What is all this Droid stuff?

I am afraid the latest shipping date estimate of 16th December is just too
late for all of us in the UK. The tax applies when it arrives, not when it
was sent. So that is only 2.5% but the Dollar is going up again as well. I
am wondering about cancelling. I have been thinking about it for a while. As
far as I can tell there are no advantages over the XV144 at this time. The
milliwatt output for driving microwave transverters is not in place yet.

Don Ehrlich wrote:

...Not so, and obviously not a problem of a single batch of

I think there has been some misunderstanding here. My reading of
Eric's explanation is that the KNOB MANUFACTURER screwed up in a
single batch (or perhaps a few consecutive batches) of knobs.
Typically, with parts made in batches, all the batches go into the
same bin after initial inspection to make sure they meet specs,
and are subsequently shipped out from the mixed bin, irrespective
of the original manufacturing batch they came from. This would
mean that, out of a given lot shipped to the customer (Elecraft),
a few of the knobs in each shipped lot will likely be from the bad
manufacturing batch until ALL knobs from the bad manufacturing
batch(es) have been used up (or the problem is discovered and all
existing knobs are purged). This could potentially take a LONG
time, and explains why some end users have in the past received
two different shipments from Elecraft of knobs that turned out to
be bad.

According to Eric, the problem was discovered months ago and there
are no more bad knobs in Elecraft stock, only newly-manufactured
knobs with the fiberglass fill.

[Elecraft] K3 fails low power cal

2009-12-06 Thread Ron Spencer
I've sent this to Elecraft tech but thought I'd post it here too.

My K3, using latest firmware, fails the low power cal on 160. On all bands
the power out doesn't vary with the power knob until the K3 kicks over to
the 100W amp then acts correctly. I've tried, several times, the power cal
using the K3 utility but fails each time.

Any hints (other then, of course, sending it back to Elecraft:))

Hello,

I am having a problem when I go into AM, or AM sync.  Example:  I go to an
AM Shortwave station.  If I turn the AF gain past approximately 3/4 or
farther the radio starts to Stutter, Distort, and finally the audio
disappears.  I cannot make out what is coming out from my speaker.  The
audio is completely distorted or gone.  I noticed I could rotate the Af gain
(Counter Clockwise) and it would go back to less distortion.  I did check
the external speaker jack and also unplugged it only to find the same
problem.

The AF knob feels like it was one of those old potentiometers that we are
all aware of (Get scratchy after use and loose).  From my understanding
Elecraft used extremely fine pots with a very long life (They do have a bad
wobble/looseness in them though).

Upon further investigation I found that if I rotated the RF gain control
from the fully clockwise position (all the way open) to the full counter
clockwise position (all the way closed) that when you almost get to the end
of travel the radio audio goes completely dead.  I have tried this multiples
times and it is very repeatable.

After more investigation I found that if I rotated the shift (While in AM
or Sync AM) control from its standard (Normal) value of 1.50 to 1.55 this
horrible distortion would disappear?  I am really confused as to what is
going on here.

This happens while in the Normal AM mode as well as the Sync AM mode.

I have tried to explain this in away that I hope most people will understand
my problem (I am not an EE).

Could others please let me know if it is my unit or a wider problem?

I am using 3.59 and the serial number is 283?.  This unit was fully loaded
and built by Elecraft.

Thanks,

Rick

Hi All,

Just checked some of the knobs and it would seem some of the threads in the
knobs are not parallel and get tighter as the grub screw is screwed further
in. It would seem that a tapered tap has been used on some of the holes and
due to small shaft hole has not been through enough to make a parallel
thread.

If you're using the 2.8 or 2.1 filters for AM mode reception, it would
probably sound distorted. The 2.8 works fine for listening to AM in

No, I do not have the AGC Off, nor have I changed any of the settings

Anyway, I am really stumped as what the problem is.

If you happen to have a K3 equipped as mine, could try to listen to an AM
station with the Volume turned up, to see if you are receiving the
distortion?

I should have been more specific, the radio is totally loaded. It does
have the 8 Pole filters in both receivers. From my recollection I have the
following filters: 250 Data CW, 2.1 for SSB, 2.8 for SSB, and 6 for AM,
and 13 for FM. I hope this makes it a litter clearer and not more
confusing.

