turning it on or off, the following will be true. When Off for any band pin 11 will not go to ground with pin 5 and nothing will happen, When turned on for a band, when going to that band pin 11 will go to ground with pin 5 thereby providing a switch which can be used to cycle a transistor switch on and off depending on band setting. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Split RS232?
HowardZ wrote: This free software will solve your problem http://www.eterlogic.com/Products.VSPE.html Let's say your K3 has one 9pin RS232C port, and you want to connect it to your amplifier so the amplifier will always know the band/frequency the radio is set to. But wait - you also have the Palstar AT AUTO auto-tuner and you want to connect its RS232 port to the K3 so that the tuner will always retune every time you change the K3 frequency. But, that's not enough. You want to run Ham Radio Deluxe on the computer - and it needs to access the K3's RS232 port. What's a HAM to do? This free VSPE software can solve it for you. Let's say your computer has 3 COM ports: COM1 - connected to the Radio. COM2 - connected to the Apmplifier COM3 - connected to the Antenna Tuner Software 1: need to get access to COM1 (Radio) - Ham Radio Deluxe Software 2: need to get access to COM1 (Radio) - perhaps some other software. Amplifier and Antenna tuner devices must also be connected to the Radio. --- Right? 1) Create VSPE Splitter (Source port=COM1, Virtual port = COM9) 2) Create VSPE Serial Redirector (COM9 = COM2) : (Radio = Amplifier) 3) Create VSPE Serial Redirector (COM9 = COM3) : (Radio = Antenna Tuner) 4) Change Software 1 settings to use COM9 instead of COM1 5) Change Software 2 settings to use COM9 instead of COM1 Now the problem is solved - everything can share the COM1 going to the K3 radio. The only problem that may exist is that if several programs try to send data to the radio at the same moment, the bytes may get intermixed and if this occurs it will be an unintelligible mess to the radio. I have not tried this, so I do not know if it will or will not occur. Re: [Elecraft] K3 dse error after installing DVR
I had the same problem after installing the digital voice recorder. I managed to get the rig going again, after firmware reload, which was a major headache in itself, refusing to load or recognise presence of DSP firmware. The problem has since recurred, then mysteriously went away. I wonder if there is some instabilty in the formware for DSE or DVR that needs to be fixed? When the fault occurs, all audio is lost and moving rotary controls results in clicks. Very interested to hear from anyone esle who has had this problem, as it has been most frustrating, I was at the point of packing the rig and shipping back from Australia to US for repair. External speaker kit in the EC3 enclosure? 73, John W2XS -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/-K3--Memorial-Day-Weekend-K3-Activities-tp2972408p2972408.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [K3] Elecraft Case Screws
Timely thread, I was just thinking last night that I should replace mine, as they are all rusted. Ambient temp here varies from about 5ºC to 35ºC with potential high humidity, and we are only a couple of hundred metres from a salt water lake. If anyone comes up with a permanent fix, I'd be interested to hear of it (I'd prefer not to have to colour them in every-time I opened up the radio!). Re: [Elecraft] Switching PS with the K3 - thoughts?
I've beent using the Jetstream JTPS28 switching supply with my K3 since Feb '08 and it works like a charm. Weighs in at 4 pounds and never shows any signs of heating up. 73, Don K2PMC -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Re%3A-Switching-PS-with-the-K3---thoughts--tp2967686p2972625.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Power Required for PSK 31 and Olivia
Frank, 5 Watts should be plenty of PSK contacts. Do you have a second receiver you can monitor your PSK31 on? It may be that you're not getting a signal out at all, or it may be either overdriven and distorted, or possibly suffering from RF feedback, or in some other way uncopyable. Leigh/WA5ZNU My K3 works well for CW at 5 watts but it seems I cannot get through to stations using PSK 31. Is there a minimum power level suggested for PSK31? Can you run QRP for Olivia? Thanks everybody! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Be sure you are using DATA A and not DATA PSK D mode if you are using a soundcard for PSK31 operation. 73, Lyle KK7P __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
