Re: [Elecraft] Need KAT2 Help

2009-09-10 Thread Don Wilhelm
Tom,

You must obtain a low balance reading before you can do any *valid*
power or SWR calibration.
If you cannot null with the capacitor, there is something wrong -
normally that something is associated with T1 and the other wattmeter
components, but you say you have checked those.

OK, the next logical step is to find out for certain whether you have a
problem with the wattmeter or the L-C board. Separate the Control board
from the L-C board and place a jumper from J4 pin 2 to J5 pin 15 (yes,
it is a long jumper - the second pin in from the far ends). Now, with
only the Control Board (you must use the ANT1 connector) - connect a
dummy load and again try to balance the wattmeter - if you find that
the capacitor now achieves a null, look for the problem (likely a relay)
on the L-C Board -but if you still cannot null the wattmeter, take
another look at T1 and its associated components.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility settings transfer

2009-09-10 Thread Dick Dievendorff
.ini files have their own problems, that's why they have long been
deprecated for new application development. Raymond Chen explains why in
http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2007/11/26/6523907.aspx.

There are issues with the Registry as well, but it's the solution a whole
lot of software authors choose for rapid hierarchal access to configuration
data.

If I were writing the K3 Utility with extensive library support (pick your
run-time library, VBRUN, .Net, Java, RealBasic, Qt, whatever), I might have
used an XML configuration file, as I did with K3 Voice. One of the
constraints I accepted for the K3 Utility was a relatively small download
size (currently it's just over a megabyte, and about 2/3 of that is help
text and help file images), and to avoid prerequisite downloads and
installation issues commonly referred to as the "DLL Hell" problem.

Writing XML configuration files when things change is quite slow when
compared with registry writes as controls change.

YMMV for the software you write, Thom.

[Elecraft] Re: [K2] XV50 vs FT817?

2009-09-10 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Tim,

QRP did work sometimes with this magic band.  In the past cycle, I used 5 watts
and made contact between Oman and Hong Kong.  Also 10 watts between Brazil and
Hong Kong.  Of course, QRP will need more patience and skill.

I never tried K2+ XV50 on field days because it is too convenience to be
carried.  On the other hand, I used K2 only for HF during field day.

cheers,

Johnny VR2XMC

I would strongly disagree on several points!
I have run 6 meter QRP for years and they do not call it the magic band for
nothing.
I have 50+ countries on 6 meter QRP at last count.
I run QRP from QTH as well as mountain tops and when conditions are right you
do not need more than a few watts for SSB or CW and yes most VHF contest have
CW activity although not as much as I would like.
As for the virtues of KXV verses the 817 I use both but the 817 is my mtn top
rig even with the higher current drain I like one rig for all bands, I use a
220 5 watt xverter fron a QST article with the 817 also. The KXV's are more
sensitive and have a little more output and I use them at QTH. I like the ease
of switching bands and the offsets for keeping frequency easy to see.
Personaly I just do not like taking my K2 and transverters mountain topping.

Peter,

There are no VHF CW contests, per se. There is usually some 50 MHz CW activity
in the June ARRL VHF QSO party and the July CQ WW VHF contest, but this is
probably about 10% or less of the activity level on SSB. DX chasing, on the
other hand, is typically more fruitful on CW. But chasing 6 meter DX with QRP
is
an exercise in frustration. DX signal levels are simply too weak for QRP.

For 6m SSB, you will want at least 100W output into a decent directional
antenna
to be competitive in the Low Power category of ARRL VHF (up to 200W). There are
no power categories in the CQ WW, so you're competing directly against the KWs
in this one.

Bottom line -- Outside of extremely strong 50 MHz sporadic-E openings, "VHF"
and
"QRP" don't really go together that well, though some guys do seem to enjoy the
challenge. For me, life is too short for 6m QRP. :-)  I enjoy making QSOs too
much, I guess.

Good luck,
Bill W5WVO

[Elecraft] K3: Older Firmware File Versions Still Maintained Anywhere?

Hi Everyone,

Wondering if older versions of K3 firmware including beta's are
available for downloading anywhere on the internet.

I'm specifically looking for versions back to 3.10.

I apparently deleted my own versions of these files somewhere along the way.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AF/RF Mod

2009-09-10 Thread N2TK
Paul,
I like what you did. I agree. I don't use the RF gain controls much if at
all. I use the AF gain controls for the main and sub receiver the most. If I
remember correctly the prototype K3 had the controls the way you changed
them.
Will have to give some thought to making the mod.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 AF/RF Mod

Okay, I couldn't leave well enough alone...