Do you perhaps have AGC turned off and the AF LIM set to a value of
less than 30? The distortion and eventual cutting out of audio at
high levels you are describing sounds a lot like the intended AF
limiter action. If so, the solution is to either turn on AGC, or
increase the AF LIM setting closer to 30. I find an AF LIM setting of
28 allows as much dynamic range as I want while still protecting my
tender ears from various pops and static crashes.

The AF limiter is intended to protect your ears and speakers from
unexpectedly loud signals when AGC is turned off. It will prevent the
output from exceeding the preset value at the expense of distortion.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Distorted Sound while using AM

2009-12-06 Thread drewko
My audio will distort and cut out as you describe if it's a very
strong AM signal (nearly full scale on the s-meter) and the volume is
turned up to that extreme. But that is really loud. I usually have the
AF Gain set at 1/4 rotation or less, so don't really consider it a
problem here. I never under any circumstance have to go up as far as
3/4 on the AF Gain (unless the AGC is off and the RF Gain is way down,
in which case there is no distortion).

FWIW, you can set Config: AF GAIN to HI or LO.

The feel of my AF RF controls are smooth. They have a very small
side-to-side play but no bad wobble/looseness as you describe.

When I rotate the RF Gain full CCW it is very quiet, just a very faint
noise level can be heard with the AF Gain full CW. I consider it
normal operation.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Firewire

2009-12-06 Thread Brendan Minish
Top posting feels all wrong ;-)

Forget Firewire for this. Firewire is admittedly very good but it's far
from standard on non-apple products and USB3 is going to give it a good
run for it's money in all areas except perhaps Pro A/V where latency is
a huge concern.

However the real issue with both firewire and USB is the need it then
creates for the Vendor (elecraft in this case) to maintain drivers for
various versions of popular operating systems for the life of the
product ( what happens to those drivers when the product becomes EOL) .
I have an SDR-14 and I can transfer up to a 190KHz slice of the HF
spectrum via USBv1.
How much bandwidth is really required ? (Main RX / Sub RX + I/Q of the
12KHz IF + Rig control ? )

A much better solution would be Ethernet and IP based protocols. it's
also a lot more flexible in that the connection to the radio can be
routed over any network providing sufficient bandwidth is available.
This also avoids the need to maintain a set of high quality drivers for
a diverse and ever changing range of operating systems.
100M Ethernet should be sufficient but by all means use a Gigbit port,
it will only add a small amount to the overall cost.
Use a little tiny embedded computer to run the IP stack and there could
even be a web server in there allowing for remote rig control, Audio I/O
etc without needing to use anything fancier than a Flash capable web
browser.
Embedded computers are getting very small and very capable, take a look
at this one for example .

Re: [Elecraft] K3 PSK31 split freq?

Tom,

Hello, using K3 #250 here with 3.63 firmware, etc. Today there
was a V5/DJ on 17m on PSK31. He was calling CQ and listening up.
When I tried to go split I got a SPL N/A.

Which data sub-mode were you using, DATA_A? Or were you using
PSK_D with paddle transmission?

I have no problem with split in FSK_D and AFSK_A ... just be
sure that both VFOs are set to the same mode (tap AB twice
then tune VFO B off and invoking split).

Any way to do split mode in PSK?

You can also use XIT or for narrow splits simply disable the
net function in the PSK31 software if you are not using PSK_D.

[Elecraft] Filter talk and contests etc

2009-12-06 Thread Merv Schweigert
With all the filter discussions and contest crowded environment etc.

This AM during the 160 contest, I was just tuning and working a
few to give out a point, as I tuned across 1814.0 there was a
10 over 9 6 land station calling cq, and at 1814.35 another 6
land at 20 over 9 calling cq, but between I hear a signal at 1814.2
so narrowing down the K3 I proceeded to work VQ9LA who
was just above the noise level.
Have done this many times since owning the K3 and its a real
tribute to its selectivity and ability to cope with signals loud enough
to squash most receiver front ends.
Im sure it does not make for friends when you come on within a
few hundred cycles and work stations out from under the big
signals, but sure makes for nice DXing on topband.