Yesterday morning, I was working a T30 station split on 40m with the K3's
Sub Rx and became a bit unnerved with the manipulation of the K3's "Sub AF"
control when balancing between Main and Sub receivers. Multiple quick
reaches for the "balance" function on the upper Sub AF control's outer ring
was causing me to accidentally come in contact with the other controls.
Looking at the K3 schematic, all four controls (Main AF, Sub AF, Main RF,
and Sub RF) are all 10K in value. Even when the K3's AF control furnction
menu is selected for "Normal," rather than AF "Balance," a similar issue can

arrise when trying to quickly balance the Main/Sub AF controls on one shaft.

I removed the front panel to inspect the Front Panel PCB and thought a swap
of the Sub AF and Main RF controls could be easily accomplished. Here's a
"before" photo of the PCB area:

http://216.229.20.37/images/K3-AF-1.jpg

And the "after" wiring...

http://216.229.20.37/images/K3-AF-2.jpg

A hot glue gun can be used near the 5-pin header to keep the two ribbon
cables from interfering with future front panel extractions and insertions.
Now, the upper controls handles Main AF (inner) + Main RF/SQL (outer). The
lower controls handle Sub AF/Balance (inner) and Sub RF (outer).

When I engage split operations and use the Sub Rx, manipulating the balance
between Main AF and Sub RF is easier with a bit less propensity to
accidentally come in contact with the adjacent controls since: (1) the
Main/Sub AF balance function is now on the inner concentric control and
extends out further from the front panel than the outer concentric ring; and

(2) the balance function is now moved to the bottom where the hand can
approach the control from the bottom rather than directly in-line with the
knob.

If needed later for a sale, reversal of the mod is very easy. Certainly,
this mod is not for everyone. However, I would think that in later PCB
revisions, Elecraft could provide the option of selecting the existing
format or the modified format at the time of purchase -- or to the builder
who simply makes a few header pin changes during construction.

Of course, the front panel legends also need changing and that's probably
the biggest drawback to the mod. In my case, I will use new legends printed

from a Brother 'P-Touch' printer -- printed with white lettering against
black background tape. Font size and type is adjustable to match the
existing legends on the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] Decoder for use with K3 and PW-1

2009-09-10 Thread Dick Dievendorff
George: I'll hazard a guess:

The cable that carries the band voltage level is also used for the ALC
voltage output from the PW-1 to the exciter.

If you started with an ICOM transceiver and had an antenna switch such as an
EX-627 plugged into the transceiver's accessory connector, you could just
interpose the IC-PW1, moving the antenna switch to the amplifier's accessory
connector, and add a new accessory cable from the exciter to the amplifier.

It's more convenient for users to do this than to require them to
manufacture a new "split" cable that supplies ALC from the PW-1 and exciter
band voltage to the EX-627.

Dear friends,

I am sure many of you will appreciate the news that INRAD will add to their
Xtal Filter catalogue components kits of 10 TMP sockets and 10 TMP plugs to
help the homebrewer to design, assemble and modify their equipment on an easier
and more professional way.

Kits should be in the INRAD price list in a couple of days.

This is certainly an important care of INRAD versus their customers.

[Elecraft] Need KAT2 Help

2009-09-10 Thread KG3VTomZ
Just finished assembling a KAT2 for my K2. When I started testing I found a
problem. I only get "HI" on the display in the CALn step, where you are
supposed to adjust for a reading of 000. Reducing power as low as I can go,
I can get a "000" display, but as soon as I increase the power, I get "HI".
I tried CALP and I did get readings that made some sense (a high value for
FWD and low value for REF power) but the FWD was something like 22 watts,
which seems too high.

I disassembled and reveiwed the SWR bridge section, counted turns on T1,
removed the link on T1 and pulled up T1 to inspect the leads and soldering.
Also verified all the component values and soldering in that area.

So my streak is over. Thought you just finished assembl, turned on power,
and all this Elecraft stuff just worked! Guess it had to happen.

Any ideas/

Re: [Elecraft] Decoder for use with K3 and PW-1

2009-09-10 Thread Tom Hammond
Hi George:

UNfortunately, if you look at the SCHEMATIC of the PW-1, you will see that the
stepped band/data voltage (paraphrasing one of my daughters) "goes in
one ear and right out the other), and is NEVER TOUCHED (internally)
by the PW-1 as is passes from one ACC connector to the other...

I can (I believe) still provide a copy of the relative portions of
the PW-1 schematic if you wish to review it. Can't include it here
due to reflector restrictions on attachments, etc.

It appears that the ONLY way to get the PW-1 to actually ACT upon the
K3's band data is to be able to convert it from (K3) BCD to PW-1 CI-V format.

If you look at the schematic or the jack board (Jack 1 Unit -
page 68) in the service manual, pin 4 of the ACC-1 and ACC-2
are connected only to the Exciter 1/Exciter 1&2 switch. In
the single exciter position the two jacks are connected together,
in the dual exciter position the two jacks are disconnected.