2009-12-06 Thread ab2tc

Hi,

I agree with you, Brendan, Ethernet is the way to go. Ethernet is always
transformer coupled so there are no problems with ground loops and that also
helps with noise, although the unshielded Ethernet cables don't help in this
regard. More and more microcontrollers, especially ARM based ones, now come
with fast Ethernet controllers onboard and IP stacks are easy to come by
these days. So a separate embedded computer to run the Ethernet interface is
often no longer necessary.

[Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 install question?

2009-12-06 Thread Randy Moore
I'm installing a KRX3 in K3 #2006 and have a small confusion. I'm on p.
20 of the KRX3 installation manual. I have confirmed that R91 has a
value of about 22 ohms (21.9 on my meter). The 4th step on the page
says that if that is the case, skip directly to the next page. Being
curious, I looked at the next step on p. 20 which talks about cutting
some traces if they have not already been cut. On my board, these
traces are NOT cut. But it looks like I have been directed to skip this
step. So should I cut the traces or not???

All,

I was talking with one of our vendors this past week when he mentioned a

The product that they use is called Satbilant.

Thought this might be of interest to the K3 builders as it could be very

Re: [Elecraft] AF/RF Knob situation - joined the club

2009-12-06 Thread Eric Swartz -WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Hi Julian,

I am just reading your emails now as I eat my Sunday morning breakfast.
(Hopefully my wife won't notice I'm reading email at the breakfast
table..) I was not able to read or respond to list postings most of
yesterday (Saturday). Our Elecraft company holiday party was last night
and I was busy with preparation for that and welcoming our out of town
employees as they arrived, giving them a tour of our new headquarters.
(Gary Surrency, Lyle Johnson and a number of others.)

I think you may have misunderstood my earlier posting to the list
regarding the concentric AF/RF K3 knobs. I definitely was -not- saying
that the only serial number range where concentric AF/RF knobs could
crack was from the problem plastic batch earlier this year. That was
just the trigger point that prompted us to change the plastic
formulation. Its quite clear that some concentric knobs from earlier K3s
have been broken. In many cases over-tightening of the set screws could
cause breakage of knobs on earlier K3s. Most of the failures reported to
us fell in that category, but there certainly could have been other
failures. The number of knobs failing inside the problematic plastic
s/n range though were an order of magnitude higher than those outside
that range. The jump in knob failures earlier this year is what alerted
us that there might be a manufacturing / supplier issue.

That's why, when we encountered the problem batch from the manufacturer
earlier this year, we decided to go further than just requiring them to
replace the bad ones with proper equivalents. As noted in my earlier
list posting, we also changed the plastic formulation to add glass fiber
to the mix, which makes the current knobs extremely rugged. We tested
them by over tightening the set screws to an extreme, way more than is
easily done by hand with the supplied Allen wrenches.. The set screws on
the new formulation knobs always gave out first. :-) We couldn't break
them short of hitting them with as hammer. These knobs are custom
manufactured for us by EHC, a highly respected custom knob
manufacturerr. That's why we were caught off-guard when they ended up
having problems.

I also noted in my earlier posting that we will replace for -free- under
warranty, indefinitely, all concentric K3 knobs that have problems. That
applies to -any- s/n K3, not just the ones in the problem batch. When
any customer contacts pa...@elecraft.com and reports a breakage of any
of these knobs, we will send out a complete set of four new concentric
knobs, no questions asked.

If you are nervous about your concentric knobs, please feel free to
email pa...@elecraft.com and we will send you a new set gratis.

And of course, -all- new K3s have been shipping with the improved
plastic formulation concentric knobs for a number of months. When I get
to the office tomorrow, I'll post the approximate date and s/n range to
the list and our K3 mods/alert page so there is no confusion.

Your explanation does not make sense to me. Al WA6VNN's K3 has serial
number 31. Dave G4AON's serial number I think is 80. Don K7FJ has now
posted to say the problem is apparent with his K3 serial number 195.
All those radios were made at the end of 2007. How do they come to
have knobs from a faulty batch which was manufactured during early
2009 if I understood Wayne or Eric's original explanation of the issue
 correctly?