Neither the "stepped voltage" nor the 8V reference on pin 1 appear
to be used anywhere else in the PW-1. It would be difficult for
the stepped voltage to switch bands in the PW-1 if it is not
connected!

The only purpose of the "stepped voltage" connection appears to
be as a "feed through" when connecting another Icom accessory to
ACC-2.

At times, depending on the signal, you may need to adjust the threshold setting
in text

[Elecraft] CW BW [was K3 CW Auto Spot in 3.30 with NR turned on]

2009-09-10 Thread Fred Jensen
K2MK wrote:

> My initial findings were with a 50Hz filter bandwidth.

I'm not sure, but I think the BW of a 30 wpm CW signal such as you will
hear in contests exceeds 50 Hz. The code elements pretty much run
together at that BW for me, and I really can't discern much.

And you're right, my autospot doesn't work unless the CWT bar is
moderately stable, regardless of NR settings.

I was struck by the fact that I can even set my radio for 50 Hz BW! I
wonder what the BW was on my Drake 2B with the Q-mult set just below
oscillation? Things sure have changed.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AF/RF Mod

2009-09-10 Thread Paul Christensen
BTW, the mod is likely possible with a future F/W change to allow changes
just as the current menu allows for 'Normal" and 'Balance' audio functions.
If that ever happens, the wiring mod is very easily reversible in less than
a minute with no evidence left behind.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility update for Mac?

2009-09-10 Thread David Fleming
Hi Joe,

My K3 developed a problem and I had to ship it to Aptos for repair. Any further
Mac development will have to wait until I get the radio back. I've already
completed most of the RF Gain Cal code. Hopefully I'll have the new version of
the Mac utility out within the next couple of weeks.

[Elecraft] K3 AF/RF Mod

2009-09-10 Thread Paul Christensen

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] XV50 vs FT817?

2009-09-10 Thread Tim O'Rourke

Good luck,
Bill W5WVO

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility settings transfer

2009-09-10 Thread Dick Dievendorff
You can use the registry editor (regedit) to export the registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elecraft/K3 Utility to a .reg file, copy
the file to the other machine and import it there. I would examine
the .reg file with anotepad before importing it for reasonableness.
The reg file should contain only keys and values for the key named
above. Normal Regedit dire warnings apply, it is a powerful tool.

Hi Allan,

Back on Sept 6 & 7, there were a couple of reports of it still
happening on 3.30. Personally, I haven't heard it, but that doesn't
mean anything. I've been avoiding headphone use for the time being.

A while back (FW 2.67), they added the CONFIG:AF LIM setting intended
for use when AGC was turned off. I wonder if turning this on would
help limit the blast if/when it occurs?

2009-09-10 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
If Elecraft thought they could guarantee that, there would be a new
version out there right now. Just remember it's *beta* software. As
always YMMV.

This is the alternative to releasing firmware changes only in new
model radios that cost kilobucks. Everyone gets to choose whether
they want to play in Elecraft's "kitchen" or not. Not everybody
enjoys the heat or getting flour on their pants.

Doesn't bother me to come out of the kitchen with my hair singed and
looking like I got the flour jar dumped on me. But I love this kind
of stuff. That's *my* choice. May you enjoy yours.

As to the issue itself, software problems like that are always
[expletive deleted]. I've chased after hundreds of nasty apparently
intermittent software problems over my IT career, and it never gets
any better. My inner emotional patience with the Aptos folks on this
is based on my complete identification with the frustration of finding
such.

First, I think that it is the best of the automatice QRP tuners out there. I
bought mine ready-built, but I'm thinking of getting another as a kit so I can
at least say that I've built it.

Now the questions-

1) I plan to use mine in the attic to tune a horizontal loop. Do I need the
1:1 / 4:1 balun?

2) Has anyone thought about combining the T1 with the Buddipole...would it even
be necessary...and would you again need the balun? I could envision the T1
right at the center tee just like they use the triple-ratio balun now.

3) I would like to make a suggestion for the firmware. Maybe after a tuning
session, the system can be set to automatically send out the information.
(maybe turned on/off somehow if not in use otherwise) I will be using my T1 up
in the attic and can't get up there all the time. A remote display/assessment
of the situation would be great...especially via a little box with a PIC and
LCD display. I'm not sure how many others use the T1 in a more permanant setup
but this might be something to think of.

It took me quite some time to find out that your 1 in
Tap 1(manual page 60 TX EESB) means the

knop with the primary function: A/B , the sec. function B SET

and a tertiary function as a numberkey!

Just A/B in parenthesis had been a great help.

All the best Erik / OZ8EM K3 owner since yesterday.