I don't see a problem yet with my own K3 serial number 222 but that
may be because it hasn't been as heavily used as some of the others.
But I am afraid that if I needed to remove and replace a knob for any
reason that might be enough to cause a fracture. In short, I no longer
have confidence that the knobs on my K3 will not fail. I'd rather fix
the problem now than wait for a failure to happen and then send for a
replacement at a time when it may not be so easy or convenient. But
rather than lie about having a broken knob to get a replacement as
some people have suggested I'd rather be able to obtain new ones
 officially.

Not all older K3s are experiencing the knob problems. I have one of
the early K3s along with the others in the K3 Firmware Field Test group,

 time in my recollection.
This is the result of a batch of faulty knobs, just as Eric has
described, and while it will take a while for all of the faulty knobs to
be identified, it is just a batch problem - IMHO, there is no need for
Elecraft to arbitrarily supply knobs to those K3 owners that do not have
 a problem.
It may take a bit of time for failures to show up, but the fix is
 available at no cost

2009-12-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mark,

Well, on the basis of anything is possible, I guess one could add
extension wires to the PC board where the M1-M4 buttons make contact.
But I don't believe anyone would really want to do that. There are no
direct access signal lines to the pushbuttons.
However, any pushbutton is accessible through the RS-232 interface, so
if you can devise something (dedicated controller or PIC) that would
take input from those switches and massage it into the proper syntax to
put into the RS-232 port, then your pushbuttons can be used.

I am not certain why you are opposed to an external keyer, some keyer
chips with memories are quite small and might be contained directly on
your paddle base or adjacent to it. I am thinking of some of the keyer
kits offered by K1EL - check out http://k1el.tripod.com/K12.html for
info on the K12 keyer, it is quite small.

2009-12-06 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I suspect no one has responded because people are not sure and don't want to
lead you down the wrong path, Mark.

You need to make the circuit closures at your key that the M1 through M4
buttons do on the front panel. To do that with simple switches would involve
paralleling those button contacts with connections to the switches at your
key. First you'd have to dig into the front panel to make the connections
and then there's a whole spectrum of problems that might occur with wires
connected to those circuits. Noise radiation into the receiver, RF pickup
that would activate those functions spontaneously, or activate some other
Front Panel board unexpectedly when you transmit are just a few that come to
mind.

Bottom line, it appears to require some serious technical evaluation and
testing of the installation.

The better approach would be to command those functions via the rear panel
RS232 interface, but that requires a lot more than a switch at your key. It
might be done with a black box interface unit to produce the right data
outputs in response to a switch closure at your key, but again that also
requires a significant design effort.

stateside CQ'ers. I spotted one W8 who plopped right on top of

There seem to be orders of magnitude differences of hearing ability

Doug, KR2Q wrote:

Hmm... 12V at 500 mA is only 6 watts-- perhaps the 14 watts
refers to the power drawn by the wall wart while supplying rated current.
If that's the case, then I wouldn't use it for the K3 (mine with one Rx and
no antenna tuner draws one amp. at 14V.) My K2 QRP version with most
accessories, including DSP, draws about 300 mA, so the wall wart might
power your K2.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: wall wart for RX-only PS?

2009-12-06 Thread Mel Farrer
Hello Doug,

Most of the wall warts are just rectified AC.  Very little if any filtering.  I
would not advise it unless you put it across a battery, however, I would be
more comfortable getting a surplus laptop switching power supply and adjust the
voltage down to 13.5 VDC or so.  Most of the laptop supplies are about 15 VDC
and VERY good on filtering and capacity.  I
used two silicon diodes in series to drop the voltage to run my 817 on both RX
and TX.  It was the size of a double deck of cards.  I got mine for $15.  Good
luck.

[Elecraft] K3: Can transmit RX segment recorded on DVR?

2009-12-06 Thread Oscar, WB5GCX

I recorded a few seconds of another ham's signal using the DVR so he could
hear what he sounds like on the air. Is there some way I can transmit that
audio segment back out? I couldn't find a way, or find anything in the
archive.

If not, I guess I'll play it, capture to my Mac via the AF out connection on
the K3, then e-mail him the audio file.

thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] [HAM] Windows 7 and LoTW

2009-12-06 Thread Roger Marrotte
Dan,

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. It is an upgraded system from Vista.
I just uploaded my latest contacts to LOTW without any problem. This is the
first time I've tried it with Windows 7. I use DX4WIN for my log. I used a
filter in DX4WIN to select only the latest entries. I then created an ADIF
file and was then able to create a tq8 file without any problem. LOTW
accepted it. I haven't touched any LOTW stuff on my computer since the
upgrade to Windows 7.

About a year ago I had trouble creating a tq8 file. Come to find out my
certificate had expired. The error messages I was seeing didn't give any
indication that the problem was with an expired certificate. It's been long
enough that I forget just what the messages said.

I'm not sure what is wrong for you, but I can say that LOTW seems to work
fine on my Windows 7 computer.

Roger, W1EM

The error appears to be related to the way tQSL writes to its own data
files.
I have checked all the permission issues and tried running it as the Admin
and even as an XP SP3 program. No luck.

I hope to find someone who has found the secret formula. This is in Win 7
Professional. The tQSL program and the LoTW setup has never been my
favorite.

 Hey Joe,

 Thanks for the fast reply!

No, I do not have the AGC Off, nor have I changed any of the settings
within the AGC (Menus). I should have stated that in my original post.

From my recollection I have
 the
following filters: 250 Data CW, 2.1 for SSB, 2.8 for SSB, and 6 for
 AM,
and 13 for FM. I hope this makes it a litter clearer and not more
 confusing.

 Hi Rick,

Re: [Elecraft] OT: wall wart for RX-only PS?

We have a lot of power interruptions up here in the Santa Cruz

than buy a lot of commercial units, I have put together a bunch of
little home-brew back-up power supplies for most of this gear. I
simply find suitable batteries at swap-meets and use a wall wart as
a float charger, with a parallel feed to the equipment. To avoid
overcharging the battery, I carefully match the normal charging
current so that current into the battery falls into the trickle
range (5% -10% of the 10 hour discharge rate). This tends to work
quite well. When power drops, our internet router, AC powered
phones, Ethernet switch, etc. all continue to work just fine, even
through relatively long outages. Likewise, my 12-14v ham gear runs
on a couple of big Costco deep cycle batteries that are charged from
a little 10A supply. Again, charging current is kept below that
which could degrade the batteries. They won't run a big amp, but
they do fine to keep K3s and a VHF rig running.

Re: [Elecraft] Config:Wattmeter

2009-12-06 Thread Steven . Zabarnick

This bug in the wattmeter calibration still exists in the latest firmware.
Pressing XMIT during the wattmeter calibration does not transmit, and
pressing TUNE does not permit a change of the calibration paramter. On the
other hand keying the rig via a keyer does allow the calibration to be
performed.

Steve N9SZ

Using the latest 2.80 firmware, I find a problem I didn't have with
prior versions. It may be unrelated to the firmware change. I have
only been using the radio for two weeks.

TECH MD set to ON and select CONFIG: WMTR LP or HP. The display shows a
three digit number. When I hold TUNE, the display changes and shows
SWR. The VFO A knob does nothing.

I had set the wattmeter calibration earlier and all went as described in
the manual.

Firmware bug?? Operator error??

Re: [Elecraft] CAT

2009-12-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jim,

See the K2 Programmer's Reference for all the commands that can be
sent/received via the K2 through the KIO2 interface. Keying uses the KY
command, and in SSB or RTTY mode, the TX command will set the transmit
state (pulls PTT low).
If your software application can issue those commands, then it is
possible - if the commands are not available, all you can do is appeal
to the applications author to include that support - I don't know those
specid\fics of MixW.

Please resist the temptation to refer to the K2 AUX I/O as an RS-232
port - it is NOT, even though it contains TXD, RXD and Signal Ground as
RS-232 signaling levels. Other pins are used for internal K2 signals
that are used by other Elecraft devices such as the KAT100 and the
KRC2. Connecting a standard computer serial cable to this AUX I/O
connector can damage your K2. Just because it uses a DE-9 connector
does not make it a serial port (that should true for any device using a
similar connector - if it is not marked as an RS-232 connector, it
probably is not, check the manual for the device first).

[Elecraft] K3 - N1MM - RTTY

2009-12-06 Thread Jim Miller KG0KP
I'm just trying to figure this out for the first time. What mode (best) does
one use for Search and Pounce on the K3 for RTTY when using N1MM with MMTTY
viewer (No panadapter(yet)) ???

HRD/DM780 works great in DataA mode for general contacts but doesn't have the
log entry panel set up for the needed exchanges for the individual contests so
not able to upload the log file to the contest site. Can upload ADIF to LOTW
just fine.

On N1MM it is hard to tune with Data mode FSK with the RTTY filter because you
can't see much when going to the next station. I was having trouble using
Data A mode.

[Elecraft] K3 on 160 Meters

2009-12-06 Thread Lee Buller

What a wonderful radio.  Of course, I am preaching to the choir here (well most
of you anyway).  The K3 performed well during this weekend's 160 meter contest
with a very simple Inverted-L wire antenna with 20 radials.  Worked 6 countries
and 76 Mults with 775 Qs in 11 hours.  Missed VI - PR - NL and NWT.  The radio
could pull out the weak stations.  Selectivity excellent.  Just a happy
experience all the way around.  HighlightON4UN called me when I was
running.  Surprised me so much I asked for his call twice.  He was probably
laughing is a** off.  Surprised me!

Had one issuethe K3 did not go back to receive one time.  Deaf radio.  Hit
the Xmit again and it came back alive.  Did not have that issue again.  I
wonder what that was?

The other issue is that I hit a key on N1MM and the K3 jumped in frequency and
the RIT was way off.  Something I did with the control program.  It is called
Fat Fingers.

Great Radio - PERIOD!

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Distorted Sound while using AM

2009-12-06 Thread Richard Jones - KJ5QY

I think I found at least one of the problems.

If you go into the RX EQ (by clicking the MENU button, then turning the
knob until you see the RX EQ 1). Next, turn the lowest base control
(Number 1) up from the 0 EQ position until you here the distortion on AM.
It will not take much. On my rig, just taking it a few levels (Db) above
the reference the distortion on AM is there in a vengeance.

The following is the most important as I have found: If you have/get the
distortion and you raise the Shift Control (While in AM or AM Sync) from
*150 to 155, the distortion completely goes away!!! I am not sure what
is going on here.

I hope this, and the posts above will give some additional information on
what I am experiencing, and hopefully an answer.

Thanks,

Rick

I noticed I could rotate the Af
gain (Counter Clockwise) and it would go back to less distortion. I did
check the external speaker jack and also unplugged it only to find the
 same problem.

The AF knob feels like it was one of those old potentiometers that we
are all aware of (Get scratchy after use and loose). From my
understanding Elecraft used extremely fine pots with a very long life
(They do have a bad wobble/looseness in them though).

Upon further investigation I found that if I rotated the RF gain control
from the fully clockwise position (all the way open) to the full counter
clockwise position (all the way closed) that when you almost get to the
end of travel the radio audio goes completely dead. I have tried this
multiples times and it is very repeatable.

After more investigation I found that if I rotated the shift (While in
AM or Sync AM) control from its standard (Normal) value of 1.50 to 1.55
this horrible distortion would disappear? I am really confused as to what
 is going on here.

This happens while in the Normal AM mode as well as the Sync AM mode.

I have tried to explain this in away that I hope most people will
understand my problem (I am not an EE).

Could others please let me know if it is my unit or a wider problem?

I am using 3.59 and the serial number is 283?. This unit was fully loaded
 and built by Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Distorted Sound while using AM

2009-12-06 Thread pd0psb

Thanks Richard,

To me that's an indication the DAC stages are indeed maxing out on LF (near
DC) content.
Either reducing the low EQ or shifting the passband up alleviates this.

Some sort of DC blocking between DSP and DAC could help.
(also for the PB shift clicking effects)
